I loved the vibe in this restaurant. It was a dark atmosphere, brick walls, and beautiful artwork. There was a bar area as well as normal seating. I came here with my family and they loved the Buffalo Brussel sprouts with whipped blue cheese and the fish tacos. We also got the octopus appetizer which was really good but a very small portion. This place is clearly very popular because there was a queue outside the restaurant before it opened for 5:30 p.m. dinner service on a very rainy Saturday night. Once open, the restaurant quickly filled up with diners. Tables tend to be closer together because of how busy it gets, and there are a lot of hard surfaces, meaning things can get a little loud. Service was the right level of attentive: staff were very friendly and they were good about clearing plates and utensils when it's clear diners are done eating. The daily fish specials are posted on a chalkboard inside. Overall, the food was very good. The buffalo brussel sprouts with whipped blue cheese were very good but for $18? Feels steep. My husband enjoyed his tuna, which was served like an elevated poke bowl and had Asian influences. It feels like a combination of American food mixed in some seafood because why not, they are after all in MV, but have to add on something exotic like an elote. For my main menu, I just got a tuna tartare on top of crispy rice with ponzu sauce. Kind of disappointing...the crispy rice was not crispy at all. It was more like seared rice. This was an appetizer that I turned into a main course because nothing on the menu really screamed out to me "try me!!!" Oh I forgot, we ordered the focaccia bread...it looked like crostini bread. I was expecting something else. It was blah, nothing exciting about it. My fiancé ordered the burger and it looked decent. It sure filled him up. First off, we were just so glad to find some place that was open on a weeknight in the offseason. So thank you right off the bat for being open! The beer menu was kinda small and just a couple pale ales so I skipped drinks but my wife had a cocktail that was fairly decent. Some of the apps looked good but we were hungry so went right for entrees. I had the chicken sandwich. This seemed simple but was actually incredible. I'm so glad it was grilled and not fried. The harissa was there but i would've actually wanted even more of it. I was so appreciative of how little fat was actually on the bacon, it was a great cut and full of flavor. The aioli was also an interesting - feel like everyone does pesto or a spicy aioli but the chive aioli was really cool. I would 100% get this again. My wife got the fish tacos which were good too but not as distinctive as other options. So, I didn't mean to go eat at the Port Hunter. I ended up there, hungry, and it was late, so there weren't a lot of options. Truth: I was totally bowled over by the prices, so I ordered gently, and HOLY BATS THE FOOD WAS SO GOOD!! Yeah, I'm still kind of floored by the concept of a $51 pork chop, and I can't really afford to go eat there again any time soon, but I would if I could cuz it was mind bendingly delicious. Dinner tonight at the Port Hunter was split. The burger and fish tacos were 10/10, tasted amazing. The chicken and chicken sandwich were just alright. Although we made a reservation well in advance since they fill up a few days before, we weren't aware the menu was going to be so limited that they didn't have any steaks and mainly just sandwiches and a few seafood dishes. This would have been nice to know beforehand. We also would've really liked to sit outside because it was so loud inside. Unfortunately the service was terrible. The waitress came so few times it was hard to order food and drinks and she didn't come back until after we had eaten our food even though they forgot several items. We were pretty much stuck with what we got. The desert options weren't great either. The whoopie pie was dry but the cream part was good. I don't toss out 5 stars for just anything. When I mean you must friking go here, you MUST go here. This is quit literally one of the best bars I have EVER gone to. The band? National reserve. How good? 10/10. Every single musician had their own talent that showed through. I have never been to a bar that was so balanced. They made sure there was a perfect amount of people in the bar. If you wanted to dance and be right in front of the band, you could do it. If you wanted to stop dancing, walk 5 feet and you could easily have a conversation. Too loud? Walk 5 more feet. Now your on the outskirts yet some how still included with the fun. Service? 9/10. Never had to wait too long for a drink. A little pricey, but it's fucking Martha's Vineyard dude. WAKE UP. Though I'm not in Martha's Vineyard as much as I used to be, I've probably walked by the Port Hunter dozens of times. Its prime location and constant crowds make it pretty impossible to miss. So when we popped in at around 7:30pm on this past 4th of July, we jumped at the opportunity to be seated immediately. The devotion to local seafood (and local ingredients in general) and all-around good vibes make it hard to pass up. Our experience here was solid and I'd highly recommend visiting if you're looking for tasty eats in a more relaxed setting. The Port Hunter is a nice, hybrid venue. It definitely feels more like a bar than a restaurant, but the food is still the main event here. Important note: they DO NOT take reservations, so plan your trip accordingly. Edgartown is an incredibly busy place during vacation season and a number of restaurants don't take reservations around here, so always have a back-up plan/something in mind for killing time. Though we happened to be seated right away, that's not the norm. We actually got extra lucky, because our table happened to be right next to the raw bar. If we were having any doubts about ordering oysters to start off the meal, seeing all of those beautiful specimens showcased in front of us made it an obvious choice. There were three types of oysters (as well as one type of clam) available on Tuesday, so we got two of each. I can't remember the names or which was which or anything really that helpful, but they were all solid. Two were great, one was just decent. All local, obviously. They also have a nightly raw bar special, which is another option if you're not into clams/oysters. On this particular night, there was a tuna tartare special. Backtracking a bit, they've got a nice selection of drinks at Port Hunter. A nice list of cocktails (nothing fancy, a lot of classics), a lot of good wines by the glass, and a decent variety of beer. I had the Cucumber Cleanse for my cocktail of the night, which is a silly name considering any alcoholic beverage is the literal opposite of a cleanse. That said, it was yummy. I also tried two different rosés, both of which were great. I recommend going with something light here if you're going to stay seafood-focused. Post-oysters, we dove into some seafood and veggies. The food menu is pretty varied, with an emphasis on local/seasonal proteins and veggies. A lot of healthy options, which is important in my book. As per usual, we decided to share everything. Our eats, below: Super Six: kale, broccoli, red cabbage, brussels sprouts, dried cranberry, pumpkin seeds, lemon poppy seed dressing: A Probably the healthiest thing you could order on the menu. All of the yummy superfoods. Light and fresh, the ideal starter in my opinion. Buffalo Brussels: flash fried brussels sprouts, buffalo sauce, scallions, garlic & blue cheese mousse: B The dud for me. Not bad, but the buffalo sauce totally overpowered the brussels and made them a bit soggy. The reason to fry brussels is to give them that mouthwatering crisp, and that wasn't really present here. Adding a thick mousse on top of that didn't remedy anything, either. It's not that the flavors were bad, this was just overdone. I've been seeing a lot of "healthy wings alternatives" out there, and these might've well just been chicken wings. Chatham Mussels: red & green curry, toasted coconut, scallions, fennel, garlic, P.H. focaccia: A The bf thought the curry was a bit much, but I loved this preparation. While it's true that I tend to like my mussels simple--particularly when I come to the Vineyard--I knew what we were getting when we ordered curry. Seriously tasty flavors, rich but not overpowering (for me), and plenty of broth left over to soak up with the focaccia provided. Market Fish: Yellowfin tuna w/ coconut jasmine rice, sweet ginger soy sauce: A-/A I can't remember everything in this preparation, but they did a great job with the Catch of the Day. The tuna had an Asian fusion vibe, which I suppose was a bit discordant at an eatery like this but they still pulled it off well. The tuna was served rare and was wonderfully fresh. The coconut jasmine rice was fantastic, too, and this is coming from someone who typically doesn't love rice. I'm currently sugar-free, meaning that dining out tends to be a big hassle for me. So I appreciated that Port Hunter served sauces on the side when applicable and was ready and willing to do so. Obviously all of these dishes are better when the sauce isn't tampered with, but all things considered, I was satisfied and grateful. read more

Our first attempt to get a table here was a bust, as there was 8 of us on a Saturday night and the wait was 2 hours. However, we tried again on Sunday, though with only 6 people, and had about an hour wait, which we agreed to. And this was a weekend in September after Labor Day, but it was summer weather. While we waited for a table, we stood in the back area by the shuffle board and watched the football game and had some drinks. Their full bar offers cocktails, martinis, and craft brews. The place itself is nicely decorated and had a truly great music station/playlist going at a good volume. Once seated, our waitress Ashleigh was over promptly and we ordered appetizers. We opted for the shiitake mushroom steamed buns, the lobster rangoons, and the elote (street corn). These were out within 15-20 minutes and were all delicious. The sauce in the shiitake mushroom buns was spot on, could really taste an asian influence; and the buns were steamed well, not overdone and chewy. The lobster rangoons were very tasty, golden crisp on the outside with a creamy filling. I didn't detects chucks of lobster meat, but you did get the buttery taste of it. The elote was flavorful but not dense and heavy; would have liked it a little warmer. For dinner, most of the table opted for either the burger or chicken sandwich. After hearing the specials, I chose for a local fish, the tautog, which was pan seared with broccoli rabe and couscous. I had never heard of the fish, but our Ashleigh described the fish as a meaty white fish, which was spot on. I enjoyed every bite. Additionally, I tried a bite of a burger at the table, because a couple people claimed it was "the best burger they ever ate". I'll admit, it was up there - juicy and flavorful. And the fries, soooo good! Overall, a great dining experience from the service to the food to the music. Would definitely recommend, even with the waits of up to one hour or more (they take your phone number and text you, so you can wander around town). read more

Port Hunter had a line out the door at 5:30 PM on a Tuesday night. Outside and inside dining are available. We did not have a reservation but were able to be seated without any issues. Great atmosphere and excellent service. Child friendly too as we saw some families being serviced. My husband had the Honey Suckle Oysters as an appetizer and Special which was Tile Fish with a risotto and watercress on the side. I had the half-roasted chicken which was very filling and delicious. The mussels to me were a bit bland in the coconut sauce I wanted more flavor but my hand and liked them. The Brussels sprouts in hot sauce were hot if you love blue cheese it was delicious mixed with the sprout and helped calm the heat. We were visiting Martha's Vineyard from Arizona and at the suggestion of a friend, planning on having dinner at the Port Hunter in Edgartown. This restaurant does not take reservations. We arrived in Edgartown around 6:30pm on Sunday of Labor Day weekend. We were going to put our name on the wait list (we were a party of 7) and then shop in the area until they called us. No dice...the hostess told me they were so busy they were not taking any more names on the wait list. I spent the next half hour standing on the sidewalk calling every restaurant in Edgartown trying to find someplace to eat. Apparently, my uncle went back into the restaurant at some point and they did take his request to be put on the wait list. When we couldn't find anything in Edgartown, we headed back to Vineyard Haven to eat. About halfway back to VH, we got a call from the Port Hunter asking if we still wanted our table because it was ready. At this point we had already found another restaurant and were on our way there. So fellow Yelpers...here is a suggestion. If you want to try the Port Hunter on a busy weekend, have a backup reservation unless you are OK with a long wait. To the restaurant, we are seasoned diners at high end restaurants...this is not our first rodeo. I'd suggest the restaurant get a better handle on the wait list process if they are not going to take reservations. When what we were told would be a 90 minute wait turns into around 30 minutes, something needs to be adjusted. read more
