On this episode of eating my way through Martha's Vineyard, we stopped at Square Rigger, one of the island's well-known staples. All I wanted that day was some fried shrimp and clam strips -- and for me, the strips are key because they skip the extra parts you get with whole clams. Unfortunately, they were out of clam strips, so we went with fried shrimp, fries, and lobster bisque. Since I had to share with my wife, I asked for extra shrimp -- but heads up, it's $3 per shrimp. Not complaining, just letting you know. The lobster bisque came out hot and creamy, but I was hoping for a bit more depth of flavor and a little more lobster meat and a little less bisque. The shrimp were tasty and fried well, but personally, I prefer mine butterflied for that extra texture and presentation. What stood out most, though, was the service. Friendly, quick, and attentive, which matters a lot when you're trying a local favorite. Overall, Square Rigger delivers a solid experience, but I left wishing for just a little more -- especially when you're at a place with that kind of reputation. Verdict: Good shrimp, great service, but I'll be back hoping for those clam strips next time. read more

My family and I live in Arizona. When we called to make a reservation. We called at 5pm(AZ)/8pm(EST) on Friday several weeks before our visit. A member of the family had requested this location for her birthday dinner. The person who answered the phone "Idk. It's Friday night. I don't have time for this. It's busy." This should have been our first red flag. A separate conversation and call at another time, the GM asked over the phone if we'd like a cake or something special brought in. Very thoughtful. "Yeah we'd love that! Thank you!" When we arrived at our reservation time, the table had to be rearranged while the party waited. Our party was 8 people. When we inquired about the cake, no one present had any idea what we were talking about. They kindly offered to put a sampler dish together which we accepted but all other food and drink took so long, we cancelled it because we just wanted ultimately just wanted to leave. This is a steak house. A few people at the table ordered steaks with a medium center. Plates were brought out and we were advised the steaks had a medium. Every single steak was completely grey inside(well done). There was not a spot of pink inside. We didn't ask for a replacement steak, we just let them know so they would be aware for future steaks and someone else's future steak! We didn't bother asking for the replacement steak because it already took incredibly long for us to get our food and we were hungry. The waitress never apologized. She didn't look like she wanted to be there and was awkwardly hovering between the 2 tables they had filled. Two new steaks were brought out which we thought was nice but it was also suspiciously fast considering our previous long wait. We cut into the new steaks, almost completely raw. There was a man that poured water for us when we sat. He was the only one that looked like he enjoyed working there and showed any real customer service. The menu says 8oz sirloin and instead you get a 10oz New York strip. A larger piece sounds good but it's not what we asked for when we were ordering our food. If you're going to serve a different cut and size, why would you not change your menu? Or at least let customers know when ordering. Drinks were HEAVY. Can't complain about the quality of liquor. The drinks would be put on the table and take almost 10 minutes to get the next drink. The bartender was kind a remixed one of our drinks when we asked to sweeten it. Just wish drinks came out faster. The other food was great! We had pastas, salmon, vegetables, and mashed potatoes. They were very tasty. If the service, and steaks were better, this place would be recommended as it had beautiful flavor. The steak would have been perfect too if they knew how to cook it! read more

Bottom Line: Seafood and American fare served in what feels like an upscale sea shanty. My husband and I enjoyed our last night in MV at Square-Rigger and we had a great experience. Visiting in the shoulder season the restaurant was quiet. We enjoyed the decor that had a sophisticated sea shanty feel and the food was even more sophisticated. We skipped appetizers, although there were plenty of tempting options, and went right for main courses consisting of a filet mignon and seafood pasta. Service was great and we appreciated that this restaurant was not in the thick of the high traffic touristy areas. read more

For years I went to the ToGo window not knowing there was a sit down restaurant on the other side! The ToGo window is amazing but inside it's "Amazing Grace!" We stopped here as my wife remembered the food being really good from a visit last year. Now wondering if the ownership has changed. According to my wife, there were far fewer seafood choices on the menu. Lots of Brazilian choices, however. My son had a hot dog and fries. My wife had the salmon and I chose the seafood scampi. The salmon was simple and cooked fine, nothing to write home about. The scampi had "local" seafood (littlenecks, mussels) plus shrimp and calamari. The sauce was buttery but could have use more garlic. Overall, okay food and fair service. read more

We simply got takeout, so there were no servers, or an ambiance really. Besides this, we ended up with delicious food! The lobster bisque was extremely rich and creamy. I could feel it boiling in my stomach and sizzling on my taste buds. Though, The clam chowder was good, but average in my opinion. We also ordered some fish tacos which were so wonderful. The fish was soft inside, had a nice outer crisp/crunch, and wasn't overly oily like most fired fish. The slaw and diced were a fresh nice touch. Additionally, the avocado was creamy and a nice temp. We've stopped here for a Lobster Roll lunch at the outside window but never made it inside. Came for dinner and it was very cute. Maybe 10-12 tables, small bar, open kitchen with the grill up front. Quick service for seating and drinks, yummy bread with oil to start. We had the Wagyu burger and the seared scallops with the Lobster Lollipop for a starter - and that was a great appetizer. Considering that it was pretty quiet - it took a while to get our food. I could not tell the difference between prime beef and Wagyu, so that was lost on me, good burger though. Not worth the effort. Hoping to rediscover an old favorite but will not be returning. Food was decent, however the service was inattentive, sporadic and seemed uninformed. Sometimes you just want very fresh food, simply prepared, friendly service and -- a rarity in Edgartown--easy parking. And did I mention, very generous and delicious cocktails? If so, the Square Rigger may fit the bill. At the waiter's suggestion, I had the crispy salmon, well prepared, nearly enough for two. My husband had the seafood scampi which was again very fresh and tasty. And my caipirinha was huge (at least a double) and excellent. Outstanding. 5 star all the way. Cute ambiance. The bar area and the restaurant section both have a bit of character. Even though it's was 9:45 and close to closing, we had Excellent service and the food was absolutely AMAZING! The scallops we delish and the lobster ravioli made my night! Last year I had food from the carry out and didn't even know the sit down portion was an option. This was by far on of my favorite meals on the island this week. A must try on the island!! Square-Rigger Restaurant's lobster roll to go or stay is not to be missed for a great casual dining. We each had the lobster roll, me cold with mayo and my wife had the warm lobster roll with butter. The lobster rolls were chock full of lobster. French fries and salad are ala cart. You get lobster roll. Good quick service as we were first when the take out window opened. Neither did the 45 minute wait to be seated past our scheduled dinner reservation. Another group walked in without reservations and delayed our seating because of Their slow departure. Great dinner with friendly attentive service. We have been coming here for years but with a change in ownership were apprehensive as to what we would find this year. The dining room has been updated and is bright and inviting. Staff was excellent and service was brisk but not pushy. Prime rib was delicious, perfectly cooked and clam chowder on par with island fare. Also ordered the seafood carbonara which was filled with delicious clams, shrimp, and other delights. Excellent traditional lobster roll. Finally! Someone who actually knows how to make a real lobster roll. Here's the breakdown, you butter the outside of a new england style bun. You grill it so it's golden brown and just slightly crunchy. You take nice fresh lobster meat (celery is optional) toss it cold with mayo and pile it high on that bun. The lobster is cold, the bun is warm, the food is fresh and light. That's the most perfect thing in the world and Square Rigger totally nails it! We had rolls all over the vineyard and Square Rigger was the best by far. Although I haven't tried everywhere, I'm ready to bet the they have the best roll on the island. read more

Phenomenal meal and service. The lobster bisque is light and not too creamy, with big chunks of delicious lobster in it. We split the lobster roll (hot) and the steak sandwich - both are phenomenal. The chimmichuri on the steak sandwich makes it a perfect lunch or dinner. read more

Pricey but excellent food. All three of us enjoyed our food. I think my wife had some form of bouillabase. The kid had a lobster dish with a creamy sherry sauce. We really loved this restaurant! The food is great as is the service. The decor is super homey and the staff is very warm and friendly. We had: Swordfish - totally delicious Grilled Lobster extra stuffed - very good!
