We were there as part of a party of six. It was a Saturday night and we had 6:30 reservations. Not all of the tables were filled and there was no one waiting.
The atmosphere and decor are very nice, but the place is very loud. It is hard to hear your dining friends, which I hate. I came there to enjoy a meal with friends and catch up, not to eat alone.
High ceilings and hard surfaces with nothing to retard the sound is a prescription for noise issues. Might want to consider weaving in some tapestries or actual fabric sound panels to help deaden the noise.
Our waitress was terrific although it would have been nice to have the table cleared without handing back a dish every time we saw her pass. That said, she had a great personality and knew the menu and wines.
Drinks, food, and appetizers were all served promptly which is a plus.
We ordered the calamari, brie, and smothered fries as appetizers. Personally, the fries are the way to go. I did not have any of the other two appetizers, but they seemed to disappear without complaint.
I have a juvenile palate and after 50+ years it is unlikely to change. (This means that grilled cheese and peanut butter and jelly are still foundational items. Toss in tomato soup and things are elevated to culinary nirvana in my mind.) Naturally the fries were going to be the best of the three. That said, they were the best of the three in presentation and the number of times I had to pass the plate to the others was a good indication that my friends felt the same way. Mark these delicious. I don't even know what's on them. Don't care. They're very good.
We also had an order of the corn chowder. I noticed it was all gone and there was no offer to share. Last I looked the bowl was tipped up and final molecules were draining into a waiting mouth. No, this was not one of the girls.
Entrees included the pepper steak for two of the guys, an arugula salad with grilled salmon salad for one of us, a roasted beet salad with salmon for another, soup and salad for yet another, and the square burger for me.
The burger was well prepared and generous. It really doesn't need the fried egg or the balsamic bacon jam. They really didn't bring anything to the party and there was plenty of flavor for you purists without the window dressing. The white cheddar was the real deal which I appreciated. Pretzel bun was fresh and tasty but added an awful lot of bread to the mix.
In the case of the soup and salad, the soup was French onion - a personal favorite. Nice presentation but could have stood a little more time in the salamander to brown up the provolone a bit. Unfortunately, the soup was extremely salty to the point where my wife could not eat it. Unlike my wife, I have a high salt tolerance. I tried the soup and had to agree. Surprisingly salty. Good base flavor, but super salty. This is a common danger with French onion soup so the chef should have been on alert.
The various salad and salmon combos were well prepared and flavorful.
The pepper steak got mixed reviews. It rests in a Hoisin sauce which is kind of a catch all for Asian barbecue sauce with all of the varieties that we see in western barbecue sauces. It had a little heat and maybe a little soy reduction. I tried the sauce and thought it was tasty. One of our crew finished his meal and was mopping up the plate with some leftover bread. (Might have been the guy with the corn chowder.) The other got about half way through and said the sauce was too thick and spicy. I probably would have agreed with the latter. Tasty but not in quantity.
We topped off our meal with a German chocolate torte with chocolate Gelato on top and a slice of Nutella and fudge cheesecake. If you are only going with one, grab the cheesecake. I couldn't taste Nutella or fudge but it was delicious. The German chocolate was good too, but the cheesecake, well, took the cake. Whatever that means.
On the way home, my wife said she would go back. She liked that it was not a chain and liked the atmosphere. Guess that means I am going back too!
Going with a middle of the road 3 here. The menu is a bit limiting. I am not a fish person and generally do not order a salad when I dine out. This left me with very few options. Even just adding a "have it your way" burger selection so I did not have to feel like a chump asking to leave off the trendy items would have been a plus for me. (I know, juvenile and oddly reminiscent of Burger King.) read more
