I took my bike to get tuned up at a local shop (in SF) and they notice some damage to the underside of the right chainstay on my BMC. I searched out places to get repair and after checking with this shop and another one I decided on Spyder. I had to have my disc wheel valve hole area opened up a little bit so I can fit the presta valve adapter in. The valve stem adapter was a tight fit and I was not able to put air in my new tire on my track disc wheel. I took it to spyder and Frank opened it up and it looks perfect, like it came out of the factory with a wider hole. Had some unlucky major frame damage after a stick penetrated my carbon fiber canyon mtb. Everyone told me it was toast, that a repair wasn't really feasible here, and to just swallow my pride and dish out the major cash to buy a new frame. Given that I had only ridden this bike for a few months I was super bummed. But then a friend told me to check out Spyder composites and see what they recommend. I'll let the photos speak for themselves. They patched it up nicely and got as close as they could to the original paint color (barely noticeable difference but it doesn't bother me at all) and now I'm back on the trail! Frank Moir is not fooling around! I had a crack below seat tube collar, another in a seat stay, plus 2 divots in both seat seat stays at the brake calliper. He cleaned them, filled them with more carbon, repainted to be invisible, like new. The turn around time was excellent. Dropped on a Thursday, picked up the following Wednesday. I decided to take my bike to Spyder Composites after reading multiple great reviews on Yelp, Reddit, Google, and Roadbikereview. A friend of mine also used them and recommended Spyder for carbon fiber and paint repair. Salar was the one who I was in contact with the entire time and he was very communicative and responsive. He responded quickly to my texts which I truly appreciated. I dropped my bike off on March 1 and by March 13, I received a text from Salar that it was done and ready for pick up. I decided to drop my bike off myself (3 hr drive each way) instead of shipping it as I did not trust shipping. My bike looks amazing as if it was nearly new again. Also their pricing is fair and was almost half of all the other quotes I received from 3 other shops who do carbon fiber repairs. I did not have to stipe my bike down to the frame and was able to deliver as is. The only thing I decided to remove was my bottle cages to give them room to paint. Salar informed me that their work was lifetime guaranteed. I'm glad that I did not go with the local bike shop's suggestion of replacing my frame as I would have paid 3-4 times more. What can I say besides Frank knocked it out of the park! I recently picked up an older bike that came with a carbon fork that was not in the best shape. The clear top coat had been chipped and discolored plus it had some decals on it which looked a little tacky to me. After attempting to search for shops that could work on carbon fiber, none seemed to be as confident and skilled to do the work I needed. Never had a chance to review... Called in to see if my carbon rim could be repaired. They told me I would have to bring it in for an assessment. At first chance I drove down to the area to drop off. After about a week and not heating back I called in to see the status. They said it would be repairable and it would take 2-3 weeks. Told me it would be about $100-$200. I agreed and left it at that. 3 weeks later I call in to check if I can come in to pick up and they tell me it's not ready and they would need another week. This literally happened several times until close to 3 months. Probably got tired of me calling and finally worked on it. When I came in to pick up i presented a voucher to pay for a part of it and the gentleman looked confused like he didn't know what it was. He eventually took it but I ended up paying $150 still. Had a feeling he increased the price because I had that voucher. I didn't really check the rim when I first picked up aside from a quick glance and it looked repaired. I looked at the valve hole n it looked really small. I asked if it would fit a tube valve . He said it would but I was skeptical. Luckily I had a tube in my car. I took the tube out to test and ofc it didn't fit. I asked him to fix and he did on the spot. Imagine if I didn't notice this. I would have had to drive all the way back. When I got home though I noticed that there were particles inside the rim. When I would shake the rim I would hear it. Headed up spending a good 2 hours fishing out the particles. The rim works fine so the repair was good however the entire process and customer service was pretty crappy. Can't really do much though because they're the only ones that repair carbon in the area. read more

What a great experience. Frank and Solar are real pros and I wholeheartedly recommend Spyder Composites if you need a frame repaired. They are affordable, quick and do an awesome job. See pics to see how good they are. Read below for the full story. My son damaged his frame right in the middle of racing season in a Wednesday. The bike shop where he works recommended Calfee, saying that they are the best. I contacted them by submitting a request for a quote on their site that Sunday. On Monday I called them to see if I can get a response, I left a message. Monday morning, a friend recommended that I check out Spyder design. He had his road frame that split in half repaired by them and endorsed them. I checked out their website and called for a quote. Frank answered and after I described the damage, he quoted $200, including paint. Frank also agreed to meet me the following Sunday so that I can drop off the bike. When I arrived, both Frank and Solar where there and greeted me with enthusiasm. They did a quick check and confirmed $200. They did add $40 for removing, reassembling and bleeding the brake line, but that was totally worthy extra so that I did not need to disassemble the frame myself. Back to Calfee. They finally responded to my emailed me back on Monday (after more than a week) and quoted a much higher price than Spyder but, they wanted me to ship the frame only to them and suggested that it will take 3-4 weeks once they receive the frame. Back to Spyder During the week, I texted back and forth with them and they confirmed that the bike will be ready for pickup on Friday. That is less than a week after dropping it off!!! I am not sure that the turnaround is always this quick, but timing could not have been better. My Son will be back on his own ride for next weekend's #norcalmtb State Finals race in Petaluma. Way to go Spyder Composites, I hope that I will never need your help again, but if I do, I look forward to seeing you again. read more

Sent these folks my rear Mavic Comete disk wheel for repair after they viewed multiple photos of the damage and assured me they could fix it. Sent the wheel to them in July 2019 after I was told it was a 2 or 3 week repair in an email response to the photos. Coming up on four years later (July 2023) I still don't have the wheel back and don't expect to ever receive it. I have texted, called and emailed Frank (owner) and he always tells me its finished and he'll send me shipping tracking information later that day but I never get the information. Sometimes when I call they cant locate the wheel, sometimes confuse me with another customer but eventually they get it correct and tell me the same story over and over again. Once someone else besides Frank answered the call and he went to locate the wheel while I was on hold. He came back on the phone and he was like "uh I'll have to have Frank give you a call". I started to research Frank/Spyder Composites (beyond just google reviews) and there were multiple reviews of his inability to finish jobs and the hostile treatment towards his customers when they pushed him to get the job done. Did Frank make repair promises he couldn't meet? Did he damage my wheel during the repair and can't fess up? Did he lose the wheel? Who knows but I can't imagine what could explain almost four years of him saying the repair is all done and it looks great and he'll be shipping later that day? FYI I've never treated him with anything other than respect and patience in our multiple communications over the years but I think "the writing is on the wall". read more

I am an avid road cyclist and aspiring home mechanic. That being said, I still have a lot to learn regarding the nuances and limitations of carbon fiber. Over the years, like most cyclists, I have heard and read anecdotal horror stories about how fragile carbon fiber is, how it's prone to sudden and catastrophic failure, etc, etc, etc. Of course, the validity of such stories is always fodder for scrutiny. However, needless to say, when a small stone flew up from the road during a ride and struck my carbon frame, leaving a small impact fracture, I was pretty concerned. I contacted Frank and texted him some photos. By looking at the photos he didn't seem to believe it was anything to worry about. Naturally, I had to keep poking at the fracture out of equal parts curiosity and paranoia. I tapped away using the good old "quarter test" and found an area beside the fracture that didn't sound right to me and my untrained ears. So I contacted Frank again. Frank said he'd have to X-ray the frame to know what was going on. I took the frame to him and he quoted me a price and a date that it would be done. A couple of days went by and I contacted Frank hoping perhaps he would have had time to run the X-ray, but knowing full well he'd probably be too busy to have gotten to my frame so soon. As it turned out he had actually X-rayed my frame earlier that morning. Long story short, he explained that it wasn't a crack or a structural issue and there was really no need to repair the small (very minute, like the size of a grain of rice) fracture since it was more of a cosmetic issue. I picked up the frame that day and he charged me way less than the price quoted since he didn't have to disassemble the bike for the X-ray. However, the real point here is, Frank is a nice honest business person. He could have told me what I was expecting (fearing) to hear: "You really need to fix that pronto before it falls apart!" And taken my money. But he didn't. I also want to mention that Frank's communication is great. He's a busy guy without a secretary to answer his phone, but he responded to each of my text messages in a very reasonable amount of time. My bike was gone about 20 days longer than expected with no word from the shop even when I called and asked (on 3 seperate occasions). Only 1 out of 3 of the repairs were made The paint job was rough, hazed, and the lines weren't straight When I confronted them about the shoddy work I was told that 'Based on the overall condition of your bike I really didn't think you were going to care that much about the overall finish' the logic behind that escapes me. My wife's bike had carbon damage that needed to be repaired. We requested a full tear down and repaint. That part went very well. However, there was a problem with the Fox fork and it needed to get sent to Fox for repair. Frank said he would take care of it. After about two months of waiting, like all of July and August, I asked Frank what was going on. He blamed Fox but Fox confirmed that their turn around time was a couple of weeks. After digging a bit it turns out that Frank forgot about this. Fox was waiting to hear back on a question they had, fix the problem or complete rebuild, and Frank didn't get back to me about this for almost two months, and only after I pushed on him. So then we had to wait another two weeks. He did make a price adjustment but we lost most of the summer's riding and an event we wanted to go to. During this time I had them tear down and strip the paint from my carbon bike to check the carbon. No carbon problems so he was to repaint it the same has my wife's bike, a warm orange - yellow. He didn't get the match right but my yellow bike looks great. However, the main reason for getting the bike repainted is because for years I really wanted that warm orange - yellow. So disappointing. It is now 8 months after the paint jobs and the paint is holding up fine. The only issue is that we picked up the bikes and immediately left on a road trip. The paint should have had more time to dry so it chipped a little at the beginning of that trip. No chips since then and multiple 4,000 mile MTB road trips. read more

I really want to thank Frank for saving me about $1000 and a lot of headache. I New Year's Eve I ran through a road close sign and wedged my carbon fiber wheel into a steel grate. Only did then I found out that each carbon fiber we all cost almost $1000 to replace and that this model has been discontinued. Sleepless in San Jose went to bicycle sports basement and was referred to Spyder composites. Wow I don't he was frank working on New Year's Day but he charged $180 to fix my otherwise totally destroyed carbon fiber dream. I've been holding off on reviewing Spyder Composites until I actually received my frame back from them, but after reading the other review, I think I need to throw my hat in the ring and make sure consumers know that this was not an isolated incident. First, I emailed Spyder Composites, both through the in-browser messaging system on their website and with my personal account. This would have been mid August, 2012. After several days with no response, I decided to give them a call. Phone was answered with "Spyder Composites." I let them know that I wanted to get a bike repaired, explained the damage to the frame, and was looking for any information they could give me. I got a response "Yeah, it'll be $180. Just print out one of the forms on our website and ship it with the frame." I was a little surprised by the casualness of the instructions, but went ahead with it. Frame stripped, boxed up, and sent out. I sent some simple instructions on the form they asked to have included, including a request to be contacted if they had a new estimate or ETA for me. FedEx tracking shows it arriving at Spyder Composites on August 21st. A week later, I'd heard nothing. I emailed on the 29th, asking if they'd even received my bike, let alone started work, and got no response. I called them on Aug 31st and was told that the bike was there (phew) and they'd sanded the affected area. Hmm. To make a long story short, it's now October 24th, and I don't have the frame back. I've called 3 or 4 times since the beginning of September, always to hear that they'd made marginal progress but needed to add a layer of carbon or paint or clear coat, etc. On Sept 28th, after calling and getting a response of "having it done this weekend," I received an invoice from Spyder in my personal email. I paid it promptly, and on Sept 30th I got a "Payment Received" email from Spyder. That's the last contact I've had with Spyder. More than three weeks later I've got no shipping confirmation or tracking number, and no phone call saying "Sorry, but we had to postpone for X reason." For all I know, Spyder is the greatest carbon frame repair company on the planet. For all I know, they've taught my frame to speak Flemish in these last two months. But I know without a doubt if they don't address their shortcomings when it comes to basic customer service, my bike could pedal itself when I receive it and I would still be hugely dissatisfied with this experience. read more

I crashed my bike in the hills above Palo Alto about 3 months ago, and cracked the top tube. I. Missed. My. Bike. Actually, the crack in my bike hurt more than the cuts and bruises on my body. I didn't want to pay a grand to take the bike to my bike shop, have it disassembled, and sent to Calfee, and wait for weeks, so I found Frank here on Yelp. Our first meeting was suspect. He was an hour late to meet me to pick up my bike. But you know what? He met me. He went out of his way to come down off the mountain and meet me in town, instead of making me drive all the way up to where his shop is at. So, I was a little annoyed at him for being late - but hard to hold it against him. He promised me that my bike would be fixed within 5-days. And he held true to his word. I paid way less than Calfee. I got it back faster. And best of all, It is a gorgeous fix. It looks like new, with pinstripes and all. As I type, I'm sitting here in my ridiculous biking outfit, getting ready to ride my baby again for the first time in months. Brought my frame in for inspection of damage. Frank personally inspects the frame and provides quote that was lower than I expected. I gave him the green light to proceed with repair. He texts me in less than a week that the repair and repaint was completed. The final invoice was lower than the quoted price! Obviously he could've just charged the quoted price and make extra few bucks but he didn't. Also when I went to pick up the frame I asked Frank about a few other paint nicks and dings and how to fix them. Instead Frank fixed them on the spot at no charge. Overall did a great job. Went out of way to exceed customer's expectations. Also a great guy to chat about bikes and cycling. Definitely would use again if carbon repair is required. read more
