My bike needed some adjustment to the air stem and tightening. As i walked in an older gentleman helped me out. He was super nice and professional. He took my bike back and quickly fixed the air stem and pumped up my tires with full air. When i asked how much i had to pay, he said " dont worry about it. " It was so nice of him that i went ahead and bought couple items. When i looked around at the bikes, it seamed like they only sell high end quality bikes. I was reacting emotionally to my only source of income being under attack by DOGE at the beginning of the most expensive month of my life, and the huge cultural disconnect that so chronically undervalues work with children. This is a good bike shop. To be fair, it isn't the shop for everyone. A good, possibly Greek, analogy might be, "Bike shops are like a many handled hammer. Not every handle's swing, is equally balanced." If you have worked on cars or bikes before, the same may be true in your own work experience. That being said, it may not be perfect strait away. Although, their service staff is truly passionate about the job that they do. Making it right gives them great joy. I've been going there for a year. They did work on my 30 yr old bike, until I realized, a new bike would be cheaper and more entertaining than resurrecting a corps. I needed an upgrade. It is important to do some research of your own, the industry has changed a great deal. When you have a chance, take test rides when you're ready to buy. If you're looking for the RIGHT bicycle for you. Shop around and give yourself some time. I had not realize how different each brand or model of bike would ride. It has been 30 years since I bought a bicycle and the industry has changed dramatically. I bought a mid to high priced bike from them that they put together in the store. They are busy, so if you want something that isn't on the floor already, it will take a month. That is not an exaggeration. There were a few flaws in assembly, that happens. I know I would have made similar mistakes, had I assembled it myself. They have done well to fix those assembly issues and made it SPOT ON! They offer life time tuneups, for free, on bikes purchased from them. They keep good records and will apply your warranty to any parts that are covered. When changing out normally worn parts, it will cost you for parts and labor. After I put 750 miles on my new bike I took it in for a tune up. I was surprised that keeping your new bike tuned up will keep it riding just like brand new, once again. TIP your service technician, like you tip your waiter! They do so much, truly hands on work, for you and me. I'm sure they remember ever customer's bike that comes in, I would. When you tip them they see you too. To get good customer service, do some research, and have a few ideas about what would make your riding experience ideal. They are at their best when they can put themselves on your riding saddle and understand what products they have that will best fulfill your expectations. read more

Had a few hours during the weekday and swung by to check out the Santa Cruz line up. I'm a shorter (5'0" when I'm wearing shoes) rider so difficult to find a full sus mtb. Patrick was extremely patient and helpful with helping me set up different bikes, seat posts, stem heights with no pressure. He encouraged me to test out the bike set up after each adjustment. Confirmed that a small was still too big for me. A bike purchase wasn't in the cards for me that day but I wouldn't hesitate to give them my business. Stand-up shop. read more

I went in looking for shoes for my cycling class. I didn't want to spend a large amount and they were very helpful in finding what I was looking for! I even found a pair of shoes on sale for a killer deal. I even bought cleats and they put them on my shoes for me for no charge! They also had no problem answering any silly questions I had like how to clip in and out and didn't make me feel silly for asking. Or how I will know if the cleat will need to be adjusted for my foot. I will definitely be returning they were so friendly and helpful! Overall very great experience here! read more

My fiancé and I went to the Capitola location and although it seemed a little small, Mikey helped us so much! We were looking at a Momentum Vida Low and they only had one size in a large and he was so helpful in calling the Soquel location in checking their inventory. Luckily they did have it there in a size small and in the color I wanted and also the bike my fiancé wanted. The bike I wanted was in a box but they let me try the size small in the electric version of the bike. They were able to build mine before the store closed at 6pm; we bought the bikes around 4:30pm and also switch my fiancé's brakes as well. I feel bad because I don't remember the name of the guy that helped us, but he has "bicycle" tattooed on his arm. I also like that they had an area outside the shop to ride the bike. Don't purchase anything from this company it was the absolute worst experience ever!! I bought my wife a $5500 Liv E bike and Mike miss quoted me on the price by $1000 and also said that they had the bike in stock which they didn't! I ordered the bike from Giant and had it shipped to them the bike was lost in transit and Mike the manager refused to call the shipper or Giant to locate the bike I had to call both the company and the shipper myself taking a couple hours to figure it out! Went to pick up the E bike and the service manager set up the bike and the suspension! The bike had about 10-15 loose bolts and the suspension was not set up correctly at all had almost no air pressure in the shock or the front fork the rebound was set all the way out and it was like a spring hopping off the ground! The service manager set the tire pressure to 55psi on both wheels it had no caps on the valve stem's and the locking screws were missing! The service manager scratched a huge scratch in the brand new seat post to show height adjustment! They had charged the battery to 100% which is terrible for the battery and it isn't suppose to be charge to more than 60% unless you about to ride it causing battery damage issues! My wife needed gear like helmet, padded shorts, gloves, pads and hydration pack which they had none of!! We went to the a shop called Another Bike Shop and found everything that she needed spending $950 dollars on gear! Bicycle Trip on Soquel avenue was the worst bicycle shop I've ever experienced in my 53 years and I wouldn't recommend that anyone buy a bicycle or anything for that manner! The staff was Super Rude and didn't know what they were doing at all! The service manager totally messed up everything he had touched assembling the bike and setting it up! We spent $300 having the Brand New E bike gone through and repaired at Another Bike shop and the bike hadn't even been ridden once! Stay away from this place completely! Going there and buying a new bicycle or having a bicycle serviced there will end up costing you $100's of dollars to get there mistakes fixed correctly at a different shop! i've been a customer of this shop for about 18 years. this review is for their service department. i had a brand new made to order steel frame that needed a chris king bottom bracket installed. the BB has a large cup size (threadfit 30) that requires a special tool....one that i didn't have at the time. they charged me $30 for the install. i built my bike up and got half way up Emma. i heard the creaking and grinding from the BB and also started to feel it through the pedals. it was focking horrible and cringe inducing. i stopped to examine and found that both of the BB cups were loose. now of course i felt the cups before i continued my build, but with not having the tool, i couldn't really test it. i trusted the bike trip to install the $200 bottom bracket to spec....with 40 Nm of torque. clearly that didn't happen. now i'm wondering if my brand new bottom bracket's bearings are now also toast. in the past, i've known all the service managers and wrenches and felt very confident in the level of skill and care provided to my bikes. that is no longer the case. i don't think i'll let anyone from there touch my bikes again unless Nate or old Phil come back. it's a shame too cause they are my closest bike shop. bu hao read more

Tough one this, just got home with a really nice Elektra Cruiser bought from this very place. Prices were fine and the initial service was extremely attentive. The reason I don't give it 5 stars are the following. 1. The bike was brand new and in a box, they built it and there were already a few scratches on it which was a shame. 2. I got the distinct feeling that the more you spend the better the service, perhaps this was incorrect but it was an overriding sense I got. 3. Most common response to a question was 'we're out of stock of those. So nothing really bad but there are purchases hat leave you elevated and purchase that leave you empty and this unfortunately became the later. read more

The Bike Trip is my local shop. I bought my first real mountain bike from them years and years ago and more recently bought my first full suspension bike from them about 4 years ago. They are consistently friendly, professional, and knowlegable. The service department is consistently good, though a bit pricey. I've used them for a few tuneups over the years. In that time, I had one tuneup that was subpar, working with Aaron (the manager), I got it dealt with to my liking. Most local bike shops are going to pricey compared to what you can find online. It helps to be a frequent customer or join local groups like Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz and get a discount. The new location for Bike Trip is great, the store is more open and they have a little "test track". I've dropped a fair amount of money here over the years and will continue to support my local bike shop. My only real complaints are their hours are sometime inconvenient for us working stiffs that leave early and get home late. So, if I need a tube or something, waiting until 10am or later on a Saturday can be inconvenient. read more

I screwed up and put on a rotor that didn't match the mount distance for the caliper. Far from home when I discovered it, I wasn't able to remount the caliper, because the bolts were too long. I went in here and asked if they had shorter bolts. They gave me a pair of take-offs on the house. Wanted to by a Giant bicycle as a gift. Bought the last one in San Jose, but we moved over the hill last year, and I wanted to support local business. Found that Bicycle Trip is a dealer, so went in to buy one. Mike was at the counter. Really nice guy, but this is where the experience peaked. He said they didn't have the model I wanted in stock, but that I could use his computer to order one directly from Giant and have it drop-shipped, and that way, I wouldn't have to wait for their next bulk shipment or pay an expedite fee. A little extra hassle, but no big deal, so I did it. Also bought a component to have swapped out prior to pickup. A couple of weeks later, received an email that the bike was ready. Went in two days after the notice. Waited for someone to ask if they could help, and after five minutes of standing there, interrupted the guy at the counter - didn't get his name, but he wasn't with a client - to tell him I was there to pick up my bike. He went in the back, and after another five minutes had passed, wheeled it out. I saw immediately that the component hadn't been swapped out, and pointed that out. He asked if I'd paid for it - I had - and after a bit of searching for paperwork, got it done. I took the bike out to the parking lot, and rode it around. It wouldn't shift onto the large chainwheel, so I took it back in. Turns out it hadn't gone through the pre-delivery regimen, so waited another ten minutes while they adjusted brakes and a couple of spokes. I then asked them about the reflectors, as none were installed - pretty sure this is a federal law - and the tech's reply was, "Well, most people don't want 'em." I guess I'm not "most people", so I had them installed. Lastly, asked about getting an owner's manual (yes, I know they're pretty useless, but it's the principle, you know?) and they fumbled through a couple of drawers 'til they found one. After I got the bike home, noticed that the cosmetic cover for the headset hadn't been installed. Our daughter has the same bike (2017 model), so I looked at the Giant website for pics of the 2019, and there it was; no changes. At this point, I was pretty much done with Bicycle Trip, so I didn't bother going back. I've bought a number of bicycles in my lifetime, from almost as many different dealers, and have been working on bikes for decades; I know my way around a spoke key or cone wrench. Maybe it wasn't a high-end enough model to get their attention, but if that's the case, they could've just told me it's a model they don't carry/service, and I would've moved on. This was my worst bicycle-purchasing experience ever. In hindsight, wish I'd gone back to Hyland's in San Jose. read more

I purchased a jacket on 6/11/2020 on sale. I returned on 6/16/2020 to exchange it for a larger size. You did not gave it but offered to order it. I was told it would not be on sale. That seemed okay but then I was told I would have to pay an additional 10.00 service fee on top of that. This amounted to an additional $38. I was told it would take a couple of weeks. I left a message on 7/13/2020 and then called on 7/14/2020 because I had not heard anything. When someone answered the phone I briefly told her why I was calling. She did not respond, she merely put the phone down on the counter. 5-10 minutes later someone asked if I had been helped. I explained the reason for my call. He said he had heard my message and he thought the owner was following up. He had me hold briefly and told me someone would call me the next day. It is now 7/27/2020 and I have still not heard from anyone and not received the jacket. Had I ordered this online it would have been cheaper and faster. I was trying to support small businesses, but I will not be back and have requested a refund. Thank you read more

Recommended by someone I trust, their service department is a little less expensive than two others I checked, and they just celebrated 50 years, so they must be doing something right. However, my experience this week was less than stellar. I took in my used cruiser (for which I paid about $80 2 years ago), & I was told by Ian that it needed much work. Okay, but the manner in which he delivered this news was very negative, emphasizing in a dire-sounding way how bad my bike was. It felt like a patient getting so-so health news from a doctor with zero bedside manner. When I went to pick the bike up after servicing, the brakes weren't right, so while he worked on it, I talked with Patrick, a very new employee who was the opposite--so friendly and positive. Things turned out to still not be right again after I tested it, but by this time Ian was busy. Patrick kindly stepped in to work on it. Eventually he told me that new brake pads were needed, and that would be $12, & he would install them if I wanted them. No mention of any other fees. After he did this, he told me there was a $10 labor fee. I was a little upset; he said, "Oh there's always a labor fee." So, he knew better and should have said. BUT, the worst part was when I went to pay, he said, "Oh, looks like actually that install costs $25." REALLY?! If I had known this, my spouse would have just replaced them himself. So incredibly not cool!!! All in all, $160 to tune up an $80 bike. read more

I couldn't adjust the rear wheel spokes on my mountain bike because the nipples were corroded, the head mechanic sold me the nipples (and casette tool), and was very generous with his time explaining how to replace the nipples and true the rim, vertically and horizontally. He has decades of experience and is my go to guy for bicycle advice. I've used the Bicycle Trip for parts and advice for over 10 years and couldn't be happier with them. Absolutely phenomenal service and people here! I came in with a bike that had been sitting in a garage for a couple of years that needed alot of work. They fixed it up beautifully and now I'm biking all-around Santa Cruz. Bobby went above and beyond in helping me mount an old bike lock in a place that wouldn't interfere in operation, as well as installing a new side mirror and bell. He made sure my bike was well cared for and all my questions were answered. Now they have a customer for life! I dont see myself driving much anymore when biking is this pleasurable. read more

Months of lies and having to chase an unresponsive service department. I brought my bike in for a warranty service last July. After 7 months of hounding these guys I finally went and picked up my bike today. I never once received a call from their shop during this time, I had to continually call and call and call to even get a status update. They said a replacement frame was being shipped (it never was) and that I could pick my bike up "Next week". Two weeks would go by and I'd call and get a "it'll be ready next week", another two weeks would go by, I'd get some story of how the bike company was hard to reach and was being non-responsive. Finally I called the manufacturer directly (using another bike shops rep line information), and found out that NO warranty case had ever been created on my bike. Supposedly at one point in this process they received a replacement frame (that too was cracked and had to be sent back) yet I'd think that to get a frame sent they'd have to have filed a repair claim. Nope. Nothing ever filed under my serial number. After literally seven months of dealing with this, I reached my limit and went in and picked up my bike and am back at square one. I won't ever do business with this company again and recommend that you don't either. read more

I've had two very different experiences here. When I went in with my wife, we had great (but slow to start) service. She ended up buying a really phat Felt cruiser and she loves it. When I've gone in alone, even when shopping for a new Mountain Bike, I had a really hard time getting help. Perhaps it was busy or perhaps it was close to close, I don't know. I just had the impression that they are a little too clean and a little too corporate for my likes. Those criticisms leveled, when someone DOES help me, they are always great. There's just some sort of 'standoff' when I start out looking for help. On the plus side, they carry Rocky Mountain products, a fine counter-point to local manufacturer Santa Cruz. Rented beach cruisers from bicycle trip last weekend. What a fun activity for out of towners to do. We strongly suggest biking out to Natural Bridges Park via the multi-use path along Cliff Dr. Great way to see the surfers braving the cliff breaks, otters playing in the kelp and families out for weekend fun. However I would suggest trying other bike stores first. The lady helping us was rude and impatient. She seemed bothered that we were there, took half an hour to roll four bikes out for us and when we asked for suggested routes to avoid main roads she gave an unhelpful, non-specific answer as if we were stupid: "every street has cars in it" in a tone of voice that suggested she wished we would finally go so she could go back to standing inside. read more

Not only did my birthday present come from here (a shiny pink cruiser with flowers on it, the BEST present ever!) but I also take my road bike here when it needs professional attention. You may need to be patient on a sunny weekend day because there's probably more people checking out bikes that there are employees. But they're always super friendly. The service guys are super nice and they really know their stuff. Fully stocked with accessories and if they don't have it they'll order it for you. I have a terrible sinking feeling this place is going to get a lot more of my money. read more

TBT has become my regular bike shop in Santa Cruz. Walking distance from my house, cool bikes, accessories, parts, and people to boot. Every time I've come here I've left satisfied. They tend to be on the pricey side so I don't buy too much here (-1/2 a star for markups), but every once in a while I'll splurge on a nice set of riding shorts, or lights, gloves, whatever. Their service technicians are really great, too. Today I came in with some give in my headset and handlebars and Chris, who was in the middle of working on another bike, stopped what he was doing to help me. He proceeded to spend 15 minutes troubleshooting the problem for me, and was able to fix it for the lowly cost of a carbon-fiber spacer, or $4. How rad is that? He also gave me some pointers about things to do when I take my bike to the Bike Church. Awesome. read more

We would have loved to try this place out but the owner refused to accept a Groupon that had expired a few days earlier. I bought the Groupon for my wife and she was unable to take her bicycle there for a while due to illness. When she called the Groupon had expired 10 days earlier and the owner was totally uninterested in helping her out with the bike service. I am riding down the pacific coast and so I only had a couple hours in Santa Cruz. I was in desperate need of new tires as I kept getting flats. One of the guys in the service shop was super helpful, recommended some sweet tires and was able to install for me on the spot. They were super busy but he still fit me in.
