I crashed a wilier Cento Uno frame of myn and sent it to Spyder Composites for repair. They got the frame on the 14th of feburary and I had it back in about a month. I did not send off requesting rush service so I would expect that this is the normal unless you tell them that you need the rush service. The repair they did is great and I can definately not tell any difference in the ride quality of my frame from before it was wrecked. They did the paint free of charge and matched the frame as much as possible, I just had a matte black mixed with carbon and they did the repair part in all matte black... good enough for me! They also do some great looking paint I see on their pages if your repair is that bad that it needs new paint. Or if the paint looked horrible in the first place. Just wanted to forward an experience I had with this bike repair company. I cracked a top tube in June and had no idea where to turn. Cannondale wouldn't warranty it due to a pedal malfunction and not a frame defect. Go figure. I had a few people tell me to lookup Spyder Composites and had others say Predator. Both were highly recommended and personally saw frames fixed from both places. Both were impeccable and you couldn't tell where the fix was. After getting quotes from both places I went with Spyder Composites because the quote was 80% less than Predator. So I gave Frank @ Spyder a shot considering I saw a few frames he had fixed that were flawless. They fully XRay the frame to look for other cracks as well. However, he also found the left side was damaged in addition to a couple other areas. Had I taken this frame to anyone else, I would probably be riding on these unseen dangers until failure. Very glad he took the time to do a full inspection. What I appreciate most of all is that Frank also has an eye for aesthetic details as well. When we were discussing the preservation of some of the decals, he recommended that I remove a lot of the white decals which were just too noisy to appreciate the beauty of the frame and the accents. The original look was like a rolling advertisement with white Raleigh decals everywhere. Frank recommended getting rid of all the white decals, and doing a fresh clear coat. So glad I agreed to the suggestion, because the bike looks waaaayyyy better now. Don't go near this place unless you want to wait forever for a repair and like to be insulted. Once they get your money, they stop answering emails. If you call, the owner is nasty and full of excuses and false promises. They told me my bike was fixed 2 weeks in order for me to pay them and 2 months later I do not have my bike. Where do I even start? In mid-July I cracked the chain stay on my S-Works SL4. I had heard good things about Spyder/Frank, so I decided to go with him. My experience was horrible. See below: 7/20: Send pictures to Frank asking for a quote and a time expectation. He quickly responds via text with the price, and that the wait would be 1-2 weeks. This was fantastic news, as I had been training very hard for a race in mid-September. It was looking like I'd have my bike back with plenty of time to spare. I shipped my bike to him the next day. 7/24: Using the tracking number, I knew my bike had arrived, but I had not heard from Frank. I texted to confirm that he received it, no response whatsoever. I then followed up with phone calls that were unanswered. 8/7: Sent another text to get an update on my bike, even to confirm that it was in his possession. No response. Now I was getting nervous. 8/18: After multiple attempts at calling, he finally answered, and confirmed that he received the bike, and that it would only be a few more days. It had now been close to 4 weeks. 8/21: Texted to confirm that it was ready to be shipped. He told me "I can ship it today, what is your address?". I immediately sent my shipping address. 8/27: Bike had still not arrived, nor had I received any shipping notification. I texted again to check on the status, and confirm the shipping address. No response. 5 weeks. 9/16: Texted again for an update, still no response. He was not answering phone calls. 10/5: After finally contacting via phone, I texted again to confirm our mutual understanding that the bike would be shipped that day. 11 Weeks. 10/19: Still no bike, still no shipping confirmation. Sent follow up text, no response. 13 Weeks. 10/21: Still no bike, still no shipping confirmation. Sent follow up text, and he says "I think the bike was returned to us..." No additional information. 10/22: Sent follow up text asking for shipping information. He sends me a photo of a shipping label with the shipping date as Oct 23, the next day. It appears that the label was created at that moment to temporarily resolve the situation. Who knows? He then says that the original shipment was returned to him because the box was damaged. My understanding was that the recipient would have to refuse the shipment due to damage. I could be wrong. 10/28: Bike finally arrives. 14 WEEKS. It goes without saying that the customer service and professionalism were some of the worst I've ever encountered. I was scared to ever push too hard or make any demands since he was in possession of my frame, and I felt like there was nothing I could do. Scattered throughout all texting was a myriad of phone calls that went unanswered, and were not returned. I had to withdraw from the race I had been training for. Regarding the repair to the bike, to his credit it looks like Frank did a fine job. My frame is matte black, which is notoriously difficult to match, so the repair is slightly visible in certain light, but all in all I'm very satisfied with the quality of the repair. Summary: Unless you live nearby, or have some other means of keeping close tabs on your bike repair, I would avoid Spyder at all costs. I never knew if I was actually going to get my bike back, and I felt like I had no alternatives once I realized how Spyder treats their customers. I got Spyder Composites name from an online forum, I contacted Frank for a quote on a Scott Addict R1 2011 with a cracked top tube. This frame has the flat black paint with the weird copperish silver decals. I shipped the frame and Frank kept in touch during the whole repair, the repair was finished with 2 weeks but Frank emailed explaining that he wasn't happy with the colour matching for the decals, finally after maybe another week he told me he had matched the decal colour and was shipping the frame back to me. Spring 2015 has been a windy one in the Bay area, right? Well, it pains me to admit this but the wind recently took me out on a flat road (Cañada Road in Woodside). A big gust blew a nasty looking branch right into my path and before I knew it, I was coming out of a military roll and watching my Ridley Helium come down from from the sky, take a bounce (tire-side down fortunately) and land on the side of the road. I was unscathed but I found a crack on the right-side dropout. I had previously had a generally positive experience with Predator Cycling in SoCal but I didn't feel like going through the hassle of shipping through a middleman bike shop. I sent a carbon wheel to Spyder Composites to be repaired in February after sending pictures and receiving confirmation that it was something they could repair. I sent the wheel and according to Frank Moir at Spyder, the wheel received additional damage during shipping. No problem, it happens. I was sent an invoice for the repairs which i paid in full immediately. On February 26th, I received an email from Frank stating the wheel is done and would be shipped the next day after they had let the epoxy cure enough to ship. That was on February 26th. I have neither received my wheel nor a shipping notice. I have attempted to contact them multiple times via email and several times by phone. My emails have been ignored and the voicemail is always full. Worst customer service I have been subjected to in a LONG time. ZERO communication, they have gone radio silent. read more

I just got my 2001 Carbon Fiber Trek back from Frank and to say I'm pleased, would be an understatement. I found Frank though Yelp and admit, I was cautious when I read the negative reviews. I wanted to meet him in person, discuss those reviews, and decide for myself. The first meeting was great. He was on time and I was satisfied with his comments on the neg reviews and his plan for my bike. He quoted me a price a time frame. I recently installed a new carbon water bottle cage on my carbon Trek Pilot. One screw went only about half way into the frame, before it became a lot harder to turn, so I backed the screw out, and then started again. This time, the screw went in smoothly, and then without warning, there was a very soft "snapping" sound. The screw and the "nut" inside the frame both started to free spin. I could neither tighten the screw nor remove it, and there was now a pretty large hole in my frame where the "nut" previously resided. One of my friends - an Olympic cyclist - recommended Frank. I called Frank and said, "I think I've ruined my bike." Frank patiently listened to my story, then calmly said, "That's a common repair. The "nut" is riveted to the frame and you probably popped the rivet. Pretty sure it can be fixed." Frank suggested we meet me in the town of Los Gatos, because that was more convenient for me, than meeting at his studio. We met, and I gave Frank the frame. He looked at it, and told me he was sure it was fixable, and gave me an estimate. He was simultaneously confident, professional and reassuring. Consequently, I felt entirely comfortable trusting him with my bike, and the repair. The price was awesome too! The next day Frank called to give me an update: he had already removed the water bottle cage, offending screw, and rivet. He'd also filled the remaining gap with new carbon. "Once the carbon hardens, I will install a new rivet. You can pick up your bike on Tuesday in Los Gatos, or I can deliver it to you in San Francisco on Wed." I opted for delivery. When the time came, the hand off that took less than 60 seconds. Just long enough for me to say, "Wow! Not only did you 'save' the water bottle cage, you installed it!" There are few people on earth who deliver service at Frank's level. I give Spyder my highest recommendation: the full five stars. Only it feels like a bit of a disservice. If the best is five, there ought to be a way to give him six. read more

I've had the same horrible experience with Frank, which is essentially this: * If you complain about him he will get really defensive. He'll even threaten you by saying he'll come down to your workplace to "meet you" because he has your address. Which is by far the most stupidest thing I've ever heard a business do. On at least 3 occasions he mistaken my frame from someone else's frame thus getting my hopes up. * He doesn't provide proof of X-Rays to the damaged frame, meaning, that service which sets him apart from the other repair shops is baseless. Very disappointed in entire process of getting my Look 595 repaired by them. Their customer service was appalling. From the very beginning they couldn't remember my name, which bike was mine, what repair was necessary. They never followed up with me, ever, not once. I had to initiate absolutely every contact with them. It took fully three months for them to complete the work. When they finally invoiced me, the price was fine, about as expected. But when they shipped my bike back it was filthy, it was shipped in a bike box filled, literally, with trash. I suppose they imagined that the trash would be packing material, but it was filled discarded reflectors, scrap bike parts, plastic junk, crumpled up invoices, and some balled up newspaper. And then there's the workmanship, I won't be able to tell if the repair was in fact strong until I ride for a few thousand miles, but the overspray was significant, they didn't bother to polish out the clearcoat, leaving it beaded up and rough around the repair. The repair area included the drive side dropout which was irregularly covered in paint, so much so that I could not properly mount my derailleur hanger so I had to file and sand to get it flat again. Frank repaired my ENVE Classics and they look great! Turnaround and ETA was as quoted, and the whole process was very transparent. This is one of the only carbon repair shops in the West Coast that actually xrays the carbon and then go about the repair, rather than throw some epoxy/resin on the superficial damage and call it a day. I'd definitely recommend anyone to choose Spyder for their carbon repair needs. Just remember that this is a small operation however -- I believe it's just the owner and a couple of employees, so turnaround can be pushed back during the busy season (luckily I got my stuff in during fall/winter when the season was over). read more

First time I had to pay $150 just to strip everything from the carbon frame (and putting back together after repair) before shipping to a carbon repair shop (their requirement). This time I did a bit more research and found Spyder composites who happens to be in South Bay with several good reviews. I took my bike to Frank Moir at Spyder, he did not require the bike to be stripped and fixed the break in one week and at a much lower price than the first shop. Finally got him on the phone and he Blew up! Came to Frank on a recommendation from City Cycle's in Marin Co. My Madone 6 Series had a cracked down tube right between the cable inserts. As it turns out, many top shops in Marin use Spyder Fabrication as I talked around a bit. Frank confirmed the problem and helped me disassemble the bike at his shop on the spot. I was told two weeks and sure enough, the job was finished two weeks on the day. The day I was supposed to come down to the Southbay to pick the bike up, my back went out and was unable to get down there. The following week, I got a call from Frank. He was in Sausalito ( my town) with the finished frame. He had some business up here and was kind enough to bring the frame with him, rather than have me further aggravate my back with a long drive to the South Bay. The repair was done beyond my expectations. The color matching was not only difficult, but perfect. Frank let me know up front there was some fancy (and insignificant) lettering that couldn't be saved or recreated but I was fine with that. I appreciated the fact I was told that up front. I've done business with Calfee in the past. That job would have cost much more than what Frank charged with a much longer wait, not to mention, two trips from the North Bay to Santa Cruz and back. Calfee has nothing up on Frank with regards to the quality of work. Frank keeps his overhead low and passes savings onto his customers. Don't be taken back by the grass roots nature of his business. The positive proof is there. The quality of work, prices and customer service can't be beat. The following is my experience with Spyder Composites (SC). I'm just listing facts; you make your own decision. Frameset with damaged right seat stay was received by SC April 17, 2015. I didn't hear from them for 3-4 weeks so finally contacted them to make sure they were working on the frame. Based on the tracking info I knew they had received it weeks earlier. At no time was I ever unfriendly, needy, or impatient with them. The owner, Frank, said they had worked on it, but sounded surprised when I asked about the new paint job. He didn't think they had the fork and was going to get back to me. He asked me to send pictures again of the paint job I had requested. I had originally sent pictures with my personal info in the bike box along with the frameset. No response... An invoice for work performed arrived via email on June 13th, 2015. I paid the bill within 2 days. No response...and no frameset. I called and talked to Frank a few times over the course of the next 3 months. Every time I called Frank would tell me something had just been done on the frame and it should be shipped soon or most often he wasn't at the shop and would need to check on it with his guys. One time only did he ever call or text me back. I was never terse with him until sometime in September when I told him I just wanted my frame back. Still, no response... My frameset finally returned to me from SC on Oct 8, 2015. This was to be a 2-4 week repair, took almost 6 months, and at no time was there any correspondence initiated by SC. I had to call and/or text numerous times to ask ETA of frameset. The frameset was returned only after filing a claim with the District Attorney's office in Santa Clara County, CA. There was never any reason given by SC for the extreme delay. The frame seems to be repaired, but I am very leery to ride it due to my overall experience. They say they X-ray the items and that their repair process is better than competitors, but who's to say after the runaround I received. The frameset is painted, but not how it was supposed to be painted. All artwork had been sent twice. When I called Frank to tell him I received the frame I told him it wasn't painted as I requested and he started telling me some other excuse, like normal, as to the change. He said he thought he had told me it had to be painted twice and I told him "no, you've never contacted me about anything through this entire process." He had nothing to say. There is "orange peel" on some of the paint work that is so rough you can feel it with your hand. I work in the cycling industry and have no idea how this company can be allowed to stay in business with this type of business ethic. Use at your own risk. read more

Frank, at Spider Composites has had my bike frame for over a year and I am starting to believe I will never get it back. At first he told me he kept forgetting about it. Then he said it would be fixed painted and shipped in a week. Then he said he didn't get payment for shipping so I said I will pay right now over the phone. I was told no he needed the it invoiced. So, I asked him to send an invoice. A week later no invoice so I called again, left about 15 messages over a two week period before I got him on the phone. I was told the bike was boxed up and already shipped. Two weeks later no bike. After about a dozen calls/messages without a return call from Spider Composites, I got Frank on the phone and he said there was a problem with the paint and he needed to start over. Then after another week, he tells me he can't find the paint anywhere so I said just send the bike back as is. 4 weeks later no bike and no return phone calls. When I did finally get in touch with the owner, Frank, he said he found the paint and it is in the paint booth and it will be sent in 2 days. I can keep going but you get the picture. This Has been going on for a year. I just want my frame and fork back. I chose Spider Composites because of a review in Bicycle Magazine. I had a very bad experience. My frame was sent in for just a color change. Frank had my frame for a 2.5 months and constant calls to him that I needed adapter. Well it was probably totally forgotten about cause he rushed the job and when I finally got it looked like crap. Looked like a kid painted it, and there were specs of paint on top of the final coat all over it. I called him and said I was very upset and would be very embarrassed to build it up. Frank came up with a lot of excuses. Not to mention that he didn't paint it like I asked. So I sent it back with very detailed instructions. Well he had it for two and a half months again and didn't add a few stickers that were supposed to be on it. Again he came up with excuses of why they didn't work. The second time I had to buy my own stickers because he couldn't get the font correct and some of the font edges were painted over. I had to call, text and email every week to get status and sometimes he would respond. So if you don't care how your paint job looks, go ahead and send it to spyder composites. Forgot to add in that he painted the frame the second time free of charge. During this process I heard other people having the same issues. I will never use spyder composite for any of their services again. Plus I was not a new customer to their business. read more

Where do I begin? Spyder Composites was contacted to do my bike frame's top tube repair, which was responded with 'We should be able to get this done in a week'. So as instructed, I cleaned my bike frame, packed it, and had it shipped via BikeFlight (2-day shipping) to them. It arrived to them on a Friday. The next week I expected them to contact me to confirm receipt of my frame, but no response from them. After 2 days, I decided to contact them since no confirmation received from them. Shockingly, I was told as a first response that they did not receive the frame and when I responded by indicating I had received shipment confirmation from FedEx (via BikeFlights) and indicated who had signed for it, only then I was told they 'should have it then' to which I was told they would check and let me know. After several days, again, no response to this. After contacting them several different days, I finally received confirmation they had my frame and was working on the repair. This was now about one week later. Moving forward in time and after several texts and phone calls, which I was told each time the frame was completed and just needed to be painted, now we are into 2-2 1/2 weeks. Now, I was contacting them repeatedly to get confirmation on when the paint was going to be completed and the frame shipped back to me. Several different texts and phone calls during the span of 2 weeks I was told each time it would ship out that day, but still no shipping confirmation tracking information was sent to me. Finally, I received shipping tracking information over one month after they received my frame. Just to clarify the type of repair needed, it was the top tube with stress fracture cracking on the middle section. The repair should have included sanding, new carbon sheeting added, and paint/clear coat. The end result was a repair that was average (could still see where the repair was done due to the carbon wrap overlapping higher than the original frame from side views and painting that was smooth enough on top, but roughly unfinished underneath the entire top tube (Probably due to matching needed). The lettering was not re-stenciled to match the original paint job, but due to the complexity, this is acceptable, however, no clear coating applied, which should have been done. As for the cost of the repair, it was average to other 'professional' competitors. Overall, with the communication being so poor (Only when I contacted them), time of repair taking longer than you would expect for the type of repair needed, and the end result of the repair not being much better than what I would expect an experienced amateur to have done, I find it difficult to give more than a mediocre rating. read more

This is my first Yelp review, but I felt that I had to write one to warn people about this company, both in the work that they do and their terrible customer service. I was racing on a set of carbon tubular wheels and one of my tires blew during a descent, resulting in a cracked wheel. I knew Calfee couldn't do a wheel if the brake track was involved in the crack so I sent it to Frank instead. His website says that they will get repairs done in six weeks, and it ultimately took me over eight weeks to get him to mail the wheel back to me. Multiple times I was told it was finished only to wait a week and be told that what he had just told me was in fact untrue. Long after his website promised it would be finished, and after having to ask him for the bill several times I received my wheel back in the hope that all was now well. Because race season had now ended my wheel went into storage until this spring. I took the wheel out of storage and went to glue a new tubular on it, only to find a new, larger, crack in the rim. This wheel was not ridden and spent the winter in a safe place where it would not experience any sort of impact or pressure, so I do not know how this occurred. Upon contacting Frank, he said that he would look at it again free of charge, including shipping. I gave him my address and asked for a shipping label to be sent so I could get it out to him and waited. A week later, I contacted him again. I think I gave up the third or fourth time that I gave him my address to no avail. Do not use this business if you want a repair done in a timely fashion, and while they might do a good job on frames, I'm not sure I would trust any wheel repair they do. read more

I first contacted this company back in February. I had a couple of cracks in my front wheel. I sent a few photos per their request. The owner states that it will be no big deal and to go ahead and ship it out. It'll take about two weeks to have it back to you, he stated. I tracked the shipment and contacted him again to verify he received it on March 17th, delivery shows on the 14th. He stated he did not receive it, even though it stated it was signed for. Finally he found the package. He responded that it can not be fixed. It's too far out of true. Ok? He said he would send it back to me. Days, weeks, months go by. I ask him periodically if he had a chance to ship the wheel back to me yet and when I should expect it. I got ten dozen different responses before I finally received my wheel back today 5/23 for example: it's going out tomorrow, we moved shops and it's in storage, and finally via email "my top priority is not to ship your broken wheel back, if it's that important fly to California and pick it up." Wow! Over two months and I finally got my wheel back! I took it to my local bike shop and it's in fact not out of true at all. Now to find a good carbon wheel repair shop, as Spyder Composites is NOT the place for the job! This guy could use some business 101 courses. What a joke of an establishment! read more
