I've been going to Spruce for the last year and I feel I have finally found stylists and colorists that I trust. I am one of those people who has never really known what haircut fits my face shape; but Amanda always knows and I always get so many compliments on my hair. At Spruce they take their time and I leave feeling pampered and refreshed. I was looking for a new stylist and came across an article in the Austin Monthly magazine for the new salon. I called to schedule and was randomly given Lindsey for an appt. I just finished with my appointment and have to say this is the best cut I have had in a very long time. Since I have moved out to this area 2 yrs ago, I have been looking for someone who does a really great cut, and am so happy to have finally found someone. She was very personable and did a great job of listening to what I wanted. Fabulous ! I am visiting from out of town and I desperately needed a root touch up and a haircut. I was a little nervous about telling them I was a one visit customer thinking they wouldn't really care about whether I was happy with the end results or not since they would probably never see me again. I was wrong!! From the moment I walked in I could tell that they have a team of true artist. From Communicating regarding goals and expectations to the end results every detail is considered. They took the time to teach me the proper way to blow dry my hair to reduce the frizz etc. At dinner that evening I was told it was the best color that I've had in years. Seriously, I should have been the before and after advertisement for this salon. After avoiding a haircut like the plague after a slew of salons that I wasn't happy with, I made an appointment at Spruce because it's right next to where I work. So, there I am, split ends and all and Jo made me feel less embarrassed about my bad hair situation. I ended up trying the Keratin Treatment (only $25 - and worth every cent) to aid my poor hair and plan to continue getting the treatment with future haircuts. I loved Jo! It was refreshing to go to someone who actually had an opinion on what cut is a good fit for you and your texture, while taking into consideration your goals for a morning routine. I've had far to many haircuts where I'm given a great haircut, but then I'm never able to re-create the style ever again. Not the case here. Want a stylish short-cut? Lindsey @ Spruce is the best! I drive 30 minutes one way just to see her. And would drive an hour more! She's fun, friendly and always exceeds my expectations. I just got home from my first appointment here with Amanda and I LOVE what she did with my hair!! I walked in with long hair that wasn't doing a whole lot of anything and walked out with the cutest bob EVER. Now I know how it feels to be ScarJo! My hair feels like silk and the disconnected look of the bob puts me right back into this century (I still can't stop touching my hair!)....en route home, I stopped by the Hey Cupcake trailer to perfect my already great day and got compliments on my hair while standing in line...I will definitely be back to see Amanda! I'm new to Austin and had the bright idea to ombre my dark brunette hair last week. I've colored my hair a total of three times in my entire life and have serious trust issues when it comes to stylists (thanks to some horrible experiences in the past). However, being from NYC I always expect the best when it comes to high end salons. I wouldn't say I'm a hair snob, but I also don't mind paying for quality work. I find that it largely depends on the stylist and not so much the salon itself. I decided to get a consultation with Leah after hours of research. She had rave reviews all over the place and I figured this was a sure bet... I visited the salon last Wed for the mandatory consultation and specifically went over what I wanted. Basically a Kate Beckinsale/Rachel Bilson/Victoria Secret model type of ombre look. Very natural looking with DARK roots and blended lighter strands. Simple enough, no? She even showed me her Pinterest page with the exact same photos and I felt like we were on the same page. She quoted me $200, not including the cut. I thought it was definitely on the high end, but I assumed I was going to be wowed. I returned that Friday and it went downhill from there. The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. Leah got started right away. Originally she said the entire process (color, cut & style) would take 2-3 hours max. Three hours later and she had just finished up with my color. She went on to work with another client while Amanda cut/styled my hair. Amanda was great, she did exactly what I asked for. However, once she started drying my hair I immediately panicked. My dark brunette hair had strands of violet red all over. Definitely not the golden caramel ombre I had asked for. I was literally in shock. Leah met me in the changing room before I left and seemed surprised with the result. She said there would be no charge and wanted me to give her a chance to fix it. I agreed and returned to Spruce yesterday. I showed up first thing in the morning and Leah got started on my hair yet again. She was never very vocal about what happened the first time nor what she was doing this time around. She proceeded to add a toner 3 times and after another hour in the sink she called another stylist over to dry my hair. It's definitely lighter, but now looks look like a red/orange color as opposed to the golden/yellow tones I asked for. The texture of my hair feels awful and I actually have bleach stains on parts of my roots (which I specifically asked not to be touched). Before I left, Leah actually told me that ombre had touches of "orange and violet," which I definitely don't see evidence of in any of the photos I showed her. Although she never ended up charging me, I still don't feel like it justifies going through an experience like this. I'm also a bridesmaid in a wedding on Sunday to boot (note to self, do not mess with hair prior to major events). The conclusion is this - my natural color is now a few shades lighter, random sections of my roots are bleached and I'm on my way to purchase a purple shampoo in hopes that it removes some of the brassiness. I'm really disappointed with the results and already have plans to go back to a dark brunette color at another salon downtown in a few weeks. For these prices, you should be walking out of the salon feeling like a celebrity. Sadly, not the case here. read more

I want to be very careful in how I articulate this review because I don't want to come off as an angry person. I'm not. In fact, most who know me would say I'm one of the most genuinely happy people they know...consistently. But I'm not happy today. In fact, it's been two days since my last horrible experience at Spruce and so I've decided to go ahead with my negative review. I avoid writing bad reviews because one bad experience can be just that, ONE bad experience, which shouldn't be over generalized. And bad reviews can also kill a small business, something I hate to see. But in the case of Spruce Salon I've been met with seriously horrific customer service on multiple visits so it's time to speak out. And I do so in the hopeful spirit that the owners of Spruce will have awareness and can learn. So here we go. The front-desk employees are just downright rude and patronizing. I've been taking my daughter, who's 12, there for the past year, because she has very thick, long hair that is truly a woman's cut. Despite that, and the fact that I pay a LOT of money for her service (and we also buy lots of product each time), they've been aloof toward her every time, acting like they're doing her a big favor to extend their services to her (as a child). Their front desk people never look at her, only me, which I hate. She's their customer! She should be treated with respect. But worse is their 15-minute "policy", which means that if you're more than15-minutes late they refuse to do your service. We live almost an hour away and, on this Tuesday's visit, en route to her appointment, we got caught in bad construction traffic on Highway 71. At 4 minutes past our appointment time the front-desk person called to confirm that we were on our way. I said, yes and we'll be there in 8-10 minutes, is that OK? She said yes. And I asked if they still have their 15-minute policy and she said yes, come on in. Great. We arrived at 16-minutes after, having done the VERY best we could in really awful traffic. When we walked in, someone was being helped at the front desk but there were others in back of the salon that saw us come in but not a single person acknowledged us. About 5 minutes went by when then front-desk person finally turned to us. I let her know we were there for my daughter's haircut when she said, without hesitation and without first checking with the stylist, "Oh, I'm sorry, you missed your window so we won't have time to see you today." First, no one acknowledged us upon arrival. Second, it was the last appointment of the day so we weren't making anyone else late. Third, when this person called she knew our timing to arrive and told us to "come on in" then flatly and rudely turned us away upon arrival. If they knew they couldn't service us, they should have had us turn around when they called us and not wasted our time! That is the minimum courtesy they should have extended. As it was, the two women at the front, the receptionist and one hair dresser, were BOTH totally rude, condescending and patronizing in what was, for us, a very frustrating situation. They seemed not to care AT ALL if we left the salon and never came back, much less if we left and posted deservedly poor reviews. It was astonishing how little they seemed to care! I understand why the 15-minute policy exists. They're running a business and one person being late can affect other customers and stylists all day long. But the lack of flexibility in the policy and the harsh rudeness of those enforcing it at the salon are incredulous. We're happy to take our business elsewhere, as well as the business of the six other Spruce customers we know and with whom we've since shared our experience. I just got home from my appointment at Spruce. A few weeks ago, I did some research online for salons in the area, and decided on Alli. However, today after getting dressed, driving over, and waiting for 20 minutes, Alli said based on the picture I brought, she wouldn't have time to do my hair today. I couldn't believe what she was saying. She said that I would need 3-4 hours and she didn't have time today; wrote down the hours she worked and sent me on my way. I am speechless. I only wanted highlights and tint to cover my gray - something I've been doing for 10 years and which I discussed when I made my appointment. Wow. read more

We've been going to the Aveda salon on Bee Caves in the Randalls shopping center near Mopac for close to 10 years. Being consistent and loyal customers of Aveda, we were really excited that Spruce Salon, being an Aveda salon, was opening up so close to our home. The first two appointments were with ALLIE who was LOVELY. She listened to what my mother wanted and delivered. She was gentle and attentive, exactly what we have expected and received from Aveda salons all over the US and even in the UK. The third time, this August (2013) my mom was seen by LEAH, and this appointment was a TOTAL DISASTER. First, she didn't listen to what my mom wanted done. We showed pictures and talked about colors, we wanted her to do a brown-grey blending but whatever we would say, she would offer something different and push that it was better. We finally asked her politely to do what we originally wanted and she reluctantly agreed. When she was done it looked nice, but by the very next morning, all of it rinsed out in the shower. The two times Allie did this, it lasted 6 weeks before beginning to fade. Leah's job didn't even last 12 hours. As mistakes happen, we weren't upset; we went back to the salon to discuss this with Leah and have it corrected. First, she was highly defensive, not admitting to doing anything wrong when the results are clearly obvious that she did not use demi-permanent dye. Second, as she was assessing the job she had done on my mother's hair, the way she was man-handling my mother's head was extremely unprofessional and very clearly expressed her negativity. My mother and I were unused to being treated this way by Aveda salon staff and were taken aback. She refused to correct her mistake herself, and instead asked another staff member to do it. Unfortunately, this one did the same thing as Leah and the dye rinsed out in two days. I stopped by at Spruce Salon a week later to discuss my unhappiness with Leah's behavior. She wouldn't even see me and her staff told me that she would call me back. When she did, she was curt and rude, and handed off the phone almost immediately to the receptionist who offered to refund us. She took my mom's address while smirking on the phone. It's been 4 months and my mom hasn't gotten a check in the mail. After that incident, we refuse to go back and instead go to the Aveda Salon at Barton Creek Mall. read more

I am never one to write complaints as I just think that most circumstances deserve another shot however my experience at this salon was so beyond disappointing that I couldn't not say something. The most unfortunate thing is that my complaint is with the owner and manager Leah. You'll see in other reviews that she seems to have a "standard" post to all negative feedback but I'm here to tell you that her attitude during the situation is anything but concerned about 100% customer satisfaction. She never offered to make things right and I can promise you I won't return. I spent 5 hours in the salon today and walked away with nothing more than a root touch-up, a 24 foil highlight (yes I counted) a haircut, charged full fare and had to blow dry my own hair because they couldn't accommodate that part of the service because they were closing. The largest part of my frustration is that at NO time did Leah EVER say that in order to get my hair where she thought I should go with it would it take 5 hours and then proceeded to "blame" me for not knowing otherwise. When did it become my job to understand her job? At the point that my haircut and root touch up was complete Leah asked me if I wanted to come back another day to "finish" things. This was after she tried to convince me that maybe I didn't need anything else done. Are you kidding...I now had 2 inches of dark roots that needed to be blended back in with my blond highlights. What?? I leave in 3 days for a trip of a lifetime....no I'm not coming back. I'm just appalled at the lack of customer service that she has for a local store owner. You can bet that I will share with every Lakeway connection I have the terrible experience that cost me $230 and 5 hours of my time. read more

I've been going to Spruce Salon for almost a year and will never return. I came in for full highlights and a blowout and left the salon in tears. My colorist rushed through the foils and then passed me on to his assistant, who washed my hair, put on the toner, and did the blowdry and style. I bit my tongue and did not say anything because I thought maybe she knew what she was doing. She proceeded to spray water all over my back, which left me with a soaked sweater and did not properly put on the toner. When I told her I wanted lots of volume and wave, she said, "sure" and gave me stiff, straight, partially-dry hair. My colorist was busy talking with another client and only came up to me as I was paying the bill. I paid over $200 for a senior stylist and I got junior stylist results. What's worse, I had several holiday events to attend and had to make an appointment with another salon to fix my hair. I will never go back to Spruce salon and am incredibly angry and disappointed that they treated me with such disrespect and ruined my hair. read more

I really wanted to like Spruce since I love Aveda products and it's so close by. But after two visits, I'm headed to another salon. First visit - talked into a "deep conditioner" that cost $20 extra and actually made my hair drier. The cut was OK but not great and a little shorter than I wanted. But not a terrible visit and so I came back and they insisted that I needed a deep conditioner again - they said I must have had the wrong one at the first visit. So here we go again, a $20 extra charge for drying out my hair. And this time the cut was terrible; if I didn't part it exactly as done that day, I had long and short strands all at the front and it was too short to try to fix. I managed with barrettes until it grew long enough to go elsewhere. read more

I was sitting at the Whole Foods Market in Bee Caves thumbing through one of the free magazines while getting a quick bite to eat. Can't remember which magazine it was but Spruce Salon had a one page ad that caught my eye. So, I had an impulsive moment and decided I desperately needed a haircut. I called not expecting to get in, but I did. (Business was slow at the salon that day due to first day of ACL) The receptionist was very sweet and patient on the phone and when I walked in, it was like I was a long-time client. She introduced me to my stylist Tanner. He understood what I wanted for my fantasy cut and got to work. Tanner is so enthusiastic and talented! I love the cut. The salon itself is not over-hyped, but rather has a sophisticated and relaxing vibe. I like that. And since this is an Aveda salon, they use only Aveda products, which are very good products (in my opinion). To top off my happy experience, I got the check - it was totally reasonable. Sometimes I regret my impulsive purchases, but not this one! read more

I gave it a few weeks to write this but I figured I should warn other people. The moment I walked in to have my hair done by Leah, she acted like a bitch and as if I was wasting her time. She didn't take her time highlighting my hair and left HuGe spots to where I had to end up going to another salon to get it fixed because of her lack of attention to me. There was a girl who I had initially met when buying product who I wanted to schedule my appointment with originally but it didn't work out that way, her name was Callie I think. Anyway, don't come here. They'll screw up your hair and not take accountability for it... And in pretty sure it was the owner who acted like that. read more

I went to Leah at Spruce with a picture in hand and specific instructions to cover all my gray, and put more light brown/ caramel in my highlights that had become brassy and blonder. We spent at least 10 minutes talking about what I wanted, and I said the main reason I color my hair is to cover the gray. I was there a total of 3 hours, and when more color had to be mixed, Leah sent her assistant to do it. Now, I was paying higher to have Leah do my color, but didn't say anything. When her assistant washed my hair and had me back in the chair to blow dry, I was concerned because I immediately saw gray- all over my temples and part. The assistant could tell I was upset but she was very sweet and said let her dry and style it and then we'll look. Sure enough, when she finished I was so disappointed. My hair looked more blonde and I had gray showing from my roots. In all the years I've had my hair highlighted and colored, this had never happened! When Leah came over to see if I liked it, I stayed calm but let her know this wasn't what we discussed at all. I said remember I said I didn't like the blonde and definitely didn't want to see gray? She told me I had agreed to just highlighting and no color which left me baffled because I made it so clear to cover the gray - however you do that... Why would I agree to not cover my gray? She asked if I could stay another hour, so they could do the roots but it was now 5pm- I had gotten there at 2pm, and had to pick up my toddler. I left so disheartened, and Leah knew that. I never got a call back or anything, and Leah didn't seem concerned that I was clearly upset. I guess she doesn't need new clients. The saddest part of all of this is that CJ does awesome cuts! But I won't go back because Leah owns the salon. Also, please Leah and Spruce, don't bother responding to my review. Would have meant so much more getting a call from you after you knew I left unhappy. That was over 2 weeks ago... read more

I love my hair! I'm 60 years old, and I've only said that maybe 3 or 4 times in my whole life! I have very fine hair, and not much of it! I am new to Lakeway and Spruce Salon was recommended to me by a new acquaintance. I was handed over to Leah for color and CJ for the cut. I told them both that I was trusting them completely to make suggestions and to go for whatever they thought I needed. Leah thought that my color was too light and too green tinted! I knew it was too light and too blonde from many years on the west coast, but green! Yuk! She also said that the color did nothing for my eyes, and she thought they were pretty and could be brought out by the right color. Now, I have plain old brown eyes, and didn't know what she meant, but I told her to go for it. The color was a lot darker than I had, and once the partial highlights were added, my hair looked like the hair I was born with! How did she know that? CJ 's cut was very flattering and the product recommendations for my fine hair were spot on! Pure Abundance shampoo, Color Conserve conditioner, and Smooth Infusion and Pure Abundance style preps. My new hair was easy to style and feels full and fabulous! I love my new salon! And, by the way, four people this week told me that my eyes are pretty! read more
