So it had been at least a year and half since I had my hair cut. When I moved away from my hometown 4 years ago that meant that I also left my Aunt who had been cutting my hair my whole life. I thought and stressed a bit about where to go in Austin to get this done for about 2 months. From what I had looked at I could tell the prices are a little more in Austin than some other places. I asked around to friends and got a few recommendations. Then I found out that there was a salon across the street from my job and a co-workers mother owned the salon. I all of sudden felt some sort of connection to the salon. Now it wasn't the same as my connection to my Aunt, but somehow it made me feel OK or even better knowing that I had some sort of link to the salon. I then decided to schedule my appointment through their website ... it was super easy! I would rather schedule appointments online than call any day. About a week later I showed up that afternoon for my appointment with Mary Ann. I was greeted by the girl at the front counter and she knew it was my first time visiting and offered to take me on a tour of the salon. This was an unexpected and a nice gesture. I was a bit early and Mary Ann was still with a client so the front desk attendant offered me a beverage. I sat on the couch and looked at the wall of accessories that they also had for sale. I immediately fell in love with a beautiful necklace I knew I knew was going to have to leave with. Before I knew it Mary Ann approached me and I sat down in her chair. I immediately felt comfortable. We talked for a bit about my hair what I was looking for and my plans. I then headed over to the shampoo bowl where Paula (I think that is her name) shampooed and conditioned my hair. She did an awesome job and I was impressed with her skills! I went back to Mary Ann's chair and she went at it! After everything was done I cute 4 inches off and I was pleased. Mary Ann did an awesome job! I am glad I went with my choice. I have fine, thin hair and Mary Ann cut it when it was wet first, then after it was dried she was very meticulous to ensure there no wild hairs she had missed or decided to do something of their own ... because my hair will do that. I appreciated the time she took! If you are looking for a salon in Austin or South Austin I would definitely recommend checking out Catena & Co. Mary Ann is awesome! I found out that my boss also used this salon and Suzanne has been cutting her hair for years. So you probably will not go wrong with any stylist you decide to go with. read more

I decided to stop coloring my hair - I always colored at home - and started the long and difficult journey of letting my natural silver grow in. Mary Ann helped so much and she never - like many stylists do - talked me out of my decision to go natural. She gave me different haircuts during the process that all helped to hide the dreaded demarcation line. Not once did she suggest to use highlights or lowlights or anything involving color. Some stylist are really trying to push you, she was very understanding and always listened to me and gave good advice. Now I am fully transitioned and I couldn't be happier. I have been going to Suzanne at Catena and Co for over seven years now - as a matter of fact, I followed her when they moved to two different locations throughout the years. I have a short haircut that is both spiky and feminine, and I spent one year in Austin before I found Suzanne - she does a wonderful job for me and her price is SUPER REASONABLE! The staff at Catena and Co are always very friendly, scheduling is a breeze, and they always prepare either hot tea to your liking or cold drinks for you on a hot day upon your arrival. I visited Catena this weekend as I was part of a wedding party getting their hair done for the big event. With that said, I was very impressed! The people were fantastic and so attentive to all of us. They really listened to what we wanted done with our hair and made it happen. Tiffani Reimer has done my hair for about five years. I trust her completely. First we started with dark lowlights on my salt and pepper hair. I got compliments all the time, and it was so pretty when it was long with long silver hair with dark lowlights. Then I let my hair grow out and made the mistake of drug store dying my own hair. Ugh. So she fixed me. We went to short, blonde with darker highlights so that I wouldn't have to cover my white/grey roots as often. I get compliments on my hair all the time, and I don't have to cover roots. So we went from really, really long, dark self-inflicted dyed hair to really beautiful blonde with about three or four different shades. I love the cut. It's bob length. The process of lightening it up took several months, but now she does exactly what it needs. Tiffani always makes me feel comfortable, and the shop is very welcoming. Everyone there treats you like they remember you and are glad you came. The shop has all kinds of goodies to buy in addition to wonderful skin and hair care products. I've bought earrings there twice. I recommend Catena without any reservation for any kind of hair project you have. The salon is like a hidden gem in South Austin. The prices are competitive, and Tiffani is wonderful about working around your schedule. She's a busy stylist because she is in demand, but wait for her. read more
