New FAV spot alert!! This spotlight location is AWESOME! The parking is honestly just as challenging as the downtown location,but once you get over that this place is a total GEM! I came here for a birthday party that was in one of the private rooms and our customer service was pretty good,they were pretty swamped but I think that it was as good as it could have been. The food and drinks were fairly priced.Would definitely come back here soon! read more

Let's start by saying the only reason this place deserved two stars from me was because the nice owner's wife decided to let my group of friends in without paying the cover. Putting that aside... Lets begin with THERE IS A COVER. Of the numerous karaoke bars I have been to, and I have been to a lot since I looovvee karaoke, I have never been charged a cover to get in. On top of that, I was told to wear my hat straight before I could enter. Must be a fancy place, with a cover fee at the door and strict dress code. THE PLACE WAS GHETTO AS !@#$%. It had several private rooms, and a stage to sing on for those who wanted to sit outside in the open. Very spacious, but very ghetto and run-down looking. We decided to sit outside instead of getting a private room - which was a mistake. WARNING: This is not a place for college students. Everyone there were in there 30's and older., some were MUCH older. The song selection was completely OUTDATED as well. If you wanted any recent songs, you had to search it up on the internet and made sure there was a karaoke version on youtube before you requested it. And with people TIPPING THE DJ to have their song skip to the front of the line, we only got to SING TWICE out of the 3 HOURS we spent there! Not only did we not have fun, but instead, we got to listen to old, raspy voices screeching out lyrics to an endless number of old songs from the 80's and 90's. And now for the prices. EXPENSIVE. The food was a very small proportion given the price, wasn't that good at all, AND we had to wait a long a$$ time because there was only ONE CHEF. A tiny, fragile looking Asian man who looks like he could use a cane to move around. As for the drinks. prices weren't even listed! When all of us got up to pay at the end, we were blown away by how big our bill was. $3 for a bottle of water, and over $10 for my rum and coke, which I could tell was made with well liquor. Cocktails were way above $15 per drink. If you ever feel like going to karaoke, there are plenty of other better options around Houston. read more

This is my very 1st 4 Star Review! Well deserved too. Yelpers, this is one of my favorite spots to go. It is where friends, family, co-workers, loved ones and just about anyone can go and have a great time. It is broken down into different sections. As you enter the bar, there is the Main floor with the huge stage to the back. It is where people stumble in and say...hey look at that guy on stage. He sounds pretty good, or he sounds horrible, or aawww he's trying.....Let's have a drink.. Then 2 hrs. later. you end up being "that guy or girl". Now if you're really a baller, you will reserve either of the 5 "private rooms". This is my favorite. i am actually spoiled on the private rooms. I have hosted karaoke parties every month for the past 7 mos. at "The Spot" We usually reserve room 4 or 5. They are the two largest rooms that holds up 50 to 60 folks. You get to run your own karaoke machine and there you are assigned your own private waitress. This is the same for all the other private rooms too. Charlie is the owners and is a great guy. If you end up spending a lot of $$ he will even buy you a shot of your choice. that is when you know you have spent lots of money. So, if you are celebrating a bday party, happy hour, choir rehearsal, wedding, divorces, final exams, sporting events, pre-club action or just want to get some FREE entertainment, this is your place. We understand technically difficulties but the fact that we've been in quietness for 15 minutes is unacceptable. This review needed to be updated since now I actually have experienced one of their private rooms. I came here again for a birthday party. They were inforcing a pretty strict dress code the night I came. They actually have a long list posted at the front as you approach. Good thing we had a room or else I don't think I would have gotten in. Anyways once we were in our room the sound proofing seemed good. I couldn't hear any of the noise from the main room. The private rooms provided us with a computer with a search program and winamp. You just typed in whatever song you wanted into their search program and it qeued up the song for you. This technique is way better than searching through those stupid books. The TVs need to be updated, they had 1 LCD and the rest were big bulky CRT. The microphones need to be updated too, wireless mics please! The tables looked nice, but some were peeling from drinks and you could tell they were just wood tables covered to look like marble tables. Clever, but fail on the warping. If you have a room you get a private server. The drinks from the private server seemed normal strength and they come A LOT faster. If you come here you definately should get one of the private rooms! read more

I've been to this spotlight quiet a few times already and I don't think I've ever had a bad experience with the service, equipment, or the people here. I saw that another fellow rock star-wannabe had mentioned that they don't play your requests if your Asian. Well, I'm pretty sure I'm Asian (at least the last time I looked in the mirror) and my song requests always get played every time I go. The only private room that I've used here is the smallest room they have and I'm going to say that the room is probably big enough to accommodate around 12 - 15 people. The song selections in the private room is done through a computer on the side and is very easy to use. Their songs selections also get updated with newer songs pretty frequently. As for service, it could get slow at times but this place does really get packed, but every time I order something, I always get it. Beer? got it! Cocktail? got it! And I haven't gotten a bad attitude from any of the servers. Also, another yelper had mentioned that shorts aren't allowed here. I'm not really sure when spotlights started enforcing that rule because about a year ago (I think), I had come here in shorts and flip-flops for a friend's birthday and I just walked in there no problem. So if you're looking for a place to unleash your inner Michael Buble or whatever, Spotlight is the place to go. Both locations (westheimer and midtown) are pretty damn awesome! read more

I came here for a birthday party, which was held in a private room. It was probably one of my favorite karaoke experiences. Some of the points I noted... Pros: - You can bring in your own food - They provide tables for set-up - Very spacious - Friendly/prompt servers Neutral: - Sometimes there is a lag with the lyrics on the screen and the song, but they easily fixed it after we reported the problem - You can hear people singing in the main area, but it's not a big deal Cons: - You can't bring in drinks of any kind - Expensive drinks and food - No tape on walls, confetti, glitter decorations in the rooms It was definitely an enjoyable experience and I'd come back for sure. They did have a $400 food/drink spending limit we needed to meet for the private room, so make sure you invite a bunch of friends. :) read more

This place was incredibly fun. We were in town for a work conference and we decided to have some fun and relax from a long day. This was the perfect place! The atmosphere was !!! I've been coming to Spotlight for years on the Westheimer Location and not much has changed. It still has the smell of their signature fried chicken wings emanating in the air and the sound of Love's lost souls singing their hearts out on the stage set for those daring enough to serenade. However, the vibe is always good, the wide music selection is on a computer, and the DJ cues effortlessly. They offer private rooms if that's what you and your party prefers. They have a variety of sizes to fit most large parties. The food here is great bar bites to ease the hunger. And the wide selection of alcohol and bottle service can satiate any Thirst for life! All in all, a great place to have a good time, eat, drink and sing your hearts out. Or bravely listen to others! read more

Spotlight is great! the main floor get packed on weekends so if you don't get there early and you like to do the Karaoke you can have quite a wait between songs. Private rooms are were it's at here though... put your deposit down, and as long as you get to your tab minimum you get refunded your full deposit. Song selection is constantly growing although I've noticed that the main floor selection is a bit more updated than the private room. Only dinging a star because of the song selection not being quite as up to date as I'd like.. I mean with you tube everything's available right away. That and the water is waay too expensive, I think they should provide free water for rooms since they are guaranteed a return. Staff is always friendly and helpful, I've done my last 2 B-Day parties at Spotlight and been there more times than I can count for friends parties, it's a great time every time. read more

Lots of fun and great atmosphere! They have a hue selection of songs to pick from, you write it on a piece of paper and hand it to the DJ. I went on a Saturday night and my group was able to be on stage pretty often. They also allow you to bring outside food in until 10:30, when their sushi bar opens, which is pretty great because they don't serve food before that. The cover is $10/person. They accept cards and cash. There is parking in front and in the back of the shopping center. It does get pretty packed on the weekends so just be ready to be patient with finding parking. read more

This place is possibly the worst establishment i have been to in houston. The waitresses are rude and condescending. The vibe is totally off and I would prefer to sing karaoke alone in my shower over this dump. My friends and I also felt super unsafe and the bathrooms were DISGUSTING. Lol let me start off by saying I've been in the industry and bartender for over 20 years. The drink prices here are astronomical for what they are. 12$ for ciroc?!? When did ciroc become Belvedere? And 3$ for a can of coke that I don't even get the whole can just poured over ice like it's something special? Lmao and no industry specials? Nothing? I work down the street from here and I assure you this will be my first and last visit. Sorry spotlight you're not the only karaoke spot in town. I haven't been to this location in YEARS. It was VERY crowded, and pretty dirty. I just felt like I had to instantly shower as soon as I left.... I witnessed a server get into a really big argument with a customer. There was a $10 fee just to get in. Completely NOT worth it. We will not be returning to this Karaoke place. read more

My car was broken into, despite the fact that they have security out there. It was my car and one other car. When I asked security did he see anything and why is he out there if cars still got broken into, he said he is only paid to watch 4 cars, the waitresses cars... pretty much tells me that they know this is an issue here, but rather then fix the problem and hire security, the waitresses just hired security for their vehicles. Smh very sad and concerning. When we went in and asked the workers inside, they verified the security guards statement. I'm confused so does this mean we have to hire our own security guard when we come here or take a risk? I won't be coming here again unless the issue regarding security is fixed. We got there pretty early and the parking lot in the front was PACKED. Back of the building seems sketchy but we had no choice but to park there. Upon walking up to the establishment, they do ID you so have it ready. It's a small place with a bar in the center. If you're a brave soul, you'll definitely enjoy it because the stage is in the back of the place. Luckily, our party had a room reserved. Definitely spacious and they said it could fit up to 25 people. I don't recall having 25 people but I could be wrong lol. Great thing about reserving a room is food and drinks go towards your room. Just want to point out that the drinks are extremely expensive. If you miss the waitress... good luck. It'll be about 15-20 minutes before she comes back. Do NOT order at the bar or it won't go towards the tab. They do warn you that also... Should have known it was a warning that our waitress doesn't come around often :X Not much of a big selection on songs but pleasant enough. Definitely a blast from the past! So prepare to sing some oldies!! Of course there are the really popular songs like Adele. Overall experience, decent. Would I go back? I'm not sure... We came here for my husbands 40th this past weekend. The staff is EXTREMELY polite and very helpful. The room we booked was very spacious and great for a birthday party! We had the best time! Hitting the drink price limit was not a problem. Unfortunately we will not be returning due to the prices of the drinks. If you don't mind spending between $150-$200 per person/couple then this place is great. And they charge you $40 (I'm assuming for gratuity) a week later. We were expecting to spend some money but that is a little much for just s few drinks per person. The 12 pack bucket of bud light is $46 dollars. Just to much. read more

Screw this place! I'm a responsible drinker. I took a cab here for a birthday party. I had every intention of drinking copious amounts of alcohol...back to t he responsible side of things...i like to drink a glass of water every time I get a drink to pave myself and stay hydrated. This place will not give you a glass of water! I've never been to a bar that wouldn't give you water. They told me they only serve bottled water. And "well our tap water isn't filtered or anything." I told her "I don't care give me the tap water, I'm fine with the city water" response "well we have tap water, but they charge $3 for tap water." I don't understand why a kareoke bar that feels like a dive bar charges so much for drinks? I don't understand why people give them a break because it is a kareoke bar.....I just shake my head. It feels seedy and dive-y. Drinks are generally too expensive for what I am feeling that place appears to be. The Dj wants a tip to bump people from the list if you want yours first...because I really want to pay to either a) make a complete fool of myself ...or...b) emberass my friend who doesnt really want to do it. Granted the latter is probably more satisfying the whole tipping the DJ really irritates me. Though, a huge upside is their ability to organize and assist with kareoke themed parties in their private rooms. They do offer a nice selection of small to large size rooms for fun singing and in dancing. Back in the day there were very few places that offered kareoke...kareoke...like those famous scenes in movies with cliche drunk asians singing Michael Jackson. Booo. But seriously, with normal bars, grills and pubs offering kareoke days on slow nights like Tuesday - Thursday and sometimes on the weekends Spotlight just isnt a viable option any more. For some reason I've done a bunch of karaoke in the past few months, which is strange because I really dislike karaoke. But they were all places with private rooms which is a little different then the big open places where I tend to just make fun of people and feel bad for making fun. Kinda like watching the American Idol preshows. I've been to the more authentic Asian karaoke place in Austin that was cool cause it was cheap and BYOB but kinda gross and smelled like pee and what I imagine a "back room" at a porn shop would be like. Then I did Highball in Austin, which is way swankier but had props and tons of good songs, but drained the wallet. Then I found the perfect in-between with Spotlight. Mr. Lee the owner is hillarious. He is proud of his establishment and told me all about how he liked having a dress code to ensure a better quality of customers and try to keep it upscale. We had a private room that was SO nice, an actual stage and so much room to move around. The waitress was a sweetheart and we didn't have to wait long for drinks. The rates were reasonable and the song selections were good. I did venture out of our little cave every once in a while and the action on stage was so funny and crazy and the entire place was jumpin. If you're actually into karaoke and want to sing the whole time get a private room, if you like karaoke for all the craziness that usually ensues when a white guy sings "damn it feels good to be a gangsta" then this is definitely your place. read more

I was invited for a private party and had a blast. The place itself is nothing to be impressed with, but it is definitely a good Kareoke. I went on a Saturday night and the main floor was pretty packed. The private room for our party was small but fit us all very well (about 20 of us). There were munchies set up (small sandwices,fruit, desserts etc), and those were great too. We didnt have any technical difficulties (even after I "tried" to sing), which means their equipment is in very good condition and durable! I will try to go on a regular night and stay on the main floor so I can experience it a little better. But for now, If I am invited to another party, My Beyonce moves and I will be there! read more

First time visiting Houston and being an avid karaoke-goer, I decided to go to this spot. Firstly, apparently, because I didn't have a reservation, I had to pay a cover charge to get in. Secondly, I put my song in to a VERY RUDE DJ around 10 pm, and did not sing until 1:30 am. The drinks were not very strong, or tasty but a bit pricey - there is a 2 drink minimum to sing also. I heard that the sushi was good. The mikes and speakers seemed to be low quality and the set-up left a lot to be desired. I am not sure if I will be heading back to this location any time soon - which is a pity since it is within my area. read more

Spotlight...I used to be a regular here and I love the place but I just can never get over the fact that they charge as if you are in a club for drinks. Way to expensive and a bit ridiculous if you ask me. Now, I said I love the place and I did, so I suffered through countless nights here with an expensive tab until they redid the place after the hurricane. Now, If you don't reserve seating for a weekend night in advance, there is nowhere to sit. EVERYTHING IS RESERVED. To me, that's not very welcoming for people who like to pop in to sing some songs. The cover, again like it's a club, they charge a cover and then you get in and have nowhere to sit. That's a bit crazy!!! They used to cahrge you a $5 cover and you got a drink ticket. This made absolute sense but now, no drink ticket and a more than $5 cover?? Sad to say they've lost my business with their ridiculous antics now-days!! read more

I'm very annoyed with the service I received. Attended my girlfriend's bday party and was immediately irritated with the stench of mildew and uncleanliness when I walked in the door. Once I found our room the waitress asked what I wanted to drink, I asked for a cup of ice water and was given a cup of ice only!!! The waitress says " you can purchase a bottle of water for $3.00". Told her all I needed was a sip to take some meds , she walked away and totally ignored me. So here I am sitting waiting on the celebrant with a cup of ice!!! Very unprofessional. So *drumroll* ...I finally made it [in]to Spotlight! It could have been all of the anticipation from my prior failed attempts, but my experience was underwhelming at best. The place is kind of small and I am pretty sure I only got in because of the friend I had with me. We were also there super early. I don't know what all the fuss is about. The karaoke performers were decent but not as fun as at Mezzanine. The bar-staff are nothing special. The owner sang a song or two and that was cute. The people who work the door are also rude. Not that I expect bouncers to smile, but as an attractive young woman (I know how this sounds/reads but it had to be said! lol) I am way more used to admiring glances than the smirks and scowls I get at this place. Spotligh Karaoke makes it soooo fun and easy to get up on stage for those who are normally shy... The crowd and staff is amazingly friendly and very encouraging! The pros: 2 drink minimum, having food delivered, and a guaranteed great time! The cons: it closes at 2am and the place is a little dingy. This is an awesome place to also have a party. I will not be shutting up about Spotlight Karaoke for a loooong time! Authentic Asian Karaoke. The crowd is so eclectic, FUN and leavin' the hate at the door. People are singing along with the person on stage, clapping, dancing in the aisles. It's like a Pentecostal tent revival with booze...but no snakes! Even if you suck, very badly, you still get cheered on. The patrons are so ethically diverse that it could be a United Colors of Benetton ad. It's a beautiful thing! I heard this place has been around 30-ish years. The owner (an 80-something year-old WW2 vet) is such an unbelievably warm and friendly guy. (and thanks for the free shots!) He does an impeccable Frank Sinatra! Man, he's good! His wife and VERY sassy granddaughter help run the place. They start serving sushi at 10:30, that's when it gets packed. Also, the cocktails are really watered down...so stick with beer or wine...or shots. It's a pretty nice joint too...nice decor, cool lighting, sloppy dressers (baggy pants etc.) are turned away. Many guys were wearing jackets. Keep it classy, people. This place, alone, is a good reason to fly to Houston! Seriously. read more
