Sun Mountain Lodge - Kayaking Activity

Lovely lodge in Winthrop where you have access to some hiking trails and bike trails, pool and hot…read moretubs. The restaurant is pretty good, but make a reservation if you want to dine there as it gets pretty busy in the summer. The surroundings are beautiful and you can explore during the day then relax in a comfortable room at night. Staff was friendly. Note - North Cascades are not exactly close so you should have a car if you want to explore the mountains.

In all my travel experiences, fifty + years worth, I have never experienced such chaotic food…read moreservices as I experienced during my new years eve trip last month. The details are too long an involved to go into, but suffice it to say in a three night stay, the evening meals two of the three nights were 2 hour almost comical mis-adventures. After the last meal, capped off by the smell of a rotten cleaning rag left on the table behind us (reeking of rotten fish) my wife and I just lost it laughing at the complete absurdity of the whole situation. Oh, and by the way, the food ain't cheap. After the first night, I would have eaten outside the lodge, but that is impractical as the closest restaurants are in Winthrop which is mostly closed in the evening and a pretty tough drive down slick roads and back. To be fair, the new years eve celebratory meal (at $105 PP) was pretty good and not chaotic. (I am told the lodge owners were dining there that evening which may have affected the service) The lodge itself is nice, although our room, a fireplace room in the Gardner lodge was pretty worn and dated. In my mind, this place is nowhere worth what they charge and the difficulty of getting there. The upscale lodges in Leavenworth are for better,

If you're looking for a place that perfectly captures the spirit of the Old West after the gold…read morerush failed and everyone left town, this is it. The parking lot is a rodeo for compact cars only -- if you drive anything bigger than a Mini Cooper, good luck partner. The riverside 'sitting area' is less 'tranquil escape' and more 'Botanical Exhibit: Weeds of the Northwest.' A $20 Home Depot run could have fixed it, but apparently tumbleweed chic was the design choice. The scenic walkway is cleverly positioned right in front of your windows, so the choice is either: (a) enjoy your 'river view' or (b) star in a reality show called People Watching Me in My Pajamas. The walls are so thin you'll know exactly when your neighbor sneezes, flushes, or thinks deep thoughts about life. The western theme? Let's just say it's like someone googled "cowboy wood" and gave up halfway. The mix of cedar, pine, and random lumber scraps feels less John Wayne and more Home Depot clearance bin. And the bathroom? Oh, half of it is in the bedroom. Because nothing says romance like brushing your teeth while your partner is still in bed watching you. Five stars for location. Zero stars for everything else. Would only recommend if your idea of a Wild West vacation includes thin walls, awkward parking, and bathrooms that refuse to commit to a single room.

Update: Check your receipt after staying here. I just noticed we were charged twice for our stay,…read moreso I'm having to deal with the credit card company to have one of the charges removed. I'm glad my husband caught it when reviewing our statement, so make sure to check yours too. The room itself was quaint and fit the character of the western town. It was clean, the bed was comfortable, and the view over the creek was beautiful. The only odd design choice was the sink being located in the main part of the room rather than in the separate toilet/shower area, which made brushing teeth and washing up a little awkward. Unfortunately, we were rudely woken up at 9 am by someone aggressively trying to enter our room. I'm fairly certain it was a cleaning person, though check-out wasn't until 11 am, so I have no idea why they'd be trying to clean our room so early. When I looked through the peephole, I saw it was a small man wearing a cap, so I wasn't about to open the door to confront him. He continued trying to open the door for 2-3 minutes before finally giving up. An hour later, when we were ready to depart around 10 am, I went to the office to find out what all the ruckus was all about, but it was locked and completely unattended. We left feeling uneasy, and although the room and setting were nice, the unsettling experience means we probably wouldn't stay here again.

After our hike, we made our way to Mazama, stopping at the Mazama Store before heading over to the inn, at which point we realized how tiny and great Mazama really is! We arrived to the hotel around 2:00pm and I was happy to learn our room was ready for check in. A friendly gentleman handled the process and though he shared he doesn't usually work the front desk, you honestly wouldn't have known as check in was smooth, welcoming, and effortless. Our room was located on the second floor of the main building, and to our surprise, it was actually a loft style room which was a really fun bonus! The room also had a small balcony, a kitchenette with a mini fridge, Keurig, and microwave (I think) and even though the bathroom was on the smaller side, the shower was excellent... I love a good hot shower with great pressure. After dinner, we relaxed by dipping our feet into the hot tub before spending some time in the cozy common area upstairs which again felt warm and homey. The entire property was clean, quiet, and really well maintained. Overall, the price was reasonable, especially considering the area and the level of comfort. I had researched several lodging options of various tiers around both Mazama and Winthrop and I feel confident that I made the right choice. The Inn at Mazama is a gem for anyone wanting to unwind in nature without sacrificing comfort. I would absolutely 100% stay here again!

After several day hikes, the hot tub was a great addition. The staff was great. The rooms were great, there are these lovely common areas with comfortable seating and amenities, a fireplace really just great all around. Do not miss the Mazama store, there's a secret path between the Inn and the store. It has an amazing bakery.
