After our hike, we made our way to Mazama, stopping at the Mazama Store before heading over to the inn, at which point we realized how tiny and great Mazama really is! We arrived to the hotel around 2:00pm and I was happy to learn our room was ready for check in. A friendly gentleman handled the process and though he shared he doesn't usually work the front desk, you honestly wouldn't have known as check in was smooth, welcoming, and effortless. Our room was located on the second floor of the main building, and to our surprise, it was actually a loft style room which was a really fun bonus! The room also had a small balcony, a kitchenette with a mini fridge, Keurig, and microwave (I think) and even though the bathroom was on the smaller side, the shower was excellent... I love a good hot shower with great pressure. After dinner, we relaxed by dipping our feet into the hot tub before spending some time in the cozy common area upstairs which again felt warm and homey. The entire property was clean, quiet, and really well maintained. Overall, the price was reasonable, especially considering the area and the level of comfort. I had researched several lodging options of various tiers around both Mazama and Winthrop and I feel confident that I made the right choice. The Inn at Mazama is a gem for anyone wanting to unwind in nature without sacrificing comfort. I would absolutely 100% stay here again!

However, this definitely would not be a location I would stay again at. The Pros: The location is gorgeous, there is no doubt about that. The North Cascades is amazing and the Freestone Inn is wonderfully placed near several hikes. It honestly took our breath away coming up to the cabin. The price wasn't terrible for an inn near a national park during larch season as well. We paid about 500 dollars for two nights. The bed was very comfortable and the room (minus a few cobwebs) was for the most part clean. There is a restaurant walking distance from the inn as well. The Cons: The hospitality service is very lacking here. When I asked about room turnover, they said that if we want towels replaced and trash taken out, we would have to put it outside our room. Again, I was expecting no frills but this was a bit surprising. Even more surprising is that when we did receive a replacement of towels they were set on the bath in a giant stack, and not hung up. Also, there was a puddle of water in a tray in our fridge I assume was for the ice? It was definitely broken. Overall, it did the job, but have no interest in coming back.

I'm glad I didn't because the room wasn't clean from the previous guest. I also saw the reviews of bed bugs from other guests. I can't report having seen any myself. However, those reviews made me feel uneasy about staying here. It does not seem there is quality control for the cleaning staff. The only reason I stayed here is because it's the only place near Winthrop that doesn't require a two night minimum reservation.

We paid $417 for two weekend nights in October. Other notes / Possible Cons - * The sound bleed is so bad. We could fully hear the conversation, footsteps, and movie of the room next to us. So if you don't like that I would definitely recommend getting one of the separated cabins. * A lot of the appliances (TV, fireplace. Etc.) didn't work but it wasn't a huge issue because it wasn't too cold and you're in nature - why need a TV? * Breakfast is homemade and they say it's from 8 - 9:30 AM but really all the food is gone around 9. Again, not really an issue for us since we didn't really eat the breakfast. Good coffee though :)

Staff couldn't tell us how to walk into town or how long it would take us, just that it was a five minute drive (sad). There's an easy foot path and pedestrian bridge you can access just down the road through the Methow River Lodge & Cabins. It was maybe a ten minute walk to town, and a lovely one at that. We requested a quiet room and were placed upstairs all the way at the back, and we were pleased. Bed and pillows were comfortable. Bathtub had trouble draining, so we kept that short and sweet. No one to report that to next day upon checkout as you just leave your room keys in a bowl on the counter and that's that. No wifi, but our room had a dvd/vcr player, and there is an impressive selection of movies for guests to borrow. We went with a nostalgic Ewok Adventure on VHS, and let me tell you it was a solid choice. Breakfast downstairs included decent coffee, hot veggie quiche, english muffins with cream cheese, and blueberry pound cake. A nice touch, especially since there was nowhere in town open for us to get breakfast. I guess we'll have to come back to Winthrop over a weekend to experience the town at its fullest. I wouldn't mind staying at Chewuch Inn & Cabins again when I do.

Stehekin, Washington is a hidden, remote oasis, and I'm so grateful I had the chance to visit and…read morestay at the North Cascades Lodge at Stehekin earlier this month. I planned my trip to North Cascades National Park a bit later than usual and was nervous that lodging options would be limited. Luckily, with a bit of sleuthing, I discovered the lodge typically has a two night minimum but that there happened to be a single night available on the exact day I was planning to visit. One quick phone call later, I had a room at the North Cascades Lodge at Stehekin booked! Our ferry ride over was less than ideal (despite the stunning views) so the moment we arrived in Stehekin my entire mood shifted. The scenery somehow became even more breathtaking and the peaceful remoteness of the area was *exactly* what I had been craving. I had been looking at pictures of Stehekin in the days leading up to my trip, eagerly awaiting my own experience. Check in at the lodge was quick and easy due to its perfect location just steps from the ferry landing. Our room had a classic lodge feel (simple but cozy) with two beds (yahoo), a larger-than-expected bathroom, a small kitchenette (mini fridge and coffee maker), and a patio with two chairs. The bed was super comfortable, I took a great nap and had an excellent night of sleep as well. The patio was a wonderful spot to relax in the evening even though all rooms share that setup and it's a popular hangout in the evenings. The only minor drawback was the occasional passing car which slightly interrupted the otherwise serene lake views and peace and quiet. For dinner, we ate at the lodge's restaurant (The Landing) where I ordered a delicious sandwich with fries. It's counter service setup though staff brings your food to the table. The service was friendly and efficient. While the prices were on the higher side, it's understandable given the remoteness of the location and well worth it, in my opinion. On the topic of price, there is no free WiFi at the lodge, you have to pay $5 for a designated amount of WiFi (either data or 24 hours, whichever comes first). The red bus and blue bus are added costs as well and there are no bikes available for rent at the lodge. Even so, one of my favorite parts of staying at the lodge was the community feel, ESPECIALLY with so many PCT hikers passing through!!!! Some were staying overnight, others were recharging their phones, grabbing food, or just relaxing while waiting out the heat. I absolutely loved chatting with the thruhikers - they were so kind, so, so inspiring, and full of stories even though they just recently set out on their treks southbound to Mexico. I genuinely wish them the best on their incredible, life-changing journey #jealous. All in all, North Cascades Lodge at Stehekin is the perfect base for experiencing this magical corner of Washington. I can't wait to return and next time, I'll hope to stay even longer.

For example, we were sitting at the landing, waiting for the boat to take us back to Chelan, and we saw a deer wander by followed by bald eagle landing in a tree a few hundred feet away. That happened in the span of 10 minutes. Needless to say, if you've never been up this direction, it's well worth your trip! the lodge is literally one of the only businesses up here, and if you're not staying here, the main reason you would visit is to grab something from the small store, or to grab food from the restaurant. We tend to come here for lunch on the day that we are leaving, and it never disappoints. The burgers are good, the sandwiches are solid, and on our last trip, we found that the desserts are nice. Nothing fancy, but certainly a step up from Camping food for anyone that's coming off the PCT! They have plenty of beer and wine options. We found it was surprisingly nice to have a glass of a red blend on the deck overlooking lake Chelan! Again, a spot well worth checking out and one that has some solid option for your remote eating and drinking pleasure!

We stayed here from July 3-10 for my 30th birthday trip, and I genuinely can't imagine a better home base. In fact, I would go as far as saying Mazama Ranch House isn't just a place to sleep, it's a destination and retreat all on its own. When I was researching places to stay for a week of hiking in the North Cascades, I had a few priorities. I wanted to be close enough to the park that we weren't spending hours driving every day. I wanted peace and quiet, not crowds. Most importantly, I wanted to feel immersed in nature. Mazama Ranch House exceeded every expectation. We stayed in one of the double queen rooms in the Wings, and it was spotless, thoughtfully designed, and incredibly comfortable. The kitchenette had everything we needed, and the porches on both sides of the building were perfect for enjoying the sunrise with coffee and watching the sunset after long days on the trail. Every detail made it feel cozy without sacrificing functionality. One of the biggest surprises was how convenient the location was. We could walk to the Mazama Store for groceries and gas, as well as the nearby restaurant/brewery, yet the property still felt wonderfully secluded. The grounds are absolutely stunning. Wide-open green meadows and fields, ponderosa pines with singing birds, stunning landscaping, hammocks, picnic tables, peaceful walking paths, and a hot tub that quickly became our favorite post-hike tradition. After spending 8-10 hours exploring North Cascades each day, soaking in the hot tub while surrounded by nothing but nature was exactly what we needed before doing it all again the next morning. What really stood out was the atmosphere. Everyone staying there seemed to be seeking the same thing: peace, adventure, and an appreciation for the outdoors. It never felt crowded or noisy, just calm and restorative. Check-in couldn't have been easier. Our room number was waiting on a sticky note at the front entrance, and everything was ready when we arrived. During our week-long stay, housekeeping checked in to see if we needed fresh towels or anything else, and every interaction was warm and welcoming. We also had the chance to meet one of the owners, who took the time to chat with us and recommend several fantastic hikes around Mazama outside the national park. That personal touch made an already memorable stay even more special. This is one of those rare places that stays with you long after you leave. I can already picture myself returning for another hiking trip, a birthday getaway, an anniversary, or simply a quiet weekend to disconnect and recharge. Leaving was honestly the hardest part. I wasn't ready to trade the peaceful mornings, mountain air, and incredible tranquility for everyday life. If you're looking for luxury, you'll find it here in a different way. Not through extravagance, but through simplicity, thoughtful hospitality, breathtaking surroundings, and the kind of peace that's becoming harder and harder to find. Mazama Ranch House made my 30th birthday trip unforgettable, and without question, we'll be back.
