Lovely lodge in Winthrop where you have access to some hiking trails and bike trails, pool and hot tubs. The restaurant is pretty good, but make a reservation if you want to dine there as it gets pretty busy in the summer. The surroundings are beautiful and you can explore during the day then relax in a comfortable room at night. Staff was friendly. Note - North Cascades are not exactly close so you should have a car if you want to explore the mountains. read more

In all my travel experiences, fifty + years worth, I have never experienced such chaotic food services as I experienced during my new years eve trip last month. The details are too long an involved to go into, but suffice it to say in a three night stay, the evening meals two of the three nights were 2 hour almost comical mis-adventures. After the last meal, capped off by the smell of a rotten cleaning rag left on the table behind us (reeking of rotten fish) my wife and I just lost it laughing at the complete absurdity of the whole situation. Oh, and by the way, the food ain't cheap. After the first night, I would have eaten outside the lodge, but that is impractical as the closest restaurants are in Winthrop which is mostly closed in the evening and a pretty tough drive down slick roads and back. To be fair, the new years eve celebratory meal (at $105 PP) was pretty good and not chaotic. (I am told the lodge owners were dining there that evening which may have affected the service) The lodge itself is nice, although our room, a fireplace room in the Gardner lodge was pretty worn and dated. Have not been to SML for a couple years, Sadly, had Mothers Day dinner tonight at Sun Mountain Lodge, stick a fork in the place it's over... Horrible service, what happened to the good food, Caesar used to be great, now Costco dressing, 50 minutes after we sat down all the food came at once (both salads too) must have sat under warming lights for 15 minutes, when I asked the waiter to remove the 15.00 glass of wine from my bill that I never received he looked confused, then asked "how was the dinner" never noticing 1/2 the meals still sitting on our plates. The Sun Mountain Lodge was the undisputed "grand-dame" lodging in the Methow Valley.....until now. We found the lodge tired, dated and in disrepair. Our room, a large king with fireplace and view was dirty on arrival. The wall had some kind of dirty smear, the curtain ring was torn, it smelled like burning dust on arrival. The HVAC wasn't working correctly, we set the temperature to 70, it never got above 64. It would cycle on for for ten seconds, stop and then back on and then off.........all night long. The following morning we checked out and lost another $300+ for an unused day. We just couldn't handle it. There is no bell staff for bags, it's a do it yourself operation. The hall was filthy. Perhaps the new owner will bring it back to the old standard, but until then - Avoid staying at the Sun Mountain Lodge. read more

Pros: Location- beautiful views you won't see anywhere else, lots of outside activities to do on the grounds- hiking, horseback riding etc The resturant- Some reviewers were not impressed with the food. My vegan husband had some amazing dishes that were actually on the menu-we didn't have to specially request these items. We were able to eat outside on the patio in the bar area, which was absolutely lovely. We had the vegan flatbread, the chicken, the vegan cabbage entrée, basque cheesecake, and vegan chocolate sorbet. All very impressive for the price point considering where the resort is located. Staff-To all future guests-you're staying at a resort in the middle of nowhere. The staff is super chill. We are thankful that a place like this even exists out here. Where else could we stay around the area that is as nice ? The views, location and amenities make up for any sort of lack of customer service people may think they are getting. On a Friday night, there was only one front desk person, a couple of servers, a bartender and someone that seemed like maintenance person. Maria, the front desk personnel, and Roy our bartender were amazing. Cons- Although the resort has its charm, it was not entirely what I expected based on the vibe/photos on the website. The room we stayed in, a Mountain View King for $350 a night, was definitely outdated- it gave 90s vibes and the rooms need a refresh. The room and bathroom was super big and the balcony view was lovely, but the actual balcony needs to be refinished or replaced. They are currently doing construction on one of the lower levels of the hotel, the spa area I believe, so hopefully the rooms will be next. Sun Mountain Lodge is a beautiful destination that offers many outdoor activities and amenities. There is a beautiful cross country trail that leaves from the hotel and while we just walked it this trip, it appeared that we could rent gear for skiing and snowshoeing from the hotel. The rooms were comfortable and beautifully decorated, they have Nespresso coffee machines and every room that make a perfect cup of coffee. All of the staff at the hotel were very friendly and helpful and we felt very well taken care of. read more

Had a lovely wedding event here. The hotel is amazing (but there was smoke - not within their control!). The room we had was perfect. My recommendation though relates to handicap accessibility (none of the doors open easily and is hard for anyone with limited mobility/strength). Also, the workout room lacked any weights less than 20 lbs dumb bells and did not have any mats for floor exercises, so bring your own! Good service and nice staff! read more

Wonderful rooms, and pretty scenery. I didn't miss the absence of a TV and I loved the quiet. This facility has great potential, but for this price I wasn't expecting poor service. Reception was only staffed by one person who was overwhelmed by two lines of people trying to check in. The directions to our building/rooms was poor. I wouldn't have commented on this since any place can have an "off" day, but in general the service was not welcoming and even somewhat sullen from reception to the restaurant. A friend had recommended this for our stay and they had a good experience in a prior season. It's tough to complain about this place, given the views, the privacy, and the outdoor possibilities in winter or summer. Our suite was clean and pretty well equipped. Staff brought us more pillows promptly, since as we were a family of three we used the pullout. Also, Brett at the ski shop was really helpful with our skiing and hiking plans. Finally, we had good-to-excellent food in the Dining Room and the bar. The pullout sofa, unfortunately, was an instrument of torture. After two hours, I made it back into a couch and slept on that. It wasn't terrible, it just wasn't great for what we were paying. After four nights I was ready for a bed. Also, the room could use a microwave, especially since the restaurant and bar are expensive. Winthrop's few restaurants are a bit of a drive, and it can be tough to get a decent bite there, as restaurant hours aren't robust. And sometimes you just want to eat in and play a game or read. All told, though, this place is a quiet gem that we find ourselves coming back to. The winter solitude can't be beat. read more

We stayed at the Sun Mountain Lodge during the August 2023 North Cascade National Park fires (8/15-8/17). It was a little sad because we couldn't enjoy the national park or hike any of the local trails because of the smoke. We also had a beautiful porch overlooking the back and we didn't use it much. In all honesty, I'm very sensitive to smoke and air quality so it also could have been a bigger problem for me than others. That said, this place is beautiful and I think it would be an incredible place to stay if the fires weren't happening. This hotel also has excellent customer service. When we first checked in, our room was incredibly hot and smelled like incense. We couldn't open the windows because it was too Smokey outside so we called the front desk and they moved us immediately, which was very kind and appreciated. The staff at the main dining room were also very kind. We didn't use any of the facilities (horse back riding, pool, etc) but they looked super fun and cute! read more

We didn't stay here based on negative reviews but we went up to tour it and see for our next trip. The setting is amazing! The views, stunning. We were there 7pm on a Saturday night and it was very quiet. Not many people in restaurant or bar area. The 2 pools looked clean. The pickleball area was being used and seemed great. When in the lobby there was a visible film of dust on everything. The grand piano had so much dust on it. I'm not sure why the lobby attendant couldn't see it and give it a quick wipe. Other areas seemed a tad unkept as well. It's a massive property but needs a bit more attention. I still think I'd roll the dice and stay there next time around. read more

We hadn't been to Sun Mountain Lodge for 25 years, so my past memory is hazy but it certainly seems to have lost its luster upon our return. We were in the area and decided to drop in for a drink on the deck. This was the day of the Stud Horse fire so the view was fairly interesting. I can't imaging the cost to maintain a place like this; so much wood, so much weather. So the deck was showing it's age. Not a problem. The problem was when we got the check it said $83.09 for 1 cocktail, 1 wine and one long-awaited 4 piece chicken wings - well-aged, I mean dry. Not even close to crispy. I was in the mode of things-are-expensive , even more so given the location so just pay the check. But my wife said no way and got the bill revised to a more representative number of $56.67 (it had been a "typo" on the part of the overworked but very pleasant hostess). I'm sure that our waiting another 25 years to return will not represent a loss to SML and we wish them all the best in these trying times. read more

Celebrated my birthday and our 10th anniversary this past weekend at the lodge. We had never been and heard great things about it. The view and the grounds were so beautiful. Unfortunately, the ac didn't work in our room which made it a little miserable for sleeping. We had maintenance come check it the second night we were there and they said it should be fixed. Unfortunately, it was not and it was just as hot the second night. Luckily they gave us a small fan so that helped a little. We spent a little time at the small pool and there were so many bugs floating around and it looked like it hadn't been cleaned in quite some time. I felt for the staff, they all looked pretty exhausted and stretched pretty thin. I'd have to imagine this place was stunning and all around incredible in the past but sadly that was not our experience. I hope they find the staff and the changes they need to be 5 stars again. read more

I mean the menu is pretty simple, they only have 3 tables to serve...The service is terrible. My soup came COLD... not warm. Cold. The BLT and fries took over an HOUR?? That's just... impossible. Then they came COLD and weren't good at all and cost over $20? We walked away from our table to take care of the child and they let another couple take it... the server said "one more minute" and 20 minutes later the food finally arrived. Nothing for the kids to do. Kids menu has no pictures. $12 for Kraft Mac n cheese seems a bit extreme and then it's not Kraft! (It's way worse... nothing was even worth taking with us.) read more

The lodge is lovely--my favorite destination getaway in the state. Over the years, I've only had good experiences there. However, this Saturday evening, I drove up for a meal in the bar and was deeply disappointed. I've never had such lousy food or service. The menu is very sparse. We ordered the tacos: crusty tortillas and exceedingly dry carne asada, more like jerky than fresh beef. The onion rings were okay--no complaints--but at $15, they were a disappointment. The worst part was feeling like we should apologize to the bartender for having dropped in. The room was nearly empty at 7 pm on a Saturday. Maybe he wanted to go home, and we prolonged his agony. Who knows. We've enjoyed meals in the bar over the years, with its incredible views and decent food for the price. We drove 30 minutes out of our way, both ways, for the experience and would never do it again. We will try the restaurant again when we're looking for fine dining, hoping they, too, haven't dropped off so significantly. It's sad to see one of the great destinations in America--one in which I'm willing to spend upwards of $400 for a room--serve food that's beyond uninspired; it's barely edible, with service that makes you feel so unwelcome. I don't need to be doted on; just don't make me feel like you'd be way happier if we stayed away. Until things change, we will. read more

The suite and stay was very nice and the employees terrific. A typical older lodge and rooms sufficed quite well! Gorgeous views! We asked for a microwave in the room and it was brought to the room before we arrived there which was nice, but it had not been cleaned and it had crumbs from the previous person who use the microwave. Also, we liked everything at the lodge and our suite very much but we cannot recommend the restaurant, sadly. The food was just not good ... we tried it for lunch & gave the dinner menu a try too..... not good meals. Service was fine. We stayed for the weekend clinic for skate snd classic skiing. This was perfect & I'm happy we stayed here for this. Bret in the ski equipment area was perfect!!! I later found out he's owned the store in the lodge it for over 30 years .... such a helpful kind guy! I loved the game room - fun! We also loved the warm fireplace but they only lit 1 of 3 our trip there -- would have been nice if they would've let all three so that people had options to sit near the fire so little little bit more. read more

Wow, Sun Mountain Lodge - what a scam! This place boasts about all the activities and amenities they have to offer but good luck finding them and don't bother asking anyone that works there, they don't know anything. 1. Completely overpriced - rooms are bare and don't have much to offer other than maybe an updated bathroom. The product doesn't match the price, let's just say that. 2. "Resort Fee" - for what? A bug infested pool with no service or the front desk who didn't know where any hiking trails were? We asked the front desk if they could assist us with accessing a hiking trail (btw these were printed at the front desk) and they replied with "I don't know". So we asked if they had someone they could call and ask and they answered "No, I can't call someone." 3. Food - the food itself wasn't bad but you're on their time. Plan for a 2-hour minimum brunch and don't ask for espresso because they don't serve it in the restaurant, and you better walk over and get it yourself from the gift shop. Otherwise they have chai tea... and it has to be iced... To sum it all up, the reservation manager LeAnne will make up anything to be back hiding in her room behind the desk. She's clearly in the wrong business and we caught her in several lies. After getting our receipt for the stay, she still overcharged our credit card and now we can't get ahold of them. Safe to say this place is shady and overrated. We were there with several other groups who had a similar bizarre and poor experience. Do yourself a favor and stay anywhere else in Winthrop! read more

Much better experience this time around. We appreciated how much work the staff had to do as a result of the smoke damage from the summer fires. Everything looked clean and fresh!! The bed was very comfy, the chairs/ couch as well. The classical music was very relaxing, especially from the tub. We loved watching the deer and wild turkeys from our balcony. There is evidence of the fires on the trails, but definitely not as bad as we expected. The crew did a fantastic job!! We definitely appreciate your hard work. A very relaxing time indeed! Another great stay! Even mid-COVID they made it work and kept it safe. We enjoyed the Thanksgiving dinner and overnight package. It would've been nice to dine in the dinning room and experience the breathtaking view but the food was just as enjoyable in our beautiful room We were glad to see the gift shop was open so we could do a little early Christmas shopping and with masks we could enjoy the grand fireplace in the lobby Leanna at the front desk was more then helpful when we checked in a bit early due to our Thanksgiving dinner reservations. Professional, kind and knowledgeable. If I had to give one suggestion to Sun Mountain Management it would be to please update their coffee makers in their rooms to Kuerigs. Booked the Patterson Lake Cabins for our family. The room was perfect, the lake serene and quiet. Decided to head to the main lodge to eat and go for a swim. The food was bland, unexceptional and over priced. This could be rationalized by the amazing views though. We decided not eat there anymore and, instead, head to Winthrop for food. The pool was fantastic- warm water, great sunlight and views as well. We went on a horseback ride that was fun. Great staff there. We stayed 2 nights and all agreed that it was a ho hum experience. Nothing real stood out or screamed "I need to come back again" The real issues began when we received our bill. Our deposit of over $500 was never applied to the final bill. We were overcharged by $150 for a pet deposit. A fraudulent charge for a second meal appeared that never occurred. Something smells rotten in Denmark We've been in contact with the front desk and accounting for over a month now and the charges have still not been resolved/reversed . Unfortunately we've had to open a dispute with our credit card company because Sun Mountain Lodge cannot solve and seems disinclined to even contact us regarding these major issues. Emails that have remained unanswered. Repeated run arounds with the front desk and no communication with the accounting dept other than unreturned voice mails left with them. Great hotel compared to other options in the area, but some inconsistent and inconsiderate service. My husband and I visited last fall, to celebrate our anniversary. We arrived after dark, after a snow storm. The heavyset blonde woman with a bandana at the front desk was incredibly short with us, and made it really unclear where our room was located. When we asked questions about scheduling breakfast, because it would be easy for her to make a reservation for us right then and there, she insisted we call ourselves, here's the number. Not helpful. There was no one behind us waiting and no one on hold. No reason to rush. Then we got lost looking for our room - it wasn't clear if our room was in this (same) building, behind us, or in this (next) building, behind us. She watched as a lugged my bad back and forth across the lobby trying to find my room. When we came back to ask for clarification, she was incredibly short with us, implying we must be idiots for not knowing where to go. Quick remember that this was our first time here, and it was dark and snowing. Had our initial greeting been better we would have had a better overall experience. All of that said, the restaurant staff was very kind, and we tipped extra. Food was pretty good, though my friend and I both got food poisoning from the cod (note to self: never order fish from a landlocked place!). Hope to come back and have a better experience. read more

Came to Sun Mountain Lodge for a getaway girls weekend without the SOs or kids, and we were not disappointed. Booking directly through the hotel website was straightforward and easy, as was check-in. Our valley view rooms had spectacular views of the Methow Valley--it was great fun to ceremoniously open the blinds each morning of our stay and take it in. The rooms had everything we needed: 2 queen beds, a small seating area, coffee maker, and unexpectedly a small fridge, which was handy for drinks and the few ski snacks we had brought. No tv so be prepared to go without. We all slept amazingly well every night, despite being adjacent to the elevator. The marble bathroom was pretty and larger than expected for the room. We Nordic skied during the day, and then hot-tubbed and ate our hearts out in the evening and ended the night with ping pong in the rec room. Wholesome, no? The whole experience was fantastic, including the spa where we enjoyed a facial and massage as well as the very accommodating staff at the ski shop who waxed our skis, provided rentals, and gave us helpful tips on where to go per conditions. [They also provide Nordic lessons. My friends were stuck with me for instructor.] However, I want to give the biggest shoutout to the kitchen staff at the lodge. Sun Mountain is a 20-30 minute drive from Winthrop or Mazama, so hotel guests are disincentivized to eat elsewhere, but that does not mean the bar or dining room disappoint. We ate all of our dinners and most breakfasts at the hotel, and left extremely satisfied each time. Service was tremendous at every visit, from the hostesses to the servers and bartenders. The bar has a more casual menu and does not require reservations. If you eat meat, you gotta try the steak salad, it was a huge hit in our group. The dining room is currently open for breakfast (buffet only on weekends) and dinner by reservation only, I suspect because of pandemic staffing shortages. The restaurant was not ever full but it did book up quickly. Our dining room dinner was memorably delicious [and very romantic if you're bringing your sweetie]. The hotel's pastry chef is bomb! Whether you are staying at the hotel or elsewhere in the Methow, do make the trip up to have a meal in the dining room. We made reservations in their dining room to celebrate our anniversary with a nice meal and some fine wine. Instead, we found ourselves swatting flies throughout the meal. I don't mean a few flies, there were continuous flies landing in, on and around our food. I understand that no restaurant is immune to occasional problems like this, but clearly the management was aware of the problem and is unable, or unwilling to address it. One star - not because of the accommodations or what I'm sure is the lovely, romantic atmosphere advertised on the website. I wouldn't know. I didn't get to stay here. There was a misunderstanding regarding the pet policy. Expedia lists the property as 'pet friendly'. But, unlike other hotels with a pet policy, Sun Valley resorts can be bothered to list whether individual rooms allow pets or not. That being said, there is apparently some caveat listed somewhere that pets are allowed only in cabins. And, I certainly understand that the hotel has a policy. It's just not particularly professional in 2022 for a hotel to not be able to communicate effectively and clearly on a website like Expedia. And I am certainly not making the case that I am not blameless for the misunderstanding. Not at all. But, the person I spoke to on the phone was breathtakingly unprofessional. I called to see if we could check in early. And, because this is not my first rodeo, I asked to confirm that it would be a pet-friendly room. The response was "Uh, nooooooo" in a tell-it-to-the-hand eye-rolling make-sure-the-client-knows-how-stupid-they-are-for-asking tone of voice that would make a drag queen proud. I felt like I was watching an episode of Daria or talking to a bubble gum chewing teenager who hasn't learned that upspeak only makes people take you less seriously. She started to lecture me about what's on the website. I asked her what she suggested we do and, again, with perfect snotty aplomb, she says "I have no idea". In case the clue phone doesn't ring loudly enough, the correct response would have been "Gee, sir, I'm really sorry this happened. We unfortunately cannot accommodate you, but there are numerous places in town that do accept pets." Or even .... "Let me check to see if we have any cabins available". I hung up on her. I'm glad that I got trip insurance since it's too late to cancel. Maybe the hotel could possibly have someone with less of a Gen-X sneer to her voice answering the phone. Now trying to book time has been at the very least been difficult. Whomever manages reservations is rude and extremely discourteous. I booked Sun Mountain Lodge at the last minute and really did not know what to expect. Boy were we pleasantly surprised. This whole property has a very cozy/relaxed vibe. The property is absolutely gorgeous. The lodge itself has tons of nooks & crannies to hang out and enjoy. Roaring fire places with a view, a game room, a reading room, a game room for watching sports, etc. I upgraded our room because the pricing during shoulder season was very reasonable-- but it was a waste because we ended up spending all of our time here enjoying the wonderful public areas. The room itself was just ok-- very clean but definitely would benefit from some updates. We were mostly in the area to enjoy a scenic drive & some hiking and did not plan to spend a lot of time at the resort but we're already thinking of coming back to enjoy all the amenities offered here at a future date. I can see this being a great place to just hang out and enjoy nature & some pampering for a few days. Some tips: - On our visit in Nov 2019 they have 2 tesla 48 amp chargers & another EV charger. We saw one other EV while there so charging was not a problem. - The resort is located about 10 miles past Winthrop and in the middle of no-where. Which has it's pluses and minuses. read more

First, the view: stunning. The grounds: country western with excellent landscaping. Amenities: a few pools and hot tubs, a nice gym, bike riding, hiking, horseback, running trails -- you could never leave the place and be happy since it's fully contained. The beds are great, you'll sleep like a baby because of the silence of the grounds. A serenity only broken by the occasional kid in tantrum mode (warning: yelling kids will dominate the main pool in summer). The restaurant is delicious with an amazing view...not cheap but worth it (especially since the dining options in Winthrop will disappoint). I always return to the Sun Mountain lodge with that "Ahhhh" feeling you have when you sink into a comfortable, favorite chair, or a hot bathtub - that feeling of "Here's where I want to be!" I write at the end of January, with covid procedures in full force, so the restaurant, bar, pools are closed and things aren't quite as they'd be in normal times. But dinner last night - a takeaway - was excellent (mac & cheese from heaven), the rooms remain the same wonderful hideaways they always are, and it has been a wonderful, deeply restful three nights surrounded by deep snow and silence.. The Lodge is one of the two places I go to feel recovered, fresh, and ready to resume. The other is an Atlantic crossing on the Queen Mary 2, which gives an idea how much I love this place! read more

I have travelled a lot, and I have to say this lodge has to be one of my MOST Favorite ones yet! It breaks my heart to see some negative reviews on yelp!!! Trust me, I have travelled cross continents and I have stayed at some of the most finest resorts, this one ranks in my most favorite places to stay and I can't wait to go back!!! Each and every person I interacted with was kind and friendly! First of, special thanks to Jim for making the booking process so seamless and easy! You were professional, kind and efficient! Your guidance helped us book the most perfect room with a hot tub and spectacular Mountain Views! Second my two favorite people from the visit! The brothers that served us-- Anthony and Andy! Anthony has the kindest smile and was our server for dinner! We loved everything he recommended for us to eat on the dinner menu! Next morning we were served by his brother Andy who exceeded our expectations in terms of his friendliness and service! He went above and beyond to make our meal special! He also served my service puppy water :) I told him, I will be back not only becoz I loved the hotel but becoz I appreciated every person there at the restaurant! Jesse the host came to chat with us and gave love to our pup! There was another lady there that came too but I am horrible at names and so forgive me for forgetting all the cool people that helped make our stay spectacular! I'm over the moon! If I misspelt names or forgot anyone I apologize! This place is amazing! Good job to management for training people to do such a fine job! Although, kindness cannot to trained, the fact that the people that work there are so nice is a testament of the leadership keeping them happy! Booked straight through AAA, received additional charges once checked out when our receipt said fully paid. Also listed that cabins had wifi and they did not, nor cell reception! Ended up paying more through AAA than the cost booking directly on their site. Booked breakfast only to find that the restaurant was closed. $54 for two burritos at the cafe LOL. Very misleading. read more
