My wife and I visited this restaurant in Historic McKinney, TX this evening for the first time. We're visiting McKinney this week from Colorado. The restaurant was conveniently located, had plenty of free parking nearby, interestingly decorated inside and out, had outdoor seating, plenty of indoor seating, we were greeted upon entering, seated right away, had a great server who was patient, helpful, and efficient, the menu has many great selections, the meatloaf meal was to DIE for! and was very affordable, and the dining room was clean. read more

I wish I could give this place zero stars. Wow. Worst food I've ever eaten. My bacon was burnt to a crisp. The potatoes were also burnt to a crisp. The only thing on my plate that tasted good was my egg. I ordered a side a ham (it's a piece of deli meat). That was dipped in grease. Not even the pancake was good!! Complete waste of money. Save your money. Go elsewhere! read more

Service was great but the food was extremely underwhelming. Between the three of us we got french toast, a breakfast sandwich and chicken and waffles. The chicken was somewhat decent but the waffles and french toast were extremely bland. These should be easy items to cook correctly especially for restaurant that is known for their breakfast. The breakfast sandwich was average at best. Between the three of us we couldn't remember the last time we had such bland breakfast items. Even McDonalds would have been tastier. Additionally, as others mentioned, the plates and coffee mugs are flimsy plastic. Time to invest in some decent dishware. Definitely a disappointment and will not return. read more

We came on a busy weekend and we were given an option to go to the next door bar restaurant that serves exactly same kind of food. I believe it's their sister restaurant. As much as we want to feel the ambiance of this popular spot, we accepted the advice to satisfy our hungry tummy. Brunch options are quite many. Food is good. Service is great. The place is cool. Our first day in McKinney downtown is impressively liked. read more

I thought I would provide an update to the ownership since I never heard back. Please review the pictures I've attached for what I consider a MUCH better BLT on steroids (center cut bacon on a croissant with mashed avocado, provolone, tomatoes and shredded lettuce with a dill pickle spear. I don't even know where to begin. Recently my wife and I moved back to Texas and we were looking for some breakfast, where we could sit outside, and also pet friendly, since we had our little dog with us... The waitress was very nice, and friendly. And then it was all downhill from there... I ordered the chicken and waffles with cheese grits, and orange juice. The waffles were tasteless and dry, no flavor at all. The chicken was very under seasoned and overcooked. And the star of the show was the watery grits!! If I wanted Grit Soup, I would have asked for it... We tried to enjoy this horrible experience, but it was much worse because, of the lady who was on her cell phone,having a meeting with her colleagues and being loud and obnoxious... Stick a Fork in me, cause I will not be returning back to Spoons read more

I eat out at restaurants quite frequently, and I have a service industry background as well. When I say Sabrina is the best server in McKinney, it's been thoroughly vetted The food is always consistently good, no matter what my family orders, but more importantly it's the staff that keeps us coming back. Sabrina is always friendly, kind, patient with my 3 kids, and never hesitates to make a requested modification. This place gets BUSY on weekends when we come, but the team is always hustling to be efficient and provide quick service. read more

While shopping in McKinney Texas stopped for lunch. Love to try new places so Spoons Cafe it was We shared meatloaf sandwich with a side of chili and an order of loaded fries. Meatloaf sandwich came out on two soft cold toasted (?) sourdough bread with nothing on it not cut in half was suppose to come with barbecue sauce but did not meatloaf was dry sauce would have helped. The side of chili came with onions and cheese which gave it some flavor. Since we had the chili it worked good to moisten up the meatloaf and smothered the fries. Overall food was good not great. Service was good not great. Very busy so service not attentive not good social distancing. Not bad food just not good. read more

Met a friend here to celebrate our birthdays, hers was the Monday before and mine the following Monday. We both had the Ruben sandwich, I had gluten free bread and sweet potato fries and she had the Rye bread with green beans. We both had iced tea. The food was great! Plenty of corned beef and kraut in the sandwich, sweet potato fries were thin and crispy and her green beans looked fresh, not frozen or canned. She said they were good. The service was great and they let us sit and visit long after they stopped taking new customers. read more

We've been coming here for nearly 20 years; there's a reason... we loved it! We've brought so many people during that time. I'm REALLY sad to say that the last few times it has fallen off! The coconut cream pie has (in the past) been the best I've ever had! Last time it was kind of congested and dense, instead of creamy and fluffy. They upcharge for French fries as a side... but we got these hard flat chip things that are called "fries" now. They server (who has been here for years) didn't bother to write down our order and then forgot THREE things! They've added a credit card fee; which isn't great but understandable due to the pandemic. I'm sure there is less foot traffic and they need to make up the difference. I will say the chili is still great and the staff is always friendly. But that it is simply SAD, SAD, SAD to see this once wonderful place fall off! I honestly don't know that we will be back. read more

Went here before a fair day with my girlfriends on a Wednesday. Nice crowd for a weekday morning. Cozy. Nice to see vegetarian options. My food was just okay, nothing spectacular. Could've used a little seasoning. Service was, just okay - nothing spectacular. I had a pineapple mimosa, it was okay. I may come back, I may not. Eh, we'll see. Nothing really stood out. I think I'd probably choose sugarbacon, or few others in the area before choosing this one again, but we'll see. read more

Party of 15. I called a few days before to see if they could accommodate us. They said they would put us on the list that morning. I confirmed that we were still coming the day before and they texted the morning of to confirm as well. Got there on time, we were all immediately seated - 2 large booths and one high top, which was perfect. Servers were very friendly, got us drinks and took our orders quickly. Good assortment of breakfast choices in menu. Only one minor error when food came. Quickly fixed. Servers checked on us frequently. VERY pleased with how it all worked out. Total bill for 15 not including tip was @$250. read more

We stopped in here today for lunch and it was real tasty. I had the mingas and the Hubby had the blue cheese burger. Thanks for a good lunch, we will be back. My only complaint would be the parking in this area is hit or miss. It was pretty busy today, but we got lucky and caught someone leaving not too far away. read more

Doesn't look like much from the outside, the signage really needs to improve because you can't tell what it is from the sidewalk unless you are standing directly in front of the door. I wasn't that impressed with the service or the food. I expect the best from restaurants located in McKinney Square; Spoons doesn't cut it. It's just okay. Not terrible, just okay compared to other establishments in the vicinity. I was visiting from out of state on this day, but as I lived in DFW for nearly 20 years and always loved McKinney Square I was disappointed that several restaurants I knew and loved were now gone. As it was late in the evening, I picked the first one that I passed by on the street to meet a friend for dinner which happened to be Spoons. We both ordered meatloaf dinners. I love meatloaf if it's prepared with loving care. This one was edible, it's the side items that were disappointing, mashed potatoes and green beans. Bland and tasteless. Texas food has flavor, these did not. Can't say it's a place that I would want to visit again. At least our server was polite and gracious. She gave the place the stars I chose. read more

Two weeks ago I went to Spoons with friends for a long awaited luncheon together. I ordered the King Ranch Casserole and unfortunately my front tooth found a bone while eating. This took a significant chip out of my front tooth and the Manager on shift immediately came to our table and gave me General Managers contact info. I contacted GM the next morning and was told later that day that the Owner told her to tell me that their Insurance Company would be contacting me. I have YET to receive a call from the insurance company or any further communication from the GM. IF you want to eat here... Stick with the soup or salad and save your teeth! It seems they only care about getting customers in but not making sure the food is safe to eat OR the well-being of a customer that gets injured while dining there. read more

I'm not sure why this place has such great reviews. Walked in and the host sat us by throwing our menus on the table as he walked away to go loudly gossip. After waiting 10 minutes (we were the ONLY people seated inside and all the servers were sitting together towards the back of the restaurant) we finally were addressed by a waiter. We ordered an appetizer and two entrees. Each plate was brought out and tossed onto our table without a single word being said to us. While waiting for our food 2 servers were sitting at the front host stand (directly next to our table) and talking LOUDLY, and were taking selfies and catching us in the back of each of them, which was not nearly as rude as when they both stood up to roll up towels and start hitting each other with them LITERALLY 2 feet from our table. Definitely the worst costumer service we've ever experienced, and the food was horribly inedible, and also the grilled chicken portion is humorously minuscule (as pictured). Definitely not worth the $47 we spent. I would not recommend this place to anyone, at least until they teach their employees decent customer service. read more

We chose to eat here since our favorite place downtown (Hugs) was closed. My wife and i shared the club sandwich on sourdough with a side of potato salad and our daughter got the #1 breakfast for kids. The sandwich was okay, nothing special. The potato salad to me was too sweet. I am not sure if its homemade but tasted like it came from Sam's or Sysco. My daughter liked the pancakes but they needed the syrup since they had little to no flavor. She wasn't a fan of the scrambled eggs. We gave it a go but i dont believe we will revisit. read more

Spoons!!! This place is super cute and has amazing customer service! Their coffee menu has something for everyone and the names of their lattes are so cool. I went basic with a their honey latte and was really good. Oat milk isn't on their menu but they do have it, so get it with oat milk! Being vegan, sometimes these little restaurants like this are hard to go into because they're menus are all meat, biscuits and gravy and eggs on and with everything. Well this place does have a vegetarian option that was made easy to customize. Their veggie tacos (not on their breakfast menu, but you can order them anytime) were delicious! I omitted the feta and ordered two sides of cottage potatoes so I could put some in my tacos as well as extra to have on the side with some ketchup. The tacos come with salsa which made them perfect! read more

Update 7/12/17: Went for lunch. Asked for my kid's chicken tenders to be grilled instead of fried. Got the bill that charged me 4.95 for a chicken breast and 3.95 for fries instead of 4.95 for a kids meal. Also, the kids meal said drinks included, but that wasn't what my bill said. Tried to get our waitress to fix it, but after waiting 10 min just paid and left. Won't be back. Great experience. We weren't planning on eating here, but we're at a loss after the chef at Square Sushi was out. My kids loved the idea of breakfast for dinner, so we explored the square and found this gem. It was packed and crowded and a little loud, but had a great local vibe to it. The kids enjoyed their pancakes, eggs and bacon and I had the Big Tex, which is a pimento cheese, bacon and jalapeños in a panini. It was heaven! Highly recommend! read more

This was our first and last time at this establishment. Our waitress set a glass of Sprite in front of my 4 year old, who promptly knocked it over, while our waitress scampered away. She didn't come back. Two other servers came over and mopped up the mess. We were a party of six--4 adults and two kids. The food was nothing special, and each order (except mine, I only ordered a wrap) arrived missing a side dish. My nephew never received his Spanish rice, my Mom's meal was cold, and my niece received a dish she did not order. Only two of us received drink refills, and we ended up being disappointed that we had waited 25 minutes in 98 degree weather for this mediocre food and poor service. Save yourself the headache and go to Snug on the Square or Hugs Cafe. read more

Old school, hometown good comfort food. We had The Caribbean Salad and a BLTA with fried pickles. I loved the grilled sourdough bread, and they have patio seating. Hip eating spot! Sunday, when we were there, they had breakfast buffet past noon. We ordered off the vast menu, and enjoyed our lunch. I had BLTA (BLT, Avocado) and it was vert good. I remember the fried pickles the most! They were busy but timely. Although we didn't have pie, they looked wonderful! The only thing that kept from being a five star rating was the heavy greasy smell some diners have. read more

History

Established in 2003.

In late summer of 2003 Spoons Cafe opened with the idea of having a great breakfast/lunch place in downtown McKinney serving breakfast all day, fresh salads, soup and sandwiches with homemade baked goods. In 2007 Spoons relocated and restored a 1920's building on the corner of the square in Historic Downtown McKinney. In March of 2009 Spoons Garage opened, in what actually was an garage in the 1920's, directly behind the cafe adding a full coffee bar, overflow seating and private party rooms.

While waiting for our table, the manager or possible owner was telling single-party guests there was a 30-minute wait, while parties of three or more were being quoted only 10 minutes. An older woman standing there heard him tell the group in front of her 10 minutes right before he told her 30. The more I thought about it afterward, the more disappointed I was that I didn't speak up in the moment. Treating guests differently based solely on party size is unacceptable and left a very bad impression.
