I have heard great things so I stopped by Friday around 4:30. I checked out the menu then went to the bar to order a Patty Melt ($16) with a side of Mac and Cheese. The total was something north of $20. I thought that perhaps the Mac and Cheese was an upcharge but when I asked about the total I was told no Mac and cheese is a side option but the price was due to Fri/Sat pricing being in effect. There is no no notice of alternate pricing posted anywhere and the price I saw was on the menus which were in a display rack just inside the door. I canceled my order. If I have a negative experience at a restaurant I usually bring it to the manager's attention for any correction but in this case it is apparently the policy of Spliffs to charge more on weekends but without printing alternate menus. If you go I hope you will find the food good but if you are there on a Fri/Sat verify the prices before you get caught in their price-switch. read more

I got the Mac n cheese with chicken bowl with a side salad. The Mac n cheese wasn't not impressed. It was dry, hardy could taste a cheese sauce, and practically no seasoning. The side salad was fresh and good. My friend ordered a chicken sandwich and they forgot to put the chicken on it. They took it off the bill however it took a while to get another sandwich to go. All I have to say is Sabreè & Angel are great great great! I felt like I've known them my whole life. They recommended a delicious drink which is the Ardwolf-Jag Water. We enjoyed that along with the Wake N Bake burger with a side of grilled broccoli. The burger was so good that I had to request a hug from chef Juice himself and thank him. Really nice staff! I tried to use their touch less QR code for the menu, but for some reason it was not working. No worries, they had plenty of physical copies. You walk in and seat yourself, once you're ready to order you order at the register! They then give you a number to put on your table and they'll bring your food to you. I ordered the steak rice bowl, a side of Mac n cheese, and this huge Liquid Death sparkling water. I have never heard of Liquid Death before but it's actually really good! I really enjoyed my steak bowl. It was really tasteful and packed with flavor. The Mac n cheese was a little underwhelming, it wasn't as good as I was expecting. We stopped by Spliff's Gastropub last night before heading into a concert at the Florida Theater. Our friends told us it was a great place to go before a show and I have to admit it was! Unfortunately, they had to handle a situation in the rest rooms (some loser intentionally trashed both bathrooms) so only 1 waitress/bartender was working the front. She worked her tail off running orders to tables and filling people's bar orders. We placed our orders up front and grabbed two seats at the bar. Our drinks were brought over right away. I ordered a Jameson and Ginger with a lime and my hubby ordered a couple beers while we were there. For dinner I ordered a Patty Melt your Face! My husband ordered a grilled chicken sandwich and we both got kettle chips on the side. I'm gonna tell you that my patty melt was one of the best I've ever had!! It was smash burger style on toasted bread with grilled onions and cheese and it was delicious!!! I ate every bite! My husband said his chicken sandwich was perfect as well! We go to the Florida Theater quite often and I think this will be our new favorite spot to hit before or after a show! read more

Please read to see why I'm giving Spliff's 3 stars. We got here a bit after a UFC event at the nearby arena. We ordered inside (weren't told there would be a long wait, though we could see they were busy) and seated ourselves outside at the only available table. From when I did my Yelp check-in to when we got the food, we waited 50 minutes. We only ordered two burger meals, no customizations. We did a lot while we waited: walked around the block, said "no, sorry" to two panhandlers, did a lot of people watching, counted the number of squeaky old trucks that drove past us (Florida seems to have an unusual number of them), and mused over and over about where our food was. We also brainstormed what we were going to say in our review. In the end, the food did arrive and we really enjoyed it. My 8-year-old went from saying he would give a one-star review prior to the food, to being really pleased with the food; he gobbled it down, saying he would give them four stars after all. That said, the wait was just too excessive in my opinion. If they had told us it was a 45 minute wait or longer from the outset, we would have gone somewhere else. So, if you're coming after a big event, buyer beware. There will be a long wait. But, the food is very good, there are generous portions, and the cheese is melty and greasy. We really liked our burgers and the mac and cheese side was pretty good, too. read more

Hole in the wall vibe with bouji prices. I used to frequent this place often when the prices were more reasonable. It's a great spot and possibly the only spot for late night eats in downtown Jax. Service is always great! but the food can be inconsistent. You'll have an amazing burger one day and next it'll taste like a frozen patty boiled in water. Anyways... Interesting place - clean, nice staff, but odd in the sense that it feels as if it is having an identity crisis. Looking one direction it is almost an old diner feel, looking at another wall it's pub-ish. It's another walk up to order then go find a table place which was typical Jax based on our trip. Portion sizes are above average and there is plenty to choose from. My burger was good, came with a bag of chips - it's hard to have a spectacular burger when you order it without a bun...so no slam there. But...if you are going rest on "life changing mac & cheese" per the sign as you walk in the door, ya gotta nail the mac & cheese. This was meh at best and not the creamy, gooey kind, this is noodles with cheese. With each at $15, which I am fine paying for good food, it was just not worth it. read more

I'm guess that's just a side effect of being located downtown but it's still nice. I had The OG mac & cheese, which I found to be ok at best. It wasn't bad at all, just not the greatest. Being from Detroit, I judge all mac & cheese against Union Mac found at the Union Joints around Detroit. Nothing I've had in Jacksonville has come anywhere near the greatness of Union Mac, but Spliff's was some of the better that I've tried. Having said that, my girlfriend had a sandwich and absolutely loved it. If/when we stop in again, I would definitely do a sandwich next time myself. Went there for lunch, ordered the basic Burger, came out more than well done... Crispy even, they didn't ask how I wanted it cooked. Three packs of ketchup and some of their boutique mayonnaise and it was almost moist. A gastropub that only offers ketchup in packets and does not offer mayonnaise that's not spicy? Then the server... Ish person just assumed that my change was her tip. It was only 85 cents and had she not assumed that she would have gotten a bigger tip. But I think she's more of a bartender than a server / waitress. Didn't get her name. Won't be back to call her by that name whatever it is. Coca-Cola only comes in cans. Was going to the Florida Theater for a show the other night and wanted to grab dinner somewhere close by and lucky for found Spliff's which was literally right around the corner. We walked in right as they were opening at 6:00PM since they close for a few hours after lunch. We sat down at a table and were given menus since they were just opening (normally you just grab them when you walk in). They have a lot of beer options (many are local) and plenty of liquor as well though I did not see a cocktail menu. Sadly still on sober month for us so no drinks for us so we ordered the Thai Sticks for an appetizer. If you just just read Thai Sticks and not the description you would probably think you are getting something like Chicken Satay but that's not the case. These are dumplings and they were quite tasty. I was a big fan of the spicy Szechuan sauce they were served with but I will say it wasn't all that spicy. For my entree I ordered the Wilbur Pocket with Mac & Cheese. The Wilbur is stuffed with Honey Ham, Bacon, Chedder, and Honey Mustard for dipping (I also got the Habanero Ranch though it was more of a Habanero Mayo). All their Sandwiches and Pockets come with either a side of Mac & Cheese, Greek Pasta Salad, Cucumber & Goat Cheese Salad, or a House Salad. But when you claim to be the best Mac & Cheese in Jacksonville how do you not pick it! The Pocket was great and so flaky. The Mac & Cheese was also very good but could have been a little warmer. My husband, daughter and I ordered 3 different dishes and everything was AMAZING! If you want comfort food, this is the place! This was our first time here, and I ordered a shrimp Mac cheese, my husband a pot belly sandwich, and my daughter a steak with goat cheese sandwich. I enjoyed every bite of everything I tasted...so yum! Thank goodness I have leftovers. I would definitely go here again the next time I'm downtown. It included 2 - 1/3 lb. patties, goat cheese, provolone cheese, candied bacon, crispy onion strings, porcini balsamic glaze, white truffle oil, sun-dried tomatoes, green leaf lettuce, garlic dill aioli on a toasted Kaiser roll. This burger was cooked to perfection and the combination of everything was amazing. I really wanted fries with it but they don't offer them as a side so opted for the chips. I must say, they were very good. Of course I could only eat half of it because it was so big. Worked for me as I got 2 great meals out of the deal. This restaurant was just 2 mins from my hotel in downtown, and I could have walked, but chose to drive. The menu is big on burgers, sandwiches and mac n cheese variations. They also have some other options, but I didn't pay much attention to those. I sat at the bar area and found the restaurant to be pretty slow on a Monday evening. As slow as it was, service was just poor...you would think it would be the other way around. I chose the most expensive burger, the trust fund burger. It's 2 1/3 lb patties, and the patties are smashed so really only one way to cook them, well done. For my side, I chose the mac n cheese. They had 24 beers on tap, none were brown ale, and they didn't have any in bottles either, so I settled for a Stout. Local Stout and it was pretty hearty. Burger was pretty decent, not the best I've had but not bad either. The place did the trick, but the atmosphere was just not that great the time I was there. Maybe it's just not my type of place.
