Went to Spliff's Friday before a show at the Florida Theater that started at 7:30pm. Placed food order @ 6:22pm - 1order of loaded chips ($15), 1 order Mac n cheese (String Cheese Incident - $15), 1 mixed drink and 1 soda (was given at time of order), adding more than a 20% tip. At 7:20, the waitress was just bringing us the chips as we were standing to leave...we asked her to bag it to go, which she did, but no Mac n Cheese in site. Other person in my party scarfed down what they could on the short walk to theater - can't take it in... Needless to say, not happy with the service, or lack of getting full order. We came here after attending a concert on a whim. Nothing fancy when you walk in but still inviting. The young ladies taking care of orders were nice and fast. They have a mass selection of beer on tap and fair amount of wines. The menu is a mix bag. We started out order with potstickers then ordered a big grilled cheese and barbecue meat macaroni and cheese to split. The portions are very good and prices are reasonable. The food came out super fast! The potstickers were kinda like average not really too special. The sandwich was delicious. The cheese they use was a great blend. The macaroni was very tasty and extremely flavorful. We had enough to take home. I can say I would definitely go back because there is so much to try!! The burger was so flavorful, it was a double smash burger (two 1/3 lb patties!) with all your expected burger toppings (tomato, lettuce, onion) plus garlic dill aioli. 4.5/5 stars I came here with some friends on a Saturday night around 6pm. Wasn't too busy and the staff were very friendly. Menus are in a basket by the door. Go to the counter when ready to order. Its a small bar/restaurant with seating for maybe 40? Mostly high top seats and i think 2 4-person tables (metal chairs that aren't super comfortable). I cant give it 5 stars because I just don't think the flavor delivers for the cost. Also, the chicken in the rice bowl had an overly powering dill flavor. I loved the yum yum sauce that came with it though! I was also impressed with how fresh and well cooked the broccoli was. The OG mac and cheese was good, but not anything I need to go back for, honestly. This is a total dive bar ambiance with world class Mac n cheese, great drinks, and amazing service!

I actually fell in love with this place for a few reasons. I was next door attending a private concert next door at 1904. The concert ended after 10 and I was given the recommendation for a grilled cheese sandwich . There's plenty of seating in the front while you wait for your to go order or if you'd like to get a small table for you and a friend. The cashier was very nice by asking me if i'd like anything to drink. Although I declined, he suggested water while I wait. I walked towards the restroom then I started to notice the art on the wall, at first glance I wondered, "who's mom is that nude on the walls?". This was instantly a conversation peace. I discover all the lovely signs that lead you to the backyard patio. On the stage I saw a Dj playing light tunes and a couple of bartenders outside telling me how lax and kickback the place is. I'm a sucker for patio lights, a DJ and good food. Plus, if you Spliff, you spliff on the back patio ;) The Mac and cheese was excellent, but I was notttt a fan of the vegetable potstickers, maybe opting for something else next time. 4 Stars for surprisingly good food at a spot that feels solidly like a pub. After a day of hearty food and a late entry to this establishment, I opted for the Bowl of Green. A salad at a Gastropub? I wasn't expecting too much- despite a fabulous description of greens. What I got was a really gorgeous bowl of green (the name is truly descriptive). My favorite parts? The green goddess dressing, which I have to think is homemade because if this chunky version of a green goddess sauce could be purchased at a store, I would already have cabinets full of bottles. Another surprising plus was the thin sliced green apples in the salad. It's a welcome bit of sweet in a bowl of delectable veggies. My dining compadres ordered Spliff Pockets. I don't know which ones they ordered, but omg these are good. They come out volcanic. Like, cut one open to vent for a bit before biting! But, oh man, that puff pastry is perfection and I stole more than a few bites. Not healthy like my bowl of green, but if I'm going to be sinful, I chose to dive into puff pastry pockets. The service was painfully slow, but it seemed like they were surprised by the amount of people coming in on a Columbus Day Monday. With other bars nearby closed, they definitely got a bit slammed and I can't blame them because it seemed unpredictable. You walk up and order at the bar and then grab a seat. There was a definite line, and the poor bartender was simultaneously taking food orders, making drinks, and serving tables as food came out of the kitchen. Overall, a surprisingly good spot for food. The music was on a early post punk mood when I was there and it's a little loud depending on the crowd. Outdoor or indoor seating. My burger was smash style but crispy and flavorful. I was super excited to try the food here. Everything looks so tasty. Unfortunately the food was bland and for $15 I shouldn't have to take the tails off the jumbo shrimp in my dish. I added seasonings, jalapeños, & some butter to my dish once I've as home. I think the food here has potential and I would be more than willing to try again as the environment and staff were awesome. If you're looking for a savory, melt in your mouth hamburger, look no further fam. This is the spot. The Burning man and wake n bake hamburgers are to die for. The burgers fall apart perfectly in your mouth. The Mac n cheese is a good-sized portion to leave anyone satisfied at the end of the meal. You won't be disappointed in the meal. But the real kicker is their variety of beers. At the time of writing this they've kicked 613 kegs this year. The local brews are all great, but the Wolfweizen and Bold City IPA were my favorites. Ordered the Trust Fund burger and the steak rice bowl. The burger came out after 30 minutes, and the side of mac and cheese was cold. Then waited another 20 minutes for the steak rice bowl to be delivered to my spouse, and I had completely finished the trust fund burger by the time the bowl was delivered. The stake bowl was entirely cold-- we saw it sitting at the window for at least 15 minutes... when it was finally delivered, It only had 8 pieces of steak and was literally 90% rice, which would've been a major disappointment even had it been warm. Spending over $40 on meals that realistically should've been no more than $30, and coming out completely cold, is super disappointing. Won't return. read more

When it comes to expectation versus reality, I must admit reality blew my socks off. I was expecting a plain chicken sandwich and steamed broccoli, nothing special right? WRONG! I've never had a chicken sandwich as delightful as the one I had from Spliffs. There's the buttery bread toasted to perfection. The juiciest, well seasoned chicken chopped just right. I'm not sure what kind of sauce was on there but it was amazing and last but not least perfectly grilled broccoli. After visiting the Jax Main Library we were looking for a lunch spot that was new to us and within walking distance. Of course we pull up Yelp and find Spliff's Gastropub. You order at the bar and they bring the food to your table. They also have outdoor seating as well, but we opted for indoors today. Teen ordered the recommended Duval Dirty Bird with mac n cheese side. I ordered the BST with a side of Greek Pasta salad, and hubby had the Pot Belly Grilled Cheese with the Greek Salad as well. They have quite a selection of beers available, as well as wine, but today we settled on non-alcoholic beverages. My sandwich was served on tasty wheat bread with an oatmeal crust. Bacon , spinach, and tomato, and two cheeses - yummy. I've had spinach on my "BLT" before, and loved it, and I can say this one was tops as well. My only complaint was my pasta salad dressing was very abundant, and my sandwich was soggy on the side facing the plate. It would have been nice to have the salad in a separate bowl to avoid this and I will remember to request this on any future visits. Hubby enjoyed his sandwich as well, and teen said her's was very good. The mac n cheese was creamy and she ate every bite. She is a bit of a mac n cheese snob, so this was a good sign. Both the grilled cheese sandwiches were served with a side of beer cheese (? - we think?). It didn't add anything to the plate, but hubby did dip some of his salad in it and enjoyed it. (Yes, he's weird!). It's hard to comment on service as you order at the bar and other than delivering the food to the table we did not see anyone after that point. I suppose if you need a drink refill you could take it back up to the bar to get a refill. Meals are served on paper plates with plastic forks, so we cleaned off our table into the nearby trash bin on our way out. I had really high hopes for this place as the menu sounded delish but our experience was awful. We sat at the bar where some other people had just gotten up. We assumed the bartender would wipe the dirty counter, she didn't. She proceeded to try to serve us at a dirty counter. We ordered an appetizer and two entrees. All the food took nearly an hour to receive and the app came out after our main courses. When we asked about the delay, the bartender seemed irritated that we'd have the audacity to ask such a question and said it'll be out when it's ready....no desire to get an update on how much longer. Further, all items were served within a 15 minute period which. I ordered the Chicken Rice bowl that was literally just rice with steamed broccoli (menu said sautéed veggies) and chicken--something I could have easily made at home. My daughter and I stopped here before a concert downtown. We both had the Wake and Bake burgers. This consists of two 1/3 lbs. pattie's, a fried egg, bacon, and cheese. My daughter described it this way "an aggressive burger that was impressively good" and added that it may have been the best burger she's ever had. I would say that there are a lot of flavors coming at you. It was very good however after two bites I had to resort to knife and forking it. I was making quite a mess otherwise. I travel to Jacksonville from Seattle - via Orlando International Airport - via rental car once a year, I found this place last year at night, starving & tired. When I end up anyplace that has Patty Melts I tend to go for that, more often than not I'm usually disappointed... I saw the Patty Melt My Face and thought, damn if that isn't a dare. Oh my f-ing god I lost my mind! Finally somebody got it not just right but perfect. My first reaction was the chef/cook was a some sort of magician, this was Voodoo man, I thought was dreaming...the ratios of onion to cheese to sauce and those burgers were perfectly cooked, juicy ... and the the bread; fucking WOW, perfectly griddled, caramelized and not overwhelming. Heaven. Mac-n-Cheese as a side I thought would be way to much food but, shit! here we go again!! Delicious! I was literally completely nervous when yesterday I came back, exactly a year apart, the staff super sweet, and I asked if the chef was still here..."Yes!" Holy crap! I normally order patty melts with bacon because I've been burned so many times & I figure - well at least I'll enjoy the bacon. Last year I did like usual. This time I was so freaked out he was still back there I forgot the bacon and had it OG style. I showed the bartender my picture of my meal from last year, yes I'm a dork she hooked me up: Patty Melt My Face, side of Mac and a perfect IPA (well two, cause I'm watching my health) My only regret is that it's going to be a really long year to get back there and want try EVERYTHING.
