Despite being a sports bar on a college football night, we were able to be seated almost immediately. The waitress was attentive, but not overly pushy. At no time did we feel like we were being rushed to give up the table. I ordered the French dip sandwich with fries and was very happy. The meat to bread ratio was generous to say the least. The bread was super soft and fresh. They didn't give a lot of au jus, but I am 99% sure that had I asked for more, they would have come through for me. Stopped in for a chill dinner after driving all day from Miami to Jacksonville and this was the perfect spot. We're sports fans so it worked out that the games were on all the TVs, first weekend of playoff football so lots of excitement, and the food hit the spot. Our waitress checked on us once, never offered to fill our drinks or get me another beer (manager did), etc. If she was slammed, ok, but she was filling her own drink at the station next to us and talking to another two staff members. Berry salad half was large - yummy salad and dressing, but the shrimp was also ice cold. Food took a while to come out, so be prepared. The manager did come by and let us know that the kitchen was backed up. Wasn't super crowded but they may have been short staffed. I didn't complain. Essentially, I still tipped decent at 18%, but only due to the manager who served us, filled our drinks, and kept us updated on the status of our food. Brew & Barrel has a new happy customer! I was scrolling on Yelp last week and saw this spot (opened about six months) on Beach Blvd a few miles from my house. I stopped in on Taco Tuesday, yes please! They offered fish (blackened, grilled or fried), chicken and shredded pork BBQ, $2 each. I ordered the blackened fish and chicken tacos. Both were deliscious. The toppings were fresh and plentiful including red onions, cheese and tomato. The fish and chicken were flavorful. I also ordered the berry salad, which was fabulous. The strawberries and blueberries were bright and colorful. The combo of fruit, feta and candied pecans meshed so nicely with the poppy seed dressing. Bonus, I prefer mixed greens. They have different food specials during the week. Monday, $1 wings, Tuesday, $2 tacos, Wednesday, $10 Shipwreck chicken sandwich, Thursday, $9 flatbreads, and Friday, $9.99 tavern burger. We decided to celebrate my mom's birthday at Brew and Barrel, a new spot for us. The restaurant has a sports bar vibe with lots of TVs, pool tables, and arcade games. Parking was plentiful and we found seating easily. They have a nice outdoor kids' area, although its location right next to the smoking section made us hesitant to let the kids play there. We tried a variety of dishes. The fried pickles were a bit different from what we expected, with long-cut pickles and a lot of breading. The breading didn't stick well to the pickles but the aioli that came with it was tasty. The cheesy bread, marinated in red wine, had a subtle but enjoyable flavor. For mains, my wife loved the Berry Salad, but unfortunately, my mom found the Reuben sandwich disappointing. She said that it was too saucy and with overly chipped meat. My Dos Pollo dish was a bit of a mess, swimming in gravy and tasting like frozen chicken. Taste was okay but it seemed kind of sloppy Dessert was a molten chocolate lava cake, similar to what you'd find at a chain restaurant like Chili's. The beer selection was decent, though nothing stood out as unique. Service was good, but overall, the food didn't impress us enough to warrant a return visit specifically for dining. Met up with some friends for a Friendsgiving/Jags game on a Sunday. We arrived at 12pm to get some seats and grab some eats before the kickoff. As we walked in (newbies), the place was surprisingly spacious and open. There are pool tables and games on the left side, bar with seating in the middle, and lots of tables for dining on the right. TVs lined the walls, so it was great to watch the game. I made sure to sit facing the screens. Hehe. And they have a cool Kids Area at the front, too! That definitely kept the children occupied as the adults watched the game. We got some food for sharing and our own meals as well. Fried green tomatoes were yummy, but that was a LOT of pimento cheese on top. So much that I think crackers would be nice to eat the rest of it with. Hehe. Drunken cheesey bread was a little too soggy for me. Maybe if it dried out and then cooked it, maybe it would taste different? I would have been fine with just regular cheesey crusted bread. The kids' pizza looked good! Hehe. I sampled the nachos and deviled eggs, tasty. Nachos were definitely huge enough to share with all. My original reason for picking the place was to try the Oven-Braised Short Ribs ... I was told they were sold out of it the night before (sad face). So, I ended up getting the Steak Frittes. Even though it wasn't my first choice, it was flavorful and delicious. Cooked medium to perfection. Fried onion shoestring wasn't on the menu, but I think it gave it a nice flavored touch. We just love this neighborhood spot! We have visited every week since they opened and it just keeps getting better. They have already made multiple changes based on customer feedback and I love that. They listen to the people. Tonight at the suggestion of Tyler, who is a great server, we tried two new appetizers. The pretzel bites and corn nuggets. We liked both. I had my standard order of fried Mayport shrimp but with half sweet potato fries and half regular fries. They were delicious as always and of course I love that they now serve cocktail and tartar sauce. The sweet potato fries were great! My Dad had his normal order of the bacon cheeseburger but was so happy about the sweet potato fries as those are his favorite. Hubby tried the new chicken Parmesan sandwich and loved it. People, this is a monster of a sandwich, so beware. This place offers great appetizers, burgers and sandwiches, salads, desserts, a full bar as well as TVs galore, pool tables, darts, etc. and the owners and staff are great! Great new Addition for the neighborhood. Tucked in a strip mall so there is plenty of parking. There are 2 porches out front however no TVs on the porches. The main area if a large room filled with a bar, table, and an area with a pool table and dart board. Service was great- if we asked for something it can quick and the server came by often enough that we were never missing anything. I ordered the nachos. They were A+. I have been to Brew & Barrel several times as it is only a mile from where I live. My husband & I were so glad to see a full service restaurant open up in this area! Atmosphere is nice, bar is plenty big & servers are very nice. However, each time I have tried to order the wings, it is a problem. We asked for all drums because we don't like the flats. We have been told several times that we can't order all drums due to the Mon. special for wings. That makes absolutely no sense!! If you need to order more wings to accommodate this request, you should do that!! We do this at a number of restaurants in the area, no problem!! They may charge an upcharge, which is no problem. Wings are not cheap, we should not have to pay for something we don't like. We have ordered the pizza several times & it is always over cooked to where the edge of the crust is black. We were there last Fri. night, saw three different pizzas come out, all were over cooked. When we went to order ours, they were out of pizza! I had The Charleston burger which comes with a fried green tomato and pimento cheese. It was really good and cooked perfectly. My husband and son had the house salad which looked really fresh and good and they both said it was. For their meal they did the wings one had the Buffalo and one had the Shipwreck sauce. The Shipwreck sauce ones were really good and I will get them next time. There will actually be more than one next time, because there a few more menu items I want to try. read more

I had seen the sign for this for a long time and was waiting for it to open. This place has a lot of potential. I'd give it a 3.5 if I could but in the spirit of supporting local businesses- let's round up! Especially since a lot of the lows could be easily avoided with different server. The highs: First - the wings! They're unique and delicious; brined in sweet tea and smoked; they were crispy and salty and sweet and didn't need any sauce (they come naked). We really enjoyed them - the highlight of our meal. They make the sauces in house; we had the BBQ, ranch and their house sweet and spicy sauce. The ranch was pretty good, sour cream base. The BBQ was nice - sweet and peppery. The spicy wing sauce was pretty good, but didn't really go with wings. The OK: The burger and the fish and chips were ok but could be improved. The burger - and this could simply be the service - came pretty undercooked. It was a solid medium, which is too rare for ground beef. They do blend it with bacon in the grind, and it's ground in house according the the menu. The server never asked how we wanted the burger cooked so I assume they just cooked it to medium. The flavor was good - a nice crust and a nice flavor and definitely can taste the bacon in it. Supposed to come with lettuce tomato and onion; mine had no onion and a half slice of tomato. The bun wasn't toasted so it got a little wet. Correct all those things and it's a good burger! The fish was placed on top of wet slaw. This made it wet, and the batter just came off. Flavor was good though. Wife liked the slaw, which was a wasabi slaw, it was weird to me. The Meh: mostly - the service. Our server was nice, but she was very lacking in knowledge of the menu and had to go and ask the kitchen simple questions - like did they have honey mustard (it's on the menu, we saw later, but she said they didn't). She never brought some things we asked for, brought the wrong food..it detracted from the experience. She also brought us the wrong beers, which we drank it was fine. But what was weird was - we ordered the same thing and they were two very different beers! Which leads to my last suggestion. For a place with "Brew" in the name - they had a disappointing lack of variety in the drink menu - just your typical American beers and exactly two craft beers. All in all we would go back for the wings and try some other things. read more

A few weeks ago my racquetball buddy Chris McGuire invited a few league guys to a new spot on Beach and San Pablo. Brew and Barrel Tavern occupies the old Chinese Buffet spot in the Big Lots plaza. Completely remodeled and renovated, the inside is fantastically fresh with three main areas...a billiards and dart area, a main dining area with multiple tables able to accommodate large groups, and the large main bar. Spacious yet personal. My first visit I tried the Shipwreck Chicken Sandwich with fries. Panko breaded chicken breast topped with pepper Jack cheese, lettuce tomato and Shipwreck sauce, a sweet chili bbq sauce. The breast was huge and perfectly breaded. The sauce was sweet and tangy. The fries were hot, seasoned and crispy. I was so impressed with my first bite I immediately planned my return to review other items. The service was excellent, engaging and personable. Amanda was the Bartender and she was more than attentive. Huge BINGO fan too apparently . I also had the pleasure of meeting and talking with owner Stephen Chelgren. He also owns Tavern on 1st and the Wreck Tiki Lounge. We exchanged pleasantries and he was a terrific guy. My buddies had the Pork Nachos and the couple next to me got the Steak & Cheese served on a baguette (my favorite). Everyone complimented their entrees. I literally came back the next day but unfortunately they are not open for lunch except for Fridays. Fast forward a few weeks and I made my triumphant return. As I entered I spotted Steve speaking with a large group in the dining room, always a great sign seeing owners engaging with guests and he remembered me as Fast Eddy's from my previous visit. He introduced me to co-owner Jason Puzey who was also very welcoming and affable. I look forward to getting to know them both better. Smiling like an old friend who's up to no good, Amanda again was at the bar to greet me. I ordered a dozen of their Tavern Wings which are brined for 24 hrs in sweet tea and then Mesquite Smoked for a dry rubbed texture. They were so flavorful and delicious. There are dipping and tossed sauce options as well. For my entree I was considering the Chopped Steak but Amanda recommended her favorite the Dos Pollo, grilled chicken breasts, sun dried tomato, creamy goat cheese, fresh basil, mashed potatoes, green beans and a creamy lemon gravy sauce. It was a true Southern masterpiece. Piping hot and perfectly balanced flavors, all complimenting the grilled chicken. Well portioned and plenty of green beans. An elegantly presented dish yet mannered as real Southern comfort food. On my previous visit I enjoyed a piece of Key Lime Pie but it's been removed so I indulged in the New Orleans Bread Pudding made from croissants and topped with a bourbon vanilla sauce and served with vanilla ice cream. A sweet finale that concluded an incredible meal. I highly recommend visiting Brew & Barrel Tavern for anything from an after work beer to a casually romantic dinner to throwing back some brews while running the table. Open till 2 am with a late night menu till 1am certain nights but double check. read more

It's a great spot to hang out with friends due to the fact there are pool tables and football to entertain you. We were a bit hesitant to visit just for the food, no alcohol November, but so glad we did! We were greeted immediately and had a choice of seats, we chose the corner spot at the bar! The service was impeccable! It's a pretty large interior with 2 pool tables, darts, and some arcade type games. The walls have plenty of televisions so we'll definitely return for the next Jags game! We were pleasantly surprised with the taste and quality of the food, definitely upscale for bar food! We started with the fried deviled eggs, they have a crispy coating and they're drizzled with balsamic and they sit on a bed of micro greens. Magically delicious! Also had to try the wings, they're soaked in sweet tea and then smoked with a dry rub. We recommend the shipwreck sauce with the blue cheese, the double dip with the juicy wings is perfection. We followed the wings by splitting the berry salad topped with an aïoli dressing. It's tart, crunchy, sweet and savory. It's the perfect combination of flavors and the large salad is huge, sad I forgot to snap a picture! The final course did not disappoint, the Dos Pollo entree is a bit salty but oh so delicious. The mashed potato's had a little bit of skin and some chunks that scream homemade and the green beans were cooked to crunchy perfection. I had a burger... I mean, any burger that has ground up bacon in it can't be all bad, right? It was tasty and juicy, the bun was soft and fresh. The fries were fries. The service is underwhelming. I ate at the bar. While the (I guess) owner did come by to see how our food was, the bartenders seemed to always be off doing something else. We always had to flag them down for more cocktails and when they delivered my burger, I got no set-up, or real napkin and then the bar staff just disappeared. I had to grab cocktail napkins from behind the bar. Many of the patrons seemed to be friends of staff, not ordinary customers. It wasn't overly busy, so I'm not sure why I experienced the lack of focus. Will I try Brew and Barrel again? Yes... But if they don't fix the service problems, I don't see the place lasting. That would be a shame, because it's a nice place, and an alternative sorely needed in the area. I think the owner (or manager) cares, he just needs to get his staff's focus in the right place. read more

Late post but we had such a good experience that I had to leave one. After attending a friend's wedding a group of us were looking for some late night snacks and ended up here. Ordered some fries, corn nuggets, and pretzel bites. All of these were above average for bar apps. The star of the show for us was the pickle slices. Super tasty. The pickles are made in house and theyre sliced the long way so you get a lot more pickle in each bite. We only came in for some light snacks but we assume the entrees are just as amazing BUT the thing that made our experience so great was Jason (GM) and Sam (manager).
