Tried to be positive about this one but ended up stopping at a fast food window afterwards. We asked how the process worked and got this very fast directions that no one in our party quite got. The waitress came back to check on us and asked how we were doing . With a look of disgust told her not sure. She said ok and walked away. And went over and sat with some her friends that were dining here. Felt like the fish was missing something. We asked for suggestions before ordering but none given. Traveling down to Florida for Raleigh on Christmas and ended up here because it was the only place open on Christmas day besides Starbucks! I am SO glad that I found it. Huge fan of Asian food, especially Pho, but had never been to a hot pot restaurant before. Splendid Shabu was a great first experience. I like that the restaurant is not huge, it's pretty intimate inside which allowed us to have an even better experience. I ordered the house broth, pho noodles, with extra spinach and beef as my protein. My husband go the surf and turf with beef and shrimp and white rice. I must say, the house broth is really bland! By itself it tastes like salt water. They had other broths to choose from such as miso and curry, but wanted to try the house one. But great thing is, they have a sauce bar that you can use to make your broth however you like! Because the house broth was so bland, I was able to truly spice mine up and it was delicious! They give you enough broth and veggies to really make 3 bowls of soup! Extra noodles only cost $2 which was well worth it. Overall this was such a clutch place the find! I wanted something different from the usual fare, so what's more different than hot pot? The parking lot was packed as was the restaurant. Thankfully there wasn't a wait for seating and we were able to get a spot immediately. You're seated across from one another so that you can both reach the soup pot on the little stove setup. I ordered the seafood and beef combo with spicy base soup and my sister chose a bunch and did a make her own combo. The broth arrives first and is in a pot with a divider. The server will tell you how long each item should be cooked and which order is best. It's a fun way to enjoy a meal that is still healthy and filling. I enjoy coming to this establishment for the lunch express bowl. The seafood, and vegetarian express bowls are what I frequent. The amount of seafood in the express bowl can be inconsistent when you come here almost weekly and can notice!! Broth flavors can also be inconsistent as well. Came here after a convention with a few new friends. There's quite a few hot pot places where I live, but it's a bit of an unexpected find for a Shabu Shabu place to be in Pooler. Glad the people of Pooler love Shabu Shabu/hot pot too! If you're not familiar, Shabu Shabu is a Japanese onomatopoeia for "swish swish" and if you're familiar with sukiyaki then it's in the general vein-- think savory though vs. sweet. In general, it's Chinese hot pot like you know it or for some people it's like Melting Pot the restaurant. You have a broth of your choice, a plateful of veggies, thinly sliced meats, tofu, and seafood. They also have a myriad of other side options --- quail egg, enoki, taro, wood ear, tofu skin.. etc. Our group killed a few options - Vegetarian (tofu + vegan style/Veggies galore), meat lovers (beef, chicken, pork, or lamb), surf & turf (seafood and choice of meat). For broths, we chose, spicy, house, and miso, with vermicelli, udon, and ramen style noodles. We also stacked up on some side items: fish balls, wood ear, quail egg, enoki, taro-- Though some of these come with the veggie option. To start off, we also got some gyoza and the grilled baby octopus. The gyoza - really good and a big recommend if you're just feeling a quick snack or something to share. Grilled baby octopus- not overly chewy like expected and nicely cooked. The sauce was really good on top of it. Also recommended. Be sure to check out the sauce bar toward the side. They have a small recipe list tapped to the top for good combinations too. If you like mushrooms, I do recommend trying the wood ear. It's basically a squishy mushroom that looks similar to an ear, but not exactly. It tastes good though! Haha. Enoki and the like are all great options for the mushroom lover too. Enoki is probably my fav. since it has a nutty flavor. The quail eggs come pre-boiled, but not fully cooked. I was confused at first since typically we just poach them in the broth, but this is a much cleaner and easier way to find them. I also imagine it's incredibly hard to people to easily crack these tiny eggs or what the heck to even do with the raw ones. You also get a big chicken egg too, with some of the menu options. If you like tofu-- the tofu skin and fried tofu are good too. I do recommend to keep them near your ladle, especially the normal tofu... as if it cooks too long it will disintegrate. The servers typically tell you of a hierarchy of cooking. If you're familiar with american hot pot.. it's similar in you let roots cook the longest. Add veggies toward the end to blanch them-- great for the napa and bok choy. Meats toward the beginning. So Roots & meats, noodles, eggs, veggies. If you have corn also drop that in early too. Rice noodles, clear noodles, or vermicelli tend to cook pretty quickly so if you get those make sure to pay attention to them. Ramen and udon are heartier and a great choice if you just want them to soak up some broth. We usually get the clear noodles when we do hot pot at home or sukiyaki and they tend to soak up much thicker broths, but they weren't as flavorful in the house broth. Dip them in some sauce before slurping them up to solve it. I imagine the heartier noodles to be good in the spicy, curry, or miso ones though. For broths-- I got the house broth and it is a bit neutral, but I heard the spicy broth had quite a bit of kick to it-- but if it's not spicy enough, there is the sauce bar with chilies and chili sauce. Overall, it is a bit pricey, but that tends to be hot pot. They have a sharing fee which is basically the price of a entree order, so not something I'd say to try. You will fill up though, and there is a lot of food, plus broth refills. Splendid Shabu also had boba tea, beer, and sake. :) read more

They say new things keep popping up in Pooler. I'm new to the area, but people have been raving about this place so I decided to check it out since these sorts of places are hard to find even in Atlanta. Splendid Shabu is situated behind the Sonic in the Sam's Club shopping center. It can be a little hard to spot if you weren't on a mission like I was. The space is nice, clean, and fairly open. I'd already eaten a large breakfast, so I thought that I would be fine sticking to the vegetarian option with udon. I definitely didn't realize the ridiculous amount of food that you get for the price. You get a full platter of meat (or of tofu selections if you choose the vegetarian option) along with the seasonal vegetables. I was so bloated that I couldn't finish it all. Those of you who know me know that that defeating my stomach can be quite a feat. The burners are individual, so you have your own little pot with your own specific broth. The ingredients seemed fresh, and there was a sauce bar a the corner of the restaurant that had a deliciously thick peanut sauce, ginger, green onion, and a selection of soy sauce variants. The boba was alright, nothing special, but sufficient to satisfy my boba craving after abstaining for over 2 months. read more

I used to live in a small city in China, and one of the cuisine options I lived for in the winter months was hot pot. Normally, I steer clear of yelp, because many of the reviews are either unnecessarily whiny or unnecessarily pretentious. In fact, I signed up for the sole purpose of giving this awesome restaurant as many stars as possible. It immediately reminded me of my experience in southeast Asia. Portions were large; options were abundant. Staff was very friendly and helpful; I knew what to do, but I appreciated that they took the time to explain the process to my wife and child. Prices were reasonable for the freshness of ingredients and the size of the portions. Yes, you cook the food yourself at the table; if you are averse to interactivity with your meal, you should try googling "hot pot" before you go and give the place a poor rating. Yes, you could be high on bath salts and have a bad trip at the sauce bar; that is not the fault of the restaurant, and also is a poor excuse for a poor rating. You one- and two-star people should reserve that vitriol for mediocre chain restaurants, and stop bullying small mom and pop establishments. Frankly, I don't think you need sauce, just enjoy the flavors of the food and broth together. Anyway, if you want to check out a unique spot that offers Asian comfort food (my town does not have anything like this, so I appreciate it even more), come visit Pooler. The place was packed on a Thursday at 6, if that says anything. Have a Tsingtao, chill, and enjoy some really good Asian cuisine. LOVE LOVE LOVE! SOOOOO thrilled to FINALLY have a lovely restraunt with amazing, kind service, and healthy, nutritious food. It's almost too good to be true. (Locals it may help if you're looking for it, it's where the old pita pit was behind the sonic by Sams in pooler) You definitely must go and try this place! Especially if you are looking for something different at a decent price! I'm amazed at what a variety of food you get, how fresh the food was and also how much fun it was having the pot to cook it ourselves. AWESOME place to go for a date night, family or friends. You take your time eating and cooking, open atmosphere, so it's nice and relaxing and for socializing. The service was amazing... It is a family owned business that we found out also owns pooler seafood, another place I highly recommend, so they get their food fresh and a lot, I believe I heard, locally. They were very accommodating and patient with people like us who have never had hot pot and had questions since it was our first time. Now I know we will be pros and know exactly what to do next time! It's hard to explain, but it was wonderful how you make simple choices yet you get such a variety if that makes sense... If you go you'll understand what I mean. Usually with restraunt you order seafood and veggies you're getting maybe fried shrimp and celery rare to get more than what you ask for/order.. But here you get a plate of all sorts of shrimp, calamari, crab, fish, squid, mussels, clam etc, and veggies; a variety of beautiful whole and slice mushrooms, and assortment of greens, a hefty thing of noodles, I was amazed.. You will NOT leave this place unsatisfied that is a guarantee! I had to take over half of mine home with me... And omg... After the favors from the broth, food, and sauce sat over night.... It was amazinggggggg left over!!!! I literally could go on and on. As a soup & Asian cuisine lover AND With winter coming, I can guarantee I will be a regular here.. ***Just a note: I, personally, would NOT recommend bringing small children (Probably stick with 8+) They have to bring the raw meats out on separate plates from the raw veggies and whatever else you order, it makes the table *very crowded* in addition to the hot boiling broth on top of an open flame individual stove burners right on the table (2-4 on each table) so yeh if you have a kid you would have to keep your eye on them constantly. Also I hope the owners get dimmer lighting! This does not effect my review of the place but I believe it would help so much! I had to work in Pooler this weekend and saw great reviews on this place. I love broth based soups, so I decided to give Splendid Shabu a try. The location is in a plaza near a Sam's Club and Byrd's cookies. The restaurant was full, but I didn't wait long to be seated. Once seated it did take a while for my serve to come, but it was probably due to fact that I was eating solo. When my server came she was very pleasant. She briefly explained the menu. You select a broth, noodle, and meat. You have an option to sway from the combo, but you get charged per item added. I opted to do the house broth, pho noodles, and chicken. I really wanted to try the rice noodles, but I was a little nervous. I also ordered the mango boba tea which I wasn't a huge fan of. The food was quick to come out and pretty fun to cook. The food was favorful from the broth. They also have a station where you can create your own sauce. I only wish I would have gotten more noodles, but I'll know next time to order extra. Finally, I ordered the green tea mochi. Super odd favor, but fun to try. I really enjoyed the experience. Prices were reasonable. I paid $21.95 for my entire meal. read more

Nice clean restaurant with fast service, lots of soup bases and options. Our first time there we didn't think their pre selected meat choices were enough and ordered our meats individually. What a sham. Went in here 1 time, never again. The gimmick was that you create and cook your own soup at yr table. If you are vegan I imagine it's ok. There are two cooktops to each table for a Pot divided into two sides - each person can pick a broth (miso, curry, house, oyster etc), each pick a meat (lamb, beef, pork, seafood, chicken, tofu etc), you pick a noodle (undon, ramen, clear noodles etc), comes with a side dish of vegetables (variety mushrooms, zucchini, broccoli, Bok Choy etc). You can pick more items a la carte. The experience is fabulous - great for groups or solo too. You cook the veggies, meat & noodles at your table. The meat is very thinly sliced takes 80 seconds to cook. Veggies and noodles take 2-3 minutes to cook. They have an amazing sauce bar. This is what gives your dish flavor. At the sauce bar they also have garnishes for your dish (onion, chives, garlic, cilantro). Different sauces for your to make. They have a desert that I did not get to try because we were too full but it sounded Devine - dumpling ice cream (various flavor a to choose from) -- red bean, sesame, green tea, mango etc) Stopped in for dinner. They have a different menu which takes sometime getting used to. They also have a sauce bar. For a new comer, it's easier to miss it. The waiter and waitresses do a proactive job in explaining things to you. Highly recommend the miso soup. Spicy soup base is good with House sauce. Okay...I was very excited to try out this place and be and my sister went there. Walking in the atmosphere was nice. it reminded me of the Melting Pot but instead of cheese they focus on soup or both base style of cooking. We were greeted by an waitress and showed us to our seats and explained to us how everything works. So up to this point everything was ok..once we put in our order we went over to a bar and choose our seasoning. Our food comes and we start cooking my sister ate most of her food and she enjoyed it I started to eat mine the seasoning for me was a miss it just has the taste that something was missing. As my sister is eating she stops and says that she was ready to go, so I paid the bill and we left. On the drive home she tells me that her stomach is killing her (I will leave you all to figure out the rest). Wo both ended op getting sick once we left, therefore unfortunately we will not be returning to this place. Great restaurant in general but even BETTER when it's cold outside! When it's cold outside and you come in and you have a nice hot Shabu there is nothing that can compare to that warm feeling. My now-husband and I had our first date here over 3 years ago now. We make sure to spend the anniversary of that first date here every year! The experience is like no other. They have a wide offering of ingredients and customizing agents to make your soup exactly how you wish. I love that they offer wood ear and enoki mushrooms - as a mushroom fan, this is a game changer for me! Their bubble tea is wonderful as well; my personal favorite is the taro I've only ever gone to eat here with my husband but they seem to do very well with large parties of people. The ability to share and yet have a totally unique meal would be perfect for a large get together. Admittedly this is the first "hot pot" restaurant I have ever been to but this was a great and fun experience. They basically bring out the boiling broth and veggies/protein on a separate tray. I was really afraid of screwing this up but you really can't. You add the protein first then the veggies and cook to your liking. The seafood I ordered looked sushi grade and I kind of just wanted to eat it uncooked but thought I d play the game and glad I did! I'll start by saying this is the first time I've had shabu-shabu, so I'm not comparing this to any other, or vouching for authentic is it, just writing to say it is darn good - period. We tried three different types of meat at our table - beef, chicken, and lamb - and all were great. There wasn't any fat or gristle in any of the meat, and it was so thin that it was super tender, even if overcooked, which is easy to do with wafer thin slices. Two of us got the spicy broth, one of us the house broth. The spicy was REALLY spicy. I don't like spicy stuff, and just stirring the broth w/ my chopstick was enough to make me feel the heat on it. The portions are huge - the standard veggie plate had three kinds of mushrooms, cabbage, bok choy, bean sprouts, zucchini, and corn. None of us were able to eat that we had - three people could easily share two dinners and probably still not eat it all! I didn't care for the house sauce at all. I tried it, but ended up leaving it untouched and making a mix of hoisin and soy sauce, the same combo that I use when I have dim sum. We all had the udon noodles, which I love because of their thickness and chewy texture. Not sure how well a thinner noodle would stand up in the broth. One of our friends recommended this place and I took the kids out for dinner one night. Small intimate place with booths lining the walls and a central table looks like more for bigger parties or for singles that don't mind sharing space. Our Server explained the process and helped us out tremendously. My son and I shared a pot of Spicy broth with udon noodles, beef, pork and veggies and my other son chose his own curry broth and chicken, dumplings and meatballs. Both broths were Flavorful with just the right amount of kick(we love spicy) and the Sauce table lets you truly customize the flavor profiles of your own bowl. We enjoyed cooking our meats, trying different sauce pairings and with 2 teenagers this was a great way to be out with them interacting not just staring at their phones..lol We have been back 2 times since and enjoy every meal. My family and I went to this place with the highest expectations of Splendid Shabu. Let's just say it was not very splendid...We walked in and someone yelled from across the restaurant y'all just have four, after waiting 5mins. We were then seated in an extra small booth made for children with no elbow room. We didn't really know what we were doing and the server didn't tells us how it worked just handed us four pieces of paper and some pencils. We figured it out on our own and placed the order. After a few mins she returned to the table with four plates of bush piled high fit for four hungry bunnies. After we cooked our meal the beef and chicken resembled old dried punny . We attempted to muster the strength to get down the dirty dish water that they called soup. We tried the miso, the curry, the spicy, and house. Before we could even finished we were rushed into paying our bill of 107 dollars for FOUR people!
