The atmosphere is motivating, and I can see why people enjoy taking classes here. That said, I did want to share one part of my experience that put a damper on the class for me. I briefly checked my phone to send something quick to my sister (which, in hindsight, I probably should have stepped out to do), but I genuinely didn't think it would be an issue since I've never seen a posted rule or signage stating that the studio is phone-free. I was caught off guard when I was called out by name during class in a way that felt more aggressive than necessary. If phone use is discouraged, I completely respect that -- but I think it would be more helpful to clearly communicate expectations beforehand or have signage posted. Especially if this has been an ongoing concern in classes, clarity would help avoid uncomfortable situations for everyone. I've also noticed comments from others in the studio about phone use before, which makes me think this may be a recurring issue from other riders as well. I just wish the approach had been kinder or more private, as being publicly called out took me out of the moment. While I may try a different instructor in the future, I still enjoyed the workout itself, loved the music, and appreciate the overall studio experience.

This review is long overdue, but so well deserved. EWB was an amazing experience. Over the year or…read moreso that I was there, I saw amazing improvements to my physique, posture, strength, and overall health. It was the best shape I'd been in since high school. For starters, the gym itself is small but well-equipped. It doesn't have the bloated feeling of big gyms, yet you can get the same quality of exercise in it that you might there. But what really makes EWB are the trainers. My earlier experience there was with a friend and trainer of mine named Diana, who was super cool and knowledgeable and really helps you enjoy working out. When I went there a couple of years later, I connected with a guy named Jonathan. Super knowledgeable both as a trainer and in anatomy and physiology. He was able to keep my technique safe and appropriate and give explanations for why we did things at all times. I was enjoying my experience so much that I started going up to 4 or 5x a week. That's when I had the pleasure of working with Sara and Jenn. Sara was able to keep working out simple and effective, and she always offered great nutritional advice to make sure that I got the biggest return on my investments. Jenn, meanwhile, gave me much needed help with mobility and provided bodywork to ensure that my body was a well-oiled machine while it endured weekly rigor from both training and work (which was also physical for me). When someone didn't have time to see me, the owner, Nicole, would work with me. She challenges you in a way that makes you feel capable, and I owed a lot of growth in confidence to her during my time there. I would highly recommend this establishment and its personnel to anyone serious about making healthy improvements in their life. I still recommend them to friends and colleagues of mine regularly.

The check-in process was super easy and the people that worked there made sure to get my mother and I accommodated on our bikes. Even though this wasn't my first time cycling, they still helped me out. What I really love about this place is that the instructor came to us before the class started to get to know our names and who we were. And while the class was going on, she would yell out words of encouragement directed to each individual. This really made the experience more personalized since instead of telling "come on everyone you can do this", it was "come on Sarah, you got this, keep pushing". This really motivated me more to push myself during the class. Additionally, I like how its first come first serve in terms of picking your bike here. No need to worry about reserving a specific bike when you can pick whatever bike that you want. I also like how this is in the beginning of PB so you don't have to drive all the way down Garnet just to get to the class, it's pretty much right off the 5. They also have their own parking lot which means no struggling for parking, yay!

I usually feel the same way with second iterations of shops, restaurants and even gyms, but when I heard Edge was opening a second location in La Jolla, I was excited and bewildered because it's such a different community but I knew that the Edge energy needed to be experienced by as many people as possible. My first class at the new location was with Troy and it was amazing! NGL, but the air conditioning is nice and having showers there are so clutch! But the energy and rawness of getting after it on the bike is all Edge family business! To this day, Edge rides are the most challenging yet welcoming spin classes I've ever taken. Most people join for a good sweat and to become healthier, not necessarily to compete or become a pro athlete (although we have a couple of those too). Members are very hospitable. The coaches are terrific, as well. Coach Eric is highly skilled at barbell and Olympic Weightlifting. Coach Alli is very skilled at rowing, gymnastics stuff, and protecting your form. The owner, Coach Brian, is also very friendly, professional, and cares about members and drop-ins alike. This gym has all the equipment you would expect from a box, except it has only one Assault Bike (which I consider a positive)! The programming is systematic and productive for strength and conditioning. Finally, the gym is taking measures to protect everyone from COVID. Classes are capped to 5 people, and there are separate workout areas with personal sanitation bottles and towels. As a member I always come in feeling safe and leave feeling healthier!

Cely intuitively knew when to push me, when to nurture and when to keep me focused on mind body connection. I also appreciate her humor. Always on time. Phil, the head teacher really knows his stuff. He is patient and encouraging, but he pushes you to get the most out of the workout. Location/Facility: Classes here are polar opposites from the big gyms. The instruction is very personal and often feels like a personal training session. The training area is quite small and is literary held in an old converted bank vault. At first, I was concerned the limited facilities would be a drawback. Instead, I've found that the smaller size contributes to the personal-training feel. You cannot get lost in these classes. Vibe: There are no egos here. The vibe is very OB; laid back and relaxed. Everybody is there to get a good workout, period. Instructor: Phil is a great guy. He's an enthusiastic and energetic teacher. He loves Muay Thai and it shows. I don't think I've ever been to a class where he hasn't jumped in and worked with us. He has actual fight experience in the ring, and while his workouts are great exercise they are also practical and great for learning self-defense techniques. Overall, the price is right, the instructor is solid and helpful, the students are cool and the location in OB is convenient if you work or live in the area. Highly recommend.

I've only been training with him for 3 months, but I have already noticed a significant change. Not only has my stamina, coordination, core strength, and balance improved, but I have dropped some weight, too. Gordon is an awesome teacher! Another plus is how he presents drills and routines that build on each other. This really aids in creating muscle memory. Since the classes are Monday through Friday, there are several opportunities during the week to train. He's also reasonably priced and has several payment plans from which to choose. There are a great group of people who train at The VCA, which is a definite plus for me. The teacher creates the environment, and this one is exhilarating.
