I would give Spider Kelly's less than a single star if Yelp would allow me, and here is why.
I went out Friday night with a number of friends to celebrate my 28th birthday, stopping at Mr. Day's and the Clarendon Grill for a bit before heading over to Spider Kelly's. Now, I don't know the Clarendon area that well, so I was trusting the recommendations of my friends when it came to our venues. The first two were good, so I had no reason to distrust them.
We arrive at Spider Kelly's and get in line, waiting and talking and generally having a good time. We got up to the front of the line, showed our IDs, and entered. I held back for a moment when I got inside to make sure everyone got in, and discovered that my friend had not been allowed in because his drivers license and passport had expired. He has a current Visa, but he clearly doesn't carry that around to the bars lest he lose it. At any rate, we were in and he was out, so I tried to gather everyone at the front bar near the door to figure out what we should do.
While at the front bar, a guy - who did not appear to be a bouncer - came up to me and said, "You guys need to move along away from the door." I casually turned to him and said, "Yeah, we're working on it. My friend's ID expired and he didn't get in, so we're trying to figure out what we're doing." Despite alluding to the fact that we would be gone momentarily, and despite our position at the bar, he interrupted me again and replied very curtly, "It doesn't look like you're working on it." I kind of laughed and ensured him that we were, and when he pressed me on it again, I told him to mind his business. I admittedly did not do so in the most gentlemanly of ways, but he was starting to press my buttons.
No more than a second after I said this to the man, the bouncer puts his hand on my shoulder from behind and says, "Get out." I turned to him and very calmly asked, "Seriously?" He replied, "No one talks to him that way. Get out." I said fine, and tried to tell my friends that I was being kicked out of a bar for doing essentially nothing on my birthday, and he more or less forced me out the door. He then told my girlfriend that she had to leave, and put his hands on her coat to remove her.
At this point, I'm livid. I begin to argue with the doorman that I have done nothing wrong and do not deserve to be kicked out of the establishment, to which the bouncer threatened to call the police. I told him to go ahead and call the police, because we had done nothing wrong. My friends walked me down the street to create some space between us while they tried to get our other friends out of the bar. Great, so Spider Kelly's is a haven for irrational Napoleon-complexed bouncers. Time to move on.
We move down the street and get into the line at the Clarendon Ballroom and again wait to get into a bar. As we are standing in line, the same short, bald bouncer from Spider Kelly's comes strutting down the sidewalk towards us. He grabs the bouncer from the Ballroom and points at me, my girlfriend and one of my friends and says, "These three don't get in." The bouncer at the Ballroom lifts the rope and says, "You three, out of line." I had calmed down at this point and calmly asked the Ballroom bouncer why I was being removed from line. He replied that it was because the other bouncer - who at the time, unbeknownst to me because I was speaking with the Ballroom bouncer, was placing his hands on my girlfriend again to remove her from the line on the sidewalk (a public place) - had said so. I asked him why the other bouncer was having me removed from line, and he told me that it was because they ran the security for both buildings. I tried to tell him that I hadn't done anything at the last place, but he wouldn't have it. I asked where, then, we could go that they do not run the security, and he told me, "We own this whole strip. We run the security there, here, and all over this area." I said fine, and then bid him ado in a less than gentlemanly way and stormed off, angered that I and my friends had been removed for doing nothing wrong, really.
I called Spider Kelly's tonight to speak to a manager and was put on hold for over 5 minutes with a constant beep in my ear. I realize that the manager probably doesn't give a rat's ass about what happened to some random person on a Friday night, since they have enough other customers to keep the money rolling in, but I would still like to speak with one nonetheless. I've worked in the restaurant industry and would be appalled if I ever heard that one of my employees had been so rude to a patron. I'm not looking for any sort of reparations or anything like that, but I will say that I will never patronize this establishment unless I have at least a semblance of an apology and the assurance that it will never happen again. I highly doubt I will get that, though. read more
