Called in an order for pickup and the gentleman on the phone was friendly and answered all my questions. I was told 20 minutes and my food was ready the minute I walked in, almost exactly 20 minutes later. The food was also absolutely delicious! I am amending my review after three visits in five months (one was lunch, one dinner, and one a takeout order). The staff is still very helpful and welcoming, but the food deteriorated considerably. Chicken and lamb are very hard, samosas poorly reheated, sag paneer is no longer rich in spinach but green and watery. Everything tastes as if it has been frozen a while ago and then quickly put in a microwave. I loved this place but I don't think that I'll be eating there again. read more

As a vegan I'm always looking for restaurants that serve food I can eat. We chose the lunch buffet toward the end of lunch. The garbanzo bean salad was spiced and very good. As for the rest of the food... not so good. My daughter and I had terrible indigestion after we ate it. Usually that means it wasn't as fresh as it should have been. Order off the menu. We came here for the lunch buffet. Although the service was extremely friendly, they were slow at bringing the food and plates. Often times there was a line of people waiting to get their plates so that they could eat. The selection was limited and the food was not exceptionally good. In terms of meat they really only had chicken. I would not recommend this restaurant for its lunch buffet. read more

The atmosphere is a clash with traditional middle eastern and a modern american. When seated our waiter was very good, he made sure to take care of us, for some reason that's seems to be a rarity these days. I ordered the chicken tikka masala and the meat somosas. They were alright and the tikka masala was good. For some reason the waiter kept trying to push the naan bread which was about $3 or $4 (usually comes free at the places I've been to). I thought the price of the food was a little high , typically I get my middle eastwrn/ Indian food at a lower price. It may be due to location as I don't know the area well. Throughout my meal their phone kept ringing, it was loud and annoying. It's very unprofessional to have something like that going off in the dining atmosphere. I tipped my waiter , and left full. We rolled in last Saturday at 2:15pm and the buffet ends at 2:30 so I can't complain too much. Obviously things on the buffet had been sitting there for a long time and they weren't refreshing it. Things were also warm, not hot but again that's to be expected. I imagine (and hope) the quality around 12:00pm is superb. I was just happy they were willing to seat us even though they were closing it down soon and allowed us to eat. The food was good (not great) but again it was a buffet. I liked the variety of chutneys, much more than you usually get around here. Also the fried mushrooms were yummy too. I wish they had offered soup and pappadum like must Indian buffets do, since Naan tends to have dairy in it and I'm vegan. I also wish they would put labels on the buffet food so you know exactly what is vegan/vegetarian (apparently they do that on the regular menu though). The buffet seemed a little pricey too for a Western Mass meal but maybe that was because their Sat buffet is special? They also need to offer little ramekins so you can take your chutney to the table. I did appreciate all the vegetarian offerings on the buffet though, there was plenty to eat, including a pasta dish? Interesting... Otherwise the decor was fine, service was nice, and everything was clean. A few more folks came in after we sat down, so maybe they should consider expanding their hours to 3:00pm for lunch. read more

Our group got here 15 minutes before the buffet ended so it's hard to judge the freshness of the food. What I had was good, what I expected and there were lots of options. The host and the staff were super nice, accommodating despite us coming in right before they were going to clear everything out and the dining area was sunny, pleasant and not full. We stopped here on a Sunday night after a long day at Mass MOCA. Service was fine. We ordered samosas, which came out room temperature (not cold by any means), but pastry was flaky and very good. We were hungry, so they were fine, but I've had much more flavorful samosas at other restaurants. Condiments were great so this helped. My lamb korma was so stinkin good I wanted to drink the rest of the sauce. My partner had the tandori sampler, and the meat was so so tender and buttery he's probably going to have dreams about it. Excellent Indian food in the NW corner of Massachusetts. We tried the tikki masala with chicken and piled with extra mixed vegetables, garlic naan, and matar paneer. Good flavor and a hint that you can get it spicier if you're into that delightful sweat at the back of the scalp! The place is small and fills quickly. The food tastes great - on this particular evening, the service left something to be desired. No issues other than they appeared to be one server down and had not implemented an efficient strategy for covering all the tables in an organized fashion. read more

If you really love Indian food, you are going to hate this place. Ok, so it is advertised as " Modern" Indian. I wasn't really sure what they meant by that. I just interpreted it to be fusion and that maybe some of the dishes would have influences from other cuisines or perhaps they used some non traditional ingredients. We've had contemporary Indian food in India so I thought that could also be a good thing too. I was looking forward to this. As soon as the meal arrived, I realized it should have been more appropriately called " dumbed down" Indian or " "over salted " Indian. Seems like the only spice they had in their spice rack was salt. The entire meal tasted like it was prepared from Trader Joe's prepackaged foods. ( yeah, I've made the Trader Joe's mistake also!). This place is great! We stopped there on our way through. I asked for a recommendation, as I was so hungry by the hour of the day we stopped I could have ordered anything. Our server recommended a shrimp dish since I am not eating meat right now. I order a mango lassi while we were waiting for our meal. The smells from the kitchen while we waited were amazing! Good thing we ordered naan. When our dishes came out we both looked at each others dish and decided we would split, they looked and smelled so good! We will going back there for sure! Had Sat. buffet and thought it was excellent. Lots of veggie and chicken choices. In fact, more chicken choices than most places. The only thing I would have liked to see is another meat choice but that's probably cost prohibitive. A bit more pricey than I expected but worth it. Two thumbs up to service staff. We have been coming to this restaurant since we moved to town years ago. It is the best Indian food I've found in Berkshire county. We love the restaurant, the food and the staff and I would probably describe it as our favorite local restaurant. Why 4 stars? Well, it isn't the best Indian food I've ever had, but it is good. This was one of the better Indian restaurants we've been too. The samosas were excellent, the curries very good though the Hot-Hot warning for the Vindaloo may have meant Massachusetts hot, not Indian hot. The gulab jamon was served in an ice cream sundae dish so it was a little hard to get the sauce out. The food came out quite quickly once they took our order though they did forget my dad's soup. A disappointing visit to the lunch buffet. When we arrived they were clearly "in the weeds"--two large groups of college students were dining, and we suspect cleaned them out. Still, they never regrouped during our entire meal--there was no sign of naan at the buffet (we had to ask to have a single piece delivered for our party of 4), and half of the items were out. The only item that was well stocked was the pakora, but it was cold, limp, and had clearly been sitting in the steam tray for too too long. Some of the food was excellent, others (such as the stewed okra) were subpar. Underspiced, lukewarm, and watered down tasting. I love Indian food and usually a good Indian buffet. This one is not. To add insult to injury, they were completely out of plates! We used our appetizer plates and for our return visit they kept promising us more plates and then saying "just a few minutes." Not good. Maybe it was a bad day for them, but future diners should be warned. read more

This was the best meal of a week long college tour. Sampled several standard dishes (chicken vindaloo, chicken biryani, rogan josh, sag paneer) as well as nan. The dishes were well and carefully prepared, with balanced spices and depth of flavor. Sag paneer, in particular, was terrific, and the vindaloo was also great. The menu has a good collection of typical dishes (and lots of vegetarian ones) and there was more variety in the breaded than I typically see. The cilantro and garlic nan was delicious, and my family also loved the raisin and nut one. I only wish the Indian and Pakistani restaurants in my neighborhood were as good. read more

My son and I love this place. We have only gone for the lunch buffet and Sunday brunch since it is a buffet and reasonably priced. My son asks to go here every week. They don't always have the same food on the buffet and it is nice to have a variety since we do go fairly often. We really like the people here. We know the owner and server by name and always feel welcome when we walk in the door. The waiter almost always brings a little something extra for my son like a desert or drink. It's the little things like that that make this place special. If you like Indian food, you will like Spice Root. read more
