We had family in town and wanted to find a restaurant that would allow a large group to share multiple dishes, one of our friends suggested Spice n steam. From the outside the building does not look so inviting, but once you step through the front door you are greeted by a very friendly staff. We had a party of 8, they quickly seated us, there were many open tables around 4pm, but within the 1.5 hrs we were there, the location was full without any open setting. They also have a side lounge toward the back of the building. They have ample space for many large groups or just for two. The ceilings and walls hae many asian inspired decorations, the room feels very inviting. Even with the buidling bring right off a main road way, we did not hear any outdoor noise. Their food taste and portions were great, we tend to visit many chinese restaurants, for me and the group I was with we were very impressed to the point of us looking forward to our next visit. We ordered the OG Pork Dumplings (steamed) very tasty, nice dipping sauce, everyone enjoyed the appetizer. We followed by ordering, Kung Pao chicken, Mongolian chicken ,Szechuan Garlic Braised Beef, Orange chicken, House Special sauce green beans, Sweet and Sour pork and a side of egg rolls. We finished most of tht items but took a few things home. Lots of proteins, veggies and a lot of taste throughout each dish. We enjoyed some wine and Sapporo beer with our meal.. They have many Tea and Sake options. The Service was solid considering how quickly the restaurant filled up. They have a private parking lot which made it very convenient, it is within walking distance to many other DT Eugene hotels.

I was looking on Yelp for a place to have lunch in Eugene and Spice N Steam popped up. I had looked for dim sum places there before and finding this was a happy surprise. We got there as it opened. We ordered their hot tea which was a delightful blend of green tea, jasmine, oolong and chrysanthemum!! This is definitely a reorder. We ordered our standard siu mai, har gow, and fried shrimp balls. They were all super delicious!! The siu mai were shrimp and mushroom. I've never had that combo, were a very generous size and amazing. Har gow were, also, delicious. Interestingly, there wasn't a sauce except the soy on the table. They were good and really didn't need one-though, would be nice to have. The fried shrimp balls were decadent. I love the fried wonton crispy on them and inside was succulent shrimp. They had an interesting red dipping sauce. I wasn't a fan but others liked it. I miss the carts being pushed around the dining room and seeing all the delicious options but understand there aren't enough customers for that at one time. The food is excellent and they earned their Best of Eugene award. I would definitely go back and do recommend them. I

TL:DR - A super solid spot for a "smaller" town. Would be a very solid option in any large city. Place was pretty empty for lunch on Sunday, but dim sum does seem available at any time during the week. Shrimp har gow, shu mai, radish cakes, and salt and pepper tofu were all good. The big stand out was the XOXO sauce rice noodles. Perfectly chewy with a great slight crust of xoxo sauce on the outside. Friendly service, slightly below average dim sum prices compared to most cities. ---------------------------------------------------------- I don't get the low rating for this place. Read this is one of the only dim sum spots in town so we decided to give it a shot and were not disappointed. I will say coming from larger cities, walking in on a Sunday for lunch, I was shocked to see this place completely empty. But as far as I can tell, dimsum is not limited to just weekend lunches here. As such, dim sum is just a menu section and not something that is pushed around on carts. We ordered the XOXO Sauce Rice noodles, shrimp har gow (shrimp dumpling), shu mai, radish cakes, and salt and pepper tofu. They were all very solid dishes, nothing you would say "oh, it's good for middle of nowhere." It was legit solid for any city in the US (Chicago, San Fran, etc.) Nothing amazing, but all very very solid. The one dish I was most impressed with was the XOXO Sauce Rice noodles. Super chewy noodles with good flavor, and they stir fried it to perfection where there was the slightest crust of xoxo sauce flavor on the outsides. A great alternative carb that's not rice or even lo mein. Service was on point, friendly and perfect amount of frequency. Prices were about average, if not slightly lower. Most places I expect to pay about $20-$30 a person for dim sum, we did about $50 for two adults and a baby and had some left over for take home. All in all, a super solid spot that Eugene should be very proud of.

Yum! Food was delicious. Their soup dumplings were fresh, soupy, and had a good amount of filling. They stuck to the containers a bit, but they were tasty nevertheless! The eggplant tasted a bit oily, but the texture was really good. The chicken with canton bean sauce was delicious. The place was spacious with cool decor.

I have family in town who wanted to eat Dim Sum and we found Spice 'n' Steam. The menu was quite large with a lot of variety. We ordered several dishes that were all absolutely delicious! The customer service was amazing and our waitress was extremely attentive. This restaurant has a romantic feel. Low lighting and red lanterns on the ceiling. A great place to go for any occasion or gathering. We enjoyed ourselves and will be back to support this business.

Atmosphere was loud and hectic. It was a busy Friday night. Chaotic you might say. Service was efficient? Not a lot of fluff, which was fine. The food was really good! We had egg flower soup (the best I've had in town), pork potstickers (really yummy if somewhat over-gingered), kung pao chicken (really good, a little less spicy than I'm use to, but thankfully, not over-gingered), and braised chicken (this was my least favorite dish. My hubs ate it, thought it was good, but said he liked the kung pao better). I will definitely return, the food was so good and portions were generous.

We heard about Spice n Steam from some friends who really liked it. I looked at the Yelp reviews and was impressed with what I saw. Having lived within walking distance of China Town for a couple years in San Francisco, I was eager to try out what looked like very authentic cuisine. Our group met there at opening time and the atmosphere was very warm and inviting. We were seated and drinks arrived promptly. At each place setting was a small dish with a paper napkin, a fork and genuine engraved chopsticks, not the cheap disposable kind. The term Dimsum really took me back as I hadn't seen or heard the word in decades. Yep, small bamboo baskets or plates with various assortments of delicious bites, just what the appetite ordered! The Vegetable Spring Rolls were a big hit! Very crispy delicate pastry with steaming hot and very fresh veggies that were so fresh they were still crisp, completely vegan and completely acceptable for this carnivore. Pan Fried Pot Stickers were very flavorful. Perfectly seasoned with a hint of soy, the ground pork sausage was very fine and the flavor was not overbearing. The noodle had a very light crisp and held together well. The Sweet and Sour Chicken was perfect with bite size cuts of chicken in a crispy coating with an aromatic glaze of sweet and sour sauce. Bits of sliced peppers and onions rounded out this dish and again, the veggies were so fresh that they still had their crispness. The Thin Egg Noodle with Chicken was also very good. I really liked how the flavor was rich yet hard to define and there was a generous amount of chicken. On one hand it was almost like a beef broth flavor, but then again, more of a light soy.. hard for me to distinguish but it was very light and tasty. The Baked Bbq Pork Buns were also very unique. These unassuming little rolls will knock your socks off! They were like small hot Hawaiian Sweet Bread rolls. When you bite into one, the steam and aroma of barbecue comes out and there is some very flavorful pulled pork inside. The meal and the service were excellent, but the check was a bit of a tangled web. We did ask for a split check for two couples. We were told 'no problem, I'll do it at the register'. Well the check was combined on the ticket and left us scratching our heads trying to figure it out. You see, the check was very confusing and mostly in Cantonese! There was an English translation as well, but after some back and forth with the waiter over trying to figure who owes what, we finally got it sorted out. That was the only bump in an otherwise fantastic meal of authentic Chinese food.

This has been "our spot" ever since we nervously dropped off our son at UO fall 2020. We dined there every time we visited and brought our son and his friends. We especially enjoyed XO noodles, soup dumplings, braised pirk, and tripe! During one of our visits, we noticed that they were building out the back area. My husband spoke with John and asked if we can host our son's graduation party in that area if it's done by then. Fortunately for us, work was completed late last year. So, on June 17, we hosted lunch for 40 people. Things were a bit hectic and we failed to take pictures of the food. Suffice it to say, everyone raved about the food, the service, and the space! Big thanks to John and the staff for being our spot, from beginning to end of our son's UO experience! SCO!

Probably the best dim sum place in Eugene. Great variety and number of items on the menu. Only tried some dim sum items, but since everything we tried tasted pretty good, will order some entrées next time. Went around 6:30 pm on a Friday night, but it wasn't too empty or crowded, which is pretty ideal to me. Friendly service, interesting stylish decor, but the bathrooms were a little excessively warm and could be better maintained. Our table was a bit warped and a little bit shaky, but overall happy with Spice'n Steam and will return! read more

Glad to see there's a good dim sum place to satisfy my cravings! I came by and was promptedly seated. I ordered Shrimp Dumplings, Shumai, Lotus Wrap, and the Baked BBQ Pork Buns. Everything was freshly made and came out piping hot. The only thing that deters me a little is the price as it's more expensive than the dim sum joints I've been too in other cities. I did enjoy everything and would come back to try more items. read more

So I've never been here before I hop on their webpage and place an order. It says they must text me a code to confirm after I have picked out my items so I enter the code. I then get an order confirmation page and also get an order confirmation to my email. I ordered at 8:17 PM and they close at 9 o'clock I thought that was reasonable I wasn't trying to tick anybody off. So I go in about a quarter till nine when my order was supposed to be ready the girl has no record of it. She's not acting very helpful or like she cares to be there at all. She asked how I placed it? I said through your website. She said no how did you place it ? I said excuse me I don't understand? She said GrubHub etc. I repeated I placed it through the page on your website the big link that says order online. I'm not sure why she had to have an attitude and drilled me on that considering I kept offering to show the order confirmation. She says she will have to check with the kitchen to see if they can still make the order and I said excuse me I placed the order and I have the order confirmation would you like to see it? She said no. I said is there a manager here would they like to see it? she said no. Gosh I'm so sorry you have to work I mean I worked all day and just wanted to eat a meal while I'm holding my one-year-old in my arms who will be taking up the rest of my evening thank you for taking my dinner away I will never return and the girl who " helped" me at the register should not be employed anywhere if she's going to act like that. I believe if a customer places an order and can show proof of it that you should not say well let me check with the kitchen and see if they can make it. You took the order, make the order, shame on you. After all that she asked me if I wanted the kitchen to make the order I looked at her and laughed and walked out I thought it was a little bit late for normal customer service at that point. But I am happy to never return. read more

Dim sum was good, they obviously have staffing problems as the service was pretty bad and chaotic for a week night, imagine the weekend is a ****show. Don't expect more than one drink and any water refills, probably why we saw some much take out. Doubt I would go back. read more

This is my #1 spot to order takeout. We order food from here at least 3 times a month. The pork buns, amazing. The soup dumplings, amazing. The custard buns, amazing. Also, Spice 'n' Steam has by far the best orange chicken around. It is extremely tender and delicious chicken, with the best orange sauce I've ever had. We order the same thing ever time and it's extremely reasonably priced. We have only had positive experiences here, and the staff is very friendly as well. My boyfriend and I will always be a supporter of this restaurant!! read more

We have gotten food from here numerous times. This time the orange chicken was dry and tough with very little sauce. The rest of our food was pretty good. They had it ready in a timely manner but DID NOT follow the instructions I had placed in the app. Nothing too difficult- just labeling food because it was going to multiple friends houses. read more

We have eaten here numerous times. The food is very good. I love their egg foo young, pot stickers and selection of dim sum. There is quite a variety for everyone's taste. When ordering for delivery give them at least 1 1/2 hours during the busy times. I highly recommend them. read more

I've been coming here since it opened a few years ago and I will tell you this is the best Chinese food in the area. The owner is a very friendly man who knows his quality Chinese food. The menu is affordable, but not cheap. Worth every penny. I order the Mongolian beef or pork, the Szechuan chili boil (spicy) with fish, or the cumin lamb. The potstickers to start are to die for made from scratch. The owner took the time to explain everything that's gluten free for me so that I was sure what's safe to order. Try it! Lots of bland tasting food. I ordered 60 dollars or more worth and the only thing that was good was the duck. Some things are most likely not house made like pork steam buns because I found the exact same ones in store pre-frozen. Shumai was chewy filled with Gristle or whatever and tasted horrible.(Like maybe it was pre-frozen.) Chaozhou dumplings weren't horrible...just no taste. Soup broth dumplings actually had some taste..but most were broken over cooked falling apart. Lotus seed buns were dry. I really wanted some dim sum and this was a big let down. Would only give 1 or 2 stars but the duck is the only reason I give 3. read more

I have eaten here twice. Both times were a disappointment. I think it's severely overpriced for the (poor) quality of food you receive. The last time I ordered take out: chicken lettuce wraps. The flavor was off-putting and was extremely greasy. Yuck! read more

I've tried this place 3 times over the years and this last time has convinced me this place is not worth my business. The first was in person not long after they opened. The food was only so-so - the best adjectives I could apply were bland, and oddly-textured. The second was via delivery. We had heard from someone that, while their dimsum was not so great, the full menu dishes were better. So we gave it a try. Most of it was just ok (green beans, cumin lamb to name a few) but I was quite happy with their peking duck. This last time, remembering how pleased I was with their peking duck, I ordered it again with a few other dishes. The other dishes were unmemorable but the peking duck was absolutely terrible. Not only was the duck a fatty mess, roughly 3/4 of the pieces sent were just bone (ribs, neck, leg-joint). Even the meaty pieces had bone bits in it. It was frankly inedible. So either they no longer know how to make peking duck (bad) or they thought that they could unload a lot of crap on a delivery order (worse). Either way, their only redeeming feature, in my book, is gone. I would recommend eating somewhere else. read more

Went to spice and steam and oh it was so good. Cant believe it has lower reviews. It's so so so so good. Forgot phone at home so no pics but the hand pulled beef noodles, baked bbq steamed buns, soup dumplings and oh my goodness the szechuan hot oil dumpling thingies. Basically everything was so outstanding. Even the chow main was great. Go there. Do it now I tell ya! read more

I finally went to the NEWEST & HOTTEST dimsum place in Eugene that everyone talked about! Aaaaaand it was below average.. The location isn't bad but their awkward parking lot and terrible road texture?? Oh man. Apart from the exterior, interior is actually contemporary and chic! Interior itself can compete with other fancy restaurants in pdx! Some parts of the building is still remodeling, but this place is coming together. It took awhile to be seated, it wasn't busy at all, no one was at the door. There were approximately five servers active on the floor, with total of 5 tables, maybe. Their menu were just plain white papers stapled together (LOL) and geez. Everything is over priced! So freaking expensive!!!! I ordered 4 items of their dim sum menu, and mapo tofu. It didn't take that long to get my food. Every dish I had was average. Maybe shrimp and chicken shu mai were above average. When I was finished with meal, I patiently waited for my bill. Waited and waited.. no one came... the restaurant wasn't even busy and none of the servers seemed to care about bringing the bill. Overall, my experience at Spice & steamed was 2.5 stars.. long story short; PRICY, terrible service, average food, need a lot of improvements. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by the ambiance of the restaurant The all day dim sum menu was diverse and my selections were delicious. I prefer a rolling cart menu format, but I didn't retreat anything ordered. The wrap on the shrimp rolls were delightfully crispy and the pork buns tasted super fresh. It's hard finding actual dim sum in Eugene, but Spice & steam has been my go-to! I swear every time we order food from Spice & steam we order so much food! And it's just 2 of us . My go-tos are the house special greens, shrimp dumplings, pan fried noodles (the mixture of crispy & soft noodles is just the best), ham sui gok (my favorite! Is sweet & chewy aka like mochi), egg foo yong, and sweet & sour chicken. It's cheaper to order as takeout in their website or by calling if you decide to eat at home. read more

The food quality has really reduced in the past year or so. The Kung pao chicken was greasy and so was the Asian vegetable, A-choy. Ugh, vegetables should never be greasy. So my original 2017 rating gets a star knocked off. Their unusual cold salad menu is their saving grace from falling to a 3. I sure hope things improve soon. read more

I got a chance to go again for lunch on Saturday 1/14/17. Between my girlfriend and I, we ordered 7 items + tea and it came out to $40 not including tip. As other reviews have commented, I think these prices are simply too high; $20 per person for brunch/lunch in Eugene seems a bit unsustainable. Although some of the dishes are indeed tasty, the overall quality of the food hasn't hit its stride (and isn't comparable to dim sum place in Portland). The texture of the minced beef noodle roll was particularly bad (both the noodle, and the potentially undercooked beef). Unfortunately I don't see them lowering their prices; they're the only dim sum place in Eugene and have no competition. Hopefully over time the quality of their food improves enough to make it worth it, but I'm not holding my breath. read more

My wife and I went here a few weeks ago, it was just decent. Not really what I was hoping for. Ambiance - It almost looks like a converted dance hall - there are some light fixtures and speakers that make it look like it's supposed to be rented out for big parties that want to do karaoke. Not super clean or well-kept, there are some chipped paint spots and light covers that have come undone in spots. I don't really care that much but some people might. Nothing really memorable about it, but it's slightly dark and not too noisy. Food - Sadly, the worst part. The braised pork was alright, but tasted a little off or old. The flavor was fine but almost overpowering. I also had the soup dumplings, which were pretty good, and the beef ribs. The ribs specifically were terrible. Mostly sharp bone fragments, fat, chunks of marrow, oil, and basically no actual edible meat. You could tell this was just leftover stuff they made into a dish, a waste of $6. The prices themselves weren't anything to write home about. I should have got the fluffy barbecue pork dumpling. My wife enjoyed the spring rolls and the soup she had. Service - Just adequate. The staff were friendly but they didn't come by very often, and it took a long time for us to get out check and then get our card run. The food took a while to come out even though we were one of the first people to come for dinner. Overall, just fine. My wife liked it more than I did, we might go back, but I'll probably order entirely different dishes. read more

Hot and sour soup is one of the best I have had and I lived in Hong Kong. The dumplings were large but overall selection was small. Shumai were very good, but the soup dumplings came in small "tins" which broke the shell as you were taking them out. Great place in downtown Eugene. The food was great and the service was fast. Having lived overseas in Asia, I can safety say that this was very good Asian food. Highly recommended. Parking is little light and pricing is a little high. Definitely a date night location, although kids would be ok to bring, it was not specifically a kid friendly place. read more

Came in mid-afternoon on the weekend and the place was busy. We were seated immediately and received our food ~10 mins after ordering. We ordered the spicy and sour beef noodle soup, veggie dumplings, and scallion pancakes. There is an option to adjust the spice and numbing levels to your dishes. The food came out steaming. The veggie dumplings were flavorful and the wrapping was just thick enough to make 10-dumplings a hearty meal. The taste profile is similar to what you'd find in Northern China, and there is chili oil/vinegar/soy sauce at the table for you to make your own sauce. Scallion pancakes were deep-fried and on the thin side. They were more oily than the homemade ones I'm used to, but the crunch and flavor on them were nice. The sour and spicy beef noodle soup (opted spicy and numbing) was yummy. You can tell the noodles were handmade and they had a good bite to them. The beef was tender, the bok choy was a nice refreshing balance to the bold flavors of the dish, and the tea egg was a nice addition. The soup was quite sodium-heavy and oily, but the flavor was quite authentic and still yummy with the numbing spice kicking in towards the end. The interior is clean and has a viewing window at the front where you can see dumplings being made in real time.

Glad they were open for a late lunch. Because I arrived to eat lunch at 2:30pm. The service was friendly and attentive. The Jasmine tea was delicious as was the egg tart. The vegetable noodle dish $11.xx provided a large portion (I appreciate large portions) of the small egg noodles (chow mein to most Americans) flavored with slivered onions and slivered cabbage. There were no other vegetables. The Dim Sum Shrimp Dumplings had some kind of essence of shrimp-something (paste?) with some real shrimp parts too. The Vegetable "Spring" Rolls arrived deep fried. I am happy to see a new modern Chinese restaurant in Eugene. They may have to tailor the dishes to be more pleasing to the American palette if they are going to survive. For example, I expected the vegetable-noodle dish to contain at least 30% fresh vegetables and 70% noodle, not 2% vegetables 98% noodles. We stopped by Spice 'n' Steam on our way through Eugene and were blown away by the hospitality. Our server made us hot sake (even though it wasn't how they typically serve it), and went out of their way to prepare tofu in a way we were accustomed to back home. If you're looking for the perfect Peking duck, look no further than Spice N steam! I had the pleasure of trying their Peking duck dish, and it was truly exceptional. The presentation was stunning. The duck was carved tableside, with the skin crispy and glistening, but the taste was even better than the presentation. Delicious!!! Agree with others - on par with San Francisco and LA dim sum. 100% Authentic Asian Food! Favorites: BBQ Pork Boa and egg rolls. The Kung Poa was good. The hot and sour soup was amazing. Pro Tip: ask for hot mustard and other condiments when you order because service is exceedingly slow but hey, given the way things are today, we were lit to have meal out and delivered to our table! read more

So good!! Love this restaurant. Their food is delicious. The green beans sautéed with garlic are to die for, I crave them all the time. So many options on their menu. Great for dates or business lunches. Take out is also an options! Their portions are so big, you'll probably leave with leftovers. A must try in Eugene! read more

The service was great and everything we tried was delicious. The attendants were helpful and offered suggestions but were not overbearing. The food was prepared quickly. The soup dumplings... wow! Also haven't found any place in Eugene that offers jellyfish salad too! Eugene really needed an authentic and hearty Chinese restaurant.
