3.5 stars ! Extra 0.5 star for being the only Indian place open till 10 in Canmore :) After struggling with eating sandwiches and pizzas, we wanted to have Indian food and we came across this place. Place is big and service was decent for it being non-busy at the time of our visit. Naan: garlic nan was so so but regular nan was better Shahi Paneer: little too sweet but good texture and creaminess Dal makhni: was good and probably best amongst ordered items Veg Biryani : not authentic dum biryani but more like pulav rice Price : very reasonable after rip off prices in Banff area for everything :) Definitely give it a try if u r craving Indian good read more

My family and I visited this establishment in late June on our summer vacation in the Canadian Rockies. First impression is that this place was converted from an old diner or another concept not originally intended to be an indian restaurant. Regardless of the interior decor, the customer service was fantastic and the food did not disappoint. I was an instant fan of their Chicken Tikka Masala and Butter Chicken, but the and Chicken Korma could use a bit more sweetness to it.. Each dish was more than flavorful and the chicken was very moist. WE also ordered the garlic naan bread which was a 3/5 mostly due to the fact that it could of been cooked a bit less and a bit more garlic. My family and I had a great time at this establishment and would definitely recommend a visit to others while in the area. Also, the bear out front is quite amusing to my child. read more

Great for family style dining with good-sized, shareable portions. The Butter Chicken, Coconut Chicken, Chicken Masala and Beef Vindaloo were all delicious! I had my first taste of a Mango Lassi (yogurt drink) and thought it was just okay. Service was friendly but just a bit slow despite a fairly empty restaurant at lunchtime. read more

Seems like a converted Pizza Hut. Located on the main cross street. Walked in to see the servers in Indian tunics, playing old school Indian/bollywood music. Place was clean and well organized. Service by our very pretty Indian server was okay. She was quick and moved swiftly, but she could have smiled more or showed a bit more of a pleasant attitude. Food is okay. their biryani was nice, their vegetables were decent. Pakoras were refried. the menu was basic as the main dishes werent unique...pretty standard stuff. Quantities were excellent. Their beverage menu looked cheap. $5 for a beer. A good option for Indian food, but clearly not the best. That being said, the place was packed on a Friday night. I would come again, but would try other Canmore restaurants out first. read more

Enjoyed our experience at Spice Hut. The portions were all a bit small; we left with no leftovers which is a bit unusual of a Indian restaurant. The papadom was SO small, like maybe two pieces tops. This is possibly the worst indian restaurant i have ever been. Nothing seems to be right at this place. Food was below par and service was terrible. Management is even worse. The only reason I'm giving 3 stars is because when we get service, the food is phenomenal. However, this evening we were seated, received water, and sat with menus closed for 20 minutes, while 4 servers failed to take care of us; one of only 8 tables seated in the dining room. We're staying in Canmore for a summer holiday and Spice Hut is across from our hotel so we wandered over there. We're from New York and have eaten Indian food in Jackson Heights, home of a large South Asian community, and we were VERY pleasantly surprised by this place. The restaurant is enormous (at least by East coast standards). We ordered the vegetable pakoras, matar paneer, and chicken masala. I should say first that the service was excellent, and the folks at Spice Hut go the extra mile: chilled beer glasses, warmed plates, etc etc. The pakoras were great: not greasy at all, and very vegetable-y. The only downside was that the tamarind sauce it came with was pretty thick and sweet, rather than more liquid and sweet-and-sour. The portion was huge: eight pakoras for the two of us. In terms of the mains, I wasn't thrilled about having to pay extra for rice and bread, but rice for one person was actually a soup-bowl-full, and enough for two. So if you're there with a friend, I'd suggest one of you ordering rice and then the two of you sharing. The naan was tasty, and brushed with ghee. The dishes themselves were great. Everything was very fresh: the chicken masala sauce tasted of sauteed onions and tomatoes (in crappier Indian places it's pretty ketchuppy). The paneer in the matar paneer was tender and crumbly; I wouldn't be surprised if they made it themselves. We asked for medium spice and that was exactly what we got. The portions were very large: we could have fed a third person on the appetizer and two entrees. We ate about 2/3 of both of them -- our waitress was worried that we didn't like the food, but we made it clear that it was just too much for the two of us. Enormous portions seem to be a hallmark of the US and Canadian West; clearly we have not been trained to put away that much food in one sitting. read more

I am East Indian and have grown up eating food from its various regions. When I travel, I love going to Indian restaurants as well. So, I have a lot of experience eating out in such establishments, and not just home made cooking. Some positives: Spice Hut is neat and clean and very spacious. Food was brought out quickly. Some OK's: The food was alright. Neither very good and neither bad. Some disappointments: The service. During our meal, we were never asked if we needed more water or asked if the meal was alright. We had to get up on our own and ask for rice and additional naan's. Also... as is often the case in Indian restaurants, we asked for some sliced onions. This was promptly served along with a few chili peppers and a bit of cut lemons (maybe a quarter). That part was fine. When the bill was presented, we were charged $2 for the onions. In all my years of eating out at Indian restaurants across North America and Europe (and India). I have NEVER been charged for such a thing. I told the server that I would be happy to share that info with the owner. She explained that she was also the manager, so I was talking to the right person. When I expressed my surprise at the charge - she responded, Well I suspect the owners think that they gave onions and therefore must charge for them so as to cover expenses. I explained that giving the $2 was not going to break me, but I had never experienced such a charge. In my mind, that's when the business says, you know what, we'll take the $2 off as any ill will or negative word of mouth is not worth the toonie. No such decision here. I have worked in both the restaurant industry as well as retail. It takes a lot to motivate me to write reviews of this nature. I am far more apt to share positive feedback with people. However, it's the little gestures, such as this which get me. BTW, I thought that having the female serving staff wear Indian wear was nice. I'm assuming the male host must normally wear Indian wear as well and that the night we were there was an anomaly. read more

Absolute garbage. I have eaten Indian food all over the world and this is by far the most non authentic I have ever had. The butter chicken tastes like tomato soup with chicken in it. The portions were small. 15 dollars for a bowl of tomato soup and no rice. The naan bread was chewy and burnt tasting. The "garlic naan" was awful tasting as if they just spread garlic powder all over it. I would never eat there again. Even if they paid me to do it. Save your money and get the butter chicken spice from save on foods and make it yourself. I've had better at my own kitchen table made on my stove. read more
