Stopped by Spice Hut for the first time tonight, and it definitely won't be our last. We ordered the butter chicken, eggplant bharta, vegetable samosas, and rice. Everything came out fresh, hot, and full of flavor. Also, the garlic naan was perfect. The butter chicken was excellent, and the eggplant bharta was probably my favorite dish of the night--it had a great smoky flavor and was something a little different from what I usually order. The vegetable samosas were perfectly crispy and made a great starter. The service was friendly, and everyone made us feel welcome. My favorite meal in Canmore! It's a little unassuming off the downtown paths but be sure to check this place out. It's near a hotel so a large parking spot and the restaurant itself has a ton of space. Our group ended up ordering to go but service was friendly and quick. Regrettable. Ordered the tandoori platter to go. When I arrived, only one lady was seating customers, taking phone orders and orders from tables, bringing plates from the kitchen. Not sure why they don't hire more staff? As for the meal itself, the green dyed "yogurt" masquerading as mint chutney dyed my fingers green, the beef kebab was the frozen kind you can buy from restaurant depot. The chicken and prawn was ok, naan was ok too. If East Indian food is the specialty, not sure why they didn't have momos or other Eastern dishes. I guess most tourists are only familiar with North Indian menus. If you know your Indian food, give this a skip. read more

Spicy Hut impressed my group of five as we at a family style meal. We ordered a variety of dishes, including a mid-spiced buttered chicken, two medium-spiced coconut beef curries, a lamb biryani, saffron basmati rice, tradition naan, and garlic naan. The flavors were absolutely outstanding, as evidenced by a moment of please a pleasure from the group. The spice level was perfectly balanced, offering a pleasant kick without being to overwhelming. If you prefer spicy food, you can take it up a notch to "spicy plus" the portions were also generous, leaving us with some enough leftovers for breakfast the next day. This place was in our neighborhood and was open late. We went in and ordered the chicken malai tikka, kadhai chicken, and rotis! Loved the taste of the food. The tikkas were soft and cooked to perfection in the tandoor. The kadhai chicken was also delicious, not oily which I liked. My only dislike would be the green colored coriander chutney. Whenever I go to Banff, I always eat at this East Indian restaurant. It's located in heart of Canmore. The ambience is relaxing and inviting. They also offer take out. It is little pricey, but you can't complain as it's a premium tourist place. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. They always ask for your spice level and let you know about the dishes. This time we ordered takeout. We took Palak Paneer, garlic naan and tandoori fish combo( it comes with grilled fish marinated in Indian spices, rice, butter sauce and salad ). Both dishes were fresh and flavourful and even naan were crispy from outside and soft from inside. The lady at the counter also gave me disposable cutlery. Excellent food, quick service, cozy interior. It was our first time here and we were starving. It was 8pm on a Tuesday in February, so not many others were dining at the time - luckily for us. In less than an hour we were back in our hotel room, totally satisfied. We chose to order dishes to share - butter chicken, chicken curry, palak paneer, plus garlic naan and basmati rice. The food was out within 15-20 minutes of ordering. Piping hot and delicious. The garlic naan was that perfect blend of chewy and crispy - perfect for soaking up all the extra sauce. For my husband, the chicken curry was the showstopper. We ordered all of our dishes medium spicy and this was the one where the spices stood out the best. I adored the palak paneer - creamed spinach with cubes of salty paneer cheese. It had a lovely balanced flavour and was beautiful as a side to the spicier chicken dishes. The butter chicken was good - tender chicken, nicely spiced. Of the three, it ranked third for us, though still very good. FYI you do need to order rice and naan separately. The naan pieces are quite large. We ordered one each, though if we weren't planning on leftovers (ie if we planned to eat all of the dishes), it would have been fine to share a piece. As it was, we have enough leftovers of rice, butter chicken, and palak paneer for lunch tomorrow (even after totally stuffing ourselves). We didn't try dessert, though they had a few traditional options. Honestly there was simply no room! Highly recommend if you love Indian food and are in Canmore. Let me tell you everything you need to know about this place. First off, I want you to know I am a true Yelp believer. If I see something with only 3.5 stars, I'm not likely to go there unless I'm desperate. But let me tell you something: the 3.5 star ratings for this restaurant don't give the place the credit it deserves. I would rate this place a 4 or 4.5 star restaurant. Here's why: Pros: 1. AMAZING FOOD. My friends and I all appreciate good food. We came to Canmore for a spring break trip, and needed to find somewhere to eat quick. We saw the Spice Hut and we were amazed. The food tasted as closely to authentic Indian food as you can in a place like Canmore. The chicken literally melted in our mouths, and the giant piece of naan comes out fresh and flaky on the outside, but light on the inside. Everything about the food was incredible. 2. Very knowledgeable waitress. Our waitress is a local who said she came to the restaurant regularly for 6 years before getting a job there. She has tried almost everything on the menu. If you want more detail about what makes the dishes different, ask your waiter or waitress. The menu is very simple and doesn't explain well enough what makes each dish unique, so if you want to make sure you get something you appreciate, just ask. It usually has to do with what spices the dish has as well as the way it is prepared. Cons: They charge you for rice and naan. It's really not a huge deal considering how great the food is, but most Indian places include that in the overall price of the dish. It wasn't that much more (I think the rice was $0.60 and the naan was $2.50 per piece). This could be a pro for some people who don't actually want the naan or the rice with their dish, and don't want to have to pay for it. Extra bonus: we accidentally left our leftovers at the restaurant, and they saved it for us rather than throwing it away! The waitresses there know how valuable the food is. So, there you have it. If this place didn't charge extra for rice then I would have given it 5 stars, which is saying a lot. Friendly staff, decent decor and okay food. The server and staff were very friendly and accommodating. The food was fresh, although wasn't authentic. That said, It was great to have an Indian meal option in a small town like Canmore. We had their Kadhai Paneer which was spelled "karahi " on the menu, Chana masala and butter roti (Their Naan breads have egg in them hence we couldn't try those). Paneer gravy was partially cooked with onion overload and the Chana in Chana masala was a bit undercooked. Rotis were good, they stinged on the butter for our first order, second order was better. Best part of the meal was their Rasmalai, not sure if they made it or was pre made - but was quite good. Overall, quality of food did not match the price (Specially coming from California, were you get best food for dirt cheap prices) The fourth star is for the kitchen staff who served us an extra roti after they had closed kitchen for the day and the server who gave us a complimentary Mother's Day dessert. Some of the best Indian food we have had in a very long time. The dishes were prepared to taste with care. The Aloo Gobi was mostly caulifower with few potatoes, fresh and cooked just enough, not to mushy. The Mint Chicken Tandoori Tiki was suburb, served on rice and we loved the mint sauce and the tandoori sauce. Nice light salad dressing on salad of lettuce, tomates and cucumbers. The Veggie Pakora was so rich and made even better with the sweet sauce. The waitress was very sweet and we enjoyed our early lunch on outside in the sun. Perfect! read more

I was here on a Thursday evening in September. Not busy and could sit wherever. I am used to Indian food in Vancouver. This place put some Indian joints in Vancouver to shame. I ordered the Chicken Jalfrezi and two vegie samosas. The Veggie samosas were very savoury with lots of cumin and spice. The Jalfrezi was amazing. I ordered Medium spicy and received a real treat. Amazing flavour for an Indian place in Canmore. Naan was excellent and looked very home made. The only down side and reason for the loss of star was that the waitress would not substitute a Roti for the Naan. I realize the Naan was good but they should have some flexibility with the bread. Roti is usually cheaper or same price. Perhaps something owner should look at. All in all if I am going through Canmore its a repeat for sure read more

So I can't comment on how authentic everything is because to be honest I have never been to India and don't eat a lot of Indian food. So take that into mind when reading this. We went here with three of our local friends since a new restaurant that serves something other than typical Canadian mountainy fair is mildly exciting. First impression was 'dear goodness this is still a Smitty's!' The decor hasn't been changed at all with the restaurant change over, which, although understandable, is a bit comical. The menu was a bit overwhelming, blingy, and had some lovely little spelling errors (and for being part of a chain was a bit surprising). The service was good, very attentive and answered any questions we had. We were given a scale of spiciness for each of our dishes and tried to chose according to our preferences. This is of course difficult not knowing if this is 'authentic spicy' (in which my tongue is still scarred from my time in Thailand in which I would ask for 'no spice' and still feel my tongue burning off despite having a pretty decent spice tolerance) or 'Canadian spicy' (so, if you can feel a little burn that's about as spicy as you can get). We all agreed upon getting our food that it was more running along the authentic spicy scale. The naan was delicious (and shaped like bicycle seats as one friend pointed out and what could possibly be wrong with that?), I am glad my boyfriend and I chose to split a bowl of rice as that was as much as we needed. They actually ask you how much spice you want in your food on a scale of 1-5. And they punch in your order on a ipad. That was good to see. Neat place. Tasty food. Quick service. Respectful staff. Was good to see the owner go to tables asking customers if everything was fine. I won't say all the food items are 100% authentic Indian style.. some are tuned to suit North American palates. We ordered the vegetable and fish pakoras to start. They were ok. Then we ordered the Bhindi Masala, Channa, Karahi paneer, and Veg Jalfrezi. Also naam, rice and raita. The raita was about a 2oz serving- what a joke! We would ask our server for something (eg. Ketchup for pakoras) and she would either forget or bring it when we were already done. If we asked for a refill for water she would say sure and leave before we could ask for napkins too. Ordered two 7up and wanted a Coke too but she left before we could finish, lol! My hubby and I planned a little getaway to Canmore for our anniversary and were having a heck of a time looking for a place for dinner. We just didn't feel like an upscale pub on this particular night. During the drive back towards the hotel, we spotted Spice Hut. Indian food is our fav, and having had our wedding reception at an Indian restaurant, this was the perfect place to stop. I don't believe the spice hut building was initially an Indian restaurant, so the decor seemed a little "off" in terms of ambiance, but that all faded away when the food arrived. We had the Aloo Gobi, Daal, Chicken Jalfreezi with garlic naan and papadums (yum!). The aloo gobi was delicious, with more sauce & spice than typical from Northern Indian restaurants. The daal was extremely tasty and spicy as well. I would likely not order the jalfreezi again as it lacked the depth of flavour the other dishes presented - but was still good. If you're looking for something that is not the norm while dining in Canmore, I would highly recommend Spice Hut. read more

Walked over from our hotel on a Saturday night (around 6pm). Wasn't too busy yet, big restaurant with lots of seats. We ordered many dishes, they were all delicious and price was reasonable for Canmore. Appreciated that you can alter the spice levels on most dishes. Kids LOVED it. Would NOT recommend their sides (raita, chutney, etc) they were terrible. Chutney was a puree and bland.
