This restaurant looks to be loved by the local community. I walked in late afternoon on a Friday and it was packed. Fortunately, they had some outdoor seating available. Due to the packed restaurant, it took some time to get the waiter's attention, but he gave good recommendations and we didn't have to wait too long for the food to arrive. They gave a lot of cheese in the Kadai Paneer (red dish) and I loved the sweet and slightly tangy tomato base. The Saffron Special Chicken Curry (green dish) leaves a spicy and slightly dry mouthfeel, but the chicken itself is not dry. Small Indian restaurant in downtown Banff on Wolf St. Went on a Sunday night and the place was doing good business, but we didn't need to wait for a table. Tables on both sides of the wall with booth bench seating. They also have a bar in the back corner so you can order drinks. The menu has a pretty good variety of items. I ordered a mango lassi to sip, and it tasted like the mango lassi I remember. Nice consistency and sweet mango flavor. Next, I got an order of garlic naan. For $5, you get 3 pieces that are pretty substantial. Nice fresh out of the oven, with a nice garlic aroma and some crisped up spots. For mains, I got their tandoori chicken biryani. It's two leg quarters (2 thighs and 2 drumsticks) of tandoori chicken on a bowl of biryani. The chicken was really good. The biryani was very flavorful. Couldn't finish all of the rice since I ordered the naan. Total was less than $40 which was quite reasonable. read more

We happened upon Saffron after hiking a couple miles up Tunnel Mountain. It was pretty late in the evening and every place in town had a wait but we easily walked into Saffron and were seated immediately. Our server was warm and attentive and answered any questions we had about the menu. We ordered chicken and beef samosas as well as the butter chicken and chicken tika massala with garlic naan and coconut rice. The food came out quickly and was super hot. The samosas were hot, flaky and soooo super flavorful. We had them with a sweet sauce and another green creamy sauce that really added another element to the flavor. The butter chicken was creamy and the chicken was sooo tender (the name speaks for itself). The chicken tika masala was packed with flavor and was my favorite of the two. The garlic naan just added the finishing touch to our meal, as we used it to sop up the yummy sauces. read more

Tried this restaurant with my husband on our trip to Banff. We started off with Masala Papad. Few papads were fine however few were stale. We then had Veggie Noddles and Chicken Fried Rice. The food wasn't that great and was below average. I even could some smell coming out of the noodles as if the vegetables weren't washed properly. The service sucks as we had to flag the server down multiple times. First for asking for ketchup and soya sauce, and then for the boxes as she wasn't attentive at all and gave us just two boxes however we requested for three. She didn't give us a bag either and we had to ask another server to hand us the bag for carrying the boxes. Spare yourself from this place! I'm surprised this place has this many stars as I found the food to be below average in flavor and presentation, and the service was not good. We got seated right away, but then it took over 15 mins for someone to take our orders after making multiple eye contact with staff. We ordered the AVOCADO JHALMURI to start and please look at the picture of what they have a picture of on their menu and what they served. The avocado that was somewhere mixed into this, tasted like a week's old guacamole that was going bad! We politely sent it back! We tried getting past the unappetizing look of it, because we had just finished a 15 mile hike, but not even starving, could we force ourselves to eat. The second thing was the lambt gosht, that was overpowered with what tasted just like one seasoning, so therefore not balanced! There are two gosht on the menu and when asked what's the difference between the two, we were told "one is with regular seasoning." Only that's not a good explanation of the food you are serving. We got two different naan bread, and even the naan tasted like plain flavorless naan that lacked even a pinch of salt and then sprinkled with dried rosemary on it. We ended up leaving after we also noted that in the bathroom was a used water bottle that was sitting on the sink that is clearly used as a makeshift bidet. Banff is beautiful, with a lot of restaurants. I would not recommend here unfortunately. read more

Fantastic hidden gem of a restaurant here in Banff! My husband doesn't even like Indian food and was willing to give this place a try. He came in with an open mind and has changed his mind! Everything we tried at Saffron was tasty and heavy handed with spices. Absolutely delicious! What we ordered: Lamb Korma - Creamy, spicy, and the lamb was very tender! Also, it is a big plus when the lamb is not gamey. Favorite dish of the night! Chicken Tikka Masala - Juicy chicken and spicy with a hint of sweetness stew/sauce. Garlic Naan - Homemade, hot, and fresh with the perfect amount of garlic. What is not to love?! Paneer Kulcha - My first time trying a stuffed naan and it was great! Paneer cheese stuffed in between layers of naan with some spices. I recommend it! Masala Tea - Similar to chai but it has some different spices. You still have that very warm, cozy, slightly spicy feel to it. Yum! Gulab Jamun - It is a dessert cheese dumpling with a honey rose syrup. I thought it was a little too sweet and needed a little more rose flavor. Other than that it was pretty good. A different type of dessert than what I am used to. The main entrees do not come with a starch so the naan/rice you order will come on the side. One side of rice was plenty enough for two people. This is a great place to try if you are vegetarian as they have lots of options! Restaurant itself is small with only nine or so tables. The wait staff here are very friendly and happy to explain the menu. I highly recommend this place! I was not expecting to find good Indian food in Banff and this place exceeded expectations. Terrible experience. I went there late afternoon for a cup of tea and the woman at the reception told me they ran out of it in a very cold, discourteous, insulting way! We love Indian and Asian food so we decided to come here. They had vegetarian Thali which is a traditional way to serve an Indian meal. It's basically a bunch of different dishes in tiny bowls. When I saw this on the menu I knew I definitely had to try. It did not disappoint. Mine had rice, daal, veggie curry, paneer curry (which is like an Indian cheese dish). raitha and a dessert dish. We also got garlic naan. The naan was unbelievable!! I thought the paneer and daal were really good too! My husband loved the beef curry that he got. The waiter was also very nice. Here are our FIVE star FAPS: Food (F): Small but mighty! While the serving sizes may look small to the eye, they are extremely filling! Each of the dishes were finished completely by two people! We especially loved the lamb vindaloo! It had great spice! The garlic naan was not as big as we were used to receiving and lacked the flavor we normally have tried. Nonetheless, everything was tasty! Definitely an option if you are craving Indian food! Ambience (A): We were seated outdoors! The weather was comfortable, so we didn't mind being outside. It was nice to people watch as we ate and admire the beatific mountain scenery. Parking (P): We chose to do the free parking option by the Fenland trail. We were just walking around the shopping area and caught a wiff of indian food so we decided to come to Saffron. No wait time and service was fast. I split the beef Kashmiri Rogan Josh with mild spicyness and it was really good. It had a lot of flavor and a decent amount of beef. I ordered a cheese Kulcha and it had a generous amount of cheese. I wouldn't get it next time just because it was difficult to finish both the cheese Kulcha and half of the Kasmiri Rogan Josh. There was a 45 min wait for dinner, which my party and I waited. It was very busy. We ordered a 2 mango lassies and a couple curries with naan, coconut rice, and plain basmati rice. The mango lassi was thick, sweet, tart, and full of mango flavor. The curries were delicious. The coconut rice tasted like coconut and had pieces of coconut mixed in it. Although the coconut rice was tasty, I suggest ordering the plain basmati rice so that you can really taste the flavorful curries. On a late evening, we found this place and had some good reviews in yelp so we decided to place a to go order since we were at Banff at around 9PM and no one was willing to go to a restaurant and then drive back home. The phone order was good, pretty straight forward. we placed our order and the wait time was 40-50 minutes which was unusual but since we were starving we were Ok. we went to the restaurant and the place was so so. The ambience was very low since it was late and there weren't much people in the restaurant. There was no music, All i could hear was plates and spoons so it sort of looked like a 5 min eat and run spot. I don't know about others but i prefer music in restaurants even if it is in very low volume. The person we were greeted was the kitchen staff, so some what seemed lack of organization. May be lets blame ourselves since we were there late and may be there is this charmer who greets customer during the day. And that dude was rude, we went there - food was not ready, so we sat on the table waiting and then this dude tells us that he cant get the Naan (flat Bread) done but would just make the parottas (Flat Bread different Kind). Again, we were starving so had to go with the flow. That guy told us what he could make and we just adjusted to that. May be he believed we were from the same country (which we aren't BTW, this brown textured makes you look spanish, indian, mexican, pakistani, Arabic etc etc). Prices were high comparatively high for the items with the service and the energy of the place. with minimal staffing, the prices should be moderate but i guess when you are at Banff, everything is automatically high. Lastly the food, biryani was like fried rice, the flat bread was burnt which we could still eat but get that burnt after taste since their tandoor was out and they had to pan fry that. i should have switched to white rice instead. Nihali rogan Gosh was ugly green than the green lantern, no presentation at all. I could not try that with how it looked so please avoid this dish. Some items were ok and i guess we were hungry. if i had the time machine i would go back in time and cancel my order and better get McDonalds atleast i would enjoy that. Overall, to my brown folks, not a good option for Indian restaurant, The only reason we ordered from this place was since it has Saffron in its name and no restaurant named Saffron has ever disappointed me here in USA. read more

The restaurant is cozy and easily accessible; we had minimal to no wait time. The staff at the restaurant are all so friendly and accommodating. If felt like I was dining at an old friends house. I am not a pro at Indian food by any means and everyone was so happy to give recommendations and personal favorites. I did a bunch of research on where to have a great lunch in Banff while everyone I came with went snowboarding. Numerous websites kept mentioning Saffron. I live in San Diego and would never get Mexican food while on vacation unless I'm in Mexico...similarly, I wanted to get more of a "Canadian steak" thing since I'm in Canada. That said, Indian food wasn't necessarily what I was leaning towards but all the reviews were so good I had to try it. HANDS DOWN...the absolute best Indian food I have EVER had. The seating inside is limited. We tried the masala papad, malai kofta, dal makhani, butter and garlic naan. The masala papad was not good, they put so much red chili powder in the onion tomato mix that we were barely able to eat it( way too spicy!!!), plus it wasn't really served like you get it usually in India. Dal makhani was the best in terms of taste and flavor. It literally tasted like we were sitting in Delhi eating out in a restaurant. Malai kofta gravy was on the sweeter side but good in taste.
