As a movie lover I immediately fell in love with Speducci Mercatto Italian Restaurant because of all the Classic Hollywood movie posters adorning the high walls. And as a food lover I fell in love again with the gorgeously presented and delicious lunch I had! A friend introduced me to this amazing restaurant and it was an exhilarating dining experience. Speducci Mercatto is an authentic Italian restaurant, café, and market in Toronto's Castlefield Design District. My friend knew I'm a huge foodie and I trusted her for ordering our lunch for us. This is what we shared... Antipasti: Frittura di Pesce Calamari / shrimp / cod / carrots / zucchini / shishito peppers / lemon aioli Pizze: Ortolana San Marzano tomato sauce / sweet peppers / zucchini / eggplant / cherry tomatoes / shitake mushrooms / fior di latte Paste: Strozzapreti alla Guancia di Manzo Strozzapreti / beef cheek ragu / spinach / pecorino fondue Dessert: Bignè 3 colori 3 bignes / pistachio / vanilla / strawberry, ricotta gelato, and candied orange peel. Everything was so delicious and fresh! I was savouring each bite. The calamari was so light and crispy and I loved the additions of colourful zucchini and carrots that set this apart from other calamari I've had. The vegetarian pizza tasted great, flavourful and healthy with all the delicious veggies on a thin crust. The slow roasted beef cheek for the pasta dish was also full of delicious flavour. The dessert was fantastic and each bite was so heavenly. I loved the look of the dessert so much I needed a moment to enjoy its beauty. So a huge shout out to the chef because the presentation looked like a work of art! I had to take many photos of each dish while fending off my friend from digging in! Also a big shout out for the excellent service from our servers Lola and Chris. They were fantastic in answering questions I had about the food and learned that the pasta was house-made. I'm also a fan of mineral water for the health benefits and happy to see they had an Italian brand that was a new taste experience called Fontalbo. Another thanks to Lola and Chris who were kind enough to grant my request to take photos of us with the delicious food and beautiful movie posters. I came here for a business lunch recently, originally we had been scheduled for Joey Yorkdale...am I ever glad we made the switch! This place was the definition of a hidden gem. It's in an industrial area with minimal parking. The front is a store/bakery/deli and in the back is the restaurant. It's fairly small and it was packed when we got there. Good sign! Our server was amazing. He was friendly and engaging, getting us to try this new beer that came in a corked bottle (fun!). He even got me to try a glass, and I'm no beer drinker. I liked it! I got the steak panini, and it was massive! Very filling, very delicious. The fries were pretty decent as well. Prices were very reasonable, especially for what you get. After Suresh Doss wrote about this place, I knew it was just a matter of time before I was sitting down for a meal. I got my opportunity on a rainy Wednesday and we were immediately seated at a table within the empty restaurant. (I guess it helps when you arrive at around 11:15.) Anyway, a quick perusal of the menu led me to the Wild Boar Strozzapretti ("Chef Gabriele Specialty"). It arrived about 10 minutes later and it's fine. Fine but not amazing, which is what I was hoping for. The meat in the sauce is cooked perfectly (i.e. it's not bouncy or overly gamey), but it's also a little one-note in terms of its flavors. There's not really any depth or complexity here, which meant that I kind of grew tired of it after just a few bites. I will give credit to the chef, though, the included giardiniera and fresh cheese did help alleviate the sameness of the concoction. I should also add that the pasta itself was probably a little more well done than I generally prefer (i.e. nobody would ever call it al dente). Would I ultimately say this dish was worth $20? Probably not, but I feel like I might've just ordered the wrong thing. (My dining companion was very happy with his prosciutto sandwich.) read more

Recent weekend visit was disappointing. The quantity has shrunk, prices have gone up and quality is not there. The bread was stale on the steak sandwich. They tried to mask it by toasting it but it just ended up crumbling. The steak was barely visible and over cooked. Very disappointing. Despite being tucked away in an industrial area, this place can get crazy busy at lunch time. My coworkers and I have been coming here for a while now, and the food has never disappointed. Service is quite rushed when it's super busy, but mostly efficient and friendly. They have great sandwiches, salads and pizzas - plus more items that I haven't yet tried. My favourite is their white pizza with prosciutto and arugula and they often switch up the cheese from bufala mozzarella to fior di latte. Always fantastic and enough to share, unless you have a monster appetite! Their salads are huge, and full of great ingredients - nothing boring here! I will usually add a few chicken skewers (speducci) to a salad, too. They also have an incredible selection of deli items, but I haven't bought anything in there (yet) so I can't comment on those. However, I would expect the quality would be just as high as the food they serve in the restaurant. This is one of my favourite lunch spots and I'm sure I'll be back again and again. Speducci Mercatto is a hidden gem! Between the two of us, we shared the Speducci salad, sage butter ravioli and the steak sandwich. The Speducci salad contains the usual mixed greens with a choice of 5 speducci between chicken, beef and lamb. Since we don't eat lamb, we choose a mixture of beef and chicken. The speducci tasted quite gamey. I suspect it is because they just grilled a large amount of lamb speducci for another party. Even though they are famous for their speducci, I don't think I will order them again. The sage butter ravioli was amazing! The pasta skin was thin and supple. The sage butter sauce totally hits the spot. I couldn't pick out the sage flavour, but it just tasted amazing without being over-the-top buttery. They were extremely generous with their portions, there were approx 20 raviolis. The only thing I wish was that there was a bit more ricotta filling. But it's understandable as it might be difficult with the delicate pasta. For the steak sandwich we added provolone to it as I was worried it might be on the dry side. Both of us were really happy with the sandwich. The beef was well seasoned and thinly sliced. The bread was soft and airy. The service was welcoming and attentive. The food came quite quickly despite it being at 80% capacity when we dined. I would totally come here again to try their other fresh pasta dishes! P.S. We have been coming here for several years, but a recent visit will be our last. There seem to be new owners, and certainly a new chef. The market looks bare, the fabulous sausage, and meat room is a shadow of its former self, and is filled largely with bottled goods. The porchetta in the meat counter was tiny and unappealing. Worse, was the meal: many dishes were ill conceived; all were poorly executed; and none, or even good, let alone great. (who put lettuce on a pizza? Went to lunch at this restaurant. Interior is really nicely decorated. Servers were very attentive. This Restaurants menu serves Italian foods like pizza, pasta and sandwiches. Prices of the items on the menu for a bit High compared to portion sizes but we're done the less tasty. In my opinion the lasagna for the bit on the saltier side. The Margarita Pizza was quite fresh and the crust was thin. The Porsche Ito sign language was not worth the price as it was just very with a couple slices of prosciutto. The food is exceptional, however, when I asked for a beer, I was encouraged to try a beer from Italy, the bottle was maybe 750ML. When I received the bill I wanted to vomit at a $25 price tag. Tried to upsell us on wine. Took us to a table where wine started at $80 and up to over $200 a bottle. Ordered beer, no draft, only had one brand of Italian bottled beer that I've had before in little Italy but they charged $25 plus tax and tip. We loved this place because of the group table seating. You're surrounded by food on shelves that you can purchase . There's a butcher counter next to you, cheeses, meat drying area. We haven't even started to eat yet! Nice selection on the menu. I tried the Porchetta and Rapini Sandwich. My wife had the Arugula and Andouille Pizza. My sandwich was so warm and the Porchetta was thinly sliced with a crunchy outside. My wife's pizza was a nice sized rectangle served on on wooden platter. A cute little gem of a meat shop/restaurant in the fashion district. We were just passing by and decided to give it a try. They have a wide variety of meat that they supply to local restaurants and its delicious. A decent wine collection is on the menu and it pairs well with the food. We ordered a marg pizza , meatballs pasta and chicken parm sandwich. Everything was served hot and super tasty. The best was saved for the last the dessert tiramisu and coffee were amazing and we ended up ordering second servings. A must visit if in the area. Wow, didn't expect much on the outside but it's a cool Italian vibe inside the restaurant. Their pastas are to die for, the wild boar pasta is a must try. I've also had some of their steaks which is on par with some of the nicer steak restaurants in Toronto. The price of their steaks are extremely reasonable but the quality is what gets it out of the park. They also have a great selection of wines and specialty Italian beers.
