And it seems like Toronto is lots of pockets and neighborhoods so it's hard to know where to go to get the local vibe. I honestly don't know how I found bar Vendetta in my search and what made me know it would hit the mark, but I showed up on a rainy Sunday evening, took a window counter seat and enjoyed some great food and wine! I have been trying to find a reason to be in the area of this place for months! Unfortunately, nothing worked. Therefore, found a good reason to justify ordering in (number 1 reason: I found a window when they were delivering!) Let's start there! I love that they offer delivery but the windows for delivery are very short 1-2hrs a day. The reason, I'm guessing, is they don't get a ton of diners during those times so their attention can shift to non-in-person requests. I should also mention they only offer a partial menu for delivery so keep that in mind. I ordered Trecce and a lemon torta. The trecce was presented nicely and it transported well. The portion was a good size and the taste was delicious. The first thing I noticed was how the smokiness of the bacon was mildly infused into each bite. Add in the freshness of the broccoli and it's an underutilized combination of flavours. The torta is silky smooth! Not overly sweet but it melts in your mouth. The one thing i could have lived without was the sliced almonds. It just wasn't needed. Therefore, I felt it was worth ordering! had a very serious and frightening experience at Bar Vendetta. When ordering, I clearly told my server multiple times that I have a severe anaphylactic tree nut allergy and stated that there cannot be any tree nuts on my dish. He acknowledged this and also recognized me from a previous visit where my allergy had been properly accommodated. Despite that, I was served a dish that contained tree nuts. After a few bites, I felt something was wrong and asked to confirm whether there were nuts. The server returned and told me there were, and admitted fault that he had forgotten to ring in my allergy, which resulted in a mistake in the kitchen. I then went into anaphylactic shock in the restaurant. I had to use my EpiPen and call an ambulance, and was taken to the hospital. As a result, I now have a $300 ambulance bill and approximately $100 to replace my EpiPen, along with the physical and emotional impact of a life-threatening reaction that was entirely preventable. I was a server for 5 years and allergies need to be taken seriously. For context, I have eaten here before and disclosed the same allergy, and the restaurant was able to accommodate it properly. That's what makes this even more concerning--this was not a situation where they didn't know how to handle it. It's complete negligence and I now have hundreds of dollars in medical bills because of it. I have not been offered any sort of solution to this by the bar. I did everything I was supposed to do: * clearly disclosed my allergy * stated that it is anaphylactic * emphasized no tree nuts on my dish This incident occurred because that information was not properly communicated or followed. I'm a very big fan of everything Jen Agg does, so it's surprising that I hadn't been to Bar Vendetta until a few days ago. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We arrived a few minutes early for our reservation and were shown to a cozy, quiet table right in the restaurant's back corner.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] (It's Table 9 if you're interested in replicating our romantic experience.) Everything on the menu sounded really amazing, but we decided to share the following four items: Rosemary Focaccia: I'd read that this was a must-try and I was not misled. This certainly ranks right up there among the best focaccia I've ever had; it's just so flavorful and fresh, and enhanced by the included oil/balsamic combination. Meatballs with tomato sauce and basil pesto: Speaking of the best things, these meatballs were absolutely incredible. The meatballs themselves are well above average, but it's that tomato sauce that knocked my socks right off. It's just so deep and rich, and I could've consumed a whole pint of the stuff. It was especially good with a bit of that focaccia. Rapini: I'm not usually a big fan of rapini, as I find it's just too bitter for me. I figured if anyone could do it right, it would be a place like this and I was not wrong. This is a fantastic dish that perfectly balances out rapini's natural bitterness with plenty of garlic and a very tasty sauce. Crown Cacio e Pepe with ricotta, lemon, butter, black pepper: Most reviews insisted this is the dish to get, including the Michelin write-up, so obviously we had to get it. And yeah, it's amazing. It's super rich and flavorful, and the pasta is perfectly cooked. It's not a light dish, but it's something everyone needs to try. Overall, we had a terrific time at Bar Vendetta. Aside from our fairly lackluster server, who was hardly present and barely talked to us, we had an amazing time. We'll almost certainly be returning. read more

Back exactly one year after visiting for our anniversary. Food is just as beautiful and high quality as last time. We ordered the bruschetta with smoked ricotta, crown cacio e Pepe and rapini. This was my favorite dining experience in Toronto by far. Immediately upon entering I KNEW I was home. Everyone working was alt, there was 70s decor everywhere, and it was an open kitchen format. They have incredible wine selections and every single menu item looked good (I would know because I sat right at the pass) They were already sold out of the Sunday lasagna and the special of the day by the time I got there at 8 which was fine because I had my eye on the cacio crown. Traditionally, lemon isn't used in cacio e pepe but this isn't a traditional place and they made the RIGHT call! The lemon cut the richness to make the dish perfectly balanced. Overall, the food, service and ambiance was excellent. I would definitely return and recommend. The cheesy garlic bread is a must have as it was the best I've ever had. The pasta was cooked well and very flavourful - no shortage of sauce. The Crown Cacio e Pepe pasta was really good, portion was small yet filling. The bar is beautiful, and the small open kitchen fills the room with delectable aromas. The food was overall very good, no misses, and most having a small twist on classic dishes. Here's the rundown: - Farro salad: loved the mushrooms, rest of the dish was a bit average for me - Garlic bread was delicious, perfectly melty and filled with cheese, and drizzled with honey which made for a deliciously sticky bite - Trecce: pesto pasta which had some really nicely smoked veggies, the cheesy pesto sauce was lovely - Rigatoni: the sauce was warm and cozy and the ultimate comfort food. The fried potatoes on top were too dominant of a texture but made for a nice bite separately. - Cacio e pepe crown: personally I'm not a fan of ricotta cheese so I didn't love this one, but the idea was excellent and the lemony cacio e pepe sauce was delicious - Gelato was pistachio, the flavour was light but the crushed pistachios throughout made for a nice crunchy bite Overall really enjoyed this spot and would love to come back to try more items on the menu. This is one of those places that you don't want to review because you'd rather keep it to yourself. Not that it's a secret. It's obviously well known and well reviewed. But, still... The thing is Vendetta is exceptional. This was our second visit and we came with friends from Montreal - and we really wanted them to have a good experience. Service is friendly and efficient and since the space is small staff are never far off. The menu is compact and every item somehow offers more flavor than the description suggests. In an era of bloated menu verbage, where it seems like you pay by the word, this is saying something. I don't know what they are doing but they are doing it right - a lot of thought has gone into designing the dishes and a lot of care and attention into making them. We started with the meatballs, garlic bun and new potatoes. Meatballs are amazing, you'll want to have more. You will try to lick the plate. The new potatoes, with Stracciatella cheese and a hint of caviar, is so good. We shared a plate and it took all our strength not to fight over it. Simple but sublime. We all had pasta and each and everyone was great. A real standout was the trecce with asparagus - it tasted like the pasta was made out of asparagus. Delightful. The wine selection is also well curated and you can find something a little less expensive or you can shoot the works. We went for a Olek Bondonio Barbera d'Asti that was quite tasty and a fine compliment to the food. All in all everyone was deeply impressed. We are still talking about what a great meal that was. Food: 4.5/5 Started off with the cheesy garlic bread which was served piping hot with a satisfying cheese pull, although a little bit sweet, resembling Asian style bakery bun. The scallop crudo was fantastic. Though the portion is a bit small for 26$, the tarte citrus combined with the creamy flavours of the oil and scallops had us devouring the plate. Our favourite appetizer by far was the new potatoes with stracciatella pistachio and caviar. WOW. It's truly so perfectly balanced and got better with every bite. I don't know how but this dish is both light and creamy, and despite it being solid and dense, it pulled off the creaminess and heartwarming experience of a mashed potato. The addition of the caviar added a more complex flavour, introducing a savoury finish to every bite in contrast to the neutral potato and cheese. Highly recommend this one. As for the mains, we got the famous crown cacio e Pepe. Though just one large piece, I did find this was the perfect portion given how heavy it was. I loved how buttery and creamy it was, as well as the generous amounts of pepper that gave it a nice kick. We also ordered the octopus, which was a limited menu item that day. While we did find it just a touch overcooked, the flavours of the chickpea puree, the sweetness from the juicy tomato along with the added crunch of the toasted breadcrumbs... wow. I can truly see the effort Bar Vendetta puts behind each dish. Every item here is so well balanced, nothing is too sweet, too savoury, or too heavy. Everything has a perfect balance of a multitude of flavours, creating such a delightful dining experience that gets better with each bite. Finished it off with the lemon torta which was too die for. It's an almond flour lemon cake with toasted almonds and a touch of powdered sugar on top. It was soft and creamy but still firm and very dense. It almost resembled a cheesecake... but with a more complex profile from the combination of almond flour and lemon. So so so good. Service: 5/5 The server we had was so so friendly and knowledgeable about the menu! She gave us a few recommendations which we loved. Water glasses were never empty. I was visiting Toronto with friends and the general consensus was an Italian restaurant. I kind of booked this without doing my typical obsessive amounts of research and was glad I just went with it. I was almost hesitant to leave a review because I want to make sure I can get a reservation next time I come back. Dinner at Bar Vendetta was the highlight of our trip to Toronto. Their excellent service was complimented by even better food. We started out with focaccia, which was a hard decision given all of the great appetizer options. It's got that perfect decor, vibe and service that Jen Agg is known for. During the pandemic summer of 2020 we enjoyed the SUPER ADORBS back patio. And during lockdown, it's been all about takeout. No matter what your medium may be, the food and drink are guaranteed top notch delish. We even did a pasta kit last time, and with an order of the superb Puntarelle salad, and a spot-on Tiramisu for dessert, it was a phenomenal meal...which is basically what we always get at Vendetta. BOTTOM LINE: I'm not sure where they source their ingredients, but dishes taste fresh AF. From the space where Black Hoof used to be, comes Jen Agg's new replacement. Initially advertised as being a weekdays-only resto, it's now open 7-days a week. No reservations so plan accordingly, and don't be surprised by wait times of over 90 minutes, especially if you come during the Thursday-to-Saturday rush. The menu is small and Italian-inspired. I've come here a few times and my DCs and I have ordered a good chunk of the menu. The portions are also relatively small, so take that into consideration if you're feeling famished. Here are my recos: BRUSCHETTA: Get this. The smokiness was a very pleasant surprise. MEATBALLS: Get this too. You get three. They're juicy and creamy. BEEF CARPACCIO: Recommended. The beef is thinly sliced and I'm not sure what they've added on top to give it a crunchy texture, but it's great. SQUASH: It was just okay. PAPPARDELLE: YAAAS! I've now tried this twice and this is easily my fave. It's rich and layered with flavour. CACIO E PEPE CROWN: My second-fave pasta dish here. I'm sure I'm gonna get skewered for calling it a giant Italian soup dumpling, but that was my first thought when I had it. Delicately crafted, it's filling was delightfully creamy. TRECCE: My third-fave pasta, but also the one I tried the least of. All I can remember was thinking, "this would be great to have in the summer" [shruggy emoji]. Would definitely order it again though. SPAGHETTI: If you like a lighter and cleaner taste in your pasta sauce, then you should try this vegetarian option. For me, however, it didn't speak to me as much. Finally, there is a large wine selection; however, not being a particular oenophile, I've just gone with their house wine of the night. Dark environment with mismatched tables and chairs and walls plastered with classic music posters and a Spy vs Spy mural featuring a broken wine bottle and a corkscrew as weapons...clever. Wine choices are less extensive and indicated on spotty and crinkled paper menus which are near impossible to read in the murky surroundings. It's a place reminiscent of Eric's basement hangout in that 70's show. The menu focuses on pasta at peaks hours and gimmicks like muffuletta sandwiches and nachoes pre- and post-prime time respectively. My trio of dishes included the tuna diavolo, eggplant and trecce pasta. The tuna was vibrant and fresh and balanced nicely with a little heat courtesy of some fresh chilis. The eggplant and pasta on the other hand were pretty substandard. There was the odd bite of brilliance in the eggplant but overall it was rather bland and uninspiring, The pasta, which I assumed would be the pinnacle of the experience, was the biggest letdown mainly due to the fact it was uncooked and almost crunchy. We made of the mistake of ordering cocktails in a wine bar and paid dearly. I'm always nervous to trash cocktails based on my own odd booze-forward tastes but after playing sharsies with the Dry Clean, Provocateur and Fade Out, my trusted table mates and I concurred that none of them where anywhere close to stellar. If you're in Toronto you HAVE to try this place. Jen Agg is a thoughtful and intelligent restauranteur and her businesses reflect that. Wine, cocktails, food and dessert were all impeccable and I went in without any expectations. I'm still dreaming of the rigatoni. I DO miss the Black Hoof, it was such an institution and go-to date spot around Bellwoods but this place definitely fills the void. read more

It's not fair. It's not fair when you see the ingredients in the dish and tell your friend and the waitress "this seems very simple", and then they laugh at you and then you get the food and feel like a complete moron. That's not what happened to me at Bar Vendetta... Another reviewer said that the playlist slaps and I lol'd. Not just the playlist slaps, the food spanks. I was pleasantly surprised how intricate the pastas were with what seemed to be basic ingredients. Is this what it means for foods to be "elevated"? I still don't know how to use the word. Moral of the story: this is now the place I name drop when I want to impress people when they ask for good Italian food. ?!?! What is happening? Have none of the reviewers eaten at Bar Isobel or Patois? We are three grown adults. We were seated at a two top (see picture) and then told this was normal - they had a little stack of extra chairs behind my sister in laws chair. We were squeezed in. Ps. Another group of three got sat at a table for 4 (maybe they had a person not show up). Also. Remember the hard chairs we sat on in school? That's what we're sitting on. Whatever right? We'll let the meals speak for themselves. My 23 $ salmon crudo was 5 pieces of salmon. It was good but ... what? Long story short. Everything was 5-7$ over priced. Lasagne was okay. But not a 22 $ piece of lasagne. Lastly. We were there with a relative from out of Town and we're looking forward to this meal. Got a babysitter and everything and We were rushed out. Hard pass. I have a lot of respect for Jen Agg, and she is not a huge fan of Yelp. To honour this to-each-their-own vibe, I've refrained from reviewing Bar Vendetta for a long while. But I've got to give them some props somewhere, so here it is. This restaurant has handled the pandemic with intelligence, care, and now that they're open the highest standard of cleanliness. The pastas here are world-class, the wine list is divine and again, they are not messing around at all. Their patio is beautiful, and reservations and masks are required. I'm not sure if they're operating with their full menu or not yet, but if they are/when they are, please try their muffalettas and cacio e pepe crown. Sometimes a Queen needs a crown, y'know? I've been loving Bar Vendetta for years! Amazing spot for a date or a dinner with friends. The wine menu is pretty extensive. The fresh in-house focaccia bread is to die for, all of their pastas are ‍ ! The staff is super friendly and practice safe covid protocols! There is a covered patio in the back with extended socially distanced seating. Also their cocktails are really good. Really great spot for birthdays too!! read more
