Every dish showed the chef's dedication; the flavors were rich and layered without being overly complex, the kind that makes you want to keep eating. The presentation was also exquisite, making them look incredibly appetizing. The service was equally commendable. The staff were incredibly friendly and professional, making me feel comfortable from the moment I entered until I left. There was no sense of pressure, yet they were always attentive to my needs, maintaining a perfect pace. The restaurant's atmosphere also left a deep impression. The ambiance was warm and inviting with a touch of modern style, perfect for a casual get-together with friends or a date. I tried the eggs benedict and a croque madame. The eggs were perfectly poached and the Hollandaise sauce was rich, but the portion felt a bit small for the price. The croque madame was tasty, though the bread was slightly over-toasted for my liking. The brownie on the side was very sweet--maybe a bit too much for me--but still enjoyable. Amazing, amazing neighborhood spot on Ossington! We happened to stumble in here to try out their natural wine selections. What we didn't realize was how delicious and hearty the food would be! On Mondays they do 1/2 off bottles of wine--and amazing deal! We had some natural Canadian chardonnay that was absolutely delicious and unlike any chardonnay we'd tasted before. We got some Prince Edward Island oysters, which were so fresh and absolutely delicious. They came with a habanero chutney, instead of your standard cocktail sauce--SPICY!! I had the seared tuna and it was excellent! Staff was friendly, helpful, and fun. I overheard a couple saying they'd been dining here every Monday for 10+ years, so it's clearly a spot the locals love. There is something to be said about a place that delivers consistently great food and service over a period of years. I've been to Union a handful of times over the years and each and every visit has been pleasantly memorable. In the past I've always been drawn to their more meaty fare. I still have a vivid memory of a steak for two that was top-drawer. But on my last visit I allowed myself to be convinced to order a salad. The Union Salad in fact, which seems simple enough-- organic greens, double smoked bacon, chèvre, & rosti. And my goodness was I not disappointed. Everything was more than perfect and more than the sum of its parts. It all went together so well. And I've been thinking of that salad ever since. This restaurant supplies ingredients from local businesses, which is nice to see. Main dining area is pretty small and we didn't have a reservation but they accommodated us at the back counter which was kind of cool because we had a front row to chefs prepping and cooking. However if you are tall like my friend (6'3") it may be a little uncomfortable. At one point he had to get up to stretch his legs. Food was tasty we both got the steak medium rare which was delicious. The crème brûlée was good as was the sticky ginger cake. I took off one star because the first steak they brought me was well done which is a no-no for me. They did comp me a drink which I appreciated. Celebrated a dear friend's birthday in their back sheltered patio area! We made reservations in advance for our table of 7, and service was extremely thoughtful and delightful throughout. HIGHLY recommend reservations as it's always packed. The meal was absolutely delicious. Every dish was well executed and we were happy to see that Union works with local farmers for their seasonal, organic produce and meat. It's a "Farm to Chef to Table" dining experience! Here's what we had: 1. Dressed Beet Salad - Genius of a salad served with a beautiful mild blue cheese and a sprinkle of walnuts; flavour and texture is incredible1. 2. Ontario Asparagus - fresh and in season the asparagus were great and served with a giant hunk of brie! 3. Hokkaido Scallop Crudo - light and refreshing 4. Steak Frites - a fantastic medium rare steak sliced so it was easy to share. Frites were so good that we added a side order! 5. Fettuccine alla Vongole - Perfectly cooked pasta with a rich sauce and good portion of clams 6. My #1 choice when you need to suggest an elevated place for lunch that's not stuffy and where food it delicious, consistent and worth it. I've been here for dinner and for lunch and everything is always spot on. On my most recent two lunch visits, I've had the meal size Union salad. Might sound boring but it's so not. It's got potato galettes, a huge dollop of goat cheese, thick slabs of bacon. A meat-lovers salad. I was so eager to eat I forgot to take a pic. I was there with 3 pals and we also started with the entree sized beef tartare and an order of the fries. Fries are huge to share. Tartare was great - bread was especially tasty and quite dense and garlicky. We started with Aperol spritzes and had a fabulous bottle of white - Viñátigo Listán Blanco from the Canary Islands. 4.3 stars and my favorite meal of 2025 thus far. I had a few Toronto locals rave about this place to me, so I knew I had to check it out. I'm so pleased that I did. My party of 3 stumbled in sans reservation and were sat immediately in the heated back room. Kind of feels like a patio? The place was buzzing and entrees were catching my eye every 5 seconds. But I finally settled on the steak frites, which were very tasty. The steak was lean, but still very flavor-filled despite not having an abundance of marbling. Usually it's a dish served rarer, but they were happy to cook it to my liking. The fries were perfectly crispy without being overdone and the sauce they came with was heavenly. But the real show stopper was dessert. A sticky toffee cake that was positively divine. Sweet without being overly sweet with notes of warming spices like cinnamon and cardamom gave it depth and complexity. And the ice cream on top was the perfect finish. It was so good I seriously considered returning the next day for another. I also had a bite of the crème brûlée...definitely another winner. read more

Went to Toronto for the first time and decided to google around to see what was available. This place was pretty highly rated on Google reviews and was able to take reservations for 8 people so we decided to check it out! We realized after that this place is on the Michelin guide and it definitely did not disappoint. Our group of 8 was seated in the outside "patio" but the weather was warm enough that we were totally fine. We ordered the rotisserie cornish hen, and it was one of the best I've ever had!! So juicy, soft, and the exterior was sauced up perfectly. We also got the Mushroom Tartine and NY strip steak frites. Mushrooms were so buttery and tasted delicious with the fluffy and thick bread. Out of the 3 dishes, the steak unfortunately fell short as it was chewy and tough to eat. Portions are super generous and well worth it for its price! My friends and I made a reservation for brunch and enjoyed our time here. We got the mimosa kit for the 3 of us and we all had just a little bit over 2 and a half glasses each. For mains, we had ordered the Huevos Frijoles, Salmon and Swordfish Fishcake and the Union Salad. Everything was very flavourful with good portion sizes! The only thing I would have preferred is if the Union Salad came with chopped lettuce .. it was served with whole leaves, which made it kind of hard to eat (felt like I was shoving it into my mouth and it was hard to cut, lol). It does get busy here during brunch so the service was a little slow, but the vibes were great and it's a lively spot to check out! Would definitely come back to try the other dishes. read more

Walked by looking for a dog friendly patio and we were in luck that Union had one table left on their outside street patio! Service is casual cool but attentive. The menu is small with classic options- many veggie options as well! We went with the Hache, crudo, asparagus and ended with the ginger cake! An Ossington staple for years, Union is one of those old reliables that you go to for any occasion. The dishes do not miss here. We tried a whole assortment of dishes, and everything was so well executed. The best bites I had this time around were the crispy skin of the trout in that buttery sauce, the perfectly seared crust of the steak, the kale smothered in that sticky rib sauce, and their real potato fries in an extra garlicky aioli. Came here on a whim while shopping, well worth the stop! We came midday on Sunday and there were a couple tables filled, not too busy. Really pretty inside with an open view of the kitchen. Service and ordering was prompt. We ordered: -black coffee with cream and sugar -fresh-squeezed Orange juice -the Union Breakfast Sandwich -Flat Top Breakfast You could tell the details of our meals were fresh and healthily prepared as well. For example, my flat top came with bacon that was seasoned, baked (instead of fried) and not dripping in grease. The tart Orange juice was loaded with pulp. Even the decorative lettuce on my plate had a house made mustard seed oil drizzled on. We finished our meals with no leftovers to spare. My only qualm was that my eggs were over-cooked, and the menu was a little steep. We first called in and asked if we could drop by for dinner without a reservation, on a saturday night. They said...yeah...but there could be a wait. Fair enough. We went by later at about 7 pm and they said yeah, it'll be a solid hour just for seats at the bar. Shit. We left our name anyway, said it was for a birthday (true, mine!) and they said they would see what they could do. No worries - I knew we were late and had no reservations, so if they couldn't fit us in, I would have no hard feelings! Fast forward about 20 minutes with us at a bar down the street, and they say that our table is ready. What?!? So we head up and suddenly realize we are being put at the chef's table! Yes, al three of us (my wife, our girlfriend and me). Holy crap! Suffice it to say, we had an amazing time! The server was awesome. The chef was awesome. The sous chef and their assistants were awesome. The bartender was awesome. The food was seriously off the hook (and we could watch it all come out before we eve ordered). There was noting bad. Hell, there was nothing even meh. The food was amazing, as was the service. I promise you, whenever I'm back in Toronto, I will be coming here. They can serve me at the chefs table, a regular table or on the sidewalk out front. I don't care. The food, the service and the friendliness was epic. One of the best places I have ever eaten. We were watching an episode of Big Food Bucket List a couple weeks back and there was a feature on Union, a restaurant I've walked by a million times but never visited. All the food on the show looked amazing, so I immediately booked a reservation for this past Saturday night. We arrived a little early and were told our table wasn't quite ready yet, so we were invited to sit by the bar and order a couple of drinks. It turned out that said drinks were comped! It was a really nice welcome. We were shown to our table a short time later and I was impressed/relieved that it wasn't just a couple of inches away from the tables on either side of us. That's just about the worst thing about a lot of hip restaurants, in my opinion. There was a fairly generous amount of space between the tables, which enhanced the private, romantic atmosphere. We probably wound up ordering too much food, but there were a few things I knew I had to try. We ordered: Roast Heirloom Squash ("goat ricotta, walnuts, brown butter"): I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this but holy moly is this a tasty dish. The perfectly-cooked squash is elevated (and then some) by the various components, and I especially enjoyed that goat ricotta. This is essentially a meal in itself! Elk Sliders ("toasted challah, mirin galangal glaze, pickles"): This is one of the dishes I knew we had to order and it didn't disappoint. Although it's perhaps not quite as mind-blowingly flavorful as I might've hoped, the elk meat itself is cooked so perfectly that I really can't complain. Union Salad ("organic greens, double smoked bacon, chèvre, rosti"): Another incredible dish. This is far from the basic salad you might expect, as the dish contains a whole bunch of absolutely delicious elements that combine so, so well. I especially loved the zesty dressing and the flavorful bacon and rosti. Sticky Ribs ("charcoal smoked, in house bbq sauce, braised greens"): This was the main reason I wanted to come to Union and to say that it absolutely didn't disappoint is an understatement of epic proportions. This will sound like hyperbole but this dish is easily one of the best things I've eaten in my entire life. The super tender ribs are perfectly complemented by that house bbq sauce, which pretty much knocked my socks off in terms of its tastiness and addictive qualities. (Seriously, bottle that stuff and sell me an entire crate.) The included frites with aioli take the dish right over the top, too. We were obviously pretty darn full after all that food but I was having such a good time that I couldn't resist ordering dessert. I went with the Sticky Ginger Cake ("salted caramel") and it's one incredible sweet treat. The moist cake is so flavorful and does possess a pretty distinct ginger taste, and the included ice cream and caramel sauce is a perfect accompaniment. I had a really terrific time at Union. It went from not being on my radar to one of the best restaurants I've ever eaten at essentially overnight, and I certainly look forward to returning again and again. (I'm excited to try other things on the menu but I'll never not order those ribs, that's for sure.) read more

The beef tartare was amazing but the fresh buttery bread was soooooo good. It melted in your mouth. The Elk sliders were lovely. I would eat these again 3 times over. After debating which restaurant to go to along Ossington, (there are a lot!) we landed on putting a reservation in for Union. Seemed like great reviews although not many recent ones in 2022. All in all, their food was pretty good. Flavourful, well-portioned, and well cooked. A solid 4 star French restaurant where you'll enjoy a filling meal but is not necessarily something spectacular or outstanding. The additional -1 star is from the service that could use some improvement. At the time, the restaurant was about half full, but from what I observed, they may have also been shorthanded having only 3 or so servers. I get that when you're serving drinks, food, and bussing, it becomes chaotic, but as a restaurant you also understand the # of expected guests and balance that against the staff required. Servers were not very attentive, requiring to be flagged down for anything, and a big point of improvement was their attitude. Most servers looked doom & gloom like they didn't want or need you business. Not a good vibe. Now the food.. We ordered the elk sliders to start and I was actually hoping they would be a little gamier in flavour. They were really well cooked to a nice medium-well, juicy, but ultimately resembled a good normal beef slider. The steak tartare was quite good, they offer it in app size (3oz) and a main size (6oz). We ordered the main size and it was quite good topped with homemade pickles, and accompanied by 2 mustards, a hot sauce, and 6 large slices of toasted bread. The tartare itself already had quite a bit of mustard in it. They probably could've gone a little lighter on the mustard in the tartare as there were moments where it overpowered the flavourful meat itself. The steak frites was probably my favourite. Steak was perfectly cooked medium rare (although they didn't ask how we liked it) and seasoned, topped with a compound butter. The fries were perfectly crispy and thin, topped with a big dollop of homemade mayo that had a slight sweetness to it. Food was good, service needed improvement. Food is a love language right? I love when an unfamiliar restaurant exceeds my expectations. We snagged a last minute table for a boozy brunch and literally everything was delicious! Oysters: Fresh and came with all the usual fixins Steak Tartare: This was SO good, one of the top tartares I've had in Toronto! The habenero, dijon and mustard paired very well with the tartare, and the bread was perfectly toasted Gnocchi: The gnocchi was soft and bolognese sauce was well seasoned and not overly salty. Union Burger: The burger was thick and juicy, and contained two types of melted cheese, house-made bread and butter pickles all between buttery soft buns. This burger was unreal! Polenta Gratin: This is the first time I had polenta and it was definitely better than I expected. The outside was crispy and the tomato flavors really penetrated into the polenta. However we were also pretty full by the time we got to this so we sadly couldn't enjoy it as much. The service was top notch, I remember asking if the pickles were made in house and they confirmed it was, and brought out another serving without hesitation. I liked how for some items, they had the appetizer and main portion pricing which I think more restaurants should have. We sat outside and the service left very little to desire for, let's just say it lacked polish. The Caesars were nice, we enjoyed them; I would order them again. The steak tartare lacked creativity and quite frankly taste. It was bland and predictable to say the least. The hot sauce was surprisingly hot, nobody was kidding there! Yet it was delicious. Me and my friend went out for lunch because on fridays our school lets us go out, my friend went to union to get fries. When we got there they told us they open at 11:30 so we came back at 11:30 and asked them if the were open and they kinda snapped at us and said the will open in 10-15 minutes which was already annoying because we have to be back at a certain time, but my friend really wanted fries so we waited. When they finally opened and we ordered our fries they told us to sit on the patio and wait, while we were waited my friend went to go ask what the guest wifi password and got dismissed. This is was my first time at Union and it was one of my best dining experiences. Everything exceeded my expectations, including the atmosphere, service and food. Their back patio has a hip, industrial vibe to it. The dim lighting made it feel cosy yet sophisticated. The floor wasn't perfectly flat, so our table was slightly wobbly. However, the waitress addressed this problem within minutes of being seated. The service felt casual but classy. The speed of service was great too, we were in a rush to go somewhere else after and we were accommodated despite based on our schedule. Food: Beef tartare - a lot of people mentioned this is a must-order; after trying it, I absolutely agree. The meat tasted fresh and rich, which was balanced out by the sharpness of the mustard and horseradish. The pickles added a sweet flavour to the bite, and the bread was toasted perfectly. Tomato salad - this was on the house because our waiter dropped our entree by accident (speaks volume about the service). This is our favourite dish of the night, just fresh seasonal tomatoes with rich creamy burrata. A really simple dish with high quality ingredients. Burger - didn't get a chance to take a pic of the burger because we were in a rush. Arguably one of the best burgers in the city. The juicy patty was cooked to a perfect medium rare. The fries reminded me of McDonald's golden fries, but this was better because it came was a horseradish mayo sauce that resembled Belgium frites. Portion size was massive too. Sticky ribs - this is our least favourite item of the night, but it was still good. Once again, huge portion size. Dessert was "dessert" The service was poor and way below my expectations. As a customer, I was so sorry to interfere with server's job in my role as a customer. She made no attempt to at the least pretend to be welcoming and seemed to have lots of other things to do. Serving our table was an inconvenience in her bigger picture. Felt like I was checking in to a flight hoping to be treated well. Wont go back to Union. It was unwelcoming. Cost was $90 a person pre tip (drink, apps, meal). This is why I don't automatically give "18% or more". Yuk. I'm sure she would do well in her other job. Its time for her to move on or call in sick if its too hard. CANCELLED WITH A LIE We booked a reservation a week in advance for 5:30 Friday June 17th, nothing big, just our 9th anniversary. On arrival we were told, "We tried to call you, we have to cancel everyone because we have fuses out, the hood fans won't work so we can't cook anything." Offered us a free glass of cheap wine and we sat at the window and drank it. Stuff happens... right? We're polite people, we offered to pay for the wine and left the server a tip. We did definitely smell food cooking however, and as we were leaving we noticed staff setting all the tables along the patio. Why would they be setting things out if they had canceled the reservations?? We went across the street to Papi Chulo's and had some tacos. Just over an hour later, in what would have still been our reservation window (and the others they cancelled) we see that EVERY SINGLE TABLE ON THE LARGE PATIO IS FULL and people are happily eating. Went with some friends after a conference downtown; we were just looking for a nice place for delicious food and drinks and everywhere was packed on the strip; this place had spots and the truth is that we just wanted to settle on a place and were almost gonna bounce when we saw the menu looked unbecoming and on top extremely expensive for what it seemed. But thankfully we decided to stay and give it a chance. Everything was just incredible! The menu is small but I understand why now - every single item we chose exceeded our expectations and basically we foodgasmed for everything . The oysters were so fresh with such delicious tangy sauce, the elk sliders just so juicy and flavorful, even the salad was so good. The ginger cake dessert special with the ginger sorta kick, creme brule spot on. All our cocktails were delicious too. We definitely enjoyed sharing our meal together. It's an expensive place but I think for a nice occasion it's def worth it. We paid about $150 for the 3 of us. Would def come back for another special occasion. read more

This place is such a great gem in the city. I highly recommend the tartare and if you ask my bf the burger is best around town. They have great takeout and can't wait to sit on the patio again read more
