Le Solistice

I'll be real here, we booked for dinner but only stayed for a drink. I didn't even try the food but upon hearing from the server, you have to order 3 appetizers and 2 main courses to have a full meal, so I was already out the door. For reference, it's 55 plus tax for a 5oz steak and a few fries. Yes this a fine dining experience however, it really didn't seem worth it to me for what you're getting. The drink (Le Solstice) was very tasty, which I've heard their cocktails are far superior to their food. The ambiance was very nice and the bathrooms were clean. The waiter however seemed quite unenthused and mellow--Not a smile in sight. I'm all about energy and his seemed off. When we asked about drink recommendations, he just said "this drink is popular". Didn't mention what was in it, why it was so popular or tell us what he liked. Just expected more attentiveness for a high end restaurant. Overall not a terrible experience for what it was, but we ended up going to a different restaurant so take that for what you will. My recommendation, if you do end up coming, arrive between 5-7pm for their happy hour for $10 drinks and snacks. But keep in mind, it's $10 per cut of meat and $10 per cheese.

While on vacation, we stopped into Lapinou for dinner. We loved all the appetizers we ordered! They were full of flavor and the seafood was very fresh. When we ordered entrees we got Duck and a Branzino. The Duck was full of flavor while the Branzino lacked some. The eggplant rice was delicious and so was our dessert! Our server was very knowledgeable when it came to ordering and attentive. The atmosphere was great for a date night or a group dinner. Definitely worth a try!

I have mixed feelings about this place. The food was fantastic, but we were there for a birthday celebration and they messed up the entire seating, we were spread out all over the back part of the restaurant instead of being seated together. Service was polite but slow-at least 30 mins between courses. This may be because dinner service for the celebration was family style, but I believe it could've been coordinated better. Again, I'll reiterate that the food itself was great. I still recommend it for a regular dinner or date as other diners didn't seem unhappy.

Croque madam

Ok, Lapinou has a cute patio I'll give them that, but their food, specifically their prix fixe brunch, was just ok. The brunch menu comes with appetizers for the table, a main (I chose the croque madam), and a dessert. The whole thing costs about 39 dollars. The appetizers we got were just some vegetables (summer crudites), some squash fritters, and some home-made brioche. The brioche was pretty good but every thing else was just mediocre. The croque madame I ordered looked pretty good but to be honest it tastes just ok and was a pain the the butt to cut. I had to resort to eating with my hands because they didn't have any steak knifes they could offer me to cut the super hard bread. The dessert was a small piece of brownie. All this cost 39 dollars. Needless to say I was extremely disappointed. My friend ordered the buckwheat waffle for her main and she was not a fan. She took maybe 3 bites out of it and didn't finish the rest. I would be willing to give Lapinou another try but I definitely would not go back for brunch. I'm going to optimistic here and hope that their dinner menu is better.

Romantic and cozy ambiance, great food, and great service too! I will come back to them again!

Hassleback Fingerlings

Honestly the worst service I have ever had in Toronto. Not the rude I don't give a shit about you bad service but it's the suffocating passive aggressive vibe that triggers you the entire time. We came here to celebrate a friend's birthday. Literally the second we sat down the vibe was so off. The server was aggressive in pushing us to order food and drinks and gave a 10 minute speech trying to sell us a duck that we showed absolutely zero interest in. We didn't order any drinks and that put him off somehow. Perhaps commissions on the drinks and duck? Since we didn't know how big the portions are we started off by ordering 5 dishes to share. The server came and literally said " since you didn't order that many items I will be taking these plates off" in a really passive aggressive tone. As we proceeded to eat and chat, we were constantly bothered by a whole crew of servers asking us if we have finished and to take our plates away. To put into perfectives, we were asked 12 times in 20 minutes to, with the same server coming twice. I had to literally tell one of the servers to stop coming because we were so annoyed at that point. My friend was so annoyed so she decided to finish the one gnocchi on the plate so the server could stop bothering us. As soon as she started eating, this girl came to grab the plate off the table without saying a single word and walked away. My genuine questions are : do the servers here make commissions off taking plates off or is a high end French restaurant like this short on plates?? Also the manager sprints around in circles like he's performing at a circus constantly giving us side eyes ... i really don't know how to feel about this place. As for food, 7/10 for taste. I will say the hassleback fingerlings were really good. The rest were super average. We ended up leaving still hungry cuz we literally felt suffocated being there. At this price point I feel any restaurant in king west can't do more of a whack job like this.

We came here for a group dinner, and were drawn by the beautiful patio - unfortunately we couldn't sit there but the the bar on the inside was beautiful. The food was a modern take on French bistro, which was overall average and had about as many hits as misses. We liked the zucchini salad, snow crab rice (the dashi and furikake were a nice touch), the king salmon, duck, and wagyu (from one of the best farms in the US - Snake River in Idaho - but be warned it's not as melt-in-your-mouth as your classic Japanese wagyus and is near the bottom of the global wagyu totem pole). The sides disappointed as did the salmon crudo, mushroom tart, fingerling potatoes, and the bread - which wasn't even warm. Usually French food underwhelms me but I liked that they revitalized some old dishes with new ingredients and flavors, though I wouldn't say I was blown away - it was just average, and the portions underwhelmed a bit vs the prices. Overall would say it's a meh spot for dinner, on the more expensive side of King West restaurants, and it's more so a place I'd come for drinks as they had nice cocktails and I loved their bar. I had to dock a star as the food came out incredibly slowly - we finished our drinks before we even got our bread, and the whole dinner took 3 hours at 30 mins per course.

Lapinou is located along the busy King St. W where they specialize in French eats with a twist. They have a dreamy patio as well as a large space for indoor dining. I had dined at Lapinou mid-September during the pandemic when dine in was allowed at the time. However, currently as I write this review in November, they only have patio dining as well as takeout. During my experience at Lapinou, I was able to make a reservation fairly easily online. My partner and I sat indoors as it was a bit too chilly to sit in their patio that night. The server that we had was extremely polite, friendly, and attentive - great service throughout the entire night! In terms of food we ordered: - Squash fritters - great start to the meal. - Halloumi - probably the favourite of the night. The dish presented and tasted like a caprese salad but with hallumoni. Very unique and delicious! - Beef striploin with XO sauce - the XO sauce definitely added an extra element to the dish. It was different since I add XO sauce to other things other than steak. Overall, great service and delicious food! We were celebrating a special occasion that night so the food and great service made for a great night out.

An exciting new find in the King West neighbourhood. This was a visit pre-Covid, but I'm still salivating over that foie gras parfait. Amazing food, lovely ambience and service was fantastic! highly recommend. Go to Jess.feed.me on IG for more reciews!

Came with a few friends and my favourite dishes of the night were the duck confit and the escargot! The duck was so crispy and juicy. I could eat the whole thing myself if we weren't sharing. I never had escargot before but it wasn't weird at all and came loaded with garlic! The other dishes were also pretty good and the service was actually attentive and welcoming so I'm not sure if there's been a change in staff recently. I would come back again.

Sea bream was really good. Definitely recommend. Service was good as well - our server had a great personality! He was really personable and was pretty funny to boot! The patio set up was good - it was secluded and cozy and made it a great set up for brunch. Overall pretty great place for brunch in small groups. Definitely recommend coming when it gets warm again.

Squash fritters

Came here on a Friday night and it wasn't too packed. It was a bit stuffy inside as I don't think they turned on the AC but that's alright. The menu is only a page and everything is meant to be shared but the dishes aren't that large. The dishes that really stuck out to me was the snow crab rice and cote de boeuf steak! I could really taste the dashi and Nori in the rice which made it soo delicious and addicting. Very unique as I've never had rice that tasted like this before! Reminded me of sushi rice but 10x better and with a twist. The steak was cooked perfectly medium rare and they were sweet enough to cook a few pieces medium specifically for me. The squash fritters was a big miss as it tasted like I was just eating tasteless fried batter. For dessert we had olive oil cake which was nothing special. The strawberry creme brûlée was very runny, not sure if it was supposed to be like that or if it was undercooked. I would still come back in the future as nothing was horrible just not much was memorable to me.

I had dinner here last night after hearing about the recent opening of this new restaurant. Service was a bit slow at first getting our drinks but then improved as the evening progressed. I started out with the foie gras parfait and I have to say it was absolutely delicious - quite literally one of the best I've ever had. Some of the toast pieces were a bit too "well done" on the edges, but the bread they use is a great choice to pair with the velvety texture of the foie gras. I could've easily had another serving of this and called it a night! Of course, I didn't do that because I just had to try the duck entree. I was really hoping it would be a beautiful confit leg, as this is my favourite preparation of duck, but it was a piece of breast meat served over buckwheat with some turnip and chard mixed in. The server explained how they prepared the duck, which sounded incredible, so I gave it a try. I'll be honest - for me, it was a miss. I am not a big fan of broth in my food, especially when I don't expect it. The server didn't mention it and it wasn't on the menu. In fact, I wouldn't even have ordered it if I'd known. The buckwheat was a bit too salty and the seasoning on the duck itself tasted like it had a bit of sugar mixed in it, which I didn't really like. I also wish it had been a bit more tender, as one piece was too tough to chew and I had to discreetly spit it out. I would not order that dish again. In my experience, duck breast is difficult to perfect, which is why I prefer the leg. Again, that's simply a personal preference and I know many people enjoy the breast meat. My dining companions really enjoyed their meals. In fact, one person said that the beef entree was one of the best she's ever had, which of course made me wish I'd ordered that instead of the duck. Oh well, maybe they'll still have it when I return. They seem to change their menu often, as the sample menu they had posted on the website was a little different from what they gave us in the restaurant. This is good if you don't love the way they do something, but can be bad if you do. I seriously hope they never change that foie gras parfait, though. That alone is worth a repeat visit and is not something you see in many restaurants. I know Lapinou hasn't been open very long, and there's always kinks to work out as you hit your groove. One thing I hope they do change is to lower the volume on the music. It seemed that it got louder right around 8pm which made it extremely difficult to have a conversation at the table. This is one of my biggest pet peeves about dining out. I go out to eat for the social interaction, so when you can't hear the people at your table, it kind of negates the experience. I do not enjoy shouting across the table, especially at a table of six - it's not a big enough table that you should need to raise your voice. It also makes people feel a bit excluded when they can't hear the conversation across the table. If half-stars were an option, I'd have given them 3.5 on this visit, but because the foie gras was so amazing, I bumped them up to 4.

The space also has a wine bar where you can try different wines by the glass or treat yourself in a wine flight or a whole bottle. The by the glass menu changes weekly where you get to have a chance to try new and exciting wines from different regions. I've been to Grape Witches several times but I was able to sit down at their wine bar this time and enjoy a wine flight (three 1oz pours featuring wines from Germany) and a glass of wine. Having the wine flight, I was able to find a new rose that I really enjoyed that I ended up getting a glass of it afterwards. Staff are extremely friendly, personable, and knowledgeable about wine where they can give you suggestions based on your preferences without being pretentious. You are also able to taste any wines you're interested in on the menu to see if you like them as well. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Grape Witches enjoying the delicious selections where I even found new favourites. Overall, a great new wine shop and bar at Waterworks Food Hall. Will definitely be back to try other glasses of wine in the future!

The artichokes were mediocre (loved the sauce they came with). Worst of all was the "Ontario peaches" with the burrata were totally canned peaches - could've even been dole brand! This place has amazing potential with the location and vibe - but the food just was not it. Small portions and the price didn't match what was served. The service was friendly but nothing too crazy. The combination of the peach and mint went really well with the burrata. Light and easy to eat. The patio at night is one of the highlights. The only small complaint was it did take a while to get our wine after we ordered it and a little while to get our check. Otherwise cute spot.

Even though it's not my usual favorite, it was rich, flavorful, and paired nicely with the optional little crisp toasts. The baked white asparagus was a highlight, fresh and flavorful with a touch of minced meat that elevated the dish. The 16oz beef rib steak was cooked well done but still tender and juicy, and the accompanying little peppers added a subtle kick without being overwhelming. The restaurant's atmosphere is dim and cozy, perfect for dates or small gatherings. The staff were enthusiastic, checking in frequently, and even the management stopped by to make sure everything was going smoothly. The seafood was the highlight--shrimp were tender and bouncy, with mussels, clams, and even green beans. The flavors together with the rice were perfectly balanced. The Iberico pork shoulder was tender and flavorful, with a sauce that had a subtle savory depth--absolutely delicious. The fried eggplant was a bit on the salty side, and surprisingly didn't taste much like eggplant (more like fried potato slices), but still enjoyable. Overall, every dish had its highlights, and the dining experience was very satisfying. Overall, Grand Cru Deli serves fantastic food (the apps and desserts were out of this world!) and the place is super cute. A friend mentioned that the colour and decor resembles something from a Wes Anderson film, and he was right - I could see the Grand Budapest reflected in the interior design! We came here for the Winterlicious menu, and since we had three people, we decided to try the entire menu. Brace yourselves for a long and lengthy review! I've organized everything from most to least favourite within each category. Appetizers Broccoli Falafel Salad This was a nice and fresh app, and my favourite of the bunch. You can taste the broccoli bits in the falafel, but it's a lovely flavour. I never thought it could work together like this! The sunflower tahini and smoked labneh were a pleasant and nice touch, and I loved the microplaned / spiralized cucumbers. Seasonal Country Pate This was definitely bang for your buck! A hefty chunk of pate was served on a plate with baguette and crusty bread pieces. Since it's pate, the app was on the heavier side, but still an enjoyable light bite. Matzah Ball Soup This was my first time having matzah, and it was quite interesting! To be honest, this was my least favourite... the schmaltz / chicken fat with dough highly resembled a Chinese fatty fish ball of sorts. The chicken broth was lightly flavoured, filled with celery and carrot pieces. Mains Trout Amandine This trout was so buttery and flaky, tender and moist! Topped with thin slices of almond slivers, there was a nice juxtaposition with the juicy filet and the crunchy bits. As the fish was lightly seasoned, the fried capers added a great punch of salty flavour. The pomme puree (mashed potatoes) was also very hearty and rich; it was a nice consistency and felt so comforting. We unanimously voted this to be the best main. Eggplant Parmesan I was pleasantly surprised at this dish; despite being vegetarian, it had such a rich flavour! It was likely attributed to the mozzarella and the arugula pesto - when eaten together, the entire dish tasted like a lighter lasagna. The side of arugula helped balance the flavours. Braised Beef Short Rib While good, this dish was quite standard. The braised beef was melt-in-your-mouth-tender, but wasn't very seasoned. I found the creamed spinach a little heavy, and the white beans a little bland. Dessert Chocolate Chip Cookie This chocolate chip and miso cookie with salted caramel served in a hot, petite cast iron and topped with vanilla ice cream was the perfect contrast of all that you can think of. Sweet and salty, hot and cold, crunchy and soft, hard and runny, etc. It was such a hearty and comforting dessert! We all raved at this dish. Creme Brulee I'm not typically a fan of creme brulee as I find them to be a little too rich. However, the light, floral taste of the earl grey really stood out and made this dish! I kept scooping bite after bite. Very well executed, and not too sweet at all! Chess Pie This cornmeal-based dessert was my least favourite, although I must say that it had a fantastic and crunchy crust. The custard filling was nice, but I found it too sweet - in fact, the fino sherry cream made it even more sweet. Overall, I really liked Grand Cru Deli. The food was very well executed, and I was pleasantly surprised at the calibre and taste of the dishes. I'd definitely come again to try their regular menu, and have a glass of wine or two!

The location was ideal for theatre-goers, as it was right across from the TIFF building and a stone's throw away from a lot of theatres in the area. The interior was spacious and modern, with a lot of tables and seatings extending to the back of the restaurant. It was quite empty when we went on a weekend afternoon, so service was prompt. The food was excellent!! They put creative spins on classic Thai dishes that turned out very well. Review of the dishes: 1) Raw Oysters (fresh raw BC oysters with roasted chili jam, fried shallots, and house nam jim seafood sauce) - They were like raw oysters in typical Western seafood restaurants, but with a Thai twist. "House Nam Jim Seafood" is a Thai dipping sauce commonly used for steamed or grilled seafood, made of garlic, chilies, lime juice, fish sauce, and cilantro. This sauce, in addition to the roasted chili jam, created a mouthful burst of flavour when the oyster was eaten in one go. The roasted chili jam created a heat effect in the throat, which made it warming. The fried shallots added a nice crunch, in contrast to the smooth raw oyster. This was definitely a unique spin to the plain raw oysters. 2) Larb Crispy Brussels Sprouts (fried Brussels sprouts with lemongrass, cilantro, lime juice, chili flakes, toasted rice powder, fried shallots, and coriander) - I was excited to see a vegetarian version of larb on the menu! Larb is a Lao dish typically made with minced meat, fresh herbs, lime juice, fish sauce, and toasted ground rice. Instead of using meat, they subbed it with crispy Brussels sprouts. I liked the crunch of the Brussels sprouts, but found the dish to be too salty. 3) Eggplant Salad (fried eggplant with black tiger prawns, mint, shallots, Thai chili-garlic lime dressing, and sliced medium soft-boiled egg) - This reminded me of the Filipino dish of tortang talong, except the egg was served on the side instead of being pan-fried and coating the eggplant. The eggplant in this dish was fried and quite sweet & spicy, which I didn't really like. I liked the pieces of black tiger prawns, shallots, and sliced medium soft-boiled egg surrounding it though. The egg especially was perfectly soft with a bit of a gooey egg yolk. What surprised me was the presence of pomegranates in the Eggplant Salad. I always see pomegranates as a common ingredient in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisines, but never in Thai dishes. It was a pleasant surprise, and it showed that the creative fusion of Thai, Filipino, and Middle Eastern / Mediterranean elements and ingredients worked well here. 4) SS Egg Fried Rice (jasmine riceberry stir-fried with eggs, green onion, and garlic) + jumbo lump crab meat add-on - This was the dish that made me come to Same Same, and it did not disappoint! I thought the fried rice tasted unique compared to the fried rice I've had at other Thai and Chinese restaurants. It had a strong wok-char look and flavour, and they used jasmine riceberry, which made it taste more chewy and nutty. They did not skimp on the jumbo lump crab meat, and there were "jumbo" pieces of real crab. It seems rare to get real crab (and a lot of it) in fried rice in Thai and Chinese restaurants, so this fried rice was a winner for me. 5) SS Pad Thai (fresh rice noodles, tofu, eggs, peanuts, tamarind, chives, bean sprouts, banana blossom, lime) + black tiger prawns add-on - The tofu and bean sprouts were the stars in this dish. Although the black tiger prawns that we chose as an add-on were really big, for some reason I really liked the tofu in this pad thai more (more flavourful). They used fresh instead of dry rice noodles, which we could tell because the noodles clumped together quickly as soon as it cooled down. 6) Wok Vegetables (stir-fried yu choy sum and green beans) - As simple as this "side dish" was, this was my favourite. We asked for it to be cooked without any sauce because that's how I like my veggies (not a fan of vegetables doused in so much oyster sauce / any thick sauce). They were able to accommodate our customization request, and the dish came out perfect. The green veggies (yu choy sum and green beans) were also still quite crisp and not overcooked, which earned them extra points.

Was so excited to try Same Same and their Samemer-delicious menu for July!…read more Came today with my plus one and we ordered: Appetizers: - deep fried wingette with ma kwen jeaw sauce: I felt the sauce was a bit too sour and salty yet addicting! I kept coming back to it. It came with 10 wings and it was deep fried really nicely, didn't feel too oily. - shrimp toast: house made brioche with cucumber relish and added the peanut sauce espuma. I love bread at baseline and this brioche was so nice and crispy. The cucumber relish was refreshing and slightly sweet. Mains - same same pad thai (vegetarian): now that I'm reading the menu it looks like they use fresh rice noodle but I found that the noodles were SUPER chewy, more chewy than other thai places I had. I appreciate the freshness of the noodles but would also liked if it were a bit easier to chew. Would also have liked if there was more veg in the meal. - ngowpochana chicken cashew: this came with crispy chicken thigh stir fried with (really SPICY) dried chilis and cashew nuts with a side of mixed purple? rice. The rice was tasty and the chicken was really crispy! Came out in small pieces and it was good but was not blown away. Desserts - mango sticky rice: so so good, love how they put butterfly pea in the sticky rice. Mango was ripe and soft, coconut cream was strong, and the jasmine riceberry puff added a great crunch to the dessert. - pandanas kaya toasted brioche: I would return for this dessert. My partner and I LOVED this dessert and how carmelized the toast was, it was divine. Final thoughts We loved the desserts and appetizers but felt the mains weren't super special. Staff were friendly. It did take us a while to get our food- appetizers came quick but took more than half an hour for our mains to come and waited more for our dessert. It was pretty busy but maybe they're still getting their groove as the Samemer delicious promotion brought in an influx of customers.

We were group of 6 dining for a special occasion. When we made our reservation, the staff offered…read moreus the semi-private table by the window. It was nice to have a more secluded spot, but the seating was quite drafty/chilly and dark, so didn't quite capture the warm ambiance of the rest of the restaurant. We were also offered a wonderful family style tasting menu for $90 per person. Overall, the food was fantastic, especially the seafood options. The dishes were innovative and fresh. Stand-out dishes: - Smoked Fish - chips n' dip - Scallop (raw) - chicken fat, green strawberry, serrano pepper - Tomato - feta, green olive, red onion - Sea Bream - peas, cumin, scallion - soooo good I would re-order all of the above in a heartbeat. So delicious. The following dishes were good but not amazing: - Bread - cultured butter - Ravioli - cheese curd, potato, leek - Crumb Cake - coffee, pumpkin - Quince - foie gras, sponge toffee And the following dishes had some flaws (though still enjoyable): - Spaghetti - chorizo, peppers, stracciateila (way too salty) - Half Chicken - truffle, green bean, gravy (chicken was quite dry) The portion sizes were sufficient. And the service was really attentive and quick. I wish they had more non-alcoholic drink options.

Everything we ordered at Grey Gardens was well done. The meal was perfectly paced and permitted…read moreconversation between dishes. The menu has a number of options that have good variety and still pair well no matter what you decide to order. My personal favourite was the smoked fish. We made a last minute reservation, and we were meant to head out by a certain time, but the host told us that she was able to make some adjustments for us to keep the table for longer. The interior is cohesive and is a surprising change from the Kensington neighbourhood outside.
