Discreetly nested in Kensington market, I visited Grey Gardens earlier for a 5:45pm dinner. We opted for "grey Mondays" which was a prix fix menu once a month, along with the wine pairing. Right off the bat the hostess and servers were kind and sincere, and wished us a happy anniversary. Throughout the meal they were attentive and provided insight into each bite they served. My favourite was the Albacore, it was so balanced and packed full of flavour. Each dish was unique and seasonal, and the wine pairings were well thought out. Highly recommend for a nice date night or special occasion!

"There are some nice people in the world, you know, I just don't happen to be related to any of them." -Little Edie, Grey Gardens, 1975 Came to Grey Gardens for my birthday dinner on a recent trip to Toronto where my boyfriend lives. We both love seafood & were excited to try their inventive small plates. We had: SNACKS Smoked Fish ~ chips n' dip Oysters & Shrimp Cocktail CRUDO Hamachi ~ jalapeño, dill, pomelo VEGETABLES Bean Salad ~ feta, yogurt, curry oil MEDIUM Skate ~ matsutake, broccoli, black garlic Everything was very good: light, fresh & flavourful. They also brought out a lovely dessert with a candle and birthday message at the end. Ambience was relaxed and casual but it was quite full on this Fiday night. Since it was my birthday dinner, my boyfriend & I had decided to dress up. We definitely looked out of place & quite a few people stared ("Take a picture! It'll last longer) although it made it fun! We tend to overdress in Miami all the time. Would absolutely return but maybe leave the chandelier earrings, strapless cocktail dress & stilettos at home next time... orrrrrr maybe not!

Grey Gardens is tucked away in an unsuspecting spot so it feels like a hidden gem. The dining room is cozy and it's spectacular to sit at the bar and watch the work being done in the open kitchen. Feels intimate not just in size, but in the service of the staff that are all friendly and attentive. Overall we really enjoyed our dinner and drinks. I love a small, well organized menu. It shows intention and here you can expect every single dish you order to be made to near perfection. We enjoyed them all but the standouts for me were the bean salad and the chicken. The smoked fish dip was great and tasted like a much more elevated French onion dip. The hamachi was beautiful and citrusy. The bean salad had a great yogurt sauce. I could eat whatever sauce was served under the chicken with a spoon! It was creamy and delicious and the chicken was cooked perfectly tender with a crisp skin. I had a glass of Chenin Blanc and the citrus spritz while my partner tried two different beers. We enjoyed them all. The service was incredible and what you would expect at most fine dining restaurants. Despite how busy it was - I never had an empty glass of water or a dirty plate in front of me. Our server was also very patient and walked through what would be gluten free/gluten friendly on the menu. So happy they were able to make an accommodation for us to reserve a spot for dinner last minute. Would love to come back

Grey Gardens effortlessly balances charm with sophistication - with decor blending antique warmth with a modern touch that gives the space so much personality. The open kitchen adds an intimate touch, and massages my brain the same way as when I watch Tiktoks with Subway Surfer in the background (minus the brain rot). And with its ambient lighting, its the perfect spot for a romantic date night or a cozy, refined dinner with friends. We ordered the Mandilli, Pickerel, Endive, and Crudo, and our favourite was easily the Mandilli. Long, wide pasta draped in crab, Calabrian chilli, and Parmesan - an absolute must-order! I also really loved the Crudo - and if you're as into raw fish, crudo, or sashimi as I am, you'll really appreciate the delicate yet punchy flavors. Overall, I highly recommend Grey Gardens! Given their carefully thought out menu, welcoming service, and cozy ambiance - I'll definitely be back!

I had a solo reservation at Grey Gardens for my birthday dinner, I'm a huge fan of Le swan (also by Jen Agg) and I heard that Grey Gardens does half portions. Great experience! I love the ambiance with the candles and grey vintage theme. The hostess and my server were both very attentive. There is an open kitchen so if you want to sit at the bar you can watch the cooks prepare the food. They have an extensive wine and drinks menu but I stuck with water. I ordered oysters, a half portion of steak tartare, a half portion of the ravioli and a half portion of the gnocchi. The oysters were well shucked, fresh, and sweet and were served with fresh horseradish. The letdown of the night was the steak tartare, it was sooo salty, and there was no egg yolk to balance that (not sure if it's because I got the half portion). Thank you to the server who refilled my water at least 5 times. The gnocchi was pillowy and the sauce was simple but comforting. The ravioli was amazing as well, the caramelized onion filling had a sweetness which complimented the saltiness of the duck sausage. They also kindly served me some complimentary cinnamon ice cream to end the night. Prices here are reasonable, I was very full at the end of my meal. The washrooms are clean and on the same floor. Highly recommend this restaurant for a date night, great vibes and food! Their menu is updated regularly so there is always something new to try. I will be back to try more of their seafood!

I've been longing to try Grey Gardens and I'm happy I finally did! While the menu is small, it's jam packed with a variety of unique dishes and flavours. The mushroom dish, brimming with umami, is probably the best I've ever had. The Arctic char crudo was flavorful and well balanced. And the lamb pasta was good and unique. Didn't love the pesto ravioli - a bit too earthy for my liking.

    A delicious signature spritz cocktail.

I have now been to Grey Gardens, three or four times and I love it. The ambiance is lovely. It is a tight squeeze, but the acoustics are such that it's not too loud that you can't hear the person you're with. I shared the leak appetizer and had a delicious crab pasta. On the drinks front I started with a Negroni and then a lovely glass of Chardonnay. Although the food was quite slow for our main, the person serving us said that she would be happy to provide us with a complementary dessert, and although we didn't think it was necessary, we happily accepted. I'm so pleased this little gem is thriving!

A spot that's been on my list for a while! Tucked away in kensington market, its unassuming on the outside, but has a nice romantic ambiance on the inside. However, the tables are quite close together and I did wish we had a little more space to maneuver. We had 5 dishes, smoked fish dip, beef tartare, cauliflower, tagliatelle, and pork chop. The smoked fish is a classic and must-have. It felt creamy and was delicious. The beef tartare was quite good, but they came with small herbaceous baked breads? I think I prefer a crusty sourdough or crostini to complement beef tartare. The cauliflower had a mushroom mixture which was delicious and a side sauce that was VERY lemony, almost too much so. The tagliatelle was cooked perfectly, the pasta having a great bite, and the sauce and duck sausage was fantastic. Probably the favourite dish was the giant smoked pork chop was cooked perfectly, was very filling, and had us picking at the bone. Also came with a great sauce and some Brussels.

Hidden gem in Kensington Market. Unassuming from the exterior with a pleasant interior with three seating styles: bar seating, tables and kitchen bar seating. The menu is limited but has a good variety fo choices. We had the 7 layer dip (good but pricey; I would probably try the smoked fish dip next time for a more economical starter). The Celery Root and Scallop dishes were amazing. Pretty plating and a perfect balance of flavours. The Tagliatelle was a bit underwhelming compared to the other dishes; it's decent but nothing special. I would try the Hand Torn Noodles next time. The Skate on the other hand was amazing - it looked and tasted almost like a brisket and was served in a buttery foam with lots of sauce. Would definitely recommend and would come back again!

If you ever wondered where the upwardly-mobile foodie hipsters dine, this is the place! The food is fantastic, the ambiance is casual, yet elegant, and the service is down to earth. Great meal experience overall. This place gets high accolades (it also appears on the Michelin guide honourable mentions), and it did not disappoint. Food: 5/5 ======== The food is most delicious. Each dish was well-thought-out. You can tell that they are serious about their food, as they have a big open gallery kitchen that is teaming with activity. Here's what we got: Smoked fish appetizer - $16. Most delicious spread. Very smokey. Was served with super thin potato chips. At first I thought it was weird to have a chip instead of a cracker, but it actually worked beautifully. Must try dish. Kampachi - $22 - delicious crudo. Must try. Celery root salad - $18 - very nice. Cauliflower - $18 - very nice. Skate - $35 - very delicious. Was very rich, like a braised beef. Five Spice Cake - $12. Yum! I LOVE five spice, and the cake did the spice mix justice. One complaint I had was that the cocktail list was basically non-existent. The one cocktail I tried (Bitter Spritz 18$) was not great (diluted, sweet and no bitters). The wine options were very expensive. I opted for the Saison beer (Burdock Tuesday $9), and I was not disappointed. Service: 4/5 ========= The service was mostly friendly, but a little lukewarm. The server knew the dishes very well, and was able to remember the options by heart. Very casual style of service overall (complete with hipster scruffy outfits), which is somewhat nice, and at the same time leaves you wanting a little more warmth and elegance. Ambiance: 5/5 ============ The ambiance overall is very nice. Let's start with the fact that the restaurant is located in hipster-central: Kensington Market. At the same time, it's definitely elevated for the neighbourhood. The place is very casual, but not without elegance. The decor is grungy, but not without style. The lights are nice and dim. It's definitely warm and rather romantic. You could definitely come here on a first date. The playlist was amazing. I kept wanting to Shazam the songs. Value: 3/5 ======== The small plates are rather expensive. You won't leave here stuffed. At the same time, you feel like you are getting rewarded with great tasting plates. Keep up the good work, Grey Gardens.

    Citrus Spritz & Old Fashioned
    Connie L.

Quaint French restaurant that has a unique rotating menu. Their drinks were a bit lacking in flavor, I got the Citrus Spritz and my boyfriend got an Old Fashioned. The spritz was a bit flat. The star of the night was the ravioli - the potato and cheese filling was utterly delicious. Each bite was a perfect cheesy morsel. My boyfriend got the lamb shoulder (not pictured) that was a bit tough? Normally you'd expect the meat to melt in your mouth more but it was a bit hard to chew, not to mention the flavor was just ok. The best part of the lamb dish were the veggies on top. Service was good, we booked a reservation the week before and were seated promptly. Overall a decent experience.

SO and I were in town and found this place on a whim via Yelp.  The outside was unassuming and a little non-descript, but who cares when there's good food indoors.  There were tables along the wall and seating at the kitchen bar...we sat at the nearest corner of the bar with a line of sight to all the staff moving and cooking with intention and care.  We asked for suggestions and ordered pretty much what was recommended by the knowledgeable staff. The 7 layer dip came out 1st and we were feeling full just after this...it's comprised of different layers of goodness like guacomole and topped with a good amount of trout roe with chips being in abundance...very decadent! A small dish, delicate slices of fluke, came next...seasoned with some oil, lemon and salt along with some greens on top...a perfect, light appetizer. We also tried the tomato salad, which was hearty and nicely dressed and seasoned. The last dish, cod, was fresh and perfectly cooked...not overly seasoned or sauced, accompanied by broccolini...just delicious! Bottom line, the service was attentive and the food was above average and reasonably priced.  There's plenty of value here and we'll definitely return on our next trip back to Toronto.

Cute spot in Kensington. Food was fantastic but portions are pretty small. I recommend the smoked fish dip as started. Skip the bread as nothing special. They have a wide selection of wine, I got the orange wine and it was delicious

The by the glass menu changes weekly where you get to have a chance to try new and exciting wines from different regions. I've been to Grape Witches several times but I was able to sit down at their wine bar this time and enjoy a wine flight (three 1oz pours featuring wines from Germany) and a glass of wine. Having the wine flight, I was able to find a new rose that I really enjoyed that I ended up getting a glass of it afterwards. Staff are extremely friendly, personable, and knowledgeable about wine where they can give you suggestions based on your preferences without being pretentious. You are also able to taste any wines you're interested in on the menu to see if you like them as well. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Grape Witches enjoying the delicious selections where I even found new favourites. Overall, a great new wine shop and bar at Waterworks Food Hall. This is a wine bar - the house lager was bad (maybe my own bad decision) and the red I got was fine ... nothing to write home about. The artichokes were mediocre (loved the sauce they came with). Worst of all was the "Ontario peaches" with the burrata were totally canned peaches - could've even been dole brand! This place has amazing potential with the location and vibe - but the food just was not it. Small portions and the price didn't match what was served. The service was friendly but nothing too crazy. The combination of the peach and mint went really well with the burrata. Light and easy to eat. The patio at night is one of the highlights. The only small complaint was it did take a while to get our wine after we ordered it and a little while to get our check. Otherwise cute spot.

The saffron-infused rice soaked up the rich seafood broth perfectly. You can ask the staff to remove the shells if you want to eat more elegantly. The Spanish Octopus was tender and meaty--so fresh, I could have eaten more! I also tried the 36-month aged Joselito Iberico ham. Even though it's not my usual favorite, it was rich, flavorful, and paired nicely with the optional little crisp toasts. The baked white asparagus was a highlight, fresh and flavorful with a touch of minced meat that elevated the dish. The 16oz beef rib steak was cooked well done but still tender and juicy, and the accompanying little peppers added a subtle kick without being overwhelming. The restaurant's atmosphere is dim and cozy, perfect for dates or small gatherings. The staff were enthusiastic, checking in frequently, and even the management stopped by to make sure everything was going smoothly. The Iberico pork shoulder was tender and flavorful, with a sauce that had a subtle savory depth--absolutely delicious. The fried eggplant was a bit on the salty side, and surprisingly didn't taste much like eggplant (more like fried potato slices), but still enjoyable. Overall, Grand Cru Deli serves fantastic food (the apps and desserts were out of this world!) and the place is super cute. A friend mentioned that the colour and decor resembles something from a Wes Anderson film, and he was right - I could see the Grand Budapest reflected in the interior design! We came here for the Winterlicious menu, and since we had three people, we decided to try the entire menu. Brace yourselves for a long and lengthy review! I've organized everything from most to least favourite within each category. Appetizers Broccoli Falafel Salad This was a nice and fresh app, and my favourite of the bunch. You can taste the broccoli bits in the falafel, but it's a lovely flavour. I never thought it could work together like this! The sunflower tahini and smoked labneh were a pleasant and nice touch, and I loved the microplaned / spiralized cucumbers. Seasonal Country Pate This was definitely bang for your buck! A hefty chunk of pate was served on a plate with baguette and crusty bread pieces. Since it's pate, the app was on the heavier side, but still an enjoyable light bite. Matzah Ball Soup This was my first time having matzah, and it was quite interesting! To be honest, this was my least favourite... the schmaltz / chicken fat with dough highly resembled a Chinese fatty fish ball of sorts. The chicken broth was lightly flavoured, filled with celery and carrot pieces. Mains Trout Amandine This trout was so buttery and flaky, tender and moist! Topped with thin slices of almond slivers, there was a nice juxtaposition with the juicy filet and the crunchy bits. As the fish was lightly seasoned, the fried capers added a great punch of salty flavour. The pomme puree (mashed potatoes) was also very hearty and rich; it was a nice consistency and felt so comforting. We unanimously voted this to be the best main. Eggplant Parmesan I was pleasantly surprised at this dish; despite being vegetarian, it had such a rich flavour! It was likely attributed to the mozzarella and the arugula pesto - when eaten together, the entire dish tasted like a lighter lasagna. The side of arugula helped balance the flavours. Braised Beef Short Rib While good, this dish was quite standard. The braised beef was melt-in-your-mouth-tender, but wasn't very seasoned. I found the creamed spinach a little heavy, and the white beans a little bland. Dessert Chocolate Chip Cookie This chocolate chip and miso cookie with salted caramel served in a hot, petite cast iron and topped with vanilla ice cream was the perfect contrast of all that you can think of. Sweet and salty, hot and cold, crunchy and soft, hard and runny, etc. It was such a hearty and comforting dessert! We all raved at this dish. Creme Brulee I'm not typically a fan of creme brulee as I find them to be a little too rich. However, the light, floral taste of the earl grey really stood out and made this dish! I kept scooping bite after bite. Very well executed, and not too sweet at all! Chess Pie This cornmeal-based dessert was my least favourite, although I must say that it had a fantastic and crunchy crust. The custard filling was nice, but I found it too sweet - in fact, the fino sherry cream made it even more sweet. Overall, I really liked Grand Cru Deli. The food was very well executed, and I was pleasantly surprised at the calibre and taste of the dishes. I'd definitely come again to try their regular menu, and have a glass of wine or two!

Eating here does feel like I packed a nice picnic basket and have a nice casual lunch in the park. There are 3 "hot" entrée items which are available for dinner only. IMHO which is quite limit in choices. A high end deli sandwich bar might be a hard sell especially at this price point. Maybe some lunch special feature offering and additional items for the dinner menu might brings in more business?!

The interior was spacious and modern, with a lot of tables and seatings extending to the back of the restaurant. It was quite empty when we went on a weekend afternoon, so service was prompt. The food was excellent!! They put creative spins on classic Thai dishes that turned out very well. Review of the dishes: 1) Raw Oysters (fresh raw BC oysters with roasted chili jam, fried shallots, and house nam jim seafood sauce) - They were like raw oysters in typical Western seafood restaurants, but with a Thai twist. "House Nam Jim Seafood" is a Thai dipping sauce commonly used for steamed or grilled seafood, made of garlic, chilies, lime juice, fish sauce, and cilantro. This sauce, in addition to the roasted chili jam, created a mouthful burst of flavour when the oyster was eaten in one go. The roasted chili jam created a heat effect in the throat, which made it warming. The fried shallots added a nice crunch, in contrast to the smooth raw oyster. This was definitely a unique spin to the plain raw oysters. 2) Larb Crispy Brussels Sprouts (fried Brussels sprouts with lemongrass, cilantro, lime juice, chili flakes, toasted rice powder, fried shallots, and coriander) - I was excited to see a vegetarian version of larb on the menu! Larb is a Lao dish typically made with minced meat, fresh herbs, lime juice, fish sauce, and toasted ground rice. Instead of using meat, they subbed it with crispy Brussels sprouts. I liked the crunch of the Brussels sprouts, but found the dish to be too salty. 3) Eggplant Salad (fried eggplant with black tiger prawns, mint, shallots, Thai chili-garlic lime dressing, and sliced medium soft-boiled egg) - This reminded me of the Filipino dish of tortang talong, except the egg was served on the side instead of being pan-fried and coating the eggplant. The eggplant in this dish was fried and quite sweet & spicy, which I didn't really like. I liked the pieces of black tiger prawns, shallots, and sliced medium soft-boiled egg surrounding it though. The egg especially was perfectly soft with a bit of a gooey egg yolk. What surprised me was the presence of pomegranates in the Eggplant Salad. I always see pomegranates as a common ingredient in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisines, but never in Thai dishes. It was a pleasant surprise, and it showed that the creative fusion of Thai, Filipino, and Middle Eastern / Mediterranean elements and ingredients worked well here. 4) SS Egg Fried Rice (jasmine riceberry stir-fried with eggs, green onion, and garlic) + jumbo lump crab meat add-on - This was the dish that made me come to Same Same, and it did not disappoint! I thought the fried rice tasted unique compared to the fried rice I've had at other Thai and Chinese restaurants. It had a strong wok-char look and flavour, and they used jasmine riceberry, which made it taste more chewy and nutty. They did not skimp on the jumbo lump crab meat, and there were "jumbo" pieces of real crab. It seems rare to get real crab (and a lot of it) in fried rice in Thai and Chinese restaurants, so this fried rice was a winner for me. 5) SS Pad Thai (fresh rice noodles, tofu, eggs, peanuts, tamarind, chives, bean sprouts, banana blossom, lime) + black tiger prawns add-on - The tofu and bean sprouts were the stars in this dish. Although the black tiger prawns that we chose as an add-on were really big, for some reason I really liked the tofu in this pad thai more (more flavourful). They used fresh instead of dry rice noodles, which we could tell because the noodles clumped together quickly as soon as it cooled down. 6) Wok Vegetables (stir-fried yu choy sum and green beans) - As simple as this "side dish" was, this was my favourite. We asked for it to be cooked without any sauce because that's how I like my veggies (not a fan of vegetables doused in so much oyster sauce / any thick sauce). They were able to accommodate our customization request, and the dish came out perfect. The green veggies (yu choy sum and green beans) were also still quite crisp and not overcooked, which earned them extra points.

Was so excited to try Same Same and their Samemer-delicious menu for July!…read more Came today with my plus one and we ordered: Appetizers: - deep fried wingette with ma kwen jeaw sauce: I felt the sauce was a bit too sour and salty yet addicting! I kept coming back to it. It came with 10 wings and it was deep fried really nicely, didn't feel too oily. - shrimp toast: house made brioche with cucumber relish and added the peanut sauce espuma. I love bread at baseline and this brioche was so nice and crispy. The cucumber relish was refreshing and slightly sweet. Mains - same same pad thai (vegetarian): now that I'm reading the menu it looks like they use fresh rice noodle but I found that the noodles were SUPER chewy, more chewy than other thai places I had. I appreciate the freshness of the noodles but would also liked if it were a bit easier to chew. Would also have liked if there was more veg in the meal. - ngowpochana chicken cashew: this came with crispy chicken thigh stir fried with (really SPICY) dried chilis and cashew nuts with a side of mixed purple? rice. The rice was tasty and the chicken was really crispy! Came out in small pieces and it was good but was not blown away. Desserts - mango sticky rice: so so good, love how they put butterfly pea in the sticky rice. Mango was ripe and soft, coconut cream was strong, and the jasmine riceberry puff added a great crunch to the dessert. - pandanas kaya toasted brioche: I would return for this dessert. My partner and I LOVED this dessert and how carmelized the toast was, it was divine. Final thoughts We loved the desserts and appetizers but felt the mains weren't super special. Staff were friendly. It did take us a while to get our food- appetizers came quick but took more than half an hour for our mains to come and waited more for our dessert. It was pretty busy but maybe they're still getting their groove as the Samemer delicious promotion brought in an influx of customers.

They always put the leafs game on when they're playing which is Mae's them a reliable game spot. Over the past couple of years I felt their food quality has slowly declined but today was different. Way exceeded my expectations. We started with a corona zero and ranch water (passion fruit flavour) we were both really happy with it. The didn't skimp on the tequila. We started with the Brussels sprouts which is always a great choice from here. Crispy on the outside and not an overwhelming Brussels sprout taste. This is likely because there is a generous sprinkling of grated parm and a great amount of dip. We tried the crispy tuna sushi. The tuna was beautifully marinated, so flavourful. And the sushi was nice and crispy. The vodka pie was a seasonal item and when we saw it listed, we knew we needed to try it. The sauce- amazing, the press was nice and flaky and light and really tasty. And the soccer Sada added nice saltines and flavour without being too overwhelming. For happy hour, the apps and pizzas were $5 off, and the ranch water was $5. I'd come back for the pizza alone! Jeans was our waitress and she was great!
