I tried to battle my rat problems alone with traps and bait and ultimately called Jeremy at Specialty Rodent. Jeremy came back, assessed the situation, and came back with a clear plan of actions. He even got a dead decaying rat out of my car hood for me. He immediately found rat access points. They're not easy to find alone, and also requires going into dirty wet or nasty spaces. I mean Jeremy crawled under my deck, crawl space, checked out the attic. It's not an easy or clean job! Then spent a few weeks setting traps, blocking access points with hardware wire and concrete or flashing, and came by often to check traps, pick up dead rodents, and check activity. I went from rat problem to no rats in a few weeks. After confirming no activity, we sanitized my crawl space and redid parts of my insulation and vapor barrier - which had rat poo all over it. We needed diagnosis of squirrel vs rats. Jeremy was able to come out to the property early the next week and discerned that a squirrel made the hole, but rats were the problem. After the assessment he came back the next day and got the hole screened over which was high up - approximately 2 1/2 stories- traps set, overhanging branches clipped and bait stations set. I'll update if they are any issues- but it's looking good so far. I like that he is a small business, is service-oriented and does not upsell. Also like that he can assess and deal with squirrel or rat. We were going to get a new roof on my mom's deck when both the estimator and I noticed a steady stream of yellow jackets entering two holes in the side of my mom's house, very close to the deck roof that needed to be replaced. I quickly contacted a handful of exterminators to see if any of them could come out before the roofers were expected the next day. Two replied within a few hours and said they couldn't come until the next week, and one company said they could come the same day in the evening for $200 extra! When Jeremy from this company responded, he said he could come out at 8am the next day! This was perfect because the roofers were scheduled to come at 9! The next morning, Jeremy came out before 8am and sprayed powder into the nest. It really seemed to work right away, and he even said there was a guarantee in case he needed to come back. So, we had a rodent/rat intrusion into our basement. We noticed feces alt the base of our sewer line within the basement walls. Absolutely disconcerting, to say the least. We called this outfit to take a look and give recommendations as to how to handle this. We were given a quote that, to my mind, was exorbitant. It only included placing a few traps and cleaning up what feces were seen (vacuuming), and minor exterior flashing under siding which wasn't necessary' as there was no way rats could introduce themselves into the basement that route. Now, I'm not without responsibility here. I gave the go-ahead. However, after agreeing to remediation and fee assoc with it, they told us of the fact the basement had a drain cover that was totally open. A CLEAR avenue of intrusion. If they did not see that at the start, they are derelict in their duties. I'm sure they were not, as after they "liquid nailed" the floor drain shut, it was effectively solved. They were obligated to return to check the traps and NEVER made an effort, nor responded to inquiries. In short, they hosed us from the start. They knew our issue & sucked quick cash from us because people freak out about rodent infestations, which I get. Totally. Be forewarned. read more

Update: Inspection report and estimate has now been received. Unfortunately, my trust was lost in this process so I will not proceed in doing business with this company. --------------------------------------------------- Be careful using this company and be sure to set clear expectations up front. Firstly, Yelp shows that they offer free estimates, they don't. They charge $195 + tax for an inspection, which is fine because time is money. BUT, what they don't tell you is that you won't get a written report of that inspection until you pay upfront. Jeremy came to my rental property yesterday to perform said inspection (and to be fair, he removed one trapped rodent while there). We spoke briefly on the phone after but it was really difficult to understand him either due to reception or low volume issues so I asked him to send me the written report. He said he'd do it that night or first thing the next morning. I didn't receive the report the next morning, so I checked in with him mid-day, no response. Then, after 7:00 pm, he texted me that he was waiting on payment before he would send me the inspection report - essentially asking me to pay for services not yet rendered. What good is an inspection without a report? I have absolutely nothing to show for the fee. I tried to reason with him, explaining that I've never heard of having to pay BEFORE receiving an inspection report. And he told me that it's company policy. I told him that I would not proceed in doing business with him if I was expected to pay up front for services. Even though I didn't feel that I should have paid without receiving the report, I did. I'm not one to cheat my way out of an agreement. Let's see how long I have to wait before I get that inspection report. I'll update my review and the rating if and when I receive it. And just as a side note, I was excited to support this business because of good reviews and it looks like a small, family-run shop. But after receiving a strange text from them at 3:18 am the morning before the inspection that included just a laughing emoji and my last name, I should have known the professionalism was lacking, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt. We live in the woods and had a problem with mice in the crawlspace. I called a few different "well known" companies in the area and all I heard was "contract". I want the mice gone, I don't need a monthly contract to have someone come out and trap mice. I need the access point sealed first and then get the mice trapped and removed. Nobody wanted to stop the mice from gaining access to the crawl space. It seemed kind of pointless to hire someone to trap all the mice in Snohomish county that found a pathway under my house before the entry was blocked. I tried one more company, Specialty Rodent. I sent an email via their website one evening and the next day Jeremy contacted me. We talked about the problem and the very first thing he said was we need to find and block where the mice were coming in from. Now we were talking, someone who actually knows what they are talking about! My house is a manufactured home and had a gap between the house and the foundation all the way around it. Jeremy came out and explained what needed to be done. I have 2 big decks along the front and back of the house, he said we may need to remove some deck boards to gain access to the header board and seal up the house. As he was walking through the scenarios I could tell he was coming up with a plan on the fly based on this situation and how the house was built. That is years of experience at work right there which made me feel confident he could get rid of the problem. We scheduled the work and he was done in a little over 2 days. He applied flashing between the deck header boards and the foundation, sealed up a hole he found chewed in a fascia board and screened up a couple other holes. He removed a bunch of deck boards and replaced a couple that broke in the process...try to find one of the "big companies" that will do that. Then Jeremy put out traps and started catching the mice. Jeremy is a stand up guy, friendly and really good to work with...a rare breed in this day and age of of the "sign this 3 year contract" pest control industry. He doesn't do contracts, he just rids your house of what ever critter needs to go and he does a good job. He is a good guy, a family man and small business owner trying to make an honest living the right way. He knows his stuff. He knows the creatures habits and he knows the industry standards, but his best weapon is his years of experience in the war on pests. He does what he says he will do and he does it when he says he will. He stays in contact and keeps you informed of the situation at hand. I knew I had a rodent problem, I'd heard movement and scratching in the ceiling and wall for months. All pest control's not created equal...I contacted several, one did a fair review and left a detailed cost of work to be done; one glanced at vents and crawlspace doors, but nothing else. One wanted a fee to come out, spend time to provide a report; another wanted a fee but wouldn't come out except to leave traps. I was not comfortable with any of those and felt stuck with that fact. I contacted Specialty Rodents after reading positive reviews on Yelp. Jeremy was straightforward, experienced, and could clarify any part of what was needed. He knew his stuff; an honest man running a business with family help. He went into my two crawlspaces, the attic, examined entry points, found others, identified what to fix. I recognized a professional, committed to doing a job thoroughly. if he saw a need he was going to fix it. Jeremy cleaned out all damaged, old and rodent infected vapor barrier and insulation in my crawlspace, set live traps and bait boxes, sealed all access points, repositioned and fixed crawlspace doors, replaced vents, etc. Two weeks later he replaced the partial vapor barrier I had, with correct coverage, and replaced insulation. He was thorough and conscientious! He does the job well the first time to minimize returns. He kept me in the loop every day and always was thinking ahead.
