Came here Friday night and I don't know if this is a regular thing or we just came on a good night, but there was a man singing karaoke for the whole restaurant and it was so fun! Theres plenty of seating and all the neon lights make it feel like you're in a night market. We were seated quickly and placed our orders through our phones. We got the boiled dumplings, spicy beef noodle soup, and potstickers. My favorite dish was the spicy beef noodle soup! I cant handle super spicy food, so this was the perfect amount of spice. The filling in the dumplings and potstickers are super tasty! It's a little expensive, but thats to be expected in the bay area. After seating, we weren't given the spiel about ordering on our own. Once we figured that part out, we decided to order: + Soup Pan Fried Buns: as cute as these buns looked, it was hard to eat these as they were huge and the soup was already pouring out from below. + Steamed Soup Dumplings: I enjoyed these. They were a little on the larger side. Once we all grabbed them with our chopsticks, the soup spilled into the tray so we weren't able to try the soup. This was a fail. + Boiled Dumplings: these pork steamed dumplings were my favorite. We received 12 and they were packed with meat and veggies. This is the sole dish I would come back for. * Potstickers: it's your average crunch potsticker. I enjoyed them. * Chow mein noodles: we ordered noodles for the table which were your average chow mein noodles. Overall, our group tried a lot off of the menu. Right off the bat, walked in on a Friday for lunch, after we sat down, my kids start complaining about the smell, the smell I am use to from a hole in the wall restaurant with one waiter that do it all: severing, cleaning dishes, busting tables, washing the toilet and use the same mop to go around the whole restaurant, yea that smell!! But with all the great reviews we decided to stick around, sometimes the dirtiest place has the best food, but boy was I wrong?! XLB is juicy but both of my children stopped after eating one, usually I have to order 2 baskets and refrain myself from eating any for them to tear it up. I was surprised they weren't interested. same for the potstickers. The fillings just mediocre and very close to frozen one anyone can buy from the market. Noodles were not bad, but the pork belly was super chunky - not sure if the restaurant purposely did that again family wasn't impressed, we were sharing and did not finish. Beef wrap, the wrap itself was well made but it was ruined by the beef and random tossed greens that caused it to fall apart. Similar to XLB the technique is there, the meat or fillings ruined it. Pan fried bao saved the day, very juicy, fluffy, and a little crust was very tasty. Well that's what the restaurant was named after, so at least you did that one item to perfection. read more

I heard great things when this was previously known as Pan Fried Dumplings - looks like the ownership change, menu expanded, but the staff remained. Food quality and taste though....apparently just didn't feel the same. Came here with a group of 4 on a weekend for lunch around noon and was surprised there was no wait. Overall it was actually a bit empty with only 3 other tables seated at the time. The restaurant is a no frills, café style, hole in the wall typical Asian joint. With that in mind, I was unexpectedly surprise by the attentive and great service we received throughout our meal (which actually owned a whole star all on its own). Unfortunately, food just fell short from expectations for me which was based on a few of my faves that was ordered (XLB & Braise Noodle Soup). Food talk: (1) Pan Fried Pork Buns - these were OK, came out nice, hot, and juicy inside - but the broth was a bit too sweet for me. (2) Green Onion Beef roll - this was also OK, the meat cuts were a bit too thick and overall the mouth feel was just too dry - felt like it needed more sauce/moisture. (3) Dan Dan Noodles - my least fave thing here, way too much satay sauce and toppings. Just a really busy plate/bowl with such a lackluster/monotone flavor. (4) Braised Beef Noodle Soup - this was OK, came out hot (thank god, since I hate lukewarm soups) which was nice, good amount of meat, and noodles had a nice chew - but the broth was just too light and sweet per my preference. (5) Pork XLB - this was not my forte, the skin and meat was super juicy, but the broth inside was way too sweet for my taste. (Seems like a trend via the overly sweetness) (6) Chive Pockets - this was also OK for me, a little too much CHIVES and not enough eggs (also there was no vermicelli noodles which was something I've had in many other places that added great texture). The appetizers at this place are fantastic. The buns came out crispy and filled with soup. It had a ton of flavor and was extremely soft. The sauce on the wontons was spicy and tasty with a good amount of vinegar. The broth of the soup was very rich and beefy. However the noodles was a bit disappointing. The xiao long bao and the spicy wonton in red chilli oil are close seconds. The dumpling size here is on the larger side and the skin is thin with generous filling. The stir fried garlic eggplant is tasty too, although a tad oily.
