Toblerone cocktail!
Vanessa W.

That cocktail menu! Love it! I was so happy to see Toblerone in their cocktail menu that once I saw Toblerone nothing else that was in the menu mattered. Spats cocktail menu was definitely a winner. We came for desert after a fringe show. The opening hours are a real plus, open until midnight during the week made it fantastic for a cheeky late night desert. I had their brandy snap basket which was just as good as I remember. Plenty of strawberries and a good basket. My friend had the butterscotch and that was also fantastic. Her iced chocolate was huge and bigger than she could finish. The prices are reasonable. I loved that they were happy to split the bill for us. That is often a pain when going out, so many places will not split the bill but Spats was not one of them. The decor needs an update. The desserts a good if you want simple old style desserts. There is a huge variety of desserts bars nearby if you want something more extravagant.

Sochi C.

Dimly lit intimate atmosphere. Space divided into small cosy cubicles. I haven't been there in a while, but was always a good place for sweets treats with cute tea sets. Recommended for couples date night or small group of friends. Thanks for the thoughtful dessert presentation for my birthday!!!! Unexpected touch.

It's officially unofficial, I have now tried almost every dessert from the cabinets of Dolce & Co…read moreand now I'm onto round 2. You know how you sometimes politely say to your grandma who serves you a gravy smeared piece of meat served on a splodge of mash, "oh it looks almost too good to eat!" Well this time I really mean it. The mini cakes, pots of mousse, patisseries and slices here look like they belong in the Louvre, not a dessert cabinet. It is the perfect small birthday present for someone at work you're not besties with or to show off to the family in-law after a fancy dinner. Ranging from $6-8 per item you will want to savour every moment, but that isn't hard because there are always so many taste and mouth sensations in every bite from snap and crackle to pop! So after some long hard research my favourites have to be the: - Lemon meringue - Hazelnut crunch - Green Sencha Mousse - Strawberry and balsamic ice cream - Chocolate truffle mound thing And yes, there are more than that to choose from. Trust me, you will thank me for that guide next time your taking away or dining in store over a coffee. My biggest problem is that they aren't open to cure my late night dessert fix. I guess I'll have to continue to put up with eating dessert in the middle of the day! *sigh*

While at some places you'll find poorly presented, with finger marks, or sweating chocolate, at Dolce & Co everything is perfect. They have a range of different gateaux, macarons, and even their own homemade ice creams (seriously, how cool is that). Some people call it a dessert bar, but it's really more of a patisserie. They aren't open late and don't have much space, so they don't really fit the dessert bar mould. If there's one issue with the store it's that it's maybe too small to truly sit back and relax in. They'll happily package up any sweets you want to take home, and a cake from here would make a great little gift. Just make sure you're transporting them well, because it would be such a shame to get it home and not have it look as gorgeous as it did when you bought it. Prepared to be amazed.

The other 2 did get a little too much in the end, but we finished most of it. Would go back to try other things on the menu. Keep in mind minimum order is one item per person. Fear not, I'm here to spill the goss on Adelaide's latest dessert spot (set to lose it's title very soon I'm sure as another dessert opening is always round the corner). The two chefs behind Astonish are Le Cordon Bleu (or LCB to us TAFE kiddies) graduates, originally working in kitchens in Sydney. It really feels like a lot of work and love has gone into this place, and the overall appearance of the store is gorgeous. But hey, as a few other dessert bars around town have shown, it's not all about atmosphere. If you want to have a great dessert bar, well in my books you need great desserts. Astonish try their hardest, and I'm pretty happy with the results. The menu features two sections. The simple things like cakes, tarts, & mousses, and then the more extravagant dine in menu. The smaller stuff is around the $7 mark, but the dine in menu is a little more expensive and will set you back about $12-$18. There are some very interesting (and delicious options), but I did find a few elements of the dishes didn't quite work. The panna fire was an interesting and delicious dish, with a bombe alaska and a slab of vanilla panna cotta. But as a combo they didn't quite work, and would have probably been better as their own stand out dishes. But the giant profiterole on the other hand was amazing, with a crumble on the outer shell that gave great mouth feel, and a filling of ice cream and caramelised banana. YUM. I think Astonish is stil finding their feet, but their desserts are well thought out, with enough pizazz to stay interesting but without going too crazy and alienating some diners. Is it worth the extra price tag? I think so, but I believe that there are a few dessert bars around Adelaide that are worth a lot more than what you already pay.

Sure, the food is one part of it. Eggless is always changing their menu (monthly as it's been mentioned) and they're always plating up delicious homestyle desserts, but with interesting flavours. Whenever there is a dish containing either pandan, or banana & caramel, I'm completely sold. There have been dishes that haven't been my thing, but it's never put a damper on my night. There can be a wait, and people are used to it. It's rare to drive past and not see a line up outside. But I love that it's something they're working on, and now you can pop your name on their list, add your phone number, and go off and do your own thing. They'll give you a call when your table frees up and you don't have to wait around outside. I also love that I never have to worry about booking, because well... they don't take bookings. I like making spur of the moment decisions, and I know I can turn up at Eggless anytime and I'll never be turned away, I just might have a bit of a wait. The atmosphere is great, the staff are lovely, and you never get that feeling like you're being pressured to leave. It's great. You should eat there. Now.

I'm a fan…read moreand these past few months I've been going at least once a month, because of the monthly menu changes. It's almost always worth the hour long waits, in rain or shine, which can be spent reading the menu (although I do that online beforehand sometimes). You also have to leave your name and number of people on the list and then get called in after some time. I usually come with a few others since it's easier to order more desserts with more people. I'll talk a bit about the May menu since it was the most recent experience. We ordered a Pandanmisu, Turkish Coffee Cheesecake, Death by Chocolate Sundae and the Miso Creme Brulee. I usually go for an Iced Teh Tahrik (Malaysian milk tea) since I'm obsessed with HK or Asian style milk teas. While it can be pretty sweet from the condensed milk but in my opinion it's the condensed milk that makes the drink. My favourite by far was the cheesecake because it was accompanied by rose cream, rose jelly, Turkish Delight and a sprinkling of pomegranates and pistachio. It's a match made in heaven! The cheesecake itself wasn't overly sweet and had that slight salty & savoury taste from the cream cheese which was nice with the coffee flavour. But the real highlights were the rose cream and jelly. I really love the floral and fragrant flavour of rosewater and they did well because it can be pretty strong. There wasn't too much rose cream or jelly on the plate so it wasn't overpowering. The pomegranate, pistachio and Turkish Delight gives it some texture as does the chocolate biscuit base. The Miso Creme Brulee was another dessert that stood out, because I was thinking 'was that miso as in the fermented soy miso?' So I wasn't sure what to expect...was it going be really salty and funky from the fermented paste? Surprisingly there was none of the powerful miso flavour and the custard was more like a salted creme brulee, similar to what you'd expected in a salted caramel or salted chocolate. It was pretty tasty for the same reason and I would order it again given the chance. The Pandanmisu was solid, the tiramisu filling was light and somewhat subtle on the pandan flavour but you can tell it's definitely pandan. But it wasn't quite as nice as the first two. And finally the chocolate sundae (choc gelato, choc brownie, ganache and choc mousse and cacao nibs) which was my least favourite because I'm not a fan of excessively chocolatey desserts so it's not their fault, since everyone else seemed to enjoy it. I've been meaning to review Eggless for a while and the score reflects the past experiences I've had not just the most recent. It's difficult to fault Eggless, although the menu is a little more creative and impressive on some months than others. The prices are fine- usually $10-14 depending on what you get and the serving sizes are decent. It's always a good experience for me, chatting with friends or family over dessert and tea. The owner is always friendly and is quite a talkative guy! I always tell my friends who haven't been to go at least once because I really think it's one of the best dessert cafes in Adelaide at the moment.

Fortunately for us we were not disappointed! The presentation of the desserts here is as immaculate as the white walls and white crockery they come on. The signature Patisserie Jin logo is stencilled in icing sugar and chocolate in one way, shape or form on the desserts and clearly each dessert is quite unique to this cafe. The little faces engraved on the spoons and forks here were also very kawaii! My dining counterpart's green tea creme brulee was sweet and custardy but balanced out by the fact that the matcha tea was used to flavour the dish. The triple chocolate cake was all mine and although small it was incredibly rich and a little bit bitter thanks to the use of dark chocolate. This is now the only dessert bar remaining on Unley Rd and so I think it will become more popular, but the atmosphere is slightly clinical and sparse for such a large space. It feels more like you're sitting in a bakery rather than a cute and cosy little dessert bar. The prices are also quite high for the size of the desserts you receive but they are rich in sugar value. Next time I'm craving a green tea dessert though I will be back!

For $8 I received a generous serving of vanilla ice cream and fresh, juicy strawberries with enough chocolate sauce to ensure the waffle wasn't too dry or bland. The half serving was perfect for a morning tea sized snack. I'm really disappointed this place doesn't open later for weeknight desserts and that is the only reason for a loss of star.
