After a wonderful savoury breakfast, my friend and I were in need of something to curb out sweet craving. We arrived at 11am on the dot. Keen as to get that chocolate fix. I got the Chilli & Cinnamon Dark Hot Chocolate. Just how I like my men! Hot, sweet, spicy, exotic and dark ;) Ohh Em Gee, truly rgasmic!! I was constantly saying "oh oh OHH this is SO good"! Even better that it was a large mug of this divine sweet elixir, which had just the right bite from the chilli. I also ordered a salted caramel macaron which was delicious with it's subtle bursts of saltiness. My friend ordered her pregnancy fix yet again, another Iced Chocolate. This was in a league of its own compared to the one she ordered at Hawker Street Cafe earlier that morning. This was decadent with plentiful swirls of Belgian milk chocolate. She kept mentioning that it needs to be on tap and that she wished her tongue was long enough to lick the chocolate on the inside of the glass. That's how good it was! Would I return? Came here last night for dessert and it was an awesome experience. We sat in the back which was outdoors so it was kind of cold. Good thing there's a basket full of blankets for guests. Cute right? And Christmas lights strung up. I ordered the hazelnut hot chocolate which was really good but I would have preferred more hazelnut flavor. The strawberry waffles were served with fresh strawberries, icecream, and a cup of melted milk chocolate.... and everything on the plate is drizzled with chocolate...... so much chocolate.... definitely a chocolate lovers dream. They say tricks are for kids, and I think Chocolatree is too. We walked in on a busy Tuesday night and were immediately wreathed in adolescent hormones, surrounded by school kids wearing Witchery and Bardot and smacking gum while sculling their hot chocolate. And because the restaurant is a small space with raised ceilings, the cave effect makes the kids squeals of delight echo quite effectively. I found myself sitting in this cafe and thinking: 'who's in charge here?' The staff serving seemed overwhelmed and the tables were covered in dirty dishes. It took forty five minutes from the time we walked in the door to actually receive our order, by which point we were officially over it. But wait, yes the affogato was delicious! Creamy chocolate ice cream with excellent coffee in sweet sundae glasses. My mood was improved times one billion. Another thing I loved: the garden out back. The fairy lights and much quieter atmosphere looked lovely, and if we can get a table there next time we might give this place another shot. Still, I think the staff need an extra hand in this place. In the colder months too, the staff and more than happy to offer you a red polar fleece blanket from the huge basket and putting that across your lap helps keep away the winter chills. As far as the menu is concerned there is the dozen or so different kinds of hot chocolate you can buy plus coffee and a range of teas. Then there are the small individual chocolate range, which are handmade and all look equally delicious. But Chocolatree has become famous for its waffles and group chocolate fondues which have become very popular. Chocolatree is a new cafe that just recently opened on O'Connell St. It has a cosy ambiance with a nice outdoor area out the back with trees and wooden furnishings. In winter they provide bright red snuggies and a gas heater for each table. Although I didn't take up the offer on the red snuggies - I'm a massive germaphobe. The indoor seating could be improved though, it's just too small if there are more than 3 of you. The menu is extensive with an all day breakfast, savoury, desserts, and coffee. Most of the menu items seem mouth-watering, such as fondue, apple & rhubarb crumble, or poached pear & almond pizza. From the savoury side, the "Tree Hugger", a 10 inch pizza with roast pumpkin, olives, fetta, cherry tomatoes, onions, mushrooms and a pesto base. My personal favourite would absolutely have to be the "Mudslide"; a mudcake filled and topped with ice cream, strawberries, and warm liquid chocolate that hardens to a crisp on the ice cream (Magic Topping), all finished off with whipped cream. It is gigantic. You could feed a small country. The mudcake is beautiful; moist, rich, and not too sugary sweet. Strawberries complemented the flavours well, and who doesn't love reminiscing the good old days when you had ice cream with magic shell chocolate topping as a kid? The price range is reasonable for a dessert café in North Adelaide, plus long trading hours and easy street parking. I have to admit, I am a softie to any cafe which has a large supply of gorgeous chocolate treats. I find that it would be extremely hard to simply come in for just a cup of coffee (which are not served in ridiculously small cups like many cafes I must add), with the lovely supply of chocolate bits, mouses and cakes. The indoor setting is quite cute and cosy, but I especially like the outdoor setting as it is quite large with plenty of room to find a spot to sit. I expect that it would be a gorgeous setting on a nice cool day with a hot cup of hot chocolate. The coffee itself was a little milky for my liking yet still quite enjoyable, a lot better than the bitter coffee you get at a franchise such as gloria jeans. Walked in on a Monday night and the store was relatively quiet, until about five minutes after we sat down, the crowds began rolling in! Now we only came in for dessert, so we ordered a dessert pizza of sorts. It was miraculous. Upon walking into the cafe' I was greeted with an odd smell. My housemate would sometimes leave laundry in the washing machine all day/night and the next day when you opened the machine, you had a weird mildew-eske sort of smell. That, was what I smelt when I first walked in. I have been here around 3-4 times and it's a bit o fa hit n miss with the smell sometimes its there, sometimes its not, and it really has me baffled as to WHAT that smell is However, that is probably the only negative thing I have to say about this place. It was very clean, and the decor, earthy and warm tones. I loved the stone wall and high ceiling. It creates a somewhat cosy feel. Oh, and that orange couch? mmmm comfy! They also have seating outside, which is quite lovely in the evenings, however some places do seem to attract spiders, as my group almost got a nasty surprise, as did another table. I ordered a Coconut chocolate off their special menu. What is better than white chocolate? White chocolate with COCONUT! It was great, a nice difference from my normal preference. I've sampled a few of their waffles and have never been let down, warm and crunchy! I guess you only get one opportunity to create a first impression right? That being said - it was worth looking past that and concentrating on the positives! The reason I was a tad apprehensive upon arriving here for the first time is that the young dude behind the counter seemed totally nonplussed about the fact that a group of us had just arrived for a booking that had been made a week prior. We had booked for 10 of us at 7pm and when we asked where we should sit - he told us that he couldn't find the booking, and were we sure we'd booked! Really? And that was where I felt a tad deflated. Fortunately though, a young waitress appeared from behind the scenes and raising her eyes said "Don't worry, that always happens!" Again - really? She led us to a table outside that was empty (presumably only because it was still early) and we sat down to order, grabbing a complimentary blanky as we did. That my friends, is when Chocolatree came into their own! I ordered the Belgian waffles with strawberries and choccy sauce, and other friends had various ice creams, hot hazelnut cocoa, a variety of savoury waffles and other items from a pretty good menu. My portion of Belgian waffles could have fed a small African country and the same could be said for my chums' food! The food arrived quickly, was very reasonably priced and it wasn't long before the place was abuzz with people! It soon became packed to almost overflowing - and this was a Wednesday night! After dinner with friends on a Sunday evening on O'Connell Street, we assumed there would be a dessert bar nearby - this is how we found Chocolatree! I sense that this place has been around for a while - the menus were very dog-eared, and the inside had a 'worn' look about it. I was very impressed regardless - the menu was large and there were a lot of options at the counter (lots of truffles, small chocolates, etc. as well as macaroons and small cakes). Plus they did a very nice long black ... which gives them an extra star ;) We sat outside (which was nicer) - the service was quick and friendly. I went to chocolatetree Under high recommendation from friends, and was not disappointed, their waffles are fantastic, perfectly soft but yet crunchy, great taste and texture, there was ample melted chocolate and ice cream but not overpowering, price was average but reasonable compared to other places, the white hot chocolate was very creamy and tasty, one of the best white hot chocolates I've drunk in my life, the ample outdoor seating is a great touch also read more

I went here after dinner on a Saturday night, around 10pm, and while it took a while to get seated, as they were busy, it was worth the wait. Once we had ordered, it didn't take too long to come out, and boy was it good. I had the chocolate delice which came with a macaron, raspberry coulis and raspberry sorbet. The sorbet was the best I have ever eaten. I also ordered a dark hot chocolate with fresh mint, which was to die for. In my opinion this place is the real deal. Im not sure if I liked it so much because Id just had the most awful hot chocolate down the road at Cibo Espresso or whether I liked this place on its merits - I think the second choice. The hot chocolate was superb, the chocolates were nice, the room was nice and dark and made you feel like you were in Paris (rather than O'Connell St, North Adelaide). I really liked the homely feel to it and the orange couch amongst the darkwood coloured room really had something appealing about it. Its not cheap, but so what - it serves very good quality hot chocolate, chocolate frogs and chocolate bars. My 3 year old twins liked it too - and actually seemed to behave more like adults because the environment expected that of them - any place which can have a taming effect on those two is doing something right with its ambience. One of them even said that he had better not have too much of my hot chocolate because if he did, he would go berko! I think the place must be employing a hypnotist!!!! Yes, yes and yes! Perfect for chocolate and even better for crepes. Craving chocolate with a friend, an evening stop was made at Chocolatree. I ordered a chili and cinnamon hot chocolate and my my my, how glorious it was! Not too thick, nor too watery, the chocolatey concoction hit the spot. I have had many chili hot chocolates before, and sometimes find them too spicy, or alternatively not spicy enough. But this was just right. I was able to drink it without my eyes watering and throat burning, but also really taste and appreciate the addition of chili. The cinnamon worked to create a fuller, slightly sweet taste and perfectly complemented the chili. Previously, I've eaten crepes here. I have always enjoyed them and really have no complaints! Their thinness really allows the chocolate and other fillings to be properly enjoyed, and they are the perfect serve for a naughty treat! I absolutely adore the seating area out the back, and was able to sit out there despite the cold evening as they have heating and blankets available. The staff were lovely, giving me advice on what different drinks tasted like so I could make the best decision. The prices are somewhat high, but you get what you pay for. read more

A nice little cafe that offers it's diners a range of different food options, and a range of tantalizing desserts. We came here for lunch a few weeks back with friends who spoke very highly of the place. We walked in and were seated right away, despite the fact that it was quite busy. I ordered steak, which was cooked to perfection and beautifully presented, along with a ample mound of possibly the best potato salad I've had in my life. For dessert my hubby and I shared a mudslide, which was as rich and delicious as it sounded. Definitely one of my top places to lunch in Nth Adelaide. This place is a winner. read more

Deserts are a little bit overly sweet for my taste, not really great quality. I have definitely tried better. Their savoury stuff isn't too bad, but for a chocolate shop I just don't see the point. Slightly sweet but I hear people like sweet things so if you're like that you'll probably like this. Chocolatree has a nice atmosphere but the staff I encountered really need improvement... none were too interested when I was there. I may be being a bit harsh, but in my mind, the food doesn't taste fresh, and sometimes the texture is a bit off. I tried the lemon tart and depending on my mood - my sister would bring some back for me sometimes - the flavour was alright, but sometimes the texture and taste of the dough would be a bit off - almost like 'baking soda - ish'. Sometimes I noticed a fine weird smell or grainy texture that did not smell great although the flavour of the filling was really lemony and sweet at the same time. Their chilli chocolate though, I could get on board with. Probably one of the more unique experiences I've had. As well as the hazelnut/malteaser or ferrero roche desert. That one's just right :) I didn't find anything particularly great about the place, with food that could use better quality in my opinion and just - a bit more sha-bam, this place is not one I like to frequent often. However, if someone were to bring me here I would not reject it either, I could get on board with something new I haven't tried. Not bad if you like lights, sweet food and a warm atmosphere, that's nice for family. if it's a good day and the staff are considerate and conscientious it could work out fine with the right selection of food. :) For me, the chocolate wasn't rich enough or "Chocolate enough", mostly felt like something I could make myself but better. 4th time visit. If you like sweet chocolate then there are plenty of options. Beautiful handmade chocolates and small cakes on sale too. Their hot chocolates all taste creamy and delicious but probably a little to sweet for some in that case go for the dark option. The pancakes are fantastic but the waffles lack imagination. A few negs include the building and the back open air section which can smell of drains and is all looking a bit decrepit. Blankets are a good idea when chilly but aren't always clean. Service by a young and probably inexperienced staff can be bumpy at times literally when a hot chocolate was spilt onto the saucer. Apology but nothing was actually done- more professional places would have at least replaced the saucer. Observed one waitress adjusting floor mats then going straight back to service without washing hands. Orders can also be a chore when the lack of table service shows up in a queue to order, adding to the congestion of a premises that is really too small. Probably going to look for a different dessert bar now as I've really exhausted this one. What is it about Adelaide that means often unchanging menus and this awful trend towards having to order your own and pay before eating? read more

This is one of the first dessert bars that I've been to in Adelaide and till this day remains my most frequented. I'm by no means a fan of chocolate but they have a huge range of other desserts to choose from. A lot of them are a bit sweet so if you're watching out for sugar maybe opt for the less sweet homemade teas instead. read more

Worst experience ever tonight 30 min wait for microwave sticky date pudding that was soggy and tasteless and ice cream missing . Waited even longer for coffee which was Luke warm and badly made. The service here is excellent and the hot chocolate is superb; in other places, I am used to tepid, lacklustre hot choc but at the chocolate tree the hot chocolate IS hot and rich and dark and very tasty. Highly recommended if you are chocoholic. read more

Wouldn't even give it one star. Went for my birthday last week and when we went there were only a couple of other customers in at the time. The staff seemed more interested in standing in the kitchen socialising than helping their customers. Even told 2 people who came in to just grab their own menus and then she went and stood back in the kitchen to chat. The desserts were horrible, we had 4 different menu items between us, all of which I am positive was pre-made and heated in the MIRCOWAVE, I could hear the door to the microwave opening and closing a lot and within a few minutes we had sticky date pudding and crepes, chocolate fondant (no gooey centre) and a horrible rocky road dessert. There's no way all of these desserts could have been done fresh in under 5 minutes. We were sitting right near the counter and could see directly into the kitchen that everything was pre made.
