For most, if you weren't a local you wouldn't know where the Dulwich Bakery was. Nestled in the…read moreleafy suburban streets of Dulwich/Toorak Gardens is a small, old fashioned, shopping corner with Newsagent, Supermarket (small, so hardly super), Hair Dressing Salon, Restaurant and the Bakery. Rarely do I pass by and see the adjoining cafe with a seat free, and generally quite a bit of hob-nob chicky eye candy! I drop in myself about once a fortnight for the odd pie or two. I have always been very happy with the quality and the service is always with a cute smile! I had a Chilli pie last time and it has quite a bit of heat, which made me smile on the inside! Many 'chilli' pies I have had at other bakeries are a little tame on the spice, so it is good to see a shop with a bit of guts!

When we ordered coffee, she smiled sweetly and said "Oh sorry, I turned the machine off because there weren't many customers today, it's actually been quite 'dead'." What did you think we were, dear? ONLY. IN. ADELAIDE. **UPDATE 12/01/15** Dulwich Bakery's lovely, polite business owner Wayne got in touch with me and apologised profusely for the behaviour of the staff which prompted my review. His apology has redeemed the place somewhat for me; he even offered coffees on the house on my next visit to apologise and keep my custom. I'll be taking him up on that kind offer. He was absolutely livid to learn that one of his staff, who are according to him put through their paces regularly with professional retail trainers, would turn off their coffee machine almost 2 hours prior to closing...and has taken steps to ensure it doesn't happen again. Thanks for that Wayne, mighty big of you. Apathy in hospitality and service is contagious around Adelaide; glad to hear it's being dealt with at this little bakery, which for me has regained some of its sweetness.

I had a great idea today: let's go to the new Red Door Bakery on King William Road. Unfortunately…read moreas we drove past it dawned on me that I hadn't checked if this new bakery had actually opened yet... it hadn't. My next idea was Mulot's Patisserie, but their doors weren't any more inviting, as white paper covered all their windows. I was out of ideas until I spied the Hyde Park Bakery in the distance. I figured they were new kids on the block, as I'd never come across them when I was living round the corner. A quick squiz at their Facebook shows in fact they are pretty new, and opened up in March of this year. But back to the goods. I was immediately drawn to their lattice shortbread pies, but I had a cravings for something savoury. It was a real dilema because everything in the cabinets looked delicious. I settled on a pumpkin & feta parcel and grabbed a shortbread pie to take home for later. I've spent years searching for a pumpkin & feta parcel to rival one that Michel's Patisserie in DJs Food Court (they don't do them anymore), sadly these weren't the ones, but they were still delicious. I can't wait to get back to try some more of their goodies. Everyone was helpful and friendly, and one of the bakers even came out to chat to a lady about their boiled chocolate cake, when they were made, and how long they'll last. It was then that we noticed the cake stand offering sizeable tastings of this particular cake. If you're in the area check this bakery out, I'm almost glad everywhere else was closed.

The sandwiches and sweets are absolutely incredible, prices are great especially considering quality and great service! Cappuccinos, even on a 37* day, were delicious! If you leave hungry, it's your own fault. :)

With many homewares and gift shops on King William Road stocking products, cookbooks and lifestyle…read morebooks on France, it is only befitting for a petit cafe to open here. Say bonjour to Mulots Patisserie. When I entered its door, I found myself salivating at the delicate rows of eclairs, tarte, pastries and more. It is delightfully pleasant to the eyes as it is to the palate. Just as the display of sweet pastries will send you in a flurry of excitement, be prepared for further excitement as you scan the savoury dishes. The mushroom quiche and quiche lorraine is absolutely divine. If you want to hone your French cooking skills, this is the perfect place to do so, with owner Andre showing you the ropes of Parisian cuisine. It's a perfect spot to come to on a Saturday afternoon or just after school drop off, so you can savour these petit delights without the kids bugging you double servings. One visit here will have you murmuring j'adore Mulots!

What a lovely little piece of France tucked away in the hustle and bustle of King William Road!…read more The coffee is alright, but the stars of the show are the rows of French pastries made in-store. They look absolutely delicious! I personally had a couple of house-made macarons, which weren't entirely smooth, but still plenty delicious! The owners are French themselves, and happily engaged in a conversation with me and my own broken French. The service was quick, and the staff were friendly and seemed happy to serve. Tidbits of French culture line the walls - photos and Eiffel towers. It's alright, but does feel a bit half-hearted, which takes a little from the atmosphere. The shop is small and cosy, but may be a problem if you're bringing a large group. Mulot's patisserie is definitely worth a visit if you're in the area, or immersed in French culture/the French community in Adelaide.

I was chatting with Adelaide-based workmates this week about the 2025 South Australian Baking…read moreAward-winning vanilla slice from The Village Baker. When I looked at the website, I saw they also had a passionfruit icing option. I am a fan of passionfruit icing. My dream icing is pink passionfruit icing, but I've only seen homemade vanilla slices with pink passionfruit icing. When I arrived, I saw in the display that the "standard" vanilla slice was the award winner. In my mind, I needed to buy both versions and eat them. Both vanilla slices are superb. The pastry wasn't soggy. The custard was delightfully creamy and smooth with a vanilla flavour without being too sweet. The standard icing is okay. It's a bit thick for me and a bit too sweet. The passionfruit fudge icing, on the other hand, is fantastic. I love anything sweet and tart. Tarty sweetness makes my lips tingle and "sing". The passionfruit fudge is thick, but it doesn't "feel" thick in my mouth, and it's great to crunch the passionfruit seeds between my teeth. I ate the standard vanilla slice first because I wanted to finish with the tartness of the passionfruit fudge icing. I can appreciate why The Village Baker's standard vanilla slice won this year's baking award. I prefer their passionfruit fudge vanilla slice.

A HIDDEN GEM ON SOUTH ROAD…read more WOW! That's all I can really say.. My wife introduced me to this great little bakery a few months ago, and it's now become a weekend regular. Pulling into the little shopping centre in Blackforest, the place doesn't look like much from the outside, but don't let that fool you. This place is a hidden gem. They have a great selection of gourmet pies, pasties and sausage rolls. Beef and Bacon Pie! Amazing.. :) Also there selection of pastries and cakes are brilliant, and after walking in there today to find that they now sell CRONUTS! Sweet! :) This is a working Bakery and it is always packed, they are constantly refilling there pie warmer as they always sell out quick, so no day old footy pies here.. I would highly recommend this place next time your in the neighbourhood. :)

Sitting right on the corner of a roundabout on Winstone and Richmond Avenues, they're not on a main road so you know that all the people who are there are either locals or they've heard just how good this place is by someone else in the know. Having seen the bags stacked up at the front door, its clear they use locally produced Laucke Mill flour for all their baking. And the proof is in the pudding - so to speak. I love their cocktail pies and pasties. In fact their range extends to cocktail sausage rolls, cheese pasties and potato pies - yummy! They have something called a Ned Kelly Pie which I haven't tried yet but I do recommend their potato pies and cheese and veggie pasties - big as well as little. If you go there at Christmas time be sure to give their fruit mince pies a go - you won't regret it. There's nothing glamorous about Beck's Bakehouse just good, hearty pies, pasties, bread and cakes. Don't expect to sit down anywhere so you can devour your purchases, Beck's food is designed for eating either on the run out of the bag, or at home.
