Sitting right on the corner of a roundabout on Winstone and Richmond Avenues, they're not on a main road so you know that all the people who are there are either locals or they've heard just how good this place is by someone else in the know. Having seen the bags stacked up at the front door, its clear they use locally produced Laucke Mill flour for all their baking. And the proof is in the pudding - so to speak. I love their cocktail pies and pasties. In fact their range extends to cocktail sausage rolls, cheese pasties and potato pies - yummy! They have something called a Ned Kelly Pie which I haven't tried yet but I do recommend their potato pies and cheese and veggie pasties - big as well as little. If you go there at Christmas time be sure to give their fruit mince pies a go - you won't regret it. There's nothing glamorous about Beck's Bakehouse just good, hearty pies, pasties, bread and cakes. Don't expect to sit down anywhere so you can devour your purchases, Beck's food is designed for eating either on the run out of the bag, or at home.

When I looked at the website, I saw they also had a passionfruit icing option. I am a fan of passionfruit icing. My dream icing is pink passionfruit icing, but I've only seen homemade vanilla slices with pink passionfruit icing. When I arrived, I saw in the display that the "standard" vanilla slice was the award winner. In my mind, I needed to buy both versions and eat them. Both vanilla slices are superb. The pastry wasn't soggy. The custard was delightfully creamy and smooth with a vanilla flavour without being too sweet. The standard icing is okay. It's a bit thick for me and a bit too sweet. The passionfruit fudge icing, on the other hand, is fantastic. I love anything sweet and tart. Tarty sweetness makes my lips tingle and "sing". The passionfruit fudge is thick, but it doesn't "feel" thick in my mouth, and it's great to crunch the passionfruit seeds between my teeth. I ate the standard vanilla slice first because I wanted to finish with the tartness of the passionfruit fudge icing. I can appreciate why The Village Baker's standard vanilla slice won this year's baking award. I prefer their passionfruit fudge vanilla slice.

A HIDDEN GEM ON SOUTH ROAD…read more WOW! That's all I can really say.. My wife introduced me to this great little bakery a few months ago, and it's now become a weekend regular. Pulling into the little shopping centre in Blackforest, the place doesn't look like much from the outside, but don't let that fool you. This place is a hidden gem. They have a great selection of gourmet pies, pasties and sausage rolls. Beef and Bacon Pie! Amazing.. :) Also there selection of pastries and cakes are brilliant, and after walking in there today to find that they now sell CRONUTS! Sweet! :) This is a working Bakery and it is always packed, they are constantly refilling there pie warmer as they always sell out quick, so no day old footy pies here.. I would highly recommend this place next time your in the neighbourhood. :)

The cafe is old school and a bit daggy but thats kind of what I like about it! I particularly liked the concrete horses fountain outside with no water in it! I think with a bit of work this place could look wonderful too. The food is great and cheap and if they can improve a few things about the presentation of the place, but without losing the original charm, then it would be a really wonderful bakery! A few things of note as a Melbournian in Adelaide for the day: 1. I was surprised (and quite disappointed) that they didnt serve Farmers Union Iced Coffee 2. I was very impressed that they gave me the Adelaide Advertiser for free (as I spent over $4). I wanted to get it anyway to read about how Port Adelaide smashed Adelaide in the Showdown! (Port Adelaide are my second team after Richmond). 3. I was a bit miffed when the bloke serving us asked if we wanted tomato sauce (on a cheese and spinach roll?????) and put it on the table anyway even though we said no! (Although thats not an Adelaide thing, its just odd). All in all I really nice little cafe - its far from perfect, but thats the sort of thing I like in a bakery!

My next idea was Mulot's Patisserie, but their doors weren't any more inviting, as white paper covered all their windows. I was out of ideas until I spied the Hyde Park Bakery in the distance. I figured they were new kids on the block, as I'd never come across them when I was living round the corner. A quick squiz at their Facebook shows in fact they are pretty new, and opened up in March of this year. But back to the goods. I was immediately drawn to their lattice shortbread pies, but I had a cravings for something savoury. It was a real dilema because everything in the cabinets looked delicious. I settled on a pumpkin & feta parcel and grabbed a shortbread pie to take home for later. I've spent years searching for a pumpkin & feta parcel to rival one that Michel's Patisserie in DJs Food Court (they don't do them anymore), sadly these weren't the ones, but they were still delicious. I can't wait to get back to try some more of their goodies. Everyone was helpful and friendly, and one of the bakers even came out to chat to a lady about their boiled chocolate cake, when they were made, and how long they'll last. It was then that we noticed the cake stand offering sizeable tastings of this particular cake. If you're in the area check this bakery out, I'm almost glad everywhere else was closed.

But JB's Bakery has the single best kitchener buns in the history of baked goods. My Dad and I are connoisseurs of the kitchener bun and we have had many in our time. But we both think it is the single best one we have both had. The cream is fresh and full of sugar and jam and the dough is spongy and light and covered in heaps of sugar granules. Aside from the amazing-ness that is the kitchener bun they also do some really yummy savouries. There is not a big range of traditional sausage rolls or pies but they do beautiful looking quiche and frittata's full of brightly coloured fillings. They were also very reasonably priced at around $5.00 a piece or $4.50 for a large individual quiche that would easily be enough for a whole meal with a little salad. There is also plenty of seating if you decide to eat in.

(given the non-meatyness of it) my favourite thing so far has been the Veg Pastie because the pastry is just right, delicious flaky and buttery. They had an extensive assortment of cakes, covering the standard bakery fare and the aforementioned friend swears by the raspberry lamingtons and mini jam tarts. The bread is a little ho-hum, but still tops the other nearby offerings.
