Sitting right on the corner of a roundabout on Winstone and Richmond Avenues, they're not on a main road so you know that all the people who are there are either locals or they've heard just how good this place is by someone else in the know. Having seen the bags stacked up at the front door, its clear they use locally produced Laucke Mill flour for all their baking. And the proof is in the pudding - so to speak. I love their cocktail pies and pasties. In fact their range extends to cocktail sausage rolls, cheese pasties and potato pies - yummy! They have something called a Ned Kelly Pie which I haven't tried yet but I do recommend their potato pies and cheese and veggie pasties - big as well as little. If you go there at Christmas time be sure to give their fruit mince pies a go - you won't regret it. There's nothing glamorous about Beck's Bakehouse just good, hearty pies, pasties, bread and cakes. Don't expect to sit down anywhere so you can devour your purchases, Beck's food is designed for eating either on the run out of the bag, or at home.

I was very impressed that they gave me the Adelaide Advertiser for free (as I spent over $4). I wanted to get it anyway to read about how Port Adelaide smashed Adelaide in the Showdown! (Port Adelaide are my second team after Richmond). 3. I was a bit miffed when the bloke serving us asked if we wanted tomato sauce (on a cheese and spinach roll?????) and put it on the table anyway even though we said no! Best to get in early because their pies and pasties sell out quick in the midday rush. The range of desserts is just as good, and more plentiful. They also have a sandwich bar set up at the side of the store if you're looking for a healthier option. A good display of their freshly baked bread also lines the back of the store. I recommend the larger, fresh made steak pies. Delicious and enough to feed a decent group of people. If the huge stacks of sausage rolls, pies and other baked delicacies you'll see in the kitchen behind the counter is anything to go by, Goodwood Bakehouse caters, and caters well. There's always a good selection of seasonally themed giftboxes to be had at the side of the store too, depending on what holiday we're approaching.

My next idea was Mulot's Patisserie, but their doors weren't any more inviting, as white paper covered all their windows. I was out of ideas until I spied the Hyde Park Bakery in the distance. I figured they were new kids on the block, as I'd never come across them when I was living round the corner. A quick squiz at their Facebook shows in fact they are pretty new, and opened up in March of this year. But back to the goods. I was immediately drawn to their lattice shortbread pies, but I had a cravings for something savoury. It was a real dilema because everything in the cabinets looked delicious. I settled on a pumpkin & feta parcel and grabbed a shortbread pie to take home for later. I've spent years searching for a pumpkin & feta parcel to rival one that Michel's Patisserie in DJs Food Court (they don't do them anymore), sadly these weren't the ones, but they were still delicious. I can't wait to get back to try some more of their goodies. Everyone was helpful and friendly, and one of the bakers even came out to chat to a lady about their boiled chocolate cake, when they were made, and how long they'll last. It was then that we noticed the cake stand offering sizeable tastings of this particular cake. If you're in the area check this bakery out, I'm almost glad everywhere else was closed.

But JB's Bakery has the single best kitchener buns in the history of baked goods. My Dad and I are connoisseurs of the kitchener bun and we have had many in our time. But we both think it is the single best one we have both had. The cream is fresh and full of sugar and jam and the dough is spongy and light and covered in heaps of sugar granules. Aside from the amazing-ness that is the kitchener bun they also do some really yummy savouries. There is not a big range of traditional sausage rolls or pies but they do beautiful looking quiche and frittata's full of brightly coloured fillings. They were also very reasonably priced at around $5.00 a piece or $4.50 for a large individual quiche that would easily be enough for a whole meal with a little salad. There is also plenty of seating if you decide to eat in.
