Poached eggs on fat bread with avo and tomato.
    Laura N.

It's lucky the table is that large to accommodate the maaa-hooooo-sive breakfasts that appeared. It was like Texas - everything was bigger. From the fat bread to the busty avocado, it was a meal with the panache of a pirate king. I was warned to get a half order, but did I listen? Of course not. By the end of the meal (note: by end, I mean me waving the white flag, not the completion), I was wishing I could rally the community at the namesake communal table to help finish what looked like I had barely touched. When a restaurant can do something as simple as eggs on toast in a way that's both eye-popping and delicious, you know you'll be safe venturing into the other menu items like green eggs and ham and french toast. Just don't make the same mistake I did - always opt for the half order.

I love eating here as the market on a Saturday morning is a buzz and full of so much fresh produce everywhere that I just want to buy it all. The stall itself is small but there are ample seats around to plant yourself with the choice of stools by the stall or tables off to the side. I opted for the half serve (another tick for this place!) of the Green Eggs & Ham and lucky I did as the serve was a perfect size for me yet still substantial. The scrambled eggs were creamy and fluffy and the incorporation of parsley pesto into the mix turned the usual fare of scrambled eggs into something that sang flavour. There was no need for additional seasoning here as this was covered by the fancy addition to the dish, the prosciutto. The Co-Pilot opted for the French Toast. The soft, pillowy fat slices of bread were fried perfectly in the eggy coating and topped off with an abundance of fresh strawberries. The chilled rhubarb compote was strong in flavour and once again gave this dish that extra wow factor that brought it from the standard french toast to something that was a delight to eat. While we went with the full serve this is available in a half serve as well..so you only have to feel half as guilty. The breakfast on offer here will turn any morning into a fabulous one.

Muesli and yoghurt with fruit and rhubarb compote.

We were lucky enough to find two free seats for breakfast on a Saturday morning. If we had arrived half an hour later there would have been a bit of a wait. The menu looks great with so many different options (Green eggs and ham; Wholemeal Banana bread; Muesli and yoghurt). Whilst the store is quite small I was amazed with how many staff were working around the small space and how quickly my order came out. I ordered the muesli with fruit and yoghurt (see picture). It tasted amazing! The rhubarb compote that was on top of my muesli (and features in most of the sweet menu options) was delicious and is definitely a must try! Definitely a great place in the lovely Adelaide Central Market. Perfect for a casual breakfast and to soak up the wonderful market atmosphere!

Famous for their breakfasts, Big table is also the best place to have a coffee in the Adelaide Central Markets. You can identify the stall by, that's right - the big table! It's a big wooden number adjacent to the stall proper and right next to the Tbar seating with a bunch of multicoloured chairs around it. Big, happy, bright and friendly pretty much sums up the general atmosphere of this delightful stall. They do fresh juices too if you're feeling saintly and for the slightly more sinful a no nonsense affogato; for just $4.5 they'll put a ball of vanilla icecream in a latte glass and pour a shot of coffee over it. The pesto mushies that come with the big brekky are a must try, otherwise they've got a bunch of healthy wraps, baguettes, salads and what not, all available for takeaway too. I prefer to try and grab a place on the stools around the U shaped counter and watch all the goings on as the 8 or so staff maneuver their way around each other in the tiny space. Feels like I'm in amongst all the industrious excitement!

You know you'll always get a good breakfast here! Big Table is an institution in the Central Markets and there's a reason why they're always busy. I usually opt for savour options because I'm not a huge fan of having sweets for breakfast but I decided to indulge the 5-year old child in me and took the bait for the apple crumble French toast. My friend has dreams about their regular French toast and thought that she must be on to a good thing. It was amazing!! I loved that it wasn't too sweet and half a serve well and truly filled me up. My (tiny) friend had a whole serve on her own and loved it too. All the meals I've had from here is great and it's well worth the wait if there aren't any tables.

Located in the Adelaide Central Market, at the Gouger St end. This cafe is always busy, the reason being, excellent coffee, good options for breakfast and lunch, with great friendly service. We have stopped by this cafe on a number of occasions and have always left impressed. Not hard to understand why they are so busy. Morning papers are supplied if you want to catch the news while relaxing over a very smooth coffee. All good, will return.

Reading the menu at the Big Table doesn't really get me too excited. There's nothing that jumps out at me as being wow amazing. Thankfully there's a difference when it turns up on your plate. The food is tasty, and you can tell they source good ingredients, but what do you expect for a Central Market eatery. There are plenty of ways to tailor the typical eggs to suit you, and I love that their big breakfast comes in a half size. I'm a fan of the variety in a big breakfast, but all too often they're just too huge (and too expensive) for the morning. So the Big Table makes a nice change. If you unfortunately do miss out on a spot on the 'big table' countertop seating is squishy. And if you're like me and lack the coordination to sit atop a high stall you might have a bit of a problem. Despite the slipping and sliding and lack of places to pop my handbag it was a great breakfast.

Going to the markets as a kid, I was obsessed with The Big Table. I would dream about their thick-cut Japanese raison toast. A few years later at school (which was just around the corner) I would live off their baguettes, foccacias and wraps. Now, no-one wants to go here with me. Many a mornings I will suggest having breakfast at The Big Table and all I get is a 'mmm' and a 'nah it's not good there anymore'. What! Since when? I think the food is still amazing. I love sitting up on the counter, watching them make my milkshake and waiting for my food (maybe I haven't quite left my childhood?) Yes it is slightly pricey. As a student I would wince at giving away half my wage for a delicious, mouth-watering foccaccia. However, I think it is worth it, the serving sizes are generous and the food is good quality. Another reason I don't eat here so much is the serious lack of seating. If you miss out on getting a place on the counter, there are about two tables which you may be lucky enough to scab, if not you have to wait. Most places are absolutely packed on a Saturday morning, The Big Table is especially so.

The Big Table is a great place to get a coffee in the markets. In addition to the big breakfast for which it is so well known, the BigTable also does a mean foccatia and a heap of different salads which can become quite addicitve. Serves are generous and the staff are friendly. Stools are packed tight encircling the courregated iron and wood bar. Best on a Tuesday or Wednesday, when the crowds are not so intense.

    The classic French toast, devine!

The menu is large and interesting enough with not too many "generic" options except the ones you want such as Chocolate Fondu for 2 or 4. I had a Banana, Peanut Butter, Cookies, Vanilla Custard, Creamy concoction in a jar which was topped with icecream very very delish and beautifully presented. My companions had waffles, ice-cream and a yummy chocolate and berry mousse/pudding. All were very pleased with their orders and there was a lot of "would you mind if I had a fork full?" going on. Coffee and desserts came out all together and our table was cleared in an appropriate amount of time after we had finished our plates. Being a group of 6 is probably a little too large for the small outdoor space on the sidewalk with round tables and various chair heights, but we made it work. The only down side to this spot is that the coffee is "good" not "awesome"

Luckily, a table had just left, with a quick clean of the table - we were seated. Decor - Candles! I love candlelit places at night, the chairs were also quite comfy, some places which have the same modern/sleek vibe to it like this place, have uncomfortable plastic or metal chairs, but we were seated in comfortable cushy bliss for your butt! We ordered - I had the Cherry Ripe Waffle and one of their 'house specialities' the St Louis Hot Chocolate' Waffles: I have to admit I was disappointed in the waffle, this is what pushed it down to 3 stars rather than 4. The waffle was warm, but it tasted like it had been reheated, or simply defrosted and stuck in a microwave. It wasn't crunchy or fresh, the texture was chewy and dry. I chose this dish because it mentioned white chocolate and almonds, it was presented on the plate, but the white chocolate tasted like melted white chocolate buttons from the local supermarket, too sugary and it hard almost hardened when I tried to scoop it up to put on my waffle. The 'French Vanilla Ice Cream' tasted distinctively like Bulla Vanilla ice cream. The cherries, and cherry glaze were delicious though. The Hot chocolate: Average more or less, it was a good hot chocolate, but I've had better in most other places, for a house special, again I was hoping for a bit more, but I might be a little harsh here, as my friend said he absolutely loved it. I'd order it again if I came here, and that is usually a good sign. They had free water available for patrons, in the water was such things as citrus; oranges, lemons, lychee, and strawberry, I thought that was a little fancy. It was a nice touch to the place. If I came here again, I'd avoid the waffles completely, as they were sub-par. But the venue is a nice place, with a positive atmosphere. Why no white hot chocolate? This makes me sad.

When that has happened I do try other types of coffee from his available collection, but mostly it's the Mexican Organic I go for. Ross and his team have a very good range and even though it is an expensive item, some things in life just have to be right before I can deal with them. I do not like the effects of instant coffee on my system, I almost always end up with a stomach gripe if I drink instant coffee, and you simply don't want to know about that. So I usually drink plunger coffee, it is one of my special things in life I suppose. As far as The Coffee Bean Shop goes they stock a range of implements to create coffee in - mostly the little Italian stove-top espresso jugs, but I tend not to favour them because they are made from aluminium and I understand that too much aluminium heated and exposed to something you then drink can cause some brain function problems over time - just something I read that has stuck. That's why I plunge, but you know, the occasional aluminium jug espresso coffee is no big deal. They do the grinding for you if you need it done, and they use a range of coffee packets that are a nice plane brown bag, so its a pretty sustainable system. Their selection of products includes some pre-ground coffee beans in little plastic pails with a lid, a variety of fragrant and tasty teas, blends of the tea, and the coffee and tea making equipment I mentioned above plus other stuff and some specialty sweets that you'd have with a beverage, or give as a gift - try a chocolate coated coffee bean - wow!

In particular my partner and I are quite fond of the Organic Mexican beans. Full flavour while being quite creamy and nutty. If you have a tighter budget, why not try their house blends. They are not too bad, the espresso blend is probably the best they offer in that range. If you need ground beans, they will grind them to the style that suits your brew equipment. We prefer to grind them at home to ensure that the coffee is fresh. If you are searching for a gift for a coffee lover, look no further! Purchase them an Aeropress which are sold here.
