Paddy's Lantern have set up shop recently in what is oft thought of as the neglected and primarily residential side of Adelaide.... the (duh duh duuuuhn)_ south-west corner. Located really near the duke of Brunswick... another venue often neglected by myself, I am reminded what a pleasant venue it actually is and resolve to return soon. Paddy's Lantern do light meals, cakes, biscuits and - you guessed it my daily obsession, coffee. The first things I notice are, a) they call themselves a coffee lounge and b) they have a Synesso machine. They clearly get into all that single origin hoo-ha that's ripping through Adelaide at the moment, as there is a little information about the coffee they're using on the board. Food-wise there is a simple selection of light lunch / brekky options. Mushrooms on flatbread, ham and cheese toasties, muesli and toast. I opt for ocean trout on mylor pumpkin sourdough with horseradish neufchatel, it's the most expensive dish on the menu at $9... not exactly bank breaking stuff. It's delicious, fresh and wholesome but it's also obvious that the real star of the show here is the coffee and it doesn't dissapoint, delivering one of the best brews I've had in a while. The decor is simple without being too bland, there are a few tables out the front and 3 racks on the walls for bikes. There was talk of a ground based floor stand too... which is great for those of us who don't quite swing the fixie cred but love our wheels anyway.

Paddy's Lantern - What does that name mean you ask? I don't know, but what I do know is this little place tucked away in Gilbert Street describes the perfect morning coffee catchup or brunch date. From the smiling staff, to the welcoming and wonderful environment, this place won't disappoint. I will agree with others that the breakfast menu is quite small, but to be honest, you'll look straight past that tiny flaw once you indulge in the 'Smoked Ocean Trout on Pumpkin Sourdough with Horseradish Cream'. It was a sensational breakfast/brunch option - quite close to love at first sight! (Note: this is coming from a girl who rarely uses the word love + fish in the same sentence). Overall, a lovely experience. Thanks guys! Sincerely, #yelpintern

Special of the day - mixed mushrooms with goat's cheese and sour dough toast

Simple understated coffee class make this a stand out destination in the far south west. Technically Gouger, Grote and Morphett Sts are also SW so it's not like it's Mars we're visiting here!!! Parking is easy, there's outdoor seating, a communal bench and also an indoor toilet woo hoo!! I am mentioning because there appears to be a perception that this area is the wild (south) west. And there have been a few reviewed recently which had outdoor dunnies (not in the city I may add). Shock horror!! (Note to self probably should have remarked on in their reviews.) I digress - not only is the coffee fantastically brewed but the food is delightfully simple, extremely well priced and always consistently good. Although the menu is small - top quality ingredients ensure that all items selected are first class. As others concurred the smoked ocean trout on pumpkin sour dough is delish. Today I tried the special - mixed mushrooms with goat's cheese on sour dough and it was brilliant. Confession - I have a bit of a thing about mushrooms. I invariably find - particularly as an accompaniment to big brekkies at A LOT of Adelaide cafe's/hotels that they are horrible, black and taste weirdly unmushroom like. Obviously cooked in advance and reheated - NOT GOOD - and completely avoidable as fresh mushrooms only need minutes to saute. Well 100/100 to Paddy's Lantern's mushy delight - probably the best ever I have been served outside my own kitchen. I took a friend today who also remarked similarly. She was also blown away by the relaxing atmosphere, the great coffee and food, the brilliant prices and also that we didn't have to shout over everyone else's conversations even though Paddy's was full at lunchtime. Highly recommended for breakfast, brunch or lunch.

    Delish!

These guys are doing everything right. They have a cool/funky cafe, they make great coffee and the food is stunning. I love it when cafes source great quality products and serve simply no fuss food, that taste great. I had the smoked ocean trout on Mylor pumpkin sourdough, oh my god what a treat. I Can't recommend this place enough!

Small coffeehouse with some breakfast items. Thoroughly enjoyed my breakfast sandwich and the coffee is hand pressed by order.

The menu is large and interesting enough with not too many "generic" options except the ones you want such as Chocolate Fondu for 2 or 4. I had a Banana, Peanut Butter, Cookies, Vanilla Custard, Creamy concoction in a jar which was topped with icecream very very delish and beautifully presented. My companions had waffles, ice-cream and a yummy chocolate and berry mousse/pudding. All were very pleased with their orders and there was a lot of "would you mind if I had a fork full?" going on. Coffee and desserts came out all together and our table was cleared in an appropriate amount of time after we had finished our plates. Being a group of 6 is probably a little too large for the small outdoor space on the sidewalk with round tables and various chair heights, but we made it work. The only down side to this spot is that the coffee is "good" not "awesome"

Luckily, a table had just left, with a quick clean of the table - we were seated. Decor - Candles! I love candlelit places at night, the chairs were also quite comfy, some places which have the same modern/sleek vibe to it like this place, have uncomfortable plastic or metal chairs, but we were seated in comfortable cushy bliss for your butt! We ordered - I had the Cherry Ripe Waffle and one of their 'house specialities' the St Louis Hot Chocolate' Waffles: I have to admit I was disappointed in the waffle, this is what pushed it down to 3 stars rather than 4. The waffle was warm, but it tasted like it had been reheated, or simply defrosted and stuck in a microwave. It wasn't crunchy or fresh, the texture was chewy and dry. I chose this dish because it mentioned white chocolate and almonds, it was presented on the plate, but the white chocolate tasted like melted white chocolate buttons from the local supermarket, too sugary and it hard almost hardened when I tried to scoop it up to put on my waffle. The 'French Vanilla Ice Cream' tasted distinctively like Bulla Vanilla ice cream. The cherries, and cherry glaze were delicious though. The Hot chocolate: Average more or less, it was a good hot chocolate, but I've had better in most other places, for a house special, again I was hoping for a bit more, but I might be a little harsh here, as my friend said he absolutely loved it. I'd order it again if I came here, and that is usually a good sign. They had free water available for patrons, in the water was such things as citrus; oranges, lemons, lychee, and strawberry, I thought that was a little fancy. It was a nice touch to the place. If I came here again, I'd avoid the waffles completely, as they were sub-par. But the venue is a nice place, with a positive atmosphere. Why no white hot chocolate? This makes me sad.

When that has happened I do try other types of coffee from his available collection, but mostly it's the Mexican Organic I go for. Ross and his team have a very good range and even though it is an expensive item, some things in life just have to be right before I can deal with them. I do not like the effects of instant coffee on my system, I almost always end up with a stomach gripe if I drink instant coffee, and you simply don't want to know about that. So I usually drink plunger coffee, it is one of my special things in life I suppose. As far as The Coffee Bean Shop goes they stock a range of implements to create coffee in - mostly the little Italian stove-top espresso jugs, but I tend not to favour them because they are made from aluminium and I understand that too much aluminium heated and exposed to something you then drink can cause some brain function problems over time - just something I read that has stuck. That's why I plunge, but you know, the occasional aluminium jug espresso coffee is no big deal. They do the grinding for you if you need it done, and they use a range of coffee packets that are a nice plane brown bag, so its a pretty sustainable system. Their selection of products includes some pre-ground coffee beans in little plastic pails with a lid, a variety of fragrant and tasty teas, blends of the tea, and the coffee and tea making equipment I mentioned above plus other stuff and some specialty sweets that you'd have with a beverage, or give as a gift - try a chocolate coated coffee bean - wow!

It looks amazing, they really did a great job. I am happy to see that this stall got updated as it is often one of the first stall you see when entering the Markets from the carpark escalators. The staff at this stall are always very friendly and happy to have a chat about the different varieties of coffee and what they taste like. You will find some amazing beans from all over the world. In particular my partner and I are quite fond of the Organic Mexican beans. Full flavour while being quite creamy and nutty. If you have a tighter budget, why not try their house blends. They are not too bad, the espresso blend is probably the best they offer in that range. If you need ground beans, they will grind them to the style that suits your brew equipment. We prefer to grind them at home to ensure that the coffee is fresh. If you are searching for a gift for a coffee lover, look no further! Purchase them an Aeropress which are sold here. They are a single cup air pressure plunger. They make the perfect brew away from home. My partner loves his and uses it at work every day!
