Friendly servers, expensive food. So very expensive for typical American food :') it surprised me to see that dishes like the nachos didn't already come with meat...and to add even chicken it would've costed an extra $6. We were so excited to try this new addition to Juanita and revamp from the old J Bay and it did not disappoint. Upon entering to your immediate right is an almost floor to ceiling live wall (moss/plant). In case you aren't sure if it's real there's a plaque that reads "Please don't touch me, I'm alive." We got in w/o a reservation for two on a Wednesday evening around 7pm and sat at a high top in the bar. Jasmine was a fabulous server & the manager or owner stopped by to check on us. Cocktails were excellent! I had the seafood chowder and bread/butter (fresh made herbed butter). Chowder was a 5/5! Can't wait to come back for a bowl instead of a cup! Then I had the veggie chop salad w/ spicy yogurt dressing, a welcome reprieve after the hot chowder. Wish I had added shrimp or chicken though. Hubby had the spicy chicken sandwich...he loved but wished it had some avocado added to it. We passed on the banana bread dessert as we were stuffed! Our first time here and we loved it! We shared the buratta and ceviche starters and then the scallops and pork belly - it was all delicious. They also had a great selection of bourbons and ryes for my Old Fashioned and I went with the local Mischief rye ... good stuff! Come here for date night luke we did. read more

Wanted to stay on the Eastside for Valentines dinner and found Sparrow. The bar looked like a great place to hang out but we sat at a table. The place was hopping for sure. Not sure who our server was but she was young with a facial piercing. She was amazing. Super attentive, very friendly and held a conversation with us. We had the burrata to start and it was really good. The scallops were well cooked. They were out of swordfish and subbed sea bass instead. It was really well prepared. Popped into Sparrow to try their happy hour on Saturday afternoon and we couldn't have been more pleased. We enjoyed a couple of really nice cocktails, along with a tasty tuna tartare and lamb birria tacos, out on the patio. It was a lovely environment and Alex was a fabulous server. Went last night with my wife for a cocktail and appetizer. This was our 4th time there, and once again we were quite pleased! We love sitting at the bar and watching the action and interacting with the staff. They really know their stuff and the drinks were on point! Tried to new chicken tacos with homemade tortillas and they were amazing! Just be warned that their homemade salsa is quite spicy! Best part for me is I can walk home after having drinks! This neighborhood was so overdue for a nice restaurant like this. Hope they continue to do well. read more

Giving it a 3.5 star rating. As many have mentioned, the ambiance is great inside. Light fixtures just above make each table feel very intimate. The reindeer moss walls are very instagramable. Even the name sounds cool and trendy. We were seated very quickly with our reservations, but once we got to the table the service became very slow. I'm not sure if our server was overwhelmed or under-trained (or both) but she'd go to the table next to us then rush to a totally different table then disappear then finally come to our table. It was very chaotic. In all, wife and I spent two hours here even though we only got to order a couple shareables and a few drinks. The food has some Mexican influences, but staff seems unfamiliar with the names on the menu. Not a great look. They have a sizable spirits selection though, which I loved. Highlight for me was Del Humo y Tierra. Think of it like an Old Fashioned but using sotol (a smoky spirit similar to mezcal) instead of whiskey. I really wanted to like this place but the slow, chaotic service and underwhelming food were a disappointment. There is potential here for a great spot, as long as they iron out some kinks. read more

4/12/24. Left a roughly 10% tip for a final charge of $76.55: 63.63 (subtotal) + 6.46 (tax) + 6.46 (tip). 4/19. Discovered my credit card was over charged by $7.54. Appeared someone decided to change the tip to an even $14. (63.63 + 6.46 + 14). Accident? Purposeful? 4/19. Reached out to Sparrow. 4/20. Heard nothing from Sparrow, so I started to prepare my dispute with my bank. 4/30. Had not received ANY response from Sparrow. A $7.54 adjustment appeared online for my card. So, what's going on here? 1. I had receipts. I rarely keep receipts for services. But the service just gave me a feeling to hang on to them. Do you want a place where you can leave feeling confident that you won't later be overcharged? Or a place where you feel like you better grip your receipts? 2. No response. I reached out directly to the merchant first and received no response - even to this day (5/2). Do you want a place where management will engage with you over a dispute? Or a place where the only way to get resolution is through your credit card? Step back and look at the bigger picture. Sparrow never inquired as to why I only left a 10% tip. They should have first addressed the over charge. And then said something like, "I see that the tip amount was only 10%. Would you mind telling me if there was an issue with the food or service?" Bam! What an awesome opportunity to obtain interactive feedback. The fact that Sparrow made no attempt to inquire about my experience is more egregious than the overcharge. So, am I just cheap and always only leave 10%? Or were there issues? To my left, at the bar, was a couple. To my right were four unbussed (dirty) seats. I was there for maybe an hour, and the seats to my right didn't get bussed until just before I left. The couple to my left departed about half-way through my time and their seats remained unbussed. I ordered a glass of wine. After more than just a few minutes, the bartender returned and said something like, "So just having wine this evening?" Huh? A normal bartender would go ahead and ask for a food order. A great bartender would say something like, "That wine would go great with X." After I my entrée was served, the bartender didn't return to ask me about it until maybe 15 minutes later. The bartender passed by my now empty wine glass about six times. If I have to flag someone down for service, then you should tip me at the end. I finally ordered a second wine and the bartender poured it into the same glass. Was given a bill for around $55, but then the credit card bill was for around $70. The unbussed tables initially were just an aesthetic issue. But it's a bad sign when they stayed that way for about 50 minutes. SOMEONE should have cleared them. Where's management? You should have a standard in place - like all tables must be bussed within X minutes. Great service providers offer suggestions. I can imagine your servers going to a table at the end, shaking their head no and saying, "You didn't want any desert, right?" ALWAYS check back with a guest within one minute after the entrée has been dropped off. ALWAYS asks the guest if he/she wants a second drink BEFORE the current one goes empty. ALWAYS pour a new glass of wine into a NEW glass (when ordering by the glass). ALWAYS communicate and take ownership of mistakes. The discrepancy between the bill and credit card bill was because apparently the bartender realized her forgot to add the second wine - but he said nothing. How about, "Oops. I printed the first bill too fast. Here's a corrected receipt." Just COMMUNICATE. Get back to basics and deal with simple fundamentals, as they are more important than your nice wood ceilings. I didn't eat the wood, nor did the wood provide any service. Focus on contents and not the cover. Your prices are high, but NOT an issue SO LONG AS the price is commensurate with the service. Either raise your service or lower your prices. Finally: The TV. Reasonable minds can differ as to whether there should be one. If you're trying to compete against Red Robin - then go ahead and keep it. read more

It was OK, not good. We saw they opened up and give it a try. We ordered a couple appetizers, entrees, drinks, and dessert. The best were the tacos, the spicy chicken sandwich was not spicy at all. Most of the food was bland and under seasoned. The place was clearly understaffed and there were a lot of tables waiting around. It seemed like one person took care of half the place. The atmosphere is dark, loud, and very tight quarters if you sit at the bench/chair spots. It was worth the shot but we won't go there again. Plenty of other options and we would rather go out to Brix. The price for what you got was not adequate. Seattle prices for so-so restaurant. read more

After all the great reviews I was so excited to try Sparrow. I came for brunch, not dinner. I think they just started brunch, they don't have a menu posted online yet and I couldn't find any reviews about it so I think they might still be finding what works for them. The first thing that we immediately found so weird when looking at the menu was the eggs Benedict you have to pay $8 extra to add Canadian bacon. I have never seen eggs Benedict come without Canadian bacon but to add it $8 seems very extreme. The prices did seem pretty high and we weren't overly impressed by the menu. I ended up getting the eggs Benedict and got a side of bacon for $4 because I could not justify $8 for Canadian bacon. One of my friends got the vegetarian avocado toast with a side of sausage, she said it was okay but nothing special and pretty small. My other friend got the chilaquiles, good nothing amazing though. We also got espresso martinis which we didn't end up finishing they weren't great. I think they are charging more than the food is worth. I will say the breakfast potatoes were very good and had a really nice seasoning. The service was good. I would like to come back for dinner since the reviews for dinner seem to be very good. read more

Went to Sparrow for the first time yesterday afternoon and will definitely be back! The food and the service was amazing! We sat in the bar area and were taken care of by Jasmin. She gave us great recommendations on dishes and substitutions. We went with every recommendation she gave us and were so happy. I got the Prime Bavette Steak and added the house-made corn paprika mashed potatoes. To drink I had the Juanita Rita and it was delicious!!! My wife got the Seafood Chowder and Scallops & Pork Belly. To drink she got the cucumber gimlet and fell in love after the first sip. We loved everything and can't wait to come back to try other dishes! read more

Overall the food is fine, nothing extraordinary but a little expensive for "just fine" food. I've only had brunch but wonder if dinner is better? Also the service is very very slow. A new addition to the Kirkland Juanita neighborhood (6-7 mins from downtown), Sparrow opened in July in place of JBay Bar & Grill. The service and cocktails were great. The ambiance was updated, dark, and hipster. We sat at a high top table (it was a little isolated), would recommend sitting in a booth or at the bar. We had the juanita-ritas, mussels, spicy tuna tartare, and carbonara. Would come again for cocktails or if I wanted to bring my dog and sit outside! read more

The ambience and service was nice overall but the food was a great disappointment. The avocado that came with the avocado and burrata didn't seem fresh as it was slightly discolored. I went with my elderly Mom to Sparrow for brunch when it first opened. The first experience was great -- they sat us in a nice booth and the owner or chef came out to check on our meal. We then came back about a week later -- this time the same seater saw us, and we had an okay meal. The portions were small, but we still got to sit in a nice area. Then I went for drinks with my wife a few days later and saw the same staff. The wine was pricey, but we had a nice visit. The 4rd time my Mom and I came back about a week after that for another early brunch. This time the same seater had no recollection of us and sat us in less nice bench area (still ample seating everywhere) and the food was cold, they didn't give us our to-go box and overall, we were much less impressed. I decided to avoid it for a while. Fast forward about 6 months we decided to go to brunch again. Even though we got there right at opening, they sat us 4 customer groups elbow to elbow on a large bench set in a dark corner. The food was mediocre, the portions were small and when asked for salt and pepper, the pepper was unportable with a single (!) blocked up pore shaker which struck me as very odd. They also had raised prices, with the top-end entree being an eye-popping $45+ dollars (I think it was $48?). This is especially ironic to me since this place use to be a dive bar and is not in a very nice location. When paying the bill, the server stood over me with a handheld billing device that coughed up the default tip rates of 20/22/25%. When did we start getting tip inflation? It's a percent! I won't be going back to this place any time soon -- it seems like it's simply geared to get top dollar from the customers w/o providing much value. read more

Honestly this was beyond disheartening. I spent the day in this area and suggested going to this restaurant for the aesthetic and to enjoy a fine dining experience with friends. The whole experience was disgraceful to say the least. First I get there and the host was great. Our server comes and had a bad attitude as soon as our party sat down. I asked for ice for my water and he didn't come back until after I asked for my food with a hair in it to be remade (40 minutes later). Asked for toast without avocado and he brought it with avocado and an extra side of it. The host brought my food, ice, etc. Server was completely inexistent and the disrespect of it all was that we watched him cater to the tables around us. The last straw was when I found hair in my food. At that point I went to the manager and he was completely incompetent and without compassion. I then asked him to remake the food and he agreed. By the time I got the food I wasn't even hungry. About 25 minutes passed by and the table had already eaten their food so I asked for my check. At that point our waiter who we hadn't seen since he took our order finally had came out with my food! The manager came out and offered to compensate the food but instead he kept the order on there and charged my party for food I didn't even eat. I would highly suggest you not eat here. You would not only risk your health but also your bank account. I can only imagine if I ate that plate. What I did taste of this place was also very bland. read more
