Cute little place with good food and informal setting. Their dishes are pretty nicely thought out but oftentimes a number of them will be "out of stock" even leading into dinner time, but this is understandable if that's because they're aiming for freshness. What is not so great is that they've replaced human interaction and paper menus with a QR code based menu (annoying but becoming more common) and the only way to order is also through your phone (this is the part that is not common and really sucks). Been to DERU twice. First time my phone wouldn't let the order submit after polling everyone to put what they wanted into the "cart". Eventually some poor fellow who worked there had to use his little iPad and we all had to repeat ourselves to recreate the order after we'd already done the exercise on my phone. Second visit same thing- this time we had to recreate the order a few times on different peoples phones in our party until one of them could finally submit the purchase, and then they immediately started getting emails they weren't expecting as an outcome, their cell phone number was on our order ticket- so beware when you think you're just providing your credit card info- you're actually giving much more than that. We gathered for dinner to spend quality time together in real life and to get away from our phones but because of DERU's ordering system we instead spent the first 20 minutes of our dinner all on our phones. Then during the meal people would finish their glass of wine and want another- phone comes back out! This happened throughout the meal because, shockingly, people don't finish their glasses of wine at the same time, so all in all someone was pretty much on their phone close to the entire meal. Quite antithetical to the goal of human interaction and enjoying a nice dinner together. If they got rid of this ridiculous phone based menu and ordering system I would double my rating AND my tip. We joined at the restaurant and although there were tons of empty tables and we arrived pretty early we still had a 45 minute wait. Pretty hard with a toddler. The front is all parking and there's street parking. Not a lot of safe space to let a toddler run about. Food - chai tea - on the sweet side for chai - coconut cake - a tad too sweet for our taste and a bit dry - fries to share - fried chicken and gravy - saucy and tasty but wish it came with toast or biscuits - sandwich - my husband got this and it was ok. A little too wet for my taste. Overall, not a bad experience but compared to other spots it fell short. Maybe if we had jumped on the waitlist sooner and waited less it would have been better for us. DERU Market is my absolute favorite lunch and dinner destination. The farm to table menu offers something for everyone, and each dish delivers what wholesome food should taste like. Dining in is an option, I've only experienced to go as it's most convenient for my family. Ordering is always easy, text messages about the order status allows for ideal arrival time. The customer service yielded by the DERU team is always excellent, even for larger orders they always make sure the orders are accurate and any additional condiments and flatware are included. I dream about DERU's Carrot Cake! They're most known for their insane baked goods- think cakes, pastries, and focaccia. Everything is insanely good, but their carrot cake was the real star for me. THE best I've had by far! You can stop by all day: coffee and sweets for the morning, sandwiches for lunch, and a full dinner menu! Came on a weekend when it was really crowded. Really excited to try this place as I've heard good things about it and love that they use fresh farm ingredients. Had a total party size of two. We even added our names, but when we got led to our seats, we were put at the barstools. There were plenty of other parties of two that arrived after us that got tables plus there were some empty tables for two that we saw as well. So we requested a table instead of the bar area, but the server told us the manager didn't want us sitting there. Didn't make much sense when there were empty tables. Maybe they had some reasoning or structure for weekend crowds they they had to follow, not sure, but we had to stay seated at the bar area. We ordered a Margherita pizza to split as well as a slice of carrot cake as I've heard a lot of good things about these items. The pizza had really fresh ingredients and the sauce and tomatoes were tasty, however the dough was incredibly salty and made it difficult to eat. This was my first time at Deru Market, but I assume it isn't always this salty and could have been a one-time thing. The slice of carrot cake was pretty expensive (around $14) but it's huge and good to split amongst 2-3 people. I liked the generous serving of nuts and shredded carrot inside. Cream cheese frosting was still a bit too sweet for me (think I prefer Deep Sea Sugar and Salt's to this) and I had to remove most of it, but the cake was overall pretty good though a little on the dry side. I get why this place is popular, but I don't think I had the best first time experience here. With the high number of positive reviews though, maybe they were just having a bad day since it was a Saturday and pretty crowded, so I'm hoping to come back again in the future, during like a seasonal special if they have any. read more

My friend and I waited 1.5 hours on a Sunday morning and it was worth it! The chicken goat cheese focaccia sandwich and cauliflower were both amazing, perfectly balanced and well-cooked. We got the lemon poppyseed cake and it was the biggest slice of cake I've ever seen (photos don't do it justice, it was bigger than our heads!) - it was a bit too sweet for my liking but the savory dishes were really delicious. Anytime I'm drinking vinho verde, the chances of a 5 star review go up, up, up. Thankfully, my Yelp friends didn't steer me wrong on this one. We started with the fresh garden salad with pepitas. greens, herby dressing and pickled carrots at Deru, then dove into two wood fired, blistered pizzas, the mushroom and the pepperoni. Add a bottle of vinho verde and who could complain? The ordering process was a little confusing at first, but the second visit should be easier. We took my Mom to DERU Market on the Saturday before Mother's Day and it was a big hit. There was a wait but the staff gave us a realistic estimate of the wait and they take your number and text you when your table is ready. They have both great outdoor seating and inviting indoor dining as well. I started with a nice London Fog made with Earl Gray from Smith Teamaker. It comes in one size - large. My Mom got the Eggs Benedict with fresh dill which she enjoyed even though there was a slight hiccup. The English muffin under the eggs was over toasted and was very difficult to cut with a knife. But the staff was very gracious and remade the whole thing in no time. I got the roast chicken with goat cheese sandwich and my wife got the smoked turkey sandwich. Both come on bread they bake themselves. The fresh greens on both really elevated the sandwiches. DERU also has an excellent bakery case. We ordered a slice of the Coconut cake. My hubs and I took his mom to DERU Market to celebrate Mother's Day the day before (Saturday). Even though not everything went well, it was such a great experience that we will for sure come back again. I signed up for the waitlist at 11:15am before we left for the restaurant. When we got there at 11:40am, we checked in and the staffer said it would be approximately an hour to hour and a half wait on top of our already 25 minute wait. Whoa! We didn't know these were typical weekend waiting times. My MIL was willing to wait so we took off and came back in an hour. At that time, they were able to seat our party of three at a table outside. So, it took us about 90 minutes total to get seated. Note to future diners to get on the waitlist early if you're coming for weekend brunch!!! You use a QR code to order from an online menu. Liked how detailed the menu was and how we could remove or add ingredients. With my dairy and eggs intolerance, this comes in handy. My MIL ordered Eggs Benedict, I got the smoked turkey sandwich on focaccia, and my hubs got the chicken sandwich on focaccia. Our sandwiches were packed with lots of deliciousness, but my MIL's English muffin was toasted so hard she couldn't even cut through it with a steak knife. So she sent it back and she also asked for her poached eggs to be cooked harder. The staff member was apologetic and said no problem. It took a while to cook it, but when she got her remade Eggs Benedict, she really liked it. We split a slice of apple bread which was delicious. So happy it was dairy free! My hubs also enjoyed his London Fog. My MIL got a huge slice of coconut cake to go and loved eating it later, telling us it was very moist and coconutty. It was a bright day with nice weather and was a perfect time to try out DERU Market. Even though it was very busy, all of the staff were friendly and attentive. They worked like a well-oiled machine. Parking is also kinda crazy since DERU's dedicated parking area is pretty limited. I ordered a matcha latte and the market scramble. You guys by now know I love Deru especially with how amazing their menu items have been of late. Unfortunately for this instance it didn't go as well which is why I'm docking the star. So I come in after work and I'm very aware of how limited items are so I order my delicious coffee cake to go. We sat, had delicious decaf coffee and a slice of chocolate cake. After many years, I finally had the opportunity to visit DERU Market with friends for brunch on a chilly Sunday morning. DERU is known for their sandwiches, pastries, and huge cakes (at least 16' rounds) including their signature Salted Peanut Butter Cake. A friend bought me a slice of their peanut butter cake years back, and if you like chocolate and peanut butter, this is the cake for you! I was surprised that DERU is tucked away in a neighborhood and are located near some automobile repair places and not off the main Kirkland drag. They have a small parking lot and limited street parking- I get why many people opt to do takeout here instead of fight for a spot. My friends and I arrived at DERU at 9:40am, but there was already a 45-minute wait for seating indoors (note that the restaurant is super small with only a handful of tables and some coffee bar seating). However, they had outdoor seating available immediately and so we opted to brace the cold and sit outside. The waitress offered blankets, but they DO NOT have any outdoor heating lamps for the colder fall and winter months. So make sure to bring your puffer coat and gloves! TIP: While DERU does not take reservations, they do apparently have a waiting list online. Next time, I will get on the waiting list while I am driving to save time and hopefully get a table indoors next time. DERU starts serving their lunch menu at 10am, but breakfast options are available from 8am-3pm on weekends. I ordered the: - 12-OZ 1/2 CAF LATTE ($4.50) with CINNAMON GINGER SYRUP (+$0.50) and OAT MILK (+$1.50): this might have been the BEST LATTE I've had in a long time. The milk was super creamy, the espresso was smooth, and the cinnamon ginger syrup added the perfect sweetness and spice (I didn't even have to ask for half sweet!). It was steaming hot and served in a cute bowl. - SMOKED TURKEY SANDWICH COMBO WITH SALAD ($17.50): the sandwich was toasted to perfection. It came with an abundance of greens, layers of smoked turkey, thinly sliced apple, and cheese on toasted focaccia bread. The salad was fantastic too and was a pile of different greens mixed with herbs like dill which added a nice unique twist to your typical salad. It was lightly dressed in a vinaigrette and served with roasted carrots and feta or goat cheese. My total with tax and tip came out to just over $30, which is definitely on the pricey side for a sandwich and drink. They were also out of many items including hot soup (which i would've opted for instead of the salad to stay warm) and vegetarian sandwiches. Service was great and the servers are very friendly. You can order and pay through the QR code on the table or you can ask them for a paper menu and order with the server instead. My partner got a pizza and I got the roasted chicken & goat cheese sandwich. The bread on the sandwich was kind of like a focaccia and was so good. The sandwich was well balanced in flavors too. The "vegetable soup" that came with it turned out to be butternut squash, which was a bit of a surprise and I was kind of disappointed as it's lower on the soup tier list for me. The pizza was good, but nothing super outstanding. We also got garlic knots for the table and those were tasty with the marinara sauce they came with. Drinks were decent. Expect a LONG wait - usually 60+ minutes. Parking is also super limited and they only have a single toilet restroom so the wait for the toilet can be awhile too. Salted Peanut Butter, rich, chocolatey, even richer with peanut butter and it's actually not too sweet. Our family usually doesn't get one slice, but two or three for variety. Try the Coconut cake! Nicely done, also not overly sweet. Try the Carrot cake. Also not too sweet. Deru cakes are all balanced on the sweetness levels. On nice days, sitting outdoors can be so relaxing. My friend and I planned ahead and got to DERU relatively early. We were fortunate and an inside spot for us became available relatively quickly. Ordering is through a QR code on your phone. We got the DERU fries - everyone raves about them and rightfully so! I also ordered a latte that came in a bowl the size of my head, which is the appropriate size for max caffeination! My friend ordered a shredded pork sandwich with delicious looking focaccia bread and I ordered eggs benedict that came with scrumptious fingerling potatoes. Everything we ate for brunch was amazing. After we sat down, things got very busy and we did have to remind our server that we had ordered cake slices to go. He was incredibly kind, however, and brought the desserts asap. We tried the dark chocolate cake later in the day. The frosting was very good and chocolatey, but the cake had some dry chunks scattered within the sponge. I ordered the peanut butter cake for another friend and she also found the dry bits in her cake. Came here once for pick up, once for dine in. The pick up time was around peak lunch time. They know their customer base. You can order ahead online, and they have a really convenient curbside pick up area when you pull into the lot. Parking is limited, and they understand that! This is how you know this place is customer-focused. Don't be fooled by the size of the sandwich! The bread is a thick, fluffy, fresh focaccia bread, and they don't skimp out on meat. I also love that they do a half salad half sandwich combo, and their salads are pretty hearty and flavorful all while still being light and refreshing! Knowing how busy it gets, the second time I came here, I strategically planned to come during off peak hours (~3:30-4:00 pm) on a Tuesday so I could try their dine in experience. Got seated immediately at the bar, ordered by QR code. Although the menu items will feel extremely pricey, like a slice of cake for $16, there wasn't a single thing that wasn't worth the price. The quality really shows in each item menu, even their coffees and teas. Their coffee also paired really well with the carrot cake, and the London fog was a perfect blend of foamy, rich comfort in a cup. Left feeling like I ate a lot, but not like heavy diner food. Known for their cakes, that's exactly what I came for. We arrived on a rainy Saturday around late lunch time, and were lucky to get a table immediately. We got the chocolate, coconut, and seasonal pumpkin cakes. These slices are absolutely MASSIVE so keep that in mind when you order. They are all absolutely divine though - the cake is so moist yet dense and rich, and the cream complements it very well. I absolutely loved all of them, and they were all good in their own ways. The chocolate was the richest, while the coconut had a unique texture due to the coconut flakes, and the pumpkin was the moistest. Must try for some of the best cakes! read more

First time here and heard great reviews! We don't come to Kirkland much but I am definitely adding this to my list! We got a beef pizza and French fries. Everything tasted so fresh and delicious. I see that they have a different menu for lunch and dinner I really wanted to try the carbonara but I guess it's on the lunch menu. Sandwiches looked good so I will be back to try that too! read more

The farm salad here is always sooo good! I tired a different type of pizza this time than what I normally get and I wasn't a fan. The pizza was dry and so was the chicken. Service, as always, was ok. read more

We are regulars at DERU and it is consistently excellent. In a small industrial pocket of Kirkland, you find a really casual and friendly vibe. There are a lot of menu options from grilled salmon to sandwiches to burgers to pizzas and pastas so there is something for everyone. Salads and grilled vegetables are also great with seasonal options. On our last visit I had the DERU burger for the first time which was the best burger I have had in some time. And, while the cake slices could easily feed 4 people, they are all fantastic. Service is fast and friendly. Note you aren't going to get a well paced multi course experience-but it comes out fast.
