Believe the HYPE!! The densely chocolate, peanut butter, airy frosting cake is TOP TIER! You won't be disappointed if these are the flavor profiles, you are into!! My mom recently had a 75th birthday and the woman loves a sweet treat! I know that when I would fly over from NY, this would be one of our first stops. I wanted to take both my parents out for coffee and dessert. Our waitress was an absolute dream. The service was so stellar that morning. Yes, we ate cake at 9:39 am but it was way after our breakfast and before our nice walk in downtown Kirkland. We looked at the desserts before sitting down. There was a tray of a rhubarb crumb that looked good. I asked for that and the chocolate cake. I ordered a large cappuccino, my dad an americano and my mom got a latte. While the coffees were being made someone came in and snagged the whole tray because of Mother's Day. We made a decision to get the carrot cake. Secretly I think my dad was hoping for a Carrot Cake. We enjoyed both cakes and the cake slices were huge! I love baking myself and understand ingredients are not cheap so I believe they are very much worth the price. The space was nice and clean. Great classic American food in Kirkland. Came here at 12:30PM and it was completely packed, but luckily two open seats outside. It was pretty cold this day, but luckily they have blankets if you need. You can order through the QR code on the table, and the food comes pretty fast. We got the salted caramel latte, rosemary cream pizza, smoked turkey sandwich, and fries. The salted caramel latte is creamy, salty, and roasty. It comes in this massive bowl cup which is fun to drink out of haha. The rosemary cream pizza was super aromatic and savory, and the crust was fluffy. Loved the potato and bacon on it. The sandwich had a soft and fluffy focaccia, and I appreciated the generous amount of arugula piled in. The apple inside was a great contrast to the white cheddar inside. And the fries were super well seasoned with a delicious aioli. I would've taken home to aioli if I wasn't just visiting for the weekend. My friend actually used to work here and recommended the salted peanut butter cake, house herb focaccia, and apple and arugula pizza, which I'd love to try the next time I'm back in Seattle! read more

My hubs and I took his mom to DERU Market to celebrate Mother's Day the day before (Saturday). Even though not everything went well, it was such a great experience that we will for sure come back again. I signed up for the waitlist at 11:15am before we left for the restaurant. When we got there at 11:40am, we checked in and the staffer said it would be approximately an hour to hour and a half wait on top of our already 25 minute wait. Whoa! We didn't know these were typical weekend waiting times. My MIL was willing to wait so we took off and came back in an hour. At that time, they were able to seat our party of three at a table outside. So, it took us about 90 minutes total to get seated. Note to future diners to get on the waitlist early if you're coming for weekend brunch!!! You use a QR code to order from an online menu. Liked how detailed the menu was and how we could remove or add ingredients. With my dairy and eggs intolerance, this comes in handy. My MIL ordered Eggs Benedict, I got the smoked turkey sandwich on focaccia, and my hubs got the chicken sandwich on focaccia. Our sandwiches were packed with lots of deliciousness, but my MIL's English muffin was toasted so hard she couldn't even cut through it with a steak knife. So she sent it back and she also asked for her poached eggs to be cooked harder. The staff member was apologetic and said no problem. It took a while to cook it, but when she got her remade Eggs Benedict, she really liked it. We split a slice of apple bread which was delicious. So happy it was dairy free! My hubs also enjoyed his London Fog. My MIL got a huge slice of coconut cake to go and loved eating it later, telling us it was very moist and coconutty. It was a bright day with nice weather and was a perfect time to try out DERU Market. Even though it was very busy, all of the staff were friendly and attentive. They worked like a well-oiled machine. Wow, this spot is popular! Reasonable prices and delicious food. I visited on a sunny Wednesday for lunch and the restaurant is thriving. It's very lively, has indoor & outdoor seating, and even a busy curbside pickup. Parking is limited but there is plenty on the surrounding streets. For the food - The salad was amazing and fresh, pizza was great too. DERU Market is known for their delicious cakes, so save room (and time) for dessert! Pro tip, there is an online wait list you can join ahead of time, but it doesn't give a wait estimate unfortunately, so you will have to ask up front. read more

First time here and heard great reviews! We don't come to Kirkland much but I am definitely adding this to my list! We got a beef pizza and French fries. Everything tasted so fresh and delicious. I see that they have a different menu for lunch and dinner I really wanted to try the carbonara but I guess it's on the lunch menu. A lot of hype around a spot means a long wait and that's what we definitely had. For a table for 2, we waited ~1 hr for a counter seat outdoors. Parking is also kinda crazy since DERU's dedicated parking area is pretty limited. I ordered a matcha latte and the market scramble. Matcha latte was okay, color was not super bright, and the flavor itself was watery and not creamy. The scramble on the other hand was super creamy and delicious. I loved the variety of herbs and the crispy bits of potato. Would've been even better with some sourdough toast to go with it though. Overall, a pretty good experience. You guys by now know I love Deru especially with how amazing their menu items have been of late. Unfortunately for this instance it didn't go as well which is why I'm docking the star. So I come in after work and I'm very aware of how limited items are so I order my delicious coffee cake to go. We sat, had delicious decaf coffee and a slice of chocolate cake. One of my colleagues ordered a peanut butter cookie and OMG was soooo delicious (this is different than the gluten free one they've had for a while, which is also delicious) Now it took an ungodly long time to get anyone's attention to get our to go orders out, which was unacceptable when I could see the two young ladies talking behind the bar. I get the comradery but 20min of none stop, I will not look at you, got to be a bit much. So when we flagged someone who wasn't our waitress finally and asked for our to go orders, well... they hadn't packed it I don't even think they knew we had ordered till we mentioned and by then the cake was gone... Deru is great! Always great food and ambiance. The outdoor seating is nice. A little chilly in the winter time but there are heaters and blankets available. Summers are very nice especially when all the windows are open. Very busy on the weekend. I always get a sandwich. The sandwiches are unique, fresh, and quite large. I really like the coffee as well. Nice little spot for a casual breakfast/lunch. The wait can get pretty long, so be prepared for that. I went during lunch time and the menu was mainly pizzas and sandwiches. My partner got a pizza and I got the roasted chicken & goat cheese sandwich. The bread on the sandwich was kind of like a focaccia and was so good. The sandwich was well balanced in flavors too. The "vegetable soup" that came with it turned out to be butternut squash, which was a bit of a surprise and I was kind of disappointed as it's lower on the soup tier list for me. The pizza was good, but nothing super outstanding. We also got garlic knots for the table and those were tasty with the marinara sauce they came with. Drinks were decent. Our table got a latte, an Americano and a matcha latte. My matcha latte seemed to be lacking sweetness and the taste of honey was not there even though it said it came with it. I've been wanting to go to Deru for a while. I've heard nothing but great reviews and now I know why. The place is pretty popular, and don't have a lot of seating. So, highly recommend planning before your visit. They do have a waitlist, if that helps. The lady who helped us was extremely sweet. She was just too kind throughout. And coming to the food, we had the mushroom pizza, the garlic knots, sweet potato fries and a coffee cake. Everything was so fresh and tasted absolutely delicious. Curbside ordered the sweet potato fries, blueberry brioche, and the cold brew. The take out experience has you pull out front and the staff greets you immediately! The servings were huge! After many years, I finally had the opportunity to visit DERU Market with friends for brunch on a chilly Sunday morning. DERU is known for their sandwiches, pastries, and huge cakes (at least 16' rounds) including their signature Salted Peanut Butter Cake. A friend bought me a slice of their peanut butter cake years back, and if you like chocolate and peanut butter, this is the cake for you! I was surprised that DERU is tucked away in a neighborhood and are located near some automobile repair places and not off the main Kirkland drag. They have a small parking lot and limited street parking- I get why many people opt to do takeout here instead of fight for a spot. My friends and I arrived at DERU at 9:40am, but there was already a 45-minute wait for seating indoors (note that the restaurant is super small with only a handful of tables and some coffee bar seating). However, they had outdoor seating available immediately and so we opted to brace the cold and sit outside. The waitress offered blankets, but they DO NOT have any outdoor heating lamps for the colder fall and winter months. So make sure to bring your puffer coat and gloves! TIP: While DERU does not take reservations, they do apparently have a waiting list online. Next time, I will get on the waiting list while I am driving to save time and hopefully get a table indoors next time. DERU starts serving their lunch menu at 10am, but breakfast options are available from 8am-3pm on weekends. I ordered the: - 12-OZ 1/2 CAF LATTE ($4.50) with CINNAMON GINGER SYRUP (+$0.50) and OAT MILK (+$1.50): this might have been the BEST LATTE I've had in a long time. The milk was super creamy, the espresso was smooth, and the cinnamon ginger syrup added the perfect sweetness and spice (I didn't even have to ask for half sweet!). It was steaming hot and served in a cute bowl. - SMOKED TURKEY SANDWICH COMBO WITH SALAD ($17.50): the sandwich was toasted to perfection. It came with an abundance of greens, layers of smoked turkey, thinly sliced apple, and cheese on toasted focaccia bread. The salad was fantastic too and was a pile of different greens mixed with herbs like dill which added a nice unique twist to your typical salad. It was lightly dressed in a vinaigrette and served with roasted carrots and feta or goat cheese. My total with tax and tip came out to just over $30, which is definitely on the pricey side for a sandwich and drink. They were also out of many items including hot soup (which i would've opted for instead of the salad to stay warm) and vegetarian sandwiches. Service was great and the servers are very friendly. You can order and pay through the QR code on the table or you can ask them for a paper menu and order with the server instead. Been enjoying DERU for nearly a decade (?) now! This is such a great place to eat. Tucked away in an unsuspecting neighborhood in Kirkland. The turkey sandwich with salad combo is my favorite. Also love their fries! Can't go wrong with their coffee or matcha either. And the baked goods - OFF THE CHARTS! As a huge cookie lover, I love their cookies but their cake is also a huge hit. Expect a LONG wait - usually 60+ minutes. Parking is also super limited and they only have a single toilet restroom so the wait for the toilet can be awhile too. I used to love this place, all five stars. I hadn't gone back in a few years - and had lunch today for the first time in a while. Unfortunately, very subpar for both my dining mate and me! There was a wait on tables which was surprising for a rainy weekday morning, but not necessarily a bad thing (although one of the main reasons I hadn't gone back in so long). The seating is small inside, but there are seats outside. We didn't want to wait 20-30 min for inside, so we sat outside. I was surprised that although it was freezing outside, they offered only blankets (which had a stale stench to them) - but no heat lamps. Now to the food. The carrots were a 5/5, the highlight. But the rest went downhill from there. The matcha was light on the matcha, I mostly tasted milk. They didn't sweeten it which I actually liked, but I don't think is the usual standard? The fresh juice looked really overpriced and small. We had ordered a chicken sandwich (to which my friend stated that chick-fil-a is better), the carrots as mentioned earlier, the meatloaf (super dry, completely burnt?!, and the arugula "salad" was just arugula/dill/maybe parsley drencheddd in balsamic which was gross and I could not finish), and a sad pizza (neither of us were impressed - the crust looked good but was texturally doughy like bread instead of chewy like a good crust would be, and the pesto chicken was dry and chicken tasted old and overcooked, had that weird hormonal taste it gets when like that). My friend ordered a shredded pork sandwich with delicious looking focaccia bread and I ordered eggs benedict that came with scrumptious fingerling potatoes. Everything we ate for brunch was amazing. After we sat down, things got very busy and we did have to remind our server that we had ordered cake slices to go. He was incredibly kind, however, and brought the desserts asap. We tried the dark chocolate cake later in the day. The frosting was very good and chocolatey, but the cake had some dry chunks scattered within the sponge. I ordered the peanut butter cake for another friend and she also found the dry bits in her cake. You can order ahead online, and they have a really convenient curbside pick up area when you pull into the lot. Parking is limited, and they understand that! This is how you know this place is customer-focused. Don't be fooled by the size of the sandwich! The bread is a thick, fluffy, fresh focaccia bread, and they don't skimp out on meat. I also love that they do a half salad half sandwich combo, and their salads are pretty hearty and flavorful all while still being light and refreshing! Even something as simple as a turkey sandwich felt extremely elevated. Knowing how busy it gets, the second time I came here, I strategically planned to come during off peak hours (~3:30-4:00 pm) on a Tuesday so I could try their dine in experience. Got seated immediately at the bar, ordered by QR code. Although the menu items will feel extremely pricey, like a slice of cake for $16, there wasn't a single thing that wasn't worth the price. The quality really shows in each item menu, even their coffees and teas. Their coffee also paired really well with the carrot cake, and the London fog was a perfect blend of foamy, rich comfort in a cup. Left feeling like I ate a lot, but not like heavy diner food. Known for their cakes, that's exactly what I came for. We arrived on a rainy Saturday around late lunch time, and were lucky to get a table immediately. We got the chocolate, coconut, and seasonal pumpkin cakes. These slices are absolutely MASSIVE so keep that in mind when you order. They are all absolutely divine though - the cake is so moist yet dense and rich, and the cream complements it very well. I absolutely loved all of them, and they were all good in their own ways. They have a digital waitlist, menu and contactless ordering, although you can also place your order with the server. It is a very popular spot and even at 2pm on a weekday, there was a bit of a wait for a group of 7. By the time we finished our meal, there were many tables open. I love their Roasted Mushroom Pizza, with fresh mozzarella, goat cheese, roasted local organic mushrooms, kale, roasted garlic, olive oil and crushed red chilies--although I prefer it without the garlic. In addition to the pizza, I also tasted the Tomato Basil Soup and Kale + Sweet Potato Salad this time, which were just as flavorful. Really enjoyed my meal tonight at Deru! Their meatloaf with fig and pistachio was actually delicious. Enjoyed it with the arugula side salad. The garlic knots were to die for!!! Fresh, steaming, airy with a slight crisp when biting down, complimented well with their marinara sauce. The salted peanut butter cake reminded me of that one scene in Matilda with the chocolate cake. Really liked the peanut butter frosting with the moist dark chocolate cake! DERU is often touted as one of the must try restaurants in the Seattle area and I finally managed to get out there for a weeknight dinner. You are able to join the waitlist online, which I'd definitely recommend on the weekend, but at least on Thursdays, plenty of seating even if you're walking in. Overall, the ingredients were really nice, but I was just a little disappointed with the experience after hearing all the hype. Meat Lover's Pizza (3.5/5): The toppings were nicely balanced with some jalapeños and onions to break up the salty meats, but my real problem with this was the crust was too soft. I want my pizza to be able to hold up under the sauce and this just completely drooped when you picked up a slice. Flavor good, textures sad :(. Carbonara (4.25/5): Super creamy carbonara. Nothing mind blowing, but delicious nonetheless and great al dente pasta. Exactly what you want and meets expectations exactly. DERU Chocolate Cake (2.75/5): This just isn't really my style of chocolate cake. Ate fairly moist for a cake of that thickness, but it's really dense and the buttercream was too sweet and solid in texture for me (I'm more of a chantilly gal). Had a great experience last year so I wanted to bring my sister here for lunch but it wasn't as pleasant this year. We knew the wait would be long, but didn't mind since the place is known for great food and cake. The server delivering our fried chicken sandwiches was quite rude, saying "is that it?" In a rude tone, without any greeting or smile, while also forgetting the fries. Another person at the bar refilled our water glasses from the faucet without a word or any eye contact or simple acknowledgment of us sitting there apart from the empty glasses. I'm not sure why they were so rude to us, but it really took away from our lunch experience. As for the food, the fried chicken was dry, a bit overcooked and quite small for the price. It also does not come with fries so those need to be ordered on the side. I will say the best part was the carrot cake, but at this point, we were in a rush to leave after the disappointing experience. Came in on a Tuesday around 6:30 PM for my friend's birthday and we waited nearly an hour. I recommend getting on the virtual waitlist a little bit earlier so you don't have to wait so long. I was honestly getting overstimulated by the curbside pick up being right where people generally wait in line for a table since they don't have a separate waiting area for customers. Also, the indoor seating area can get really steamy in the summer. I don't think that they have air conditioning so just beware. Overall, the dishes were great. my personal favorites were the sweet potato and hummus, as well as the garlic knots. The garlic knots were perfectly soft and buttery on the inside and toasted on the outside. I love the fries. They were perfectly fried except they were a little bit too salty. For food, we ordered two pizzas (mushroom & sausage) and tomato soup and salad to share. The food was delicious and healing after a late night. It's also super cool that everything is made in house, including the jam and the caramel used in their lattes. Their coffee was delicious (though I did chuckle at how it was literally bigger than my cup of soup), the salad was fresh and perfectly seasoned, but the star of the show was definitely their carrot cake. Fairly popular farm to table restaurant that serves up sandwiches, salads, soup, pizza, etc. To me, these are the food that I don't normally seek as it feels too "boring" but after all the good things people speak about this place, I had to try it. Normally there can be 1+ hr wait times but because it was snowing and the weather is not the most favorable, I was able to get seated immediately. Zero wait will still show 5-15 minutes on the app, so I will still recommend joining the waitlist as courtesy to give them a heads up of your arrival, as they may need time to clear the table and prepare for the next party. I got their half roast beef sandwich half salad for $18+tax which is a pretty good amount of food. The half sandwich honestly looked like a full sandwich. It has generous amounts of roast beef, alongside a huge pile of arugula. It's hard to eat it as a regular sandwich, but it is lovely to just use the knife and cut small bite sized pieces with the respective ingredients to enjoy. The salad is also wonderful - I normally am not a salad person as I get picky with the dressing, but this one meshes all the flavor profiles really well. They also have cake, other pastries, and wine but just this one order got me really full so I wasn't able to have stomach space to enjoy them. Good lord this place is POPPIN. Before writing this I looked through some old reviews and it appears this place has been busy since the day it opened. Is this the best of the best in Kirkland? Maybe it is! Four of us (+ baby) planned an outing here and as expected, it was busy. We put our name in, they told us how long the wait would be, then we went and grabbed coffee at a place a few minutes away. No harm no foul, that's what we planned for and you should do the same! No physical menus, not even a menu on their website which I think is strange for how popular they are. Order at your table. Plenty of staff running around taking care of the essentials. If you sit outside you'll get a great view of the chaotic parking lot and all the take out orders. Yes it was crammed with our baby, but we made do. Food was great. I went with a more basic item, their classic breakfast platter. The bacon was extra delicious! Eggs were cooked nicely, toast was crisp, potatoes tender. For me, the jam and the greens were unnecessary and didn't do anything for the overall dish. We split fries for the table and these were very very tasty. My favorite part of the whole experience were the cakes we took home and had over the next night or two. These slices were ELITE. Especially the carrot cake. Like WOAH, hold the phone and stop in your tracks good. I'll be thinking about that cake for a long time. I get the hype. The ambiance is inviting and the presentation esthetic, but the food and pricing fell flat for my friend and I. We came on a sunny afternoon and sat at their patio to enjoy views... of the small, busy parking lot. We ordered the sweet potato hummus + seeds, rosemary cream pizza, fries, beet lemon muddle, and chocolate cake. The fries and drink were the star of the show - definitely get these! We appreciated the little details: the delicious fried lemon and rosemary on the fried and the crunchy seeds on top of sweet potato. The dips were also flavorful. However, the sweet potatoes and hummus were just alright and we couldn't taste the rosemary in the pizza. I was so excited to eat the biggest (and most expensive) piece of chocolate cake I've ever seen, but it was a surprising disappointment. The cake tasted so healthy and not sweet that it was almost bland, while the frosting and cream were too dense. The waitresses were seamless and nice in an impersonal way. One of them even asked the cook a question for me. But our visit ended poorly when we saw that they'd tacked on a $5.88 "custom" fee without telling us. The only customization we'd requested was for them to halve the amount of bacon on the pizza so this fee did not make sense. AMAZING RESTAURANT. Some of the most quality and fresh food for any time of day. We got the turkey sandwich and it was AMAZING. The broccoli and roasted carrots were also a great side choice. You truly can't go wrong. The pastries and cake looked INSANE - must try next time. I definitely recommend getting on the waitlist because the place is POPULAR. Much longer wait to sit inside as there isn't as much space, but we were able to sit outside (no heaters) instantly. Did not have a good experience for a weekend brunch. Food is mediocre, servers make your experience very stressful (especially if you have a child), and the environment is not fun. I'm not going back. Weekend brunch options are limited, and the quality is mediocre at best. We got the eggs benedict and market breakfast. The bread was hard and greasy, egg was low quality, way overpriced! Two different servers triple checked our order (is it that hard to take an order)! Then 30 mins in started cleaning up the table to get us out of there! I wasn't even finished eating! The next table with no children were still sitting and chatting but they wanted us out! Not to mention the wait-list experience which was stressful because you don't know when you get in and they only give you 10mins! Ambient is very dull with a straight line factory style set of tables and no interesting theme or decoration. This is a highly reviewed restaurant. I had to try it. I ordered via the website and chose 4:30 for pick up. I received text and email confirmations and updates. The food was available on time. I ordered the market salad and the meatloaf. For the market salad. I ordered a small and that was a huge mistake... I should've ordered a large and I should have ordered about five of them. It is one of the best salads I've ever had. All the vegetables and the greens were so fresh and the cheese was so good. I'm usually not a cheese person but the cheese that came with the salad was just the right amount of creamy and the right amount of salty, without any of the funk. I usually eat my salad undressed, and this was wonderful undressed. I have a fascination with meatloaf. As an Asian, it's not really in our menu per se growing up so I've actually had my first meatloaf when I was an adult. Every time I see it on the menu somewhere I order it because I'm always curious how other people make their meatloaf. The meatloaf here, I have to tell you, is very fascinating. It is rich and salty, and it has pistachio which adds texture and I believe there's fig and balsamic vinegar that gives it a bit of sourness. Also, it's absolutely delightful and the serving is a very good portion. I'm saving it for breakfast before a big hike. The baked goods case is very alluring. They are located in a residential area/ industrial area and I'm sure they get busy during peak times. Very popular place hidden in the neighborhood, and always busy with take outs and dining in orders. We had the roasted chicken pizza and the lamb ragu. The pizza was good and it comes with plenty of arugula on top. The lamb ragu was tasty, but I don't think I'll order it again as it didn't have enough lamb given that it costs almost $30, my wife who had it was still hungry after her meal. Service was great and ordering and paying is all done via their website that can be accessed using the QR code each table has. There is some parking at the location and more on the street or the city lot across open to public after 6pm I believe. read more
