Came on a weekend when it was really crowded. Really excited to try this place as I've heard good things about it and love that they use fresh farm ingredients. Had a total party size of two. We even added our names, but when we got led to our seats, we were put at the barstools. There were plenty of other parties of two that arrived after us that got tables plus there were some empty tables for two that we saw as well. So we requested a table instead of the bar area, but the server told us the manager didn't want us sitting there. Didn't make much sense when there were empty tables. Maybe they had some reasoning or structure for weekend crowds they they had to follow, not sure, but we had to stay seated at the bar area. We ordered a Margherita pizza to split as well as a slice of carrot cake as I've heard a lot of good things about these items. The pizza had really fresh ingredients and the sauce and tomatoes were tasty, however the dough was incredibly salty and made it difficult to eat. This was my first time at Deru Market, but I assume it isn't always this salty and could have been a one-time thing. The slice of carrot cake was pretty expensive (around $14) but it's huge and good to split amongst 2-3 people. I liked the generous serving of nuts and shredded carrot inside. Cream cheese frosting was still a bit too sweet for me (think I prefer Deep Sea Sugar and Salt's to this) and I had to remove most of it, but the cake was overall pretty good though a little on the dry side. I get why this place is popular, but I don't think I had the best first time experience here. With the high number of positive reviews though, maybe they were just having a bad day since it was a Saturday and pretty crowded, so I'm hoping to come back again in the future, during like a seasonal special if they have any. read more

In hindsight, I'm not sure why I still tipped 20% when I didn't interact with the wait staff at all, but whatever. I started with fries and the sauce was delectable. Anytime I'm drinking vinho verde, the chances of a 5 star review go up, up, up. Thankfully, my Yelp friends didn't steer me wrong on this one. We started with the fresh garden salad with pepitas. greens, herby dressing and pickled carrots at Deru, then dove into two wood fired, blistered pizzas, the mushroom and the pepperoni. Add a bottle of vinho verde and who could complain? The ordering process was a little confusing at first, but the second visit should be easier. Pro tip: don't stand in the long line unless you're ordering to-go. Find a table, scan the QR code, and order. Fun atmosphere, friendly and helpful staff, and genuinely good food. My main complaint? One bathroom. Rough. Deru Cafe has an extensive menu that covers breakfast, lunch, and dinner, along with outstanding baked goods, pizza, and nightly dinners to go. We took my Mom to DERU Market on the Saturday before Mother's Day and it was a big hit. There was a wait but the staff gave us a realistic estimate of the wait and they take your number and text you when your table is ready. They have both great outdoor seating and inviting indoor dining as well. I started with a nice London Fog made with Earl Gray from Smith Teamaker. It comes in one size - large. My Mom got the Eggs Benedict with fresh dill which she enjoyed even though there was a slight hiccup. The English muffin under the eggs was over toasted and was very difficult to cut with a knife. But the staff was very gracious and remade the whole thing in no time. I got the roast chicken with goat cheese sandwich and my wife got the smoked turkey sandwich. Both come on bread they bake themselves. The fresh greens on both really elevated the sandwiches. DERU also has an excellent bakery case. We ordered a slice of the Coconut cake. My hubs and I took his mom to DERU Market to celebrate Mother's Day the day before (Saturday). Even though not everything went well, it was such a great experience that we will for sure come back again. I signed up for the waitlist at 11:15am before we left for the restaurant. When we got there at 11:40am, we checked in and the staffer said it would be approximately an hour to hour and a half wait on top of our already 25 minute wait. Whoa! We didn't know these were typical weekend waiting times. My MIL was willing to wait so we took off and came back in an hour. At that time, they were able to seat our party of three at a table outside. So, it took us about 90 minutes total to get seated. Note to future diners to get on the waitlist early if you're coming for weekend brunch!!! You use a QR code to order from an online menu. Liked how detailed the menu was and how we could remove or add ingredients. With my dairy and eggs intolerance, this comes in handy. My MIL ordered Eggs Benedict, I got the smoked turkey sandwich on focaccia, and my hubs got the chicken sandwich on focaccia. Our sandwiches were packed with lots of deliciousness, but my MIL's English muffin was toasted so hard she couldn't even cut through it with a steak knife. So she sent it back and she also asked for her poached eggs to be cooked harder. The staff member was apologetic and said no problem. It took a while to cook it, but when she got her remade Eggs Benedict, she really liked it. We split a slice of apple bread which was delicious. So happy it was dairy free! My hubs also enjoyed his London Fog. My MIL got a huge slice of coconut cake to go and loved eating it later, telling us it was very moist and coconutty. It was a bright day with nice weather and was a perfect time to try out DERU Market. Even though it was very busy, all of the staff were friendly and attentive. They worked like a well-oiled machine. This place tends to be busy so I'd suggest always joining the waitlist when you are about 10-15 minutes away so you can be sat quicker. It was pretty cold this day, but luckily they have blankets if you need. You can order through the QR code on the table, and the food comes pretty fast. We got the salted caramel latte, rosemary cream pizza, smoked turkey sandwich, and fries. The salted caramel latte is creamy, salty, and roasty. It comes in this massive bowl cup which is fun to drink out of haha. The rosemary cream pizza was super aromatic and savory, and the crust was fluffy. Loved the potato and bacon on it. One of my colleagues ordered a peanut butter cookie and OMG was soooo delicious (this is different than the gluten free one they've had for a while, which is also delicious) Now it took an ungodly long time to get anyone's attention to get our to go orders out, which was unacceptable when I could see the two young ladies talking behind the bar. I get the comradery but 20min of none stop, I will not look at you, got to be a bit much. After many years, I finally had the opportunity to visit DERU Market with friends for brunch on a chilly Sunday morning. DERU is known for their sandwiches, pastries, and huge cakes (at least 16' rounds) including their signature Salted Peanut Butter Cake. A friend bought me a slice of their peanut butter cake years back, and if you like chocolate and peanut butter, this is the cake for you! I was surprised that DERU is tucked away in a neighborhood and are located near some automobile repair places and not off the main Kirkland drag. They have a small parking lot and limited street parking- I get why many people opt to do takeout here instead of fight for a spot. My friends and I arrived at DERU at 9:40am, but there was already a 45-minute wait for seating indoors (note that the restaurant is super small with only a handful of tables and some coffee bar seating). However, they had outdoor seating available immediately and so we opted to brace the cold and sit outside. The waitress offered blankets, but they DO NOT have any outdoor heating lamps for the colder fall and winter months. So make sure to bring your puffer coat and gloves! TIP: While DERU does not take reservations, they do apparently have a waiting list online. Next time, I will get on the waiting list while I am driving to save time and hopefully get a table indoors next time. DERU starts serving their lunch menu at 10am, but breakfast options are available from 8am-3pm on weekends. I ordered the: - 12-OZ 1/2 CAF LATTE ($4.50) with CINNAMON GINGER SYRUP (+$0.50) and OAT MILK (+$1.50): this might have been the BEST LATTE I've had in a long time. The milk was super creamy, the espresso was smooth, and the cinnamon ginger syrup added the perfect sweetness and spice (I didn't even have to ask for half sweet!). It was steaming hot and served in a cute bowl. - SMOKED TURKEY SANDWICH COMBO WITH SALAD ($17.50): the sandwich was toasted to perfection. It came with an abundance of greens, layers of smoked turkey, thinly sliced apple, and cheese on toasted focaccia bread. The salad was fantastic too and was a pile of different greens mixed with herbs like dill which added a nice unique twist to your typical salad. It was lightly dressed in a vinaigrette and served with roasted carrots and feta or goat cheese. My total with tax and tip came out to just over $30, which is definitely on the pricey side for a sandwich and drink. They were also out of many items including hot soup (which i would've opted for instead of the salad to stay warm) and vegetarian sandwiches. Service was great and the servers are very friendly. You can order and pay through the QR code on the table or you can ask them for a paper menu and order with the server instead. Nice little spot for a casual breakfast/lunch. The wait can get pretty long, so be prepared for that. I went during lunch time and the menu was mainly pizzas and sandwiches. My partner got a pizza and I got the roasted chicken & goat cheese sandwich. The bread on the sandwich was kind of like a focaccia and was so good. The sandwich was well balanced in flavors too. The "vegetable soup" that came with it turned out to be butternut squash, which was a bit of a surprise and I was kind of disappointed as it's lower on the soup tier list for me. The pizza was good, but nothing super outstanding. We also got garlic knots for the table and those were tasty with the marinara sauce they came with. Drinks were decent. Our table got a latte, an Americano and a matcha latte. My matcha latte seemed to be lacking sweetness and the taste of honey was not there even though it said it came with it. Salads and grilled vegetables are also great with seasonal options. On our last visit I had the DERU burger for the first time which was the best burger I have had in some time. And, while the cake slices could easily feed 4 people, they are all fantastic. Service is fast and friendly. Note you aren't going to get a well paced multi course experience-but it comes out fast. The chicken pesto pizza had the softest, airiest crust I've ever had, and every dish tasted like someone in the kitchen genuinely cared about getting it right. The ordering is easy and someone confirms the accuracy of what you place through the we code, so it's dine in but not full waiter service, but it works; they've got it down to a T. We enjoyed breakfast and dinner and both visits weee my favorite meals on Kirkland. My friend ordered a shredded pork sandwich with delicious looking focaccia bread and I ordered eggs benedict that came with scrumptious fingerling potatoes. Everything we ate for brunch was amazing. After we sat down, things got very busy and we did have to remind our server that we had ordered cake slices to go. He was incredibly kind, however, and brought the desserts asap. We tried the dark chocolate cake later in the day. The frosting was very good and chocolatey, but the cake had some dry chunks scattered within the sponge. I ordered the peanut butter cake for another friend and she also found the dry bits in her cake. We got the chocolate, coconut, and seasonal pumpkin cakes. These slices are absolutely MASSIVE so keep that in mind when you order. They are all absolutely divine though - the cake is so moist yet dense and rich, and the cream complements it very well. I absolutely loved all of them, and they were all good in their own ways. So, highly recommend planning before your visit. They do have a waitlist, if that helps. The lady who helped us was extremely sweet. She was just too kind throughout. And coming to the food, we had the mushroom pizza, the garlic knots, sweet potato fries and a coffee cake. Everything was so fresh and tasted absolutely delicious. It is a very popular spot and even at 2pm on a weekday, there was a bit of a wait for a group of 7. By the time we finished our meal, there were many tables open. I love their Roasted Mushroom Pizza, with fresh mozzarella, goat cheese, roasted local organic mushrooms, kale, roasted garlic, olive oil and crushed red chilies--although I prefer it without the garlic. In addition to the pizza, I also tasted the Tomato Basil Soup and Kale + Sweet Potato Salad this time, which were just as flavorful. They don't have a huge menu, but they use very fresh locally sourced ingredients, which are absolutely delicious. Looking forward to dining again next time I'm in the area. read more

Really enjoyed my meal tonight at Deru! Their meatloaf with fig and pistachio was actually delicious. Enjoyed it with the arugula side salad. The garlic knots were to die for!!! Fresh, steaming, airy with a slight crisp when biting down, complimented well with their marinara sauce. The salted peanut butter cake reminded me of that one scene in Matilda with the chocolate cake. Really liked the peanut butter frosting with the moist dark chocolate cake! LOVE Deru. Food and service are always high quality, though I was hoping for more from their salted caramel and chocolate cake. I agree with other reviewers that they need to work on that recipe. Everything else is fantastic however. My favorite things are the chicken goat cheese sandwich, the fries chicken and gravy, and their salted caramel latte never fails. DERU is often touted as one of the must try restaurants in the Seattle area and I finally managed to get out there for a weeknight dinner. You are able to join the waitlist online, which I'd definitely recommend on the weekend, but at least on Thursdays, plenty of seating even if you're walking in. Overall, the ingredients were really nice, but I was just a little disappointed with the experience after hearing all the hype. Meat Lover's Pizza (3.5/5): The toppings were nicely balanced with some jalapeños and onions to break up the salty meats, but my real problem with this was the crust was too soft. I want my pizza to be able to hold up under the sauce and this just completely drooped when you picked up a slice. Flavor good, textures sad :(. Carbonara (4.25/5): Super creamy carbonara. Nothing mind blowing, but delicious nonetheless and great al dente pasta. Exactly what you want and meets expectations exactly. DERU Chocolate Cake (2.75/5): This just isn't really my style of chocolate cake. Ate fairly moist for a cake of that thickness, but it's really dense and the buttercream was too sweet and solid in texture for me (I'm more of a chantilly gal). Had a great experience last year so I wanted to bring my sister here for lunch but it wasn't as pleasant this year. We knew the wait would be long, but didn't mind since the place is known for great food and cake. The server delivering our fried chicken sandwiches was quite rude, saying "is that it?" In a rude tone, without any greeting or smile, while also forgetting the fries. Another person at the bar refilled our water glasses from the faucet without a word or any eye contact or simple acknowledgment of us sitting there apart from the empty glasses. I'm not sure why they were so rude to us, but it really took away from our lunch experience. As for the food, the fried chicken was dry, a bit overcooked and quite small for the price. It also does not come with fries so those need to be ordered on the side. I will say the best part was the carrot cake, but at this point, we were in a rush to leave after the disappointing experience. Overall, I would not come back for sit down dining since the service was poor, but may come back for cake to take home. read more
