So disappointed, I ordered the marinated flank steak and it was the worst piece of meat I've had in a while. It was flavorless and chewy and for an entree that was almost 30 it came with a huge order of fries sprinkled with cheese. Service was terrible, well our server was. The one that was in the section next to us was pleasant and attentive. Ours was aloof and barely checked on us. I needed a refill on my water and she never came. We keep trying in hopes it gets better, but unfortunately just not one of our "go to" favorites we'd like it to be. Group of 4 were there on a Saturday early evening (4pm) before it was busy, drinks & apps are always good but that's usually where it stops. Service was slow, took a table an hour to get our actual dinner. One of us ordered Wiccan Chicken and requested the dijon sage cream be put on the side, sauce was not on the side when it arrived to table. Another one of us ordered their buffalo risotta (special of the day) which was cold, great flavor but would have been much more enjoyable if it was a warmer temperature. The server finally realized once she noticed the chicken was not being touched that it had not come out the way it was requested and offered to make a new plate, however we were in route to another engagement that we needed to be at by 6pm so because it had already taken so long for our order we did not have the extra time to spare to wait for it to be redone. Outside dining during Covid-19 phase 3 today. I had a ribeye at Sovereign a while back. It was one of the best I've had at a restaurant. So when I saw it on the menu I knew what to order. The fact that it came with 2 starches made me giggle...but when I tasted them I know it was a good choice. The mac-n-cheese was made with perfectly al dente orecchiette pasta ( little ears) and a fantastic sauce with a touch of very lightly truffled breadcrumbs. The potato salad was "cooled" and very tasty as well. The ribeye was cooked perfectly. I will be hunting down this locally sourced farm to buy some beef for sure. Hubs got the Wiccan Chicken because there wasn't a fried chicken sandwich on the menu. But it was very good as usual. We didn't get the Brussels sprouts...it killed us...but I still cannot pay $14 for those. I also got a tap sour. I should have asked the price...It was good, but not $10 for 10 oz good. read more

June 11th marked the grand reopening of Illinois as part of the Restore Illinois Plan, and as I was browsing the options available to mark the occasion, I remembered dining at this unique restaurant that calls Plainfield its home, one year ago and before the menu refresh that ownership undertook. I was impressed at that time and was looking for an opportunity to see what has changed. Never one to back away from a new experience, I decided today was the day to re-visit this venerable village staple with open mind and eager heart - would this classic eatery and bar impress me all over again? Short answer - yes. The adventure began with a stellar start. Our server, Ana, was more than attentive; she provided valuable recommendations throughout the evening, and I credit the success of this establishment to employing people of her ilk on staff. My first decision was what flavor to go with for the ginger beer accent in my vodka mule; I asked for a recommendation, and was told the Black Currant was a solid flavor. When I received my drink and took my first tentative sip, I immediately noticed the darker, fuller taste that lingered for several seconds. This delightful aftertaste grew stronger with each sip, peaking about ten sips in, and helped accent the already perfectly balanced flavor profile. This was the best mule I have ever had. Moving on to the appetizer, or 'small plate' as they are called here, I wanted to try the chicken wings; they were much lauded online and some close friends urged me to give them a shot. I was not disappointed. To get a better sense of the flavors, I ordered 8 wings with 4 of each available sauce and a side of ranch. A great set of wings tastes great without any side sauce, and these certainly fit that bill, although no one should say no to ranch. (it's a thing) This small plate earns further high praise for its unique bleu cheese slaw garnish, and since I hate bleu cheese (the only food I truly despise) I was pleasantly shocked to find it appealing and more than edible. It takes a monumental effort to make that happen, so this earns bonus marks. Finally, the highlight of the evening - dinner was served. I asked Ana her thoughts on three available sandwich options, and she walked me through each option with a professional description and personal anecdote of what she tried, when, and why she liked it. The mojo chicken sandwich was her pick, and seeing as the mule was already a huge win, I saw no reason to challenge her. When I received the sandwich, I noticed the plate was arranged in a balanced manner: the ratio of sandwich to side (fries in this case) was exactly the way it should be. The grilled chicken was cooked just right, juicy like disco in the 70's and more tender than Elvis' love. Pickled vegetables accompanied the meat along with a garlic aioli sauce, and these too were delectable. This is an excellent sandwich. Not to be outshone, the fries are thin-cut and seasoned just right. Even the green beans that one of my table partners got were juicy and fresh. Sides are an important part of a meal, and Sovereign succeeds brilliantly in making them a true complement to the main course. A rousing effort all around was made here. All in all, I cannot understate the positives of visiting this Plainfield staple. The staff, overworked as most places are in the post-pandemic world, performed brilliantly and I want to thank them for their efforts and service. Sovereign exceeded my already lofty expectations while planting the seeds in my mind for what I should experiment with on my next visit; due to this experience, that visit will come much sooner than the last. read more

The wine I had by the glass was good, a rosé that I liked... featured on their indoor billboard. I had an appetizer I split with my dining companion and it was utterly forgettable, so much so I can't even remember what it was!! My entree came highly recommended by loyal patrons, the pork shank... not on the menu but generally available any night. I don't know what to say... in spots it was dry and stringy and overcooked. The accompanying kale was practically raw and super chewey... not an impressive dish. My dining companion ordered a medium rare steak that came to the table mooing so that got sent back. When her steak reappeared it was med rare but an entirely different cut of chewey beef...not good! After dinner we moved to the bar to discover that they had NO COGNAC! WTF?? I've been wanting to give Sovereign a try for quite a while now, but I don't often find myself in downtown Plainfield. I ended up having an errand to run in the area though, so I set up a work lunch here. This restaurant is farm to table and they have a scratch kitchen that they are very proud of. The staff here is very educated on the biz and what they have to offer and it's evident that there is great communication between the kitchen and front of house. The restaurant kind of looks like a house from the outside. We sat at a high top table in the bar area. There were a couple small TVs up at the bar and it was actually a happening place for lunch on a Tuesday. From the photos it looks like they have a beautiful patio, so we'll have to sit outside sometime. Our server told us about the specials which included a sandwich not on the menu, and then the rotating tacos and risotto options. Everything sounded delicious and it was hard to choose from such an inventive menu! I ended up getting the risotto which changes frequently. Today it had butternut squash and pork belly which was absolutely delicious. It's perfect to share of if you're really hungry this could be a meal on it's own. I ended up sharing it and also got a small pig & pear salad which is made up of mixed greens, candied pears, fried prosciutto, feta, and blueberry vinaigrette. I thought the salad was very flavorful and unique. I've never had fried prosciutto before! My only complaint was that I wish it came in a bigger bowl, because it was hard kind of hard to eat without the salad falling out. Sovereign is such a gem in downtown Plainfield and I will for sure be back again! I have went to Sovereign about 2x now and while the drinks are amazing and seasonal using fresh flavors (please try the Palomas) the pork belly taco is one thing I could eat a million of! The other entree that stuck out to me was the Wiccan Chicken. The gift and the curse of this restaurant is the farm to table aspect. While I can appreciate sourcing local and fresh ingredients, it does mean that sometimes you aren't able to enjoy your favorite dishes depending on season and what's available. If you had told me I'd have a Bloody Mary that would change my life, I would have thought you were crazy. Then I tried the Cheesapalooza bloody (weekend special, they don't always have it) after asking my server what he suggested. I both loved and hated him based on this. The bloody, by itself, is spectacular. Spicy, savory, full of flavor. Then we have to talk about the caloric monstrosity that is the rest of the Cheesapalooza bloody - perfectly cut fries coated in a pork gravy, sliced jalapeño and onion on top with queso fresco and FRIED QUESO FRESCO a la cheese curds. I want this place to be great, but nothing hits the mark. Except their beer and wine offerings, which have always been exceptional. We have had the brussel sprout appetizer each time. We love brussel sprouts, but these are deep fried, and many of the sprouts are 2-3 inches long, it is a task to eat an entire dinner plate of them. I got the fish and chips, I admit I did not look at all the details on the menu, but I don't expect "chips" on a fish and chips dish to be potato chips. These were nothing special, which made it even more disappointing. My GF got the salmon and ate half, she thought it was over cooked and dry. She prefers well- done meat, so if this was too done for her, it was way over done. Service was good and this is such an amazing space. The beef cheek bruschetta was fantastic, the taco special was disappointing. It was listed under "small plates" however two small tacos in a bowl was not what I was expecting. Highlights were the Wiccan chicken which was fried chicken with mashed potatoes and green beans. Beans tasted like they had browned butter. Fried Brussels sprouts small plate was huge and tasty. Tacos of the day were pulled pork tasty but small. For the bros potatoes had pulled pork and were spicy. Two items were just ok--lobster roll and chicken sandwich.
