The souvlaki lady sauce was almost like a Russian dressing, it was super filling, and the pita was soft. I originally had asked for fries in it but she was having issues with getting the fryer on; because of that, she loaded up my sandwich even more than usual and apologized for it. I've been meaning to visit the Souvlaki Lady for years, but never found the time as she is all the way up in Astoria, just a block away from the Astoria-Ditmars (N) station. As luck would have it, I finally made time to embark on the trek, and I was so blown away by how delicious her souvlaki was that I opted to return a few days later, just in time for her Monday soup special, avgolemeno ($4 for small). It was spectacular-- bright and zesty with some chicken and rice thrown in for a fantastic cure for the Monday blues. A lot of the customers waiting in line seem to be regulars, but if you are a beginner like I am, I would definitely recommend the Souvlaki Lady ($9) with your choice of pork or chicken. Both are great options, all juicy and well-marinated and grilled to perfection. However, the Souvlaki Lady sauce is non-negotiable-- it's sweet, tangy, creamy, with a hint of spice that really pulls everything together. The souvlaki comes wrapped in a grilled pita, along with lettuce, tomatoes, and the sweetest sliced onions. Cute little food truck in a very busy area, and with so many options around I'm glad I chose to stop here. There's no seating (as expected with a truck), but the food makes up for it. The ladies running it are super nice, and even though there's usually a small line, it moves quickly. They're clearly popular -- while I was waiting, I noticed a lot of Greek people coming by, which is always a great sign of authenticity. Really good and affordable food. With the pita, we can choose either pork or chicken for the protein. We go with pork, and the meat is well-seasoned and is not dry. The souvlaki sauce is very tasty. I stopped by here the other day. I ordered Pork Souvlaki platter. This stand is definitely now one of my favorite Pork Souvlakis in New York. It was tender, juicy, had very good seasoning. You could taste the Greek Oregano on the Souvlaki and homemade Tzaziki sauce. The Tzaziki sauce had a good creamy texture from the Greek Yogurt, she added good seasoning in it also. The lady that runs the cart is Incredibly nice and friendly. I really love supporting small businesses like hers. It's the people that put their livelyhood on the line in order to follow their dreams of a better life which makes New York one of the best places. read more

Look, I applaud folks for being entrepreneurs. It seems Souvlaki Lady offers a great product, at a good price, hence her popularity. And I love NYC's 'food carts'. However. There is just no way she cannot be aware of the street congestion in the immediate area (right by the corner of a busy intersection), and which many of her own customers create. I have observed many a driver pull up, idle over the Crosswalk... idle in a lane of traffic...park in an illegal spot...and then get out and wait in line for some souvlaki. And when cars DO idle/park over a crosswalk, it's typically because they couldn't pull up any further, because there was a car in front of them. These drivers then must BACK OUT, even further BEYOND the crosswalk, greatly endangering pedestrians whom they gave NO CHOICE but to walk out into traffic, because the particular driver completely blocked the crosswalk. We all know that many NYC drivers are extremely entitled and will park/idle wherever they damn please. But maybe Souvlaki Lady should consider moving a bit more up the block... away from the corner? This way, there wouldn't be so many vehicles idling right by a CORNER, and impeding other vehicles from turning onto 33rd Street. That particular corner is typically complete chaos, between the essential delivery trucks (businesses Have to be able to get their deliveries), and the non-essential, driving customers of Souvlaki Lady (not to mention Lefkos, another business, directly across the street, whose customers are well-known, for parking/idling illegally). It is utterly perverted, to think that so many NYC drivers think nothing of creating congestion and dangerous street conditions, all to get some food from a food truck? read more

I was starving on my way to the hair salon in Astoria. I look around and there are just too many food options. I can't make up my mind and decide to go in my car and go on Yelp. Checked out the reviews and it was a sign from the universe. When you have so many restaurants around and you just can't make up your mind, just get food from a food stand/truck! No lines, no wait and yummy food. I ordered two hot dogs from here and they were so good and so cheap. My sister got the chicken on a stick with just lemons and salt and the chicken was perfect! I've walked past this not so hidden gem at least a couple of hundred times and I always told myself I would stop by. Well today was the day. Cold, tired, hungover and hungry I was out doing some errands and really wasn't in any mood to cook. I walked up and wasted zero time in choosing what I would eventually call an impressive display of gluttony.. Pork platter with rice and hot sauce, sure there was the pork or chicken on a stick with bread, but nope I was waaaaaay too hungry for a quick snack, this having been my first time I knew exactly what to get and was I glad I did. Food was donated from this restaurant through an organization called 9hugs to department in the hospital I work at. The food was absolutely delicious! I had the lamb with rice and they gave salad on the side which was very tasty. The lamb was flavorful and cooked really well and the rice pretty much melts in your mouth, great combination. I usually love all my food drenched in sauce but this food was amazing even without, which is extremely rare. I cannot wait to visit this place on my own and try other things on the menu. read more

Came by for Saturday lunch. Ordered both the chicken platter($6.00) and the pork platter ($6.00). Each one comes with a pita, rice, a single meat kebab, and a small salad topped with tzatziki sauce and what seemed to be some kind of lemon-vinegar mixture. Opening up the platter, I wished there was a bit more meat. There was a lot of rice and a decent amount of salad but just not enough meat. If only they'd offer an extra skewer for a dollar or two more or something! The salad was really good and I love the tzatziki which was just creamy enough. I grew up in queens and i've had my share of vendor cart food... but peeps come from all around for this Lady's meats.... She's located on 33rd street right of Ditmars Blvd in Astoria. She's there during the day time and you'll know cause there's usually a crowd. i enjoy both the beef and chicken. I usually end up going for the chicken. The souvlaki is.... wait for it.... "Legendaryyyyyy" It's almost like an art form the way she smoothly dips the meat in what i guess is some kinda of butter sauce... Slaps that chicken on a nice warm pita and tops it off with some lettuce, tomatoes, (hold the onions for me) and of course white sauce... oh don't forget the hot sauce.... it cost I think $4bucks or less and it is one of the best quickie meals you'll ever have. First time i had it... I drove off eating one and made a u turn and got another... Since I don't live in the hood. I will now get one and eat it right away and another to go so I can pop it in the microwave or toaster oven later... And yes .. still almost as good.... On those days that i'm trying to slim down and avoid carbs... I'll go get 2 -3 skewers of the chicken.. Again dipped in the butter like sauce and sprinkled with salt and pepper...
