I've been to this hamburger joint about a handful of times in the last 2 months. I love that it's a local joint. It gives old school diner vibes and even has a table filled with early 1950s photos of Bellaire! I've seen the same manager or maybe she's the owner there each time and she's very friendly. She always asks us how the is. I appreciate that they offer vegan and vegetarian options with the impossible burger and black bean burgers as substitutes for meat patties. I've been on the hunt for an old school classic burger with a vegetarian patty for years! Plus they have seasoned curly fries!!! I also haven't had these in ages!!! Makes me feel like a kid again! lol. The only downside is that the burgers can get a little pricey, the serving of fries is minimal for the cost and their super cool beer wall gets costly really fast as they charge you per ounce! Your customer is your bread and butter so be careful how you talk to them you never know who they are are what they do because word of mouth advertising travels fast and your business has gone down hill fast. Was craving a burger and came here for old times sake (it's across from my old high school!). It hasn't changed much over the years besides the price increasing bit by bit like everything else nowadays. Service was really quick as there was only one other customer on a rainy weekday afternoon before school let out. I ordered a Swiss cheeseburger on wheat bread with everything and waffle fries. I forgot they include mustard and I don't prefer it, but other than that, the burger was solid. I do wish the bread had been toasted and more buttery, but maybe it would have if I did not order wheat bread. This location has been here for 18 years! That's impressive in this ever so changing world we live in now. The burgers are old fashion style with perfectly toasted buns and made to order. The onion rings are medium thickness. Service was great and the items were delivered to the table fairly quickly with a smile. The prices are really good too. They play great music (Elvis was on!) from the simpler era. I love the black and white picture hanging on the walls. The neon sign also gives it that 50's diner look. There are plenty of seating options inside as well as a patio with umbrella cover. Parking is easy and right outside of the restaurant. They need to update the booths. Many have tears in the seat portion and that gives a bad look. I'm surprised no one has repaired them to keep the place looking as nice as possible. read more

Was in town on business and was told to try this place out. It's a mom and pop burger joint (with 4 locations around Houston) and is no frills, old fashioned style. I got the basic double cheeseburger with fresh cut fries. Double Cheeseburger 7/10 - the meat is under seasoned for me, but everything else was great. From the large pickle slices and fresh bread, it made for a great burger. I personally just added some S&P and was content. Fresh Cut Fries 8/10 - I liked these because they were almost crispy and definitely fresh, had cut potatoes. Service 7/10 - it's a counter order style joint, and they just bring the food out. Pretty much self serve. The staff was friendly though overall. Atmosphere 7/10 - again, it's a no frills and basic old school style burger joint. Overall 8/10 - I definitely recommend to give them a chance if in the area. Barbi has been to a couple of them with me and she agrees, they have excellent burgers and really great chicken sandwiches. They're not cheap but they're not expensive, and service is usually great at all the different locations, including this one. Yes, their products can be a little dry and a little plain, but easily 5 stars and way better than any of the chains. I love all the locations, and this one is one of my faves. It feels like the original, even though I think the original doesn't exist. This is because they've done an old-time style decor with all the neon trimmings of a diner and cute sentimental pictures of the olden tymes of the place. I guess I should have realized by how shiny and new and large this place is (and along the fancy I-10 corridor), that it's not the original. But the service and products are great. Barbi and I had kind of a bad time when we came to this one together, but we'll make up for it next time. Also the servers here are super cute and one of them is super flirty with me and I always appreciate that. There are 4 locations, and I've been to 3 so far. There might be more I don't know about. Southwells definitely have some of the best sandwiches in town and we always appreciate every single bite. Service here was not too bad, although I prefer the other locations for that. A glamorized #whopper at best. That was my assessment of Southwell's hamburger Grill. I have never heard of this chain before and I opted for a regular hamburger with seasoned fries. The burger was just OK, it came with its fixings and the Patty was smaller in proportion with the buns. The burger definitely needed condiments such as lots and lots of mayo and the buns should have been grilled or have some butter in them. The French fries were ok too. Seasoned version and smaller in quantity. I did like the waffle look of the fries as I've only had them at Chick-fil-A before. Overall 2.5 out of five but I skewed it up to three stars. As mentioned before, it's just like your everyday whopper but with a little bit more use of cosmetics. One time visit for me only. This is a closed chapter. read more

I usually get the cheddar cheeseburger with grilled onions but I've also tried Cathy's favorite salad. I was pleasantly surprised by how delicious it is; the balsamic vinaigrette is legit! Sometimes, you just need a simple pleasure like a cheeseburger and fries. No frills - just a well executed burger. This, to me, is where Southwell's shines. Sure, they have options for you to take your burger experience to the next level, but their base burgers are so well executed that it is almost a shame to add on more toppings that would distract from the perfectly cooked, juicy patty. Sides are served a la carte, and the portions are big enough for sharing. We came during lunch on a weekday and there was a fairly long line to order, but once you placed your order, the food came surprisingly quickly for something you know is made to order. For those days my almost 90 yr old mother has a hankerin' for a burger I head on over for her personal favorite the Old Fashioned burger which is topped with mayo, mustard, tomato slices, lettuce, onions & pickles. Plain Jane but bursting with flavor. On days I don't feel like eating beef, I opt for Larry's Special which is grilled chicken breast topped with mustard, lettuce, onion, tomatoes & jalapenos. I love this place for a quick lunch and have always loved coming here. The burgers are simple and always have that homemade taste. These burger joints are small and quaint yet leave you wondering "what the heck am I going to get?" while looking at the relatively extensive burger/sandwich/salad list. I got the supreme chicken sandwich (with the thousand island dressing on the side) and a side of waffle fries. It was super tasty and hit the spot immediately. The serving side is just enough for a lunch size portion, as well. You will leave full and happy. What made the supreme chicken sandwich for me was the bacon, cheese and dressing that is added to it... great flavor combinations for a grilled chicken sandwich. Asking for my thousand island dressing on the side gives you an ample amount of dressing. My boyfriend - who visited here last week - said that when he got it as is on the sandwich, didn't think there was really enough to do it good justice. (Tip- maybe ask for the 1,000 island dressing on the side then slather it on.) For the handsome and I, the total was a little over $23. I don't know why I gave this place a 2nd chance. The ambiance is pleasant and the blues music is a nice addition. The food is good; burgers are tasty, shakes are great, but the staff makes one feel like an intruder, they ask things like "regular fries?" without elaborating on the options. I know there is a menu board, but I almost sprained my neck trying to read that too highly hung board. There's more, they don't give you a lid for your drink unless you ask for one.
