The owner was working the window- he's a friendly and energetic guy. We ordered the five thighs, the two Sando combo with curly fries, two tacos, garlic noodles, and Brussels, fried and sautéed. Yes, we ordered a lot. Took a bit for the food to come out but was to be expected when you're ordering freshly fried foods. The food was piping hot when it came out. All the chicken was fried really crispy. The sandwiches were served on brioche and were really good. Actually, everything was good. Yesterday there was an article in the Chronicle about the best chicken wings in the Bay Area and Southside Station was on the list. I am a fan of chicken wings, so after I picked up my order at Three Stone Hearth today I drove up to Southside Station. Though there was no one at the window, there was a bell to ring and a sign asking that it be rung. When I did, a nice young woman came out from the back to take my order. I ordered a combo plate to go, w/ wings, garlic noodles and a drink. The drink choices were a variety of sodas and water. Since I don't drink sodas I opted for water. Each order is cooked to order, so the wait was 10 or 15 minutes. I was given a little gizmo to alert me when my food was ready and invited to take a seat while I waited. It made noise and I wasn't sure how to turn it off, but the young woman did. The space is clean and neat. Overhead are colorful paper lanterns w/ light bulbs inside. Very pretty. I know they have a public restroom because one of the men who was waiting for his order asked to use it. In addition to the two men eating in, there was a steady stream of people doing takeout. I had the wings and garlic noodles for dinner tonight, along w/ my favorite Three Stone Hearth fattoush salad, which I had picked up this afternoon. I warmed up the noodles in the microwave and the wings in the oven and that worked well. Portions were generous and the food was flavorful. The wings were meaty and well seasoned. They included a small container of sauce, but after trying it on one bite, I didn't think it was necessary. I'm basically not a sauce person. The noodles were nicely garlicky. Monday February 19, 6pm Relatively empty, small sit in restaurant, no visible bathroom, and no free drinks. Got the sandwich set for 2 people: 2 fried chicken sandwiches, Brussel sprouts, curly fries, and 8oz lychee sangria. They didn't have brussel sprouts so they allowed us to substitute with garlic noodles. Chicken sandwich was fresh, waited a good 15 mins or so, I wish there were veggies in the burger. I think a cucumber would also go well with it. an 8oz sangria doesn't quench your thirst, so you could buy more drinks or bring your own water bottle to wash down all these delicious carbs. They have quite a few other food options on the menu, but this yelp is solely based on the chicken sandwich and fries. Chicken Sandwich: starting with the bread, Southside Station uses a pillowly toasted bun that is the perfect texture to bite into on the way through to the cross section of the sandwich. The slightly spicy sauce along with the Banh Mi style vegetables (i.e. daikon, etc) compliment the generous fried chicken thighs. The sandwich holds together well without any tectonic shifting of ingredients with each bite. Fries: a large portion of crispy, good fries. Hard to get more descriptive than that the fries are just good. The ordering is interesting. Ring a bell, order through a window, and take a seat inside or outside while waiting for the order. In a world where chicken sandwiches have become the new craze (especially of the Nashville variety), it's hard to find an especially unique chicken sandwich. But, Southside Station is the answer! I've had the pleasure of trying their famous fried chicken sandwich, and my friend ordered their combo which comes with a drink and a hefty amount of fries. The made-to-order sandwich is pretty massive and demands the respect of both hands. It also features two crispy thighs on a bed of pickled daikon and carrot slaw (reminiscent of your classic Vietnamese banh mi). The brioche bun was also incredibly buttery, mildly sweet, and a perfect vessel to house the juicy chicken inside. This is one of the best fried chicken sandwiches I've had in the Bay Area so far. The flavor is amazingly balanced with the pickled papaya salad and the creamy sriracha for an additional sweet, sour, and spicy kick. I wish I could like this place more. Unfortunately some big hiccups. I ordered one chicken sandwich. It took 27 minutes for my order to be ready. I knew this because I had a timer going because I was on metered parking. There was only one person ahead of me, otherwise the restaurant was empty (more people came after me). Luckily I wasn't in a rush, otherwise if I was here on my lunch break...I would have to cancel the order and go back to work hungry. The sandwich itself was ok. The chicken was good, it was chicken thigh which is more juicy (but 1/3 the price of chicken breast). After tax it was $17. Other reviews raved about how huge it was...it seemed pretty standard to me. Yea, its huge compared to chic fil a, which costs $7, otherwise its just normal size. The slaw and the spicy sauce was good. However, they burned my bun. From the photos, you can see they picked apart the top of my bun to remove some of the burned bits, but now I have a bun thats been picked over. The bottom bun was a little burned too. It didn't look like much, but it made the whole sandwich taste burnt. I feel like they need more staff? It seemed like it was one guy, working hard to cook the food and take all the orders. They recently catered a party I went to. We had the Chicken Sliders, tasty wings and Garlic Noodles. Wow. If you aren't here, you're missing out. I am NOT a "wings" person. I hardly ever try them because they tend to be way too greasy and don't have much flavor or meat on them. Yea, Southside Station NAILS IT. I've been converted. Featuring brioche buns, house made papaya pickles, and flavorful and tender fried chicken thigh; you can tell a lot of care went into this sandwich! I especially loved the papaya pickles which reminded me a lot of the carrot/daikon pickles you would find with Vietnamese cuisine but with slight papaya flavor and chew. It's a tangy lemon/lime spicy crispy tofu. Delish but I would probably not get again only because I actually can't handle the heat. However, let it be known that I still finished this because I loved the crisp (but just had many glasses of water on the side) 2. Combo Crispy Fried Chicken Thighs - THIS. IS. IT. FAM. OH MY GOODNESS. You rarely find a place that actually gives you a combo meal where you feel like you actually got bang for buck in a combo meal but this place really does. I see only an upside to ordering food at Southside Station. Located along the busy thoroughfare of Shattuck Avenue near Downtown Berkeley, Southside Station opened a couple years ago replacing the longstanding Frausto's Mexican Restaurant. To open a new business during challenging times that we are all in right now takes a lot of courage, and all of the credit must go to owner Louie Chaivisut for combining Asian fusion cuisine with traditional comfort food. Despite their newfound establishment, this fast casual restaurant has already managed to make a number of top ten lists for their jumbo-sized chicken wings, which makes them the perfect place any college student or sports lover to get their wing fix satiated. I have been intrigued with their menu after walking by many a time, but never found the time to get their for a lunchtime meal, until a recent sunny afternoon that I managed to catch them when they were not busy, and I was parked nearby so I knew now it was my chance to order their fried chicken wings. Upon entry to Southside Station, one will notice that it is really spare, but they do have plenty of seating both indoors and patio table seating in front of their restaurant, and a television showing sports so people have something to do as they wait for their order or to enjoy as they eat. The menu at Southside Kitchen is broken up into sections including Pizza, which is only available if you pre-order them, Combo meals, Main meals, Set menus for large parties, Sides, Kid's Menu and Boba. So their menu definitely has a little bit of everything for everyone. Since I have read so much about their chicken, I knew what I wanted to order, but I just was curious about what my better option would be their Crispy Fried Chicken Thighs or their Spicy Thai Fried Chicken Wings. Both options were offered as Combo meals in which they are served with a side of Fries or Garlic Noodles. When I asked their associate who was taking my order which option he would choose, he told me that their chicken wings were a signature menu item, so I was sold. I opted to order that as a Combo meal with their Garlic Noodles and with that I got to order a drink of which they offer by can, so I opted for a Coke. This Combo meal cost 16 dollars total. To pair with my meal since I was bringing it home, and planned to enjoy this meal for more than one meal, I also opted to order their Curly Fries, which were 4 dollars. My total bill was 22.36 before I added in gratuity as they also charge an extra 10 cents for your takeout paper bag. After sitting there for a brief time waiting for my meal to be freshly made, the transponder they hand you once you order will buzz once it is finished. Upon my drive home which took about twenty minutes, my chicken was still warm and my fries were still crispy, which meant a lot as there was no need to be reheated. The Curly Fries were more in line with what one would order at Jack in the Box, and the Garlic Noodles were decent but not necessarily outstanding, but the real star was in fact their Spicy Chicken Wings. You can tell Chef Chaivisut took pride in his heritage in creating these wonderfully crispy meaty chicken wings, which ironically are not too spicy at all and perfect for any palate, especially when dipped in the tangy spicy sauce that was added to my meal. With reasonable price points for other items on their menu, I can see why Southside Kitchen has become a hit with the college-aged clientele that this area of Berkeley has become so well-known for. I cannot wait to return to try their Chicken Thighs, as I overheard another table who received their order before I did, marveling at the size and the amount of food when they ordered that meal. This and their Fried Chicken Sandwich, and their Special Pizza flavors including their Thai Ground Pork Basil and Chicken Satay will have me intrigued upon a future visit. And with the success that Southside Kitchen is currently enjoying, many more visits are definitely in order for me! I got to try Southside Station when I was lucky to get into a Yelp Elite event. Fusion food is usually a hit or miss for me and this place is a hit. Their most popular item here is their fried chicken sandwich. The brioche bun was soft and fluffy. Their chicken was crispy on the outside, and moist and juicy on the inside. This was paired with their creamy orange sauce (spicy mayo) and pickled papaya slaw, made for the perfect combo. Very flavorful. I didn't think it was spicy enough and would have requested a spicier version, if only there were different spicy levels. The Brussels sprouts were good. They were sautéed with garlic oil. We were just walking around Berkeley after visiting fourth street market on Saturday. It was around lunch time and we were getting hungry, so my partner looked it up on yelp for food around the area. He came up with this Korean fried chicken place that he found on yelp, and the reviews were really high so we decided to come here. For fried chicken lovers, we found this place interesting because it seemed like they don't have many options for the food, but when you reread the menu, they actually have so many things going on. We ordered a chicken thighs combo that comes with garlic noodles (options) and drink, and fried chicken wings. They both came with different flavors, but I would like the thighs more if the meat was actually thighs meat instead of breasts. But they were decent. I LOVE THE GARLIC NOODLES THO! I always enjoy a good portion of garlic noodles everywhere, and there's no exception with this place as well. We came in around 1PM, and it was empty. 15 minutes sitting down, it was suddenly booming. All the tables and chairs were filled. The things that could be improved: 1. The Wait Time: Took about 30 min from the time of ordering at the counter. I know this because that's how long I paid for extremely nearby street parking and I only had less than a minute left on the meter. 2. I was lucky enough to get into the Yelp elite event last year and got to try their fried chicken sandwich, garlic noodles and Thai fried chicken wings. The food was amazing!! My favorite was the garlic noodles and Thai fried chicken wings. It was so flavorful. The wings were crispy and the sauce that came with it paired great with it. It had a nice heat and tanginess to it. The fried chicken sandwich was also really good! I had everything set for pickup at 6pm but I didn't get my food til 30 mins later due to the line at the event so my sandwich wasn't as crispy as I would've liked but it's understandable. WHEN: Tuesday @11:30am PARKING: I lucked out with a spot right in front. It was $4/hour. I love how they have a cute area setup to dine outdoors. There's 2 tables right outside their shop, and about 3 tables and a bench across the way. Since I was there early for lunch, there was no one around. Here's what I had ordered: THAI FRIED CHICKEN WINGS - $9 5 wings, flavorful Thai spice wing served with creamy Sriracha sauce. I wish they had labeled on the ordering site that this item was spicy (without the sauce). But it wasn't terrible. The flavors are savory and tangy--I taste a lot of the lime/lemon. It definitely has that nice thin layer of crispy skin. I honestly didn't care for it myself because it's not my palette of preference, but I'm sure lots of people would enjoy the wings. Just give it a try! SAUTEED ORGANIC BRUSSEL SROUTS - $9 Sauteed organic brussel sprouts with garlic oil salt pepper and honey glazed. COMBO FRIED CHICKEN SANDWICH - $16 + Fried Chicken Sandwich + Curly Fries + Soda This combo is a $19 value, so it's a great deal! And if you don't want a soda, you can upgrade to any beverage for $1 it's menu price. I got Thai Ice Tea for an additional $3. CURLY FRIES ($4) - Your standard seasoned curly fries tastes exactly how you'd expect it! No complaints here! It's a generous amount so its shareable. THAI TEA ($4) - It's already pre-mixed so don't expect a 2-color drink. It's sweet and definitely is Thai Tea. I appreciate that it comes in a carry bag for my to easily take-away my drink. Southside Station created a welcoming atmosphere, that transports their guests to a summer night abroad. Colorful lanterns hung overhead a cozy outdoor seating area with ample spaces in between each table. It's situated at a busy corner in Berkeley (Shattuck x Dwight), but they've turned the space into a safe haven with plants and props, for visitors to chill and enjoy a delicious meal. There's plenty of street parking around. Now to the food! I tried their: - Signature Thai Fried Chicken Sandwich (Fried Chicken thigh marinated with Thai seasoning nestled on a homemade Brioche bun, Sriracha Mayo and topped with homemade pickled papaya) - Sautéed Organic Brussel Sprouts (Sautéed organic brussel sprouts with garlic oil, salt, pepper and honey glazed) The sandwich was huge! A soft, but solid brioche bun supported 2 large pieces of chicken that was crispy on the outside and very juicy and tender on the inside. The pickled papaya added a nice zing to the sandwich and the combination as a whole was perfect! When I started on the sandwich, I thought I'd probably eat half, since it was so large, but it was THAT GOOD that I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN and finished the entire sandwich in one sitting! The brussel sprouts were so flavorful, that it left me wanting more. Pairing the sandwich and brussel sprouts with Singhai beer was an excellent choice! I will most definitely be back. My daughter is a fried chicken sandwich connoisseur. She is definitely picky when it comes to what she likes in this category and after just looking at it, she gave her stamp of approval. But we both had a bite and we knew this was a GOOD place. But I loved the crispy chicken thighs. Cooked just right. Boneless made them even better. The crispy texture of the batter was crunchy but the inside was juicy and full of flavor. The wings were better than I thought! They had this flavor even without the sauce that I couldn't quite identify but was so good. Worth every penny. I had attended a Yelp Elite event held at this restaurant. Fried chicken sandwich with Brussels Sprouts were offered to elite members. I had pre-ordered Thai fried chicken wings with garlic noodles in addition to a Thai fried chicken entree. Since only one sandwich was offered, I gave that to my guest who enjoyed it. She felt the bun was soft, the chicken was warm, crispy, crunchy and maintained its moisture. The coleslaw dressing with a secret ingredient of papaya added a special favoring. The Brussels sprouts were nice. The pre ordered meal Thai fried chicken wings were similar to the sandwich that it was crunchy crispy with a dipping sauce that complimented it well. The food here isn't super amazing but it's not bad either. The combo meals have hearty portions and for $16/$17 getting a side and drink along with your meal in this economy is a pretty good deal. Ordering is quick and easy through a little window and the vibe is very casual. I tried two types of chicken here: spicy thai wings and fried chicken sandwich, and felt their chicken lacked a depth in flavor. The srirachi aoili helped but the meat itself had minimal flavoring. There was a good amount of meat in the sandwich/ wings to fill you up. The side of garlic noodles could be tastier if they used thicker noodles instead of spaghetti. It would also be nice if they fridged the soda cans because they come room temp. Overall, they have a good menu and if they add more flavoring and elevate their ingredients it has the potential to be a foodie spot. read more

The picture looks better than what we received! They should describe the chicken as boneless thighs and legs. The garlic noodles are spicy. They need to describe it as spicy garlic noodles! The chicken is better as a sandwich! And the mochi is good but it's a small piece for the price! It's too expensive! read more

Got the Thai basil pork combo and the fried chicken thigh combo. The garlic noodle was dope! Very garlicky and not overly greasy. Good balance with the nicely fried thighs made a great meal. The Thai basil pork was lacking a bit of heat. Kinda wish it had a bit of spice to it. The rice was just okay, the brown rice didn't really pair well, would've preferred white rice. Still decent though (would've gotten the garlic noodles instead). read more

This small restaurant definitely looks like a whole in the wall from the outside, but it is so good. I tried this place for lunch with a few friends, and we were lucky to get a table. There aren't many tables inside, so I'd do take out if it's full. The food is made to order, so there was a little wait. If you're in a rush, just order ahead! The portions are very generous. We wanted to try a variety of things so we opted for the wings and things combo. The Asian flavors and spices were so good! It was too much food for the 3 of us but we enjoyed all the dishes. The chicken sandwiches sounded really good too, so we tried one. It was massive, super crispy, and not too greasy. For drinks we tried the Vietnamese coffee and taro milk tea. We liked that they weren't too sweet. I'd love to go back and try more items. read more

Best chicken sandwich! Small little shop in the corner near the hospital, street parking available. Few seatings available inside 5-7 tables. No bathroom available. Customer service was good. A bit of a waiting since they also do mobile to-go orders. Pricing was a little bit expensive, but they have a lot of meal seat options. Portion was big, chicken was fried and saucy, Curly fries, could have been more crisp. Sauce was a little bit spicy. All drink options were canned or bottled. Would definitely come back to try the other stuff on the menu like the garlic noodles and chicken wings. read more

I love this place! I came here after volunteering for the Berkeley Project and they prepared food for our 15+ volunteers. Their burger is delicious and unique, nothing like any of the burgers in Downtown Berkeley. Part of the meal was Brüssel sprouts and as someone that typically does not like the butter taste of Brussels sprouts, I was pleasantly surprised with how delicious they were! This was my first time enjoying Brüssel sprouts so I will never forget this restaurant. read more

I ran in for a quick bite today before shopping at Stone mountain & Daughters. I ordered the fried Brussels sprouts snack and it was hella good! Next time I would order it "light on the sauce" as I'm not a fan of sweet sauces but it was super filling for a snack item. Will be back to try more! read more

Have been wanting to try this place and it is not dissappointed. They take their time to prepare the food so order ahead if you don't want to wait . The restaurant is small with a few tables. I got the thigh combo with garlic noodles and it was delicious . The tom yum sauce comes with it was unique and makes the chicken even better . read more

I came to Southside Station for the first time for an event, where I got to try their fried tofu sandwich. It was amazing!! The tofu was perfectly crisp, and the papaya slaw in the sandwich cut through the tofu really well. I've come back again a few times--the fried chicken sandwich is so good too! You really can't go wrong with either sandwich. They also have fried and sautéed brussel sprouts, both are fantastic. I was never a brussel sprouts fan until I tried theirs, they flavor them and mask the bitterness really well. Would also highly recommend giving the brussel sprouts a try. The only dish that I wasn't a huge fan of was the garlic noodles because it just tasted like they cooked dry spaghetti and seasoned it with garlic. A bit underwhelming. The only reason why I took a star off is because the service is slow, which normally I would understand because this is a small business. But last time I ordered ahead online, they told me it would be ready in 30 minutes. I got there after 35 minutes to pick up, and the order wasn't ready yet so I had to wait 5-10 minutes more. I just didn't really feel like my time was being valued. Other than that, no real issues! The staff are always friendly and kind. Be sure to check it out!! read more

Best fried chicken sandwich I have ever had! The chickens was crunchy and tender inside, bun was buttery and soft , pickle and sauce was just so great. 10/10 I'm recommended. My friend got wings with garlics noodle she said she love it. The decoration is simple good for one person , friend and family or even big group since they have 2 big tables. read more
