We ordered their special fruity yummy drink. It was good, but 3 sips at $10 or $12 and it's gone? WTF! Really. Look at my photos. Tons of crushed ice. Waste of time and money. Prime Rib sammy was good, enough for 2. We got 2 sides, one came with. Collars were good but coukd be better. Ive had better locally and in Firt Lauderdake. Grits were creamy. Added Salt/Pepsi to taste. So overall it's ok. I think they get away with medoicre Southern because there's no challenger in town thats this vibe. So you pay for the dine in atmosphere etc, but the food 8s all middle of road. Now, i will admit Im a foodie from a harsh location, Ft Lauderdale, makes you tough because we eat everything from all cultures, so you gotta bring your A game, and we travel alot. You can do medoicre Mexican in an suburb where only Mexicans come to clean house, so going to get a taco or nachos os badic in some areas. But we travel to where Mexicans own it, eat it, and barely speak English. Thats authentic. So it's true here! Its a great place for Southern Comfort food, but we are always underwhelmed with their execution. On the first visit, crab cake stack. Average. Devil eggs were basic and disappointing. Unsure how you cant do well on a basic dish. Creamy. No kick flavor. It would be nice is the could level up their execution. The menu reads great, but we are consistently just like "OH, ok. Descent." So definitely visit. Expect average, just ok. If you arent Southern, this will be great for you, as you have no reference point. Don't go in like you are going to be transplanted to the South. Its average execution. Like creamy cheese grits but nothing extraordinary. I've had grits in North Carolina, Sunny Pointe, you might eat a finger scooping up the shrimps and grits. Definitely worth a visit. Its famiky friendly. I think you pay 20% for the atmosphere. Ckean, cute decor. Love the twigs etc, branches. The porch sitting feel. You saw parents and kids, you could tell it's back to school. Today, 8/15, they were low on waiters. So took a long time for anyone to check back on us. But you could see other unhappy tables, one guy yelling at Mgr, so maybe some slippage in this upstart.

The lady at the counter was super friendly when we came in! The prices here are pretty good for a meal consisting of a meat, rice, 2 sides, cornbread and a drink. If you're a student, there is a $2 discount off of lunch and dinner plates from noon to 5pm. There is a $1.50 charge for using a card, though. I got the Stewed Chicken dinner plate with Mashed Potatoes and Corn Casserole as my 2 sides. It's a bit of a wait for the food, but it looked like there were only two people running the whole operation by themselves. Everything comes out in a to-go box, but there is seating and TV entertainment available. The moment the stewed chicken entered my mouth I was in love with the flavor. It's a bit too salty but goes really well with the yellow rice, which was recommended to me by the lady at the counter. They didn't skimp on the stew broth either! I love when there's potato skin in my mashed potatoes but I wish they were a little creamier, and the corn casserole was really sweet which complimented the chicken stew really well. The only part of my meal that I wasn't a huge fan of was the cornbread, which was really dry. My friend Marley got Fried Chicken which took longer to come out, and when she ate her corn nuggets she said, "That's a good corn nugget." I tried one too and it was indeed a good corn nugget. I'll be back again for lunch!

Our visit was lackluster to say the least. Only a couple of tables active so it's difficult to judge efficiency. The limited brunch menu prices were pretty decent for these days, about $20/pp +tx, tip. Service could have been a little more attentive. We had fried chicken platters. The main course of chicken wasn't bad yet could be better. Cooked done but still juicy, which is a plus. Not battered but possibly a light flour dredge, with no seasonings so very light coating and somewhat lacking in flavor. We added a side of gravy which was delightful; a hearty beef debris sauce fit for a proper poutine, (which they don't serve). The collards, had a bitter to maybe even a fishy? taste. Not southern style at ALL. The Mac and cheese... needs a lot more cheese and butter, also that crusty cooked home style taste was missing. All in all a so-so meal with a lot more potential. The decor could use some livening up. The theme is a bit heavy for a good restaurant. It could use some lighter, colorful, lively adornments. We'll be back to try again. One of our members used to frequent Early's to retrieve food for the governor's mansion and raved about it. So, a little back to the future is needed.

When I read the email announcing tonight's Chef's dinner, we couldn't resist. No one, and I mean NO ONE, can fry an oyster better than Chef. Perched atop a great classic--deviled egg with bacon bits--the oyster was tender with a light batter-fried coating. Chef's duckfat cornbread drizzled with just the right amount of avocado butter provided the perfect podium on which two blackened shrimp lightly dusted with a hint of subtle spices rested. If you know me, you know I don't like my food to hurt me, and this dish met my requirements with a whisper of, "Here I am." Now, my hubby doesn't like anything with coffee, so he was worried about the hickory smoked chicken with espresso molasses BBQ sauce. However, he admitted the sauce didn't have any hint of coffee and, in fact, it was a delicious complement to the chicken. As for the pancetta Mac 'n' Cheese, its creamy cheesiness balanced out the smokiness of the chicken. Chef Joseph often offers one of his Pot de Crème varieties to finish a meal. I always look forward to them. Tonight's Pineapple White Chocolate version was a perfect finish to a perfect dining experience. Sparkling wines and summer--the perfect pairing. Even more perfect when you are enjoying them with a fabulous meal at Lucilla.
