Every year, on (or very soon after) the opening of Florida's stone crab season on October 15, I call my favorite fish monger, Southern Seafood, to reserve the biggest claws they can find for my annual "First Catch Feast." It's been a tradition in my home for over three decades. I think the crew at SS may actually recognize my voice; they certainly expect my call. This year, we had to postpone our annual full-on feast because of residual post-Hurricane craziness -- but I couldn't resist or deny myself tasting that uber-fresh, delectable, sweet claw meat. So we scaled back to a "First Catch Snack." The cost was a little crazy: $45/lb for colossals - but we HAD to spring for it. There is simply nothing better than fresh stone crab claws -- and I believe the bigger the better. And these monsters were amazing. (Plus, "first catch" just comes once a year. Splurge worthy.) As usual, I cracked and completely cleaned each claw, exposing pure meat and accompanied them with a mustard sauce (recipe from the iconic Joe's Stone Crab in Miami) and hash browns (traditional side). It's good to know I can always count on Southern Seafood to have the best, freshest seafood -- and, especially, the best stone crabs in the region from October 15 until the season ends on May 15.

Always a good selection. Always a couple bucks per pound higher than Mikes seafood. Never have mullet - for that reason, 3 stars.

I was DISAPPOINTED. Just DISAPPOINTED. The food was NOT good and definitely NOT New Orleans. The food was downright horrible. Despite the inside appearance, the tacky décor and signs plastered all over the place, I really wanted to like this place, and it breaks my heart to have to write this review. I ordered two dinners. The 10-piece catfish strips with fries and and the 6-piece shrimp with hushpuppies at a total cost of $16.66. It took about 15 - 20 minutes to get my order. Everything tasted like it was fried in cooking oil that was beyond its life and needed to be changed. The catfish strips were small, overcooked, dark in color, dry, and had the flavor of burnt oil / grease. The shrimps were small, overcooked, dry, and tasted like it was cooked in burnt oil / grease. The fries were soggy and just like the fish and shrimp had a burnt taste to them. The hushpuppies were the only thing that was eatable and had great flavor. I only ate 2 pieces of the horrible catfish strips, 3 small shrimps, and a couple of the hushpuppies because that's all my stomach could only tolerate. New Orleans Seafood was a total let down. This may be a locally owned and operated small business, but my goodness, have some standards when it comes to restaurant appearance and food quality.

He wanted to fry his--I do mine raw…read more I'm used to buying oysters in restaurants because the seafood market in Gainesville is pretty bad. Even so, the prices were positively stunning. I originally asked for 2 lbs. That's not how they sell 'em, the cashier explained patiently. I looked at the $12 "peck" and asked how many we could expect, thinking maybe 2 dozen. "3 to 5 dozen," the cashier nodded. Holy crap. I ultimately bought "2 dozen" for $8, which in the end was probably closer to 40 total oysters. They were fresh, salty sweet, and fabulous. Today we actually DID buy a full peck. Considering how often we pick up our oyster knives and dig in that bag, though, they might not make it home!

But trust me, Mike's seafood on capital circle is the best way to go. Because Spears seafood fish market do not know how to clean fish, they don't care they leave it nasty but Mike's seafood on capital circle is the best they clean it real good all you have to do is rinse it off when you get home season it fry and enjoy. Spears seafood market, you got to clean it scrape it, get the veins the guts and the blood out of it every time all the time, almost like you should have just bought it hold and clean it yourself. But at Mike's seafood on capital circle you don't have to do none of that take note Spears learn how to treat your customers instead of treating them like you think less of them because I have bought fish from you and I Stay a few blocks from you and I'll go 10 to 20 miles even to sopchoppy down by the water to get fish before I get it from Spears fishmarket again. learn how to treat your customers Spears seafood market with respect with the product that is better for them clean with healthy quality food. other than that they need to stop doing business with you like I have and just let you sit down and keep your dangerous contaminated seafood it will be harming my people
