I love southern cooking and Mexican food. So this seemed like a great solution. 1st- I had water & chicken quesadilla. It was fine. Nothing special. But very average. Had chips and salsa. Good flavor in salsa but very spicy hot! 2nd visit- I had water & the Pinto Beans & Cornbread at $6.95 on the menu. It came with cheese, onions and jalapeño peppers. Pretty good flavor. Not a southern type I'm used to. But for $6.95, it was fine. Big Problem: when I went to pay, I was charged $9.69. When I asked about this I was told there was an increase in price but the new menus had not come in. WHAT? That's not only deceptive but illegal! B-law 101. This tidy little cafe was a favorite lunch spot when I worked in Irving. In a recent week day I found myself nearby and went back. It did not disappoint! I had my usual fried catfish, which was perfectly prepared. The cabbage was excellent and the black-eyed peas were good, but the greens were too bitter for me. The chips and salsa were fresh and tasty. The service is friendly and attentive. I hope to get back to that part of town for another down home meal again soon! read more

The building's a bit hidden away but it looks like they get most of their business for lunch. It's nestled perfectly between a bunch of office buildings. We went for dinner. Southern Recipe is nestled in an unassuming strip mall in Irving. I've passed by it hundreds of times on my way to work, but never popped in. Recently my office moved very close to this location, so I decided to give them a try for lunch. Now my only regret is that I didn't go here sooner! I've been singing the praises of Southern Recipe to all of my coworkers, some of whom are already aware of how delicious their food is! Everyone there is quite friendly, you can tell they have a lot of regulars. They did lose a star because I had to wait a very long time for my check because the waitresses were chatting with other customers for long periods of time. It's great that y'all are friendly, but you have to balance that with service, especially for working folks that are there on their lunch break. The food was a full 5 stars! Best chicken sandwich in Irving, in my opinion. The grilled chicken was tender and juicy, the bacon was crisp, the bun had outstanding flavor and texture, and the onion rings were the crunchiest I've ever had (also reheated wonderfully in a toaster oven). The portion was beyond generous, I took half home with me for later. I also love that they bring you out warm chips and salsa, and the salsa is very authentic, not the slightly spiced ketchup you get some places, lol. If you want great, home cooked food without all the hassle, this is the place! I live near Houston and when I make a trip to see family in Irving, this is a must go to restaurant. We were there over Memorial Day weekend and as always, the food, service and cleanliness were above par. Our waiter Jose, didn't miss a beat and kept us taken care of quickly. And that was a chore considering there was 7 of us with 3 kids under 7! Food was all made the way we ordered it and came out hot! It was over 10 of us there and our server was twirling honey! She made sure we didn't have to ask for refills, had are orders right, and was so sweet! Ok, this spot seems like a hole-in-the-wall kind of find. Looking for something different I hit up Yelp and spotted Southern Recipe with good reviews and decided to give them a try for breakfast. At first, when I pulled up, I was questioning my decision. The restaurant is in a strip mall kind of location and looked pretty non-descript. Pressing on we went in and were seated in a diner style booth where our young server, a culinary school student, gave us our menu and got us started. We stuck with basic Texas breakfast fare, chicken fried steak and eggs, and it was very good. Much better than I was expecting. One of the simplest things a restaurant can do is serve their food hot, and SR did just that. Service was quick and attentive and that added to the overall experience. Quick tips: This place has great food for a great value. A kind of secret in a Las Colinas rough. The Breakfast Tacos are delish! Free warm salsa and chips AND bread and cornbread. Really friendly owner. Food: We came here for my brother's birthday, my parents swear by it and we weren't sure what to expect. Don't fill up on the cornbread and rolls though - easier to do with the slightly sweet rolls than the grainy cornbread. Also, the warm salsa and thin chips are also complimentary! I would recommend the breakfast tacos above anything, the hashbrowns were average, needed an extra amount of salt. Add an extra stack of pancakes for a sweet side. What a mistake. We should have known upon walking into an EMPTY breakfast joint on a Saturday late morning that we were in trouble. First, it's dim inside and it smells BAD. We had seen some decent reviews on here and hoped they'd wow us with the food. They didn't. I saw something weird on the menu - a "pancake sandwich" - I thought that sounded dumb/fun to try so I ordered it. I got 2 pancakes on one plate, eggs and bacon on another. I guess it's some kinda self-assemble sandwich? The bacon was undercooked, which drives me nuts, and the eggs were just passable. The pancakes were worse that what I can make myself. I think these were bisquick or something. They make a breakfast sandwich - it was also passable as food. Their biscuits and sausage gravy surprised me in that it was the worst I'd ever had, and I'd recently had some really bad ones at Waffle House. These biscuits tasted like they were made from a can and were a week old. Super dry and flavorless. The gravy was just white gravy with hardly any sausage in it. It was gross. I took my seat by the window in the restaurant that seemed to emulate the decor at Saltgrass--pretty Texanish. The waiter came by and promptly brought me a water and a bowl of bread and cornbread. I asked the waiter which of the daily specials he recommended, but he told me he hadn't tried either (which saddened me) and he told me the chop steak was more popular that day. I ordered that with their Southern Green Beans, Black Eyed Peas, and Macaroni & Cheese. Nothing was particularly fantastic. The sides were bland, but I did enjoy the chop steak. At one point I thought I was eating hamburger meat, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. It was good beef. One thing I noticed is that every other table was getting a sizzling plate of fajitas. That might be something worth checking out. They also serve breakfast items all day, along with a vast array of mexican. There are good cheap places to eat in Las Colinas. You just have to look. Most entrees range from seven to eight bucks and come with the works. You would never know it from its name, but in addition to made from scratch country cooking, the other half of the menu is Mexican Food. You can either get good 'ol country cookin with rolls and bread, or Mexican with chips and salsa. Sometimes, I get chips and salsa even though I get a country dish. I used to work next door, so this was popular for lunch. I get the lunch fajitias that are the same exact portion for dinner, and it's $8.95! For dinner, the prices aren't that much more. Their country dishes and sides are all well seasoned and hearty. The design could be freshened, and this isn't a place you would take customers, a date, or friends from out of town to impress them, but if you want a decent sized portion at a fair price, this is definitely your place! read more

We used to be regulars but quit for several reasons, one of which is that it always smells bad. We tried again today because the food is always good, but to be honest it's because they cook with lard and bacon grease. Today we tried again. We were the only people there. CNN was on the TV. Then another couple walked in, asked to have the TV changed to Fox, which was promptly done without asking us. We asked to have it turned down and she did turn it down, but they should come up with a policy. You never know if it will be cartoons, violent movies, loud, Fox News, a shopping network. It's annoying. Then a mouse ran across the room. It apparently came from under my booth bench and ran across the dining room and disappeared behind the cashier's booth. When we told the waitress she did not seem surprised. Now I wonder if mice are the reason the restaurant always smells bad. There is always a mildew and rubbish smell in there. Went here for lunch for the first time today. I was shocked to see the most of the menu was Mexican food with a name like southern recipe and touting that they had down home country food. I got the chicken fried steak with three vegetables and cornbread. The chicken fried steak was good and the vegetables were better. The cornbread was excellent. The main reason I gave him a three was most of the food was just average not bad but not excellent. Also, the service was not very attentive or friendly. Wednesday lunch took me to a little known home-style restaurant on West Walnut Hill. If you are not looking for it, you will miss it. The restaurant is nestled in a small shopping plaza next door to an Italian place. But believe me, you will experience a heavy dose of FOMO if you don't check out "Southern Recipe". This restaurant will satisfy that country/Tex-Mex hankering that you've had but been unable to take care of at other places in the area. First off, let me define "home-style" for you. A few yelp reviewers have called the food bland and unimpressive. Home-Style food is defined as simple, unpretentious and evoking the comforts of home. Home-style is essentially "Mom's food", the meat and potatoes of the culinary world. This place offers "Mom's food" and serves up southern country (chicken fried steak, meatloaf etc) and Tex-Mex (enchiladas, fajitas, carne asida and other mexican dishes). In Texas, especially West Texas, it is not unusual AT ALL to have a place that serves both Tex-Mex and country food. Now that we've established what home-style food is, let's discuss what it is not. Home-style food is not fancy tapas portions nor has steakhouse prices. It won't have over-the-top flavor, and it will not be exotic. Americanized mexican food is meant to be more bland than traditional Mexican food; that is why it is called Tex-Mex. Tex-Mex is from the Tejanos culture in Texas. Anyway, for some of us, Tex-Mex food is "down home" or country food, especially if you're a West Texan like myself. Okay, now let's talk about my meal. I ordered chicken fried steak (huge, wonderful portion) and I also got mashed potatoes with gravy, mac and cheese and okra. It was exactly what I was looking for. Gravy-smothered crispy, yummy chicken fry (that's what I call it). The mashed taters were creamy and hot, okra was crispy, and the mac and cheese took care of my craving. I also got complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa rated in the top four best of salsas, in my book, that I ever have had. Yes, it was warm which is common in Tex-Mex, but it was fresh. I ended my meal with sopapillas, and they had just the right amount of cinnamon and sugar. Again, it was what I wanted and asked for. It made me happy! Service was quick, and I was seated quickly after arriving at 11:30am. They were short-staffed so we were attended to but not overly so like what you might find at another restaurant. Someone mentioned the ambiance of the restaurant, saying it needs to be updated. Just like your best friend's memaw and pawpaw, who live out in the country, they don't fix something unless its broken. Do you replace a piece of furniture or your vehicle when it gets a little tear in the cushion? No. I believe this adds to the homey or home-style appeal of this place. In addition to their Tex-Mex and country food, it has an amazing breakfast selection. I plan to come back for breakfast or a Sunday brunch. I always get the blackened chicken w/ rice and okra and a salad from them and it's delicious. This location however does not make it the same at all.
