Fantastic happy hour! There is a Whiskey Cake in Jacksonville so visiting one and another city wasn't top of my list however on Cinco de Mayo when the Mexican restaurant next-door is over a two hour wait I figured I'd stop in to Whiskey Cake for a margarita. I am so glad I stopped in the happy hour was happening and so I was able to grab a seat at the bar and get a margarita for $7!!! Well if I'm being honest, technically I got two margaritas for that price! The service was wonderful. I came about 15 minutes before happy hour was over and the server came around and double checked on everyone in her section prior to happy hour being over and let them know it was coming close to being over so we could put our last orders in! Went there this morning for Mother's Day Brunch. We had a 9:00 reservation and we were seated immediately. The Ambiance was great - really hip and cool. Lots of space. The food was great - I had excellent Fish & Chips, my wife had the Black Forest French Toast (like a dessert!) and the kids had Chicken Waffles. And my Cold Fashion was to die for! We drew the short straw and didn't get the best waitress. We had to ask for water and didn't get the extras that came with the meal (no malt vinegar for F&C, not hot honey for waffles) but that was an anomaly as I watched the other wait staff being quite attenative to their tables and them getting all the fixin's. If I'm being completely honest, I would go hear and get a piece of Whiskey Cake EVERYDAY if I wasn't worried about my sugar intake. The restaurant is named after it for a reason. This visit we didn't get any entrees or drinks we were there for the cake. We don't have one in our state so we were ECSTATIC to find out there were a few in the metroplex area. We did go 2 out of our 4 days there. Just get the cake, ask for a middle piece. Everything is locally sourced and the whipped cream is made fresh and you can tell. Every bite is heaven. This place is very nice with a high-end but very relaxed atmosphere. I had a crispy chicken sandwich (sub honey mustard), which may have been the best chicken sandwich I've ever had. Met up with some friends here for dinner and it was popping! I've never seen a place so busy on a Tuesday. Great atmosphere. We checked in with the hostess and were warmly greeted and seated right away. They have happy hour from 3-6pm with specials on drinks and bar bites, so right away we put in an order for a couple of drinks and the tater tots. We also got the Brussels sprouts. For my main, I ordered the steak frites and subbed the fries for the Cajun butter potatoes. I also got the happy hour old fashioned and an espresso martini. Well they redid their whole menu anddd the choices are even more limited for a pescatarian... Seeing as how I only eat seafood I ordered items off the app menu and a battered fish filet. I have been a loyal client of Whiskey Cake for years. Yes, there have been frustrations like when the abandoned most of the craft beers and settled for the same draft choices as TGI Fridays, but I have remained loyal to the staff and the farm to table food experience. I will say, the visit yesterday left me flabbergasted. I selected a Bourbon from their Wednesday Pour choices and it was delivered in a standard Whiskey sipper glass. I mentioned to the bartender, I wanted it on a rock, which is how I have ordered for years. To my surprise, she replied, "There is a $2.00 upcharge if you want a rock." I was shocked as my "WHAT" reply probably showed. I asked again and she repeated, there is a $2.00 charge for a rock, but you can get regular ice cubes free. I said I would just drink it neat, but did request a manager come by to discuss. The manager did come by and tried to justify the charge. My defense was you are a Whiskey establishment, and a rock is a standard. He insisted other places are just including the price in the drink, and suggested maybe they should just do that moving forward. Now I'm thinking, you're wanting to charge for a branded piece of ice, or you're over charging me if I drink it neat. Definitely frustrating, and even my friend commented, "This is the kind of thing that keeps people from coming back to a place." I'm sure I will return but I do think Whiskey Cake management should think through decisions like this, and how it feels to their loyal clients. I have been to hundreds of Whiskey establishments all across the country and expect to be asked how I want my Bourbon served. A rock is a standard. Never have I been charged for a piece of ice. I didn't write a review for Whiskey Cake, yet? Can't be! But alas, here I am in 2025 attempting to summarize the last 6-ish years of dining here. Brunch, lunch, dinner and everything in between. I've been here for all of it and I'm never disappointed. WC is always on my list for visitors and I'm always happy to make the trek. A great concept for the area. Reservations or as a walk-in. No problems. Luckily, my family was able to stop in for their special July 4th brunch. Tell me why, we almost missed fireworks to make another trip?! Seating is ample, the waitstaff and bar staff are superb, the bathrooms are always clean. Parking is never an issue and I can't remember eating something I didn't like. In fact, I've ordered their special holiday meals for pre-post holiday eating and they've been a part of my freeze prep for two years in a row. Been to Whiskey cake a few times now, and have visited both the Irving and Plano locations. They both are good, but I prefer the Irving one mostly because of the layout, it feels bigger to me than the Plano one did. Food wise, I ordered the rigatoni pasta last time I went and it was delicious! It was creamy, flavorful, just what you'd want in a pasta dish. However I went last night and turns out they flipped the menu and it's no longer on there, maybe it was just a summer menu item. Anyways that's okay, I tried the Chicken Melt last night and that was divine! It was messy but the flavor was on point. We also had to get the whiskey cake of course! It doesn't actually taste like whiskey or anything, but it was moist, and hit the sweet spot literally. It's a good size so just one will be shareable for a couple of people. The cake itself is too sweet for me after a couple bites so I prefer to share. Additionally, me and my friend both got the old fashioned flights, which were really good, and gave us a chance to taste a few different types of OF that they make here. I like the farm to table concept at this restaurant so I stopped and ate dinner here with a few buddies prior to a concert at Toyota Music Factory. I ordered the Ruben and it came on local marbled rye bread- always nice to have homemade bread not full of preservatives and other garbage for your body. Bread was thick and flavorful and the sandwich was topped with pastrami, cheese, sauerkraut and Russian dressing just like a proper Ruben should be. The sauerkraut dressing mix was decent and cheese was melted as I would expect on a Ruben. Pastrami had great flavor, my only mild complaint is that I like my sandwich liked a little higher than what I got there, but that's just me being picky. The sandwich was served with hand cut fries- they were great! I washed it down with a couple of glasses of Pinot and then was ready to go to the concert. What a day to go to Whiskey Cake. With all the storms, I got there at 11 when they opened and I was the only person. Highly recommend going on a rainy day! Jacob, our server, was great. I'd been here twice before and had a great time, but this was my first small scale outing to WC where apps weren't ordered for me, so Jacob was really helpful with suggestions. We started with the deviled eggs, because I happened to show up both previous times during the bacon topped deviled eggs. They are DELICIOUS, but I was really hoping to try different ones and I was not disappointed. The caramelized onion deviled eggs were ridiculous. My boss had never had them at Whiskey Cake, and she was stunned. You think, but they're just deviled eggs, who cares, deviled eggs aren't special. EH, wrong! They are that special. They come 5 to a plate (don't ask me why not 6, I question that myself), and they're not large eggs, but they are ridiculously good and the filing is plentiful. If I'm honest, the two of us didn't even finish three 5, but for a table of 4, seems like there should be a larger option. Jacob had suggested the turkey chili, so I got that with the grilled chopped chicken salad with no blue cheese. My boss got the salad and sandwich with the chicken sandwich and the grilled chopped chicken salad. That salad is just really good. The grilled char taste on the chicken is great, they have a texture like maybe they're boiled first and then grilled, I'm fine with that. The chicken is so moist, you can see it in my photos. My boss wasn't sure about the basil garlic dressing, so Jacob surprised her with several choices, she loved that. Spoiler alert, that basil garlic dressing is so good, you could eat it on cardboard. The turkey chili has beans in it, which I didn't love. I don't understand beans in chili in a restaurant. I know it's because beans are cheaper than meat, but still, I'd rather have extra turkey than a spoonful of beans and no turkey. That said, the soup flavor was good and spicy, so Jacob got that suggestion right on the money. Of course, the place is called Whiskey Cake, so... you have to. Or rather, I got a piece and a side of ice cream to go for my boyfriend. lol That was his one request, since this was just me and my boss today. I have a feeling we'll be back soon! This place won't do you wrong... Dallas is full of chains and concepts, and this is another one but one of the better ones that you will come to. It's got a big fun bar inside as well as a lot of indoor seating and some nice covered patio seating outside for that nice weather that occasionally comes to Dallas in the spring and fall. The brussels sprouts as an appetizer was pretty good, and it was not Overlee done. The chicken was nicely roasted with great roasted vegetables to go along with it and I would definitely order that again. I think they could do better in terms of their nonalcoholic, beer options.
