We found the Elf in the Oak on Yelp and once we saw the menu, we knew we had to give it a try. The Elf in the Oak is nestled on Rt 414. If you're not actively using a GPS, you may pass it by. It's not a large place by any means, but there's more than enough seating indoors and out. We went on a Friday morning, so there wasn't a wait and we received our food quickly. We both wanted 'the Spicy' and I have to admit, it's one of the best egg sandwiches I've ever had, which is high praise coming from someone who once worked at a popular bagel joint on Long Island. If we lived locally, we'd definitely go back, but I hope if you're looking for a quick casual brunch place to grab a bite, you consider visiting the Elf In The Oak.

The schnitzel sandwich was also very good. The fries, at $8 as a side were not worth it, I would have rather ordered another sandwich than got two sides of fries. The chips were also almost flavorless, except that of 99% fresh oil. The kids grilled cheese was American cheese, and thus, imho, was not very good. One of my kids took a bite and didn't like it either. Ambiance: simple, nice view of the lake. Service: friendly staff. Tl;DR: I'll be back, but won't order sides or the grilled cheese.

Lil' miss frumpy sub maker lady did not wake up on the right side of the bed today. When I asked if I would receive a text when my to-go order was ready, the response was "where do you think you are New York City?" in a tone that was more hostile than all the burroughs combined. But I knew exactly where I was and my tone and question did not deserve a response like this. Frumpy sub maker lady continued to dish out her rudeness saying that we were wasting her time for asking questions and sarcastically gave back the tip we had given. My tone never shifted from start to finish, even after calling out the poor service. I do not like to call out establishments, especially local businesses, but holy shit she was rude. Probably the rudest food service experience I've ever had. Best sub rolls in upstate ny though...that will always be true. It is always a choice to be an asshole. If frumpy sub maker lady reads this -- it is ALWAYS a choice. Choose kindness, my dear :) Just because your day is ruined by having to make a few subs, it doesn't mean you have to try to ruin someone else's day.

Their menu has what you'd expect from a classic diner, prices are cheap, and service is quick! We got the Country Style Eggs and Patty Melt. Both lacked basic seasonings like salt & pepper. If I was rating off the food alone, I'd give it a 3/5. The home fries in the Country Style Eggs could've been crispier and adding hot sauce definitely saved this a bit. The biscuit we got with it was homemade and so delicious. It was warm, buttery, and satisfying. The Patty Melt was a bit dry and desperately needed a sauce. I used ketchup and asked for pickles which helped. The rye bread was surprisingly not dry and grilled nicely with butter. It was definitely a heavy meal but we needed it after a long drive. It's not the kind of place where you'll have an amazing meal but it'll do the job at a super affordable price.
