I live in California now and am in San Antonio for work. Our barbecue sucks in california. It's horrible. I'm going to pay $100 at my favorite spot in California for what I paid $35 for here, and it won't even be as good. I was going to go to Pinkerton's, but the line was all the way to the sidewalk and I didn't want to wait. I Googled bbq and I found South Barbecue had good reviews so I decided to give it a shot. The brisket was excellent. I loved the rub used. The pulled pork was nice and moist. I always love it when they pour the juices back into the pulled pork so it's not dry. The jalapeno cheddar sausage link was also really good. The barbecue sauce tasted like it was homemade and I wish I could take it home. A little on the sweet side for me. I like bbq sauce a little bit more spicy, but it was still really good. read more

South barbecue is one of the few downtown places that I don't mind going because it actually has parking. You do have to walk around to the front to get inside, but that's OK. You can help you walk off all that meat. I went with my companion and he got the replay and I got the brisket plate and we kind of just share back-and-forth the meat so that we both had both. Honestly I loved his ribs more than I loved my brisket, but the brisket was equally moist and tender. No complaint with the meat no complaint with the seasoning. We got the chips and queso for $8. It seemed pricey, but the chips were homemade and as long as they continue to be homemade, I would buy it again. It was really a star appetizer. Now for the not so good. The sides were awful. They were really terrible actually the best of all the sides was the pickles and the and the onions that they had. They asked me if I wanted it and I said yes, I would try it and so be careful you answer that question because that was the best side. I didn't like their corn at all. It wasn't creamy. That's probably how Hispanics like it. I liked the vinegar coleslaw that I got, but mainly because the vegetables refresh and crunchy. The coleslaw was a little too mustardy, but I think that was deliberate. The potatoes were really huge and that was off putting. The inside was very clean the booths were roomie. The bathrooms were clean. The music was rather loud and random. Overall, I would probably return this time I would probably get just a half a pound of meat (per person) of different kinds and then share them with the table. It was a marginal experience. The sides we received were very tasty (rice and borracho beans). I loved the bread and pickled items as well as the jalepeno link. I know my brisket very well as I have lived all over the state. They do not cut to order as I asked for moist slices (fat on), and the young lady told me they could not guarantee that. Sure enough, I got a half pound of dry meat that I could have purchased at Bill Miller's. I noticed there were those around me enjoying better cuts. Decent bbq spot. It's in a good location with good curb appeal, however with the pizza spot on the back, the parking lot fills up fast. We went at 5:30/6pm on a Friday night, and there were only two other families eating inside. Very quiet, and nice patio we had to ourselves. The staff were really friendly and helpful. Prices are average, but the bbq isn't anything to rave about. It was VERY peppery, so personally not my thing. I'd say the ribs are a 7/10, pork was really wet and fatty I'd give that a 3/10, and brisket was tender and fell apart so that was an 8/10. The mustard potato salad was the best side, same with the beans. The slaw was soaking wet too! It's vinegar based so I kind of understand but it was legit just slaw mix and vinegar. The whole experience was underwhelming and nothing was really in your face amazing. If you want to scratch your bbq itch, this might suffice though. read more

It had been described as a patio place, so we thought it was only outside seating. Wrong. There is tons of indoor seating as well. Booths, tables and high stool seating. The place is very clean. The staff picks up after you leave. It's down pretty quick. We weren't sure about parking, so we parked on the street. I did ask a staff person later and she said you can park in the lot behind them. It's shared with the pizza place that's located behind them. You order at the counter and then it's brought to you. We had the turkey breast plate with rice, beans and tortillas. Also a brisket plate with potato salad and Cole slaw with potato bread. While the brisket was very tender, the husband felt it had too much fat. He wasn't happy with the potato salad and slaw. 'the slaw is too much like Bill Millers' and he's not a fan of mustard. I was very happy with my turkey and sides. The turkey is peppered. The charro beans and rice have great flavor. The flour tortillas were a bit different. Very thin, yet when cooled, were still reasonably soft. You can get soft drink refills. No condiment counter for onions and pickles. This place is located on Main Street in a small village of other businesses. These businesses all share the same small parking area which is in back which made it difficult to find parking. This place is exactly what you'd expect from a barbecue place....wooden booths, wooden bar area and the distinct smell of smoked meats and burning wood. Menu options are typical but be sure to confirm what you're ordering as it can be slightly confusing on the plate orders. I ordered brisket, ribs, barracho beans and potato salad. I cannot describe how amazing the food was! The meats were smoked perfectly! And I loved the pickled cucumbers and onions!!!! I was running errands and hadn't eaten all day, so I found this spot only 5 minutes from where I was and had to try their barbecue. I believe they had another location previously, but I had not gone to that location either. I got the barbecue plate which comes with a 1/2lb meat, two choices of sides, and either tortillas or potato bread. I dined in, and they also gave a little side of bbq sauce and pickled onions & pickles. The brisket was good but not amazing, but I think it's partly due to the slower turnover rate on a Monday afternoon. I'll have to come back on the weekend to try their barbecue again. Four stars for now for the quality of the meat. I liked that there was indoor and outdoor seating--the weather was so nice, and I was able to enjoy my meal in the fresh air. The brisket was a perfect combination of lean with a little fat for marbling and the pork ribs were meaty and had a nice rub on them. The brisket I ordered was ALL FAT! It was completely inedible. I used to love the South before the new location. I couldn't wait to try the new place but was very disappointed. I thought it was a fluke or off day for them so my husband took the entire tray back to the counter and showed them this tray of fat that was supposed to be brisket. I first saw this on a Texas Eats segment and wanted to try since the location is very near our church. I had the beef brisket with corn elothes and mustard potato salad. My husband had the turkey plate with coleslaw and beans. We both really enjoyed our meal. Another couple we had our meal both enjoyed their meal as well. The top highlights for me were the pork ribs and the jalapeño sausage! One note that really made the visit worth it was when ordering, I requested fatty slices for my plate. When receiving our order, we were given slices of lean to which I asked if it was possible to switch it out. The GM returned this time with two slices of fatty and explained that they made the mistake of allowing to preference what slices you would like, but made it right, which shows the integrity and consistency to provide the great customer service aspect well needed in the bbq world! I would make an effort to stop at South back when it was in the Mission District. Was happy to see that the new brick and mortar location had opened. It's a nice site and, for many reasons, having sufficient inside seating is a good thing. The brisket is as good as any you'll get in Texas. Some might find it a bit on the salty side, but that's to my liking. Conversely, while the pulled pork was tender and carried a little smoke flavor, it was a little on the bland side. I wish more Texas pitmasters would make a little vinegar/seasoning post-pull solution to mix in a little to enhance the flavor. Pork ribs were tender and tasty and both regular and cheddar/jalapeno sausages were moist and snappy - the latter carrying a nice jalapeno punch. Mustard potato salad was above par, though one might think it was a little heavy on the mustard and some of the potatoes were slightly undercooked.
